In this episode of the show our trip through John Landis comedies of the 1980s continues with Trading Places. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about this movie as less an example of the 80s-native edgy sketch comedy but rather an evocation of the spirit of classic screwball comedies in the style of Frank Capra and Howard Hawks. We talk about the chemistry between Dan Aykroyd and Eddie Murphy, Hollywood slowly waking up to a possibility that a black star could carry a movie (but still only in an ensemble or a buddy setup) and where John Landis and his edge fits in all this. Finally, we discuss the infamous blackface scene and the gorilla gag, while also wondering about how exactly trading worked in the pre-digital era. In this episode of the show we are officially diving into the third and final month of our Spring of Comedy where we are going to talk about John Landis-directed comedies of the 1980s. And we can only begin this journey by donning our G-Men suits and sunglasses to talk about The Blues Brothers. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about the long and eventful history of how this movie came together, how the Blues Brothers phenomenon reinvigorated the careers of blues and soul icons, how it nearly bankrupted the studio thanks to the combination of Dan Aykroyd's propensity to write stream-of-consciousness epics posing as scripts and John Landis's desire to go big instead of going home and how this first SNL movie set the course for many others to follow. We also talk about the nexus of sketch comedy, The Blues Brothers as a piece of counterculture and one of the great American musicals and an ode to a great friendship between Aykroyd and Belushi. [15x4] This week, we're venturing into the neon-lit streets of 1990s Pittsburgh to discuss a cult classic that blends mobster tropes with fangs: John Landis's Innocent Blood. We follow Marie (Anne Parillaud), a vampire who only feeds on "bad guys", as things get messy once she fails to properly finish off a ruthless mob boss, Sal "The Shark" Macelli (Robert Loggia), leading to a literal vampire mafia takeover. And making his debut on the show to talk about this overlooked Landis movie, it's film writer and podcaster Tim Coleman...

"Un Príncipe en Nueva York" ("Coming to America", 1988), de John Landis. Junto a Felipe Hinojosa Paredes.
This week, Patreon supporter Matt Bates, the Black Country Vlogger, brings us Innocent Blood (1992) for our Pain and Pleasure theme -- a film that revels in the push and pull between the two. Innocent Blood (1992) came about in a roundabout way, which is fitting for a film that defies easy categorisation. John Landis had originally been developing a vampire project called Red Sleep -- a wild premise about Las Vegas being run by vampires -- before Warner Bros. passed and handed him a first-time script by Michael Wolk. The film had an entirely different trajectory before Landis came aboard -- Jack Sholder had been set to direct with Lara Flynn Boyle and Dennis Hopper in the leads before creative differences saw all three replaced. Landis cast French actress Anne Parillaud fresh off La Femme Nikita, and filmed primarily in Pittsburgh's Little Italy neighbourhood after a location visit changed his original plan to shoot in Philadelphia. The MPAA initially slapped it with an NC-17, forcing further cuts to secure an R rating. Landis described his vision as "a Hammer film directed by Scorsese." It opened in September 1992 to a modest domestic gross but has since built a devoted cult following among fans of horror-comedy and 90s vampire films.Find Matt here - https://www.youtube.com/c/blackcountryvloggerTRAILER GUY PLOT SYNOPSISIn a world where the streets of Pittsburgh run red... one woman has a code. She is Marie. She is beautiful. She is deadly. And she only eats bad people. But one night she makes a mistake. She doesn't finish the job. Marie has no choice but to team up with one increasingly bewildered cop. Because you cannot arrest something that cannot die. In this episode of Sounds Like Comics, we switch gears to revisit National Lampoon's Animal House — the rowdy, irreverent comedy classic from John Landis that helped redefine the genre. We dive into its outrageous humour, iconic moments, and lasting influence on college comedies that followed.
Released in 1978 and directed by John Landis, National Lampoon's Animal House follows the anarchic members of Delta House fraternity at Faber College as they wage war against pompous Dean Wormer (John Vernon) and the rival Omega House. Written by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney, and Chris Miller, and starring John Belushi as the legendary John "Bluto" Blutarsky, the film became one of the highest-grossing comedies of its era and helped launch the modern R-rated comedy.Jeff Nelligan's satirical new book When the Germans Bombed Pearl Harbor: Animal House in Western Intellectual Thought subjects the film to mock-scholarly analysis, taking its title from Bluto's historically garbled motivational speech. Casting Animal House as a Homeric odyssey and a meditation on society's moral impulse, Nelligan lampoons academic pretension while celebrating a comedy that has embedded itself permanently in American culture. Nelligan is a Washington, D.C. public affairs executive, Army veteran, and author of several previous books on parenting and political life. Mike talks with him about the film's enduring legacy and the making of the book.