The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Its only been a few weeks since the first ever nuclear meltdown in United States history but that doesn't stop SNL from using it as inspiration for one of the most epic & outstanding sketches of the original era. Richard Benjamin, giving off strong Buck Henry vibes, takes the reins for a Saturday Night Live outing that is – while short on quantity – quite high on quality. We may not get many bits this episode, but almost all the ones we do get deliver. John Belushi's absence! The Nerds! Chico Escuela's comeback! A Rodney Dangerfield cameo?!! Indeed, there is still A LOT to talk about. Our old friend, Ian Fermaglich from Ian Talks Comedy, makes his return to The Early Years to drop some knowledge on Roseanne Rosannadanna, the Mets, and goes REAL deep on the host. Perhaps…too deep? Also…Rickie Lee Jones is the musical guest.---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

PRAISING KANE returns with 1984's RACING WITH THE MOON, a pretty darn good World War II-era coming of age film starring Sean Penn & Nicolas Cage as close friends who experience a whole lot of life's trials and tribulations in the days before they are shipped off to the war. Directed by Richard Benjamin, it has a bunch of young familiar faces (including Crispin Glover and Michael Madsen), and clearly has a lot of empathy for its mixed up central characters. Oh, and of course Carol Kane is in there as well in a small - but memorable - role. All that and the latest Carol Kane news so CHECK IT OUT. The post Episode 216 – Praising Kane – Racing with the Moon (1984) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Movie of the Year: 1973WestworldThis week we discuss Westworld! Does this sci-fi/western have enough firepower to become our Movie of the Year?Westworld is a lot of things: cool, well-known, probably about 45 minutes too long. It tells the story of the eponymous Westworld (go to heck Romanworld and Medievalworld) a place for adults to put on costumes and play cowboy with their friends. Maybe intercourse a few robo-ladies together like pals.As the Go-Go's tell us: Vacation, all I ever wanted; vacation, had to get away. But did they also not teach us: Vacation, meant to be spent all alone. Ominous.Conceived of after writer-director Michael Crichton looked at a Pirates of the Caribbean automaton that could raise and lower its hand and say “shiver me timbers,” and got all spooked, thinking, “my god what is stopping this perfect machine from killing me, writer-director Michael Crichton,” Westworld is about an amusement park gone bonkers. The robots, whose job it is to get banged and murdered, freak out for some unexplained reason and start killing guests. One of these robots, played by Yul Brynner, kills Christian Bale, played by James Brolin, and then stalks 1973 superstar Richard Benjamin through the entire park. And if that sounds interesting, you're right, it sounds super interesting. Even now, I'm like, this movie must be interesting, right? Many are surprised to hear that Michael Crichton not only wrote this movie but directed it as well. Was having such an inexperienced director the greatest idea? Does it show at all in the movie? We also explore Westerns and their influence on/by masculinity. And, of course, we cover Yul "Be Sorry" Brynner. All this AND the stuff that I forgot because I need to go get in a line to fill my car up with gas! Born in NYC way back in 1938 to a garment district worker, Richard Benjamin met his wife to this very day, fellow actress Paula Prentiss, and would appear with her in several theatrical, filmic and televised roles (starting with late 60s sitcom He & She, oft referenced as a template for the iconic Mary Tyler Moore show.) This short lived but critically beloved series kicked off a long career in both comedic and dramatic cinematic roles that began with 1969's box office smash Goodbye Columbus alongside Ali McGraw, and went on to include such cultural touchstones as Catch 22, Diary of a Mad Housewife, Portnoy's Complaint and Westworld. Later works included the wide ranging Buck Henry science fiction satire Quark (which took on everything from Star Trek, Star Wars and 2001 to Zardoz in its all too brief late 70s run), Love at First Bite, Scavenger Hunt and How to Beat the High Co$t of Living, before moving into an exclusively directorial role with the Peter O'Toole vehicle My Favorite Year, and a short run of successful comedies like Tom Hanks' Money Pit, Melanie Griffith's Milk Money, Whoopi Golberg/Ted Danson film Made in America and the Cher/Winona Ryder hit Mermaids. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're maintaining course on our dark path down creepy 70's sci fi as we explore two trailblazers in the world of robotics and AI: 1973's Westworld starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, James Brolin, Dick Van Patten, Steve Franken and Star Trek's Majel Barrett up against 1975's The Stepford Wives starring Katherine Ross, Paula Prentiss, Peter Masterson, Tina Louise, Nanette Newman and a whole slew of middle aged men to prove that men can design women better than anybody. My guests today are series regulars, David Johnson, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Robertson. Before we roll, the synopses: Set in a disturbingly near future, Westworld transports rich and lonely swinging singles Peter Martin and John Blane into a theme park /resort called Westworld populated by incredibly life like robots, including a black clad Gunslinger, who inhabit an 1880's Western town and are there to be shot, fought and screwed to the whims and pleasure of the resort's guests. But when the robots start to malfunction and go on a rampage against all humans, guess who feels really stupid? The Stepford Wives tells of the Eberharts, Walter and Johanna and their two daughters who escape the rat race of Manhattan and move to idyllic suburban town of Stepford, Connecticut. It's a perfect suburban dream for Walter but it turns out to be a nightmare for Joanna when she finds out that all the women are subservient, hard cleaning, perfectly domesticated sex objects for their husbands. The reason? (Spoiler Alert!) THEY'VE BEEN TURNED INTO ROBOTS! Which robot movie wins?Find out!

