Since we're in the holiday season, and we're in the middle of our 1980s season, it seemed like the perfect time to re-release the SpielbergPod episode Becky and I recorded on Joe Dante's horror comedy classic, 'Gremlins'. And this episode was recorded all the way back in 2015 (it was the first podcast I recorded over the internet, since Becky lived in Canada at the time of record). One thing I would note, having listened back to this yesterday, when it comes to the recast section it may sound like we're misgendering / deadnaming Suzy Izzard, but, again, that is down to this being recorded back in 2015, prior to us having knowledge of Izzard's gender identity.
Okay, this week I once again return to the SpielbergPod archives and to three episodes recorded back in 2015/2016. And these cover 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' (which I covered with Jake), 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' (which I discussed with Paul) and 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (which Kieran and I talked about). So obviously, these were recorded many, many years ago (before 'Dial of Destiny' was even a glint in James Mangold's eye) but there's still some absolute gold here. And some impressions which, while were genuinely done out of love for these films and these characters, haven't aged well. Soz.
This week it's mediations on love and loss with this 2022 conversation from the SpielbergPod archives. It's a One Perfect Scene episode, with Paul and I discussing the (super emotional) final scene of Steven Spielberg's 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial'.
Okay, little backstory to this epsiode. On the sister podcast- the SpielbergPod (and the Patreon feed over at www.patreon.com/ERRP)- occassionally we do 'One Perfect Scene' epiosdes, where we discuss perfect scenes from films. Anyway, today's episode of ERRP is one of these, so it's me and Paul just* talking about one scene from James Cameron's 'Aliens' (*obvioulsly we talk a bunch about the the Alien franchise in general from the '79 original to Romulus, which comes out soon). And the specific scene we are talking about sees characters discuss the facehugger eggs (foreshadowing the queen) and Riply confronts Burke. Oh, and to compiicate things further, the scene is slightly different in the Director's Cut version of the film to the theatrical one, so we touch on both iterations of the scene.
The second film in a row where Spielberg adapts a piece of literature, this time an autobiography about grief and trauma in WW2. We are introduced to a very young Christian Bale in this film told from the Pacific Theater in the war. FEATURING: Craig McFarland and Brandon Davis We hope to get connected with you soon! Great Scott! In this episode of the podcast- fittingly- we travel back in time to 2015 and 2016 for two conversations originally recorded for my original podcast, the SpielbergPod. These two conversations are on 'Back to the Future' (with my good friend Jake) and 'Back to the Future Part II' (with my equally excellent pal Paul). And the three of us have a lot of love for these brilliant movies.
This week's episode was recorded a long time ago (2015) in a galaxy far, far away (Wood Green, North London). What we have here is two Star Wars conversations- with Paul and I discussing 'The Empire Strikes Back' and me and Jev talking about 'Return of the Jedi'- originally released on my OG podcast, the SpielbergPod. And listening back to these, 2015 was an interesting time to be a Star Wars fan as we are all eagerly awaited the release of 'The Force Awakens' and the start of the sequel trilogy (oh, what a journey we were about to begin...).
Spielberg flexes his serious muscle as we begin to move into a stretch of films that take him out of his comfort zone in the 1980s. The Color Purple is as relevant today as it was when Spielberg directed the original film. Now that the musical version of the story just hit theaters, we reflect on this film and talk about how it fits into the overall canon. We explore the second installment of the Spielberg directed Indiana Jones franchise. This one acts more as a prequel to Raiders, and sees Indy in a much darker light. Craig and Brandon discuss revisiting this film and how they feel about this Indiana Jones chapter. FEATURING: Craig McFarland and Brandon Davis We hope to get connected with you soon! This episode is another return to the archives from my original podcast, the SpielbergPod, with discussion on Steven Spielberg's short film Amblin' from 1968 (which you can watch for free on YouTube, if you're interested). Just to note, this episode was recorded back in March or April 2020 and it was the first podcast we recorded remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The journey through Stephen Spielberg's films have brought us to another classic. Brandon and Craig talk all about E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Through the conversation the two talk about the film's impact over the past forty years, touch on the wonderful score and explore their own connections with the story. BuddaBumBumBaddaBummmmBaddaBumBumBaddabumbumbum! It is time to talk one of the most iconic characters brought to the screen by Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones. Come along with us while we dive into his six film. One that is filled with adventure, great character development and archeology. This week it's another return to the archives from my original podcast, the SpielbergPod, with an episode recorded back in Spring 2021 when we were still deeply in lockdown. It sees Kieran, Paul and I discuss the Columbo episode 'Murder by the Book', which was both the first episode of that long-running show and an episode directed by Steven Spielberg. Things to note since this episode was recorded, Angela Lansbury has since sadly passed (we talk about her being still alive in the recording) and also Kieran states Natasha Lyonne would make a perfect Columbo- and recently she has been cast in a Columbo-esque role in Rian Johnson's show Poker Face (which Kieran told me recently is very good).
Whew.... There is little we have to say about this one. Give it a listen. FEATURING: Craig McFarland and Brandon Davis We hope to get connected with you soon! Continuing the Sherlock talk from last week's episode, this time around I have delved into the archives of my original podcast- the SpielbergPod- to the 2015 conversation between myself and Jev on the Barry Levinson film, 'Young Sherlock Holmes' (it was Spielberg produced, that was why we we discussing it then).