This episode we're traveling back to 1993 and checking the screening times for the Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson led movie Made In America. This is Will Smith's 2nd major film and the first time he gets to work with actress Nia Long, they will notably work together later on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Jennifer Tilly plays a young aerobics instructor and girlfriend to Ted Danson's character. Made In America focuses on the hilarity of an artificial insemination gone wrong, but 18 years later. Searching for answers, relationships, and love leads to some pretty enjoyable 90's comedy/hi-jinks. Directed by Richard Benjamin, will this be a movie rental fav or a movie theater regret? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loyaloats/message

Hi to Everyone, my friends, fans, and followers. I am your host, "Linda Gaye Scott". I hope You had a Wonderful Holiday Season, and "Welcome to 2022". I believe this New Year can bring many exciting opportunities into ALL of our lives. So, be on a staunch Lookout !!! **This "3rd episode" is an emotional one for me. So, let's stay together, hang on and travel with me on this Very Bumpy Road, Indeed. Whoa “WELCOME”. !!! Previously, on my 2nd Episode, I talked about why I was on the Cover of Jan and Dean Take LINDA Surfin, Jan mooning me on Sunset Blvd, Easter Vacation on Palm Cnyn Dr. in Palm Springs. Finishing school in Switzerland, AND Losing my Virginity,...In this, my 3rd Episode, I skip forward 10 years, and talk about Westworld written and directed by Dr. Michael Crichton and some of this Episode is about Michael and me. Hence the name “Westworld, Crichton and Me” !….One afternoon, I had just finished my jog, was totally out of breath, when my friend Jim Brolin was driving by and stopped to say Hi as he and his wife Jane were neighbors. We chatted for a minute or two and he asked me to come by for a glass of wine. I took a quick shower, got dressed and stopped by their place. We all talked a bit and shortly after he mentioned there might or could be a part in an upcoming film at MGM & of course, my ears perked as I was very interested. Within a couple of days I had an appointment at MGM studios, where I had an interview for a role in an upcoming movie called "WESTWORLD" with Michael Crichton as Director. Who? I didn't know this director, never heard of him but anything can happen in Hollywood's film industry so I thought, it's MGM, a highly respected and well known studio, been around for decades and who, by the way, am I to question this opportunity!!! I entered the MGM lot and was ushered into a building with long corridors and many doors. Next I was led into an office where I was introduced to a very tall gentleman. At first I was taken aback by his height which seemed to be at least 6'7" and soon after learned he was 6'9". He was youngish, about 30 but quite attractive. I was delighted as he immediately put me at ease with his warm demeanor and Big Smile.. With that comfort level I was able to express my thoughts with great ease and enthusiasm. The amazing thing was ... I felt as if I'd known him for some time. Now, I assume almost everyone who is listening to this has had a familiar feeling about someone they've just met at one time or another, but on an interview well, I must say, it was unusual for me. I think you might say "we clicked & Boom, there was definitely Chemistry". As Michael put on his glasses, his eyes seemed to stare at me, almost through me which was rather strange, as if he'd known me for ages.Truly, it was almost an out of body experience (which I'd never had), but I was on an interview for an acting role and simply had to be professional and contain myself. After all, I had met him only minutes earlier. Then, a calmness took over and things returned to normal, my interview was over and as I said my good-byes I actually felt relieved in a way...Next thing I knew, I was contacted and told I had been accepted for the part of Arlette in Westworld. Well, Well, of course, I was delighted and very excited to learn I would be working with Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin & Jim Brolin. I vividly recall how thrilled I was. Oh, I couldn't wait and was very excited to tell my mom and especially that Jim Brolin was responsible for me having the interview in the first place. (*The well known actor Josh Brolin is Jim's son and of course the beautiful Award Winning Actress Barbra Streisand is Jim's wife.)As you know, I have acted in many TV shows and films, & am familiar with what goes on & how movie sets work, etc., As you know, I have acted in many TV shows and films.