After making a big splash with Jaws, Steven Spielberg set his sights upward. Close Encounters had been praised as one of the most significant science fiction films of all times. Brandon and Craig give it a rewatch and start to work through some of the themes that tie all four of Spielberg's films together to this point. There is something in the water! It's hard to believe that Steven Spielberg's third film would be one with such lasting impact. What can we say about Jaws? It creates the idea of a summer blockbuster, and still to this day terrifies us all when we get in the water. We also spend some time in this episode to discuss the state of the movies in general as we are right in the heart of summer film season 2023. Steven Spielberg's second film brings us on a wild chase across Texas. Based on a true story, Sugarland Express makes us all think about our perceptions of those on the run. Wonderful performances from all our main cast of characters makes this a fun watch. FEATURING: Craig McFarland and Brandon Davis We hope to get connected with you soon! We start our journey with Steven Spielberg on his first film. Originally produced as a TV movie, Duel was later released into movie theaters. This film plays almost like a Twilight Zone episode, and we are excited to dive into it with you! FEATURING: Craig McFarland and Brandon Davis We hope to get connected with you soon! In this episode- recorded somewhen in the summer of 2022- Jev and I discussed 'The Money Pit', the 1986 comedy from Richard Benjamin starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long. Our opinions on the film differ somewhat (I'm more generous on it than Jev) and then we completely disagree on 'The 'Burbs' (Jev likes it, I don't). NOTE- This episode is an extended version of an episode released on the sister podcast, The SpielbergPod in 2022, which did not contain the special features for the film. A reminder, if you want to support the show please go to www.patreon.com/ERRP where you can get access to episodes which won't be accessible on iTunes for at least one year.
This week I have delved into the archives of my original podcast= the SpielbergPod- with two discussions from 2015 on Don Bluth films. The first was a solo chat on 'An American Tail' (I believe this was my very first attempt at a solo recording) and the second- recorded on New Year's Eve that year- sees Kieran and I discuss 'The Land Before Time'. Two hugely moving animated classics.
This week I went to the theatre to see 'Back to the Future the Musical' and decided to record an episode of the SpielbergPod to gather my thoughts on the show (Please note- I make it clear when I'm getting into 'spoiler territory', in case you are thinking of going to see the show).
In this episode Jev returns to the SpielbergPod for the first time since our Die Hard coverage back in 2016, as we discuss Jon Favreau's 'Iron Man 2', as part of our festive Marvel coverage.
Returning to Middle Earth after our epic coverage of the Jackson trilogy on my sister podcast, the SpielbergPod (still available), Paul, Kieran and I discuss Ralph Bakshi's 'The Lord of the Rings', which is an animated take on 'The Fellowship of The Ring' and 'The Two Towers'. Expect comparisons to Tolkien's books as well as to the Peter Jackson films. Also, top bants!
This week it's another return to the archives from my original podcast, the SpielbergPod, with a discussion on his WW2 comedy '1941'.
Another return visit to our sister-podcast the SpielbergPod with a discussion from 2015 on Steven Spielberg's epic film, 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'. And if you wonder why we don't mention the film 'Arrival' (which would've made a dynamite Companion Piece) it wasn't out at the point of Kieran and I recording this episode. Bloody good film though.
Smile you son of a bitch.... because this week we're talking about the Spielberg classic, 'Jaws'. Reissuing an episode from our sister show, the SpielbergPod, from a 2015 conversation about the Amity set classic, Paul and I talk about splitting the film into two parts, the notion of a shark terrorising the Isle of Wight, 'Jurassic Park' comparisons, the TV show 'The Affair', the idea of making Brody gay and much, much more. And to make this a bigger boat we've accompanied this old recording with some new recordings, as me and several of my co-hosts do some 2018 masterclass sessions, doing several dramatic readings of scenes from Jaws. Set sail for a good time people!
In this episode, recorded for the SpielbergPod back in 2015, Paul, Kieran and I discuss the Ridley Scott film 'Alien'. Expect talk of 'Prometheus', of 'meeting; David Walliams, of the career of Ridley Scott and much much more.
Since Solo is now in cinemas everywhere, this felt like a perfect time for an episode on George Lucas' 1977 film 'Star Wars'. This episode originally aired on my sister show the SpielbergPod but- in true Lucas style- has been remastered and contains exclusive bonus content (which includes a brief cameo from our friends at JoJCast).
In this episode Kieran and I talk Spielberg once again with a discussion on his film 'The Sugarland Express'. This episode is a rerelease of a 2015 episode of the SpielbergPod which ends with a 2017 episode of the SpielbergPod where we have a very fun conversation on the idea of an anthology TV show based around the films of Steven Spielberg.
Breaking into the SpielbergPod archives, Kieran and I discuss Steve Spielberg's debut film (yeah, I said it) 'Duel'. We also talk about Tom Cruise running, putting ketchup on a cheese sandwich and John Carpenter's adaptation of Stephen King's 'Christine'. (A rerelease of the debut episode of the SpielbergPod from 2015. But with exclusive extra bits).
This week I’m joined by another guest from across the pond to discuss a time travel look into American history with “Back There”! Chris is the host of Spielbergpod which Continue readingS2E13 – Back There – Twilight Zone The post S2E13 – Back There – Twilight Zone appeared first on Apathetic Enthusiasm.