This week we take a look back at the Westworld original movie from 1973 that inspired the current hit HBO series. We'll dive into some information about the Westworld movie cast, compare the Westworld movie vs show, give our own Westworld film review and rating, and more. Let's enjoy ourselves as we talk about some murderous western robots! (Make sure to try out listening to the podcast episode and rate us on your favorite podcast app!) Westworld Film Summary At an amusement park containing three different 'worlds,' Westworld, Medieval World, and Roman World, visitors pay $1000 per day to play out their fantasies no matter how good intentioned or ill-intentioned they are. However, when a virus begins to plague the robots and androids that are the main part of the entertainment, begin to act differently and eventually become violently towards the park's guests. The film eventually focuses on one chase of a seemingly unstoppable killing robot after a man named Peter, who just had his friend John murdered. Does he survive? Watch the film, listen to the podcast episode, or read on to find out! Westworld By Michael Crichton Photo by Jon Chase While Crichton had already made one TV film prior to Westworld, this movie was his feature film directorial debut. And of course, Crichton was more of a writer with his career, therefore; this film was scripted by him as well. There was actually a question of why Crichton just didn't make this story into a book. He felt this story was more of a visual-told one. While we appreciate Crichton being willing to make this into a feature film, we think it would've done well as a book / novel as well. Many of us made the point that Westworld has many parallels to his famed Jurassic Park novel, which as we know was made into a film itself (check out our podcast episode for Jurassic Park). Essentially, both stories involve a tourist park attractions attacking its visitors: one story has robots killing and the other has dinosaurs killing. While the main story elements remained the same, we are glad he wrote Jurassic Park as it was turned into one of the best films ever made. Westworld Movie Cast Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger Yul Brynner in MGM's Westworld The legendary Yul Brynner was the marketed character in this film. Understandably so though, as he became a household name in the year of 1956. That year he starred in three major films including The King and I (his most well known role), The Ten Commandments, and Anastasia. He won the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in The King and I. Possibly one of the best years any actor has ever had. We also cannot disregard his performance in the original film of The Magnificent Seven either. His role in Westworld was definitely a bit different, although our podcast host Chris states he is basically re-acting his The Magnificent Seven role, but just as a robot. In any case, Brynner actually doesn't have many lines, most of which take place in a bar scene towards the beginning of the film. While he his dialogue was limited, it was quite comical as he made fun of Richard Benjamin's character in the bar scene. While the last third of the film there is limited dialogue, it consists of Yul Brynner chasing Richard Benjamin's character. Maybe a bit too long of a 'chase' scene, but Brynner simply walks stoically with his shining eyes (which we loved by the way). That combined with the music, does create quite a suspenseful feeling. Richard Benjamin (left) & James Brolin (right) in MGM's Westworld Richard Benjamin as Peter Martin Benjamin actually has quite a few acting credits, but it seems that only a few were a success, including this role in Westworld. It seems he eventually became a bit more of a success with directing as he directed films such as The Money Pit and Made in America. We thought he did a decent job with this character. He is comical at times when he is timid next to his friend John as they begin to exp...