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Dead Time with Dead October Paranormal Buckle up for another dive into the darkness, though this time, the "spirits" might be a little more lighthearted than usual. In this episode of Dead Time, the boys are hunkering down in the studio to pull back the curtain on their latest investigations. We're revisiting the archives and reacting to some of the most chilling (and questionable) evidence clips from the Dead October Paranormal vault. This week on Born to Watch, Whitey, Gow and Damo head back to 1983 for a full Trading Places 1983 Review, revisiting one of the most iconic comedy films of the 1980s. Directed by John Landis and starring Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd and Jamie Lee Curtis, Trading Places is a movie that perfectly captures the raw, outrageous humour of the decade. But more than 40 years later, the big question for the Born to Watch crew is simple: Does this comedy classic still hold up?Set in the world of high-stakes Philadelphia commodities trading, Trading Places follows privileged stockbroker Louis Winthorpe III (Dan Aykroyd) and street hustler Billy Ray Valentine (Eddie Murphy). When two absurdly wealthy brothers, Randolph and Mortimer Duke, decide to test a social experiment for a one-dollar bet, the lives of both men are turned upside down.Winthorpe loses everything.Billy Ray gains everything. And the Dukes sit back and watch the chaos unfold. For Whitey, this rewatch brings back the wild spirit of 80s comedies, a time when films were raw, unfiltered and packed with unforgettable moments. From the opening scenes inside the Duke & Duke trading empire to the infamous orange juice futures finale, the movie moves at a relentless pace.Gow dives into the film's history, breaking down how Eddie Murphy was just beginning his meteoric rise after Saturday Night Live. His performance as Billy Ray Valentine demonstrates the charisma and comedic timing that would soon make him one of the decade's biggest movie stars.Meanwhile, Damo delivers what the listeners came for, the legendary Snorbs Report, analysing one of the most famous scenes in the film and debating whether Jamie Lee Curtis might have the most unexpected reveal in 80s cinema history. But Trading Places is more than just a comedy. At its core, the film is a clever satire about class, wealth and power. The Duke brothers treat human lives like chess pieces, manipulating events purely to prove a point about social status. What makes the story work so well is how Murphy and Aykroyd eventually turn the tables. And when the revenge finally arrives, it is glorious.Throughout the episode, the Born to Watch crew break down some of the most memorable moments in the movie, including:• Eddie Murphy announces himself as a superstar• Dan Aykroyd's legendary drunken Santa meltdown• The outrageous Duke brothers• Jamie Lee Curtis' scene-stealing performance• The chaotic train disguise sequence• The brilliant orange juice trading finaleThe boys also tackle their regular segments, including Overs and Unders, Hit Sleeper Dud for 1983, the Rank Bank, and, of course, Damo's Snorbs Report.Along the way, they debate Eddie Murphy's place among the greatest comedy stars of all time and ask whether Hollywood would even dare make a movie like Trading Places today.Because let's be honest.Movies like this simply do not get made anymore.Fearless, ridiculous and packed with classic one-liners, Trading Places remains one of the defining comedy films of the 80s.But does it still deserve its legendary reputation?Whitey, Gow and Damo are here to find out.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Trading Places Eddie Murphy's true breakout movie? Is the orange juice trading finale the greatest comedy ending ever? And is Winthorpe's Santa suit the most disgusting costume in movie history?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.auListen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods.#TradingPlaces #BornToWatch #EddieMurphy #DanAykroyd #JamieLeeCurtis #80sMovies #ComedyClassic #MoviePodcast #FilmReview #80sComedy

This episode of Dead Time with Dead October Paranormal dives into the dark underbelly of Tinseltown to ask the question: Is Hollywood truly as evil as the rumors suggest? Join the Dead October Paranormal crew—Castle Cage, Jonathan Martinez, and Joseph Bernal—as they trade haunted asylums for the glitz and shadows of Los Angeles. In this hard-hitting investigation, the team examines the unsettling "creepy things" reported by insiders and researchers alike. From the tragic echoes of the Golden Age to the modernday whispers of corruption, they explore whether the city's foundations are built on more than just broken dreams. In This Episode: • The Hollywood Narrative: The crew debates the long-standing theories surrounding the industry's "dark side" and why so many urban legends center on this specific zip code. • Rituals & Released Files: The team digs into recently surfaced reports and "files" detailing alleged occult rituals and clandestine ceremonies that have long remained hidden from the public eye. • The Cannibalism Taboo: We tackle the shocking and controversial claims of cannibalism within elite circles, looking for the truth behind the headlines. • The Investigation: As paranormal experts, the crew looks for the spiritual residue left behind by these alleged acts—does the energy of Hollywood feel different? "They say the stars shine bright in Hollywood, but we're looking at the shadows they cast. Are these stories just urban legends, or are we looking at a systemic darkness?" Eddie Murphy plays Prince Akeem and, with the help of a whole lotta latex, several other supporting characters in the 1988 hit, "Coming to America." Back then, the movie charmed audiences and critics alike, and solidified Murphy as box office royalty. It also gave him an opportunity to be in a rom com. But now, decades later, is 80's Eddie still a King of Comedy? Should the barbershop scenes end up on the cutting room floor? And, are our two love interests following a rose-pedaled path to heartbreak? The Old Roommates head to Queens and give it all a revisit through their middle-aged lens. On this edition of Parallax Views, we continue our annual Spooky Season series with a chilling deep dive into one of Hollywood's most infamous real-life tragedies — the Twilight Zone: The Movie helicopter crash. Journalist Steve Chain, author of Fly By Night: The Secret Story of Steven Spielberg, Warner Bros., and the Twilight Zone Deaths, joins the show to uncover the haunting true story that forever changed the film industry. Chain's explosive investigation revisits the 1982 disaster that claimed the lives of actor Vic Morrow and two children on set — and the five-year legal battle that followed. Was it a tragic accident, or was there a cover-up to protect some of Hollywood's most powerful names, including John Landis and Steven Spielberg? Chain pulls back the curtain on the shocking evidence, courtroom drama, and corporate maneuvering behind one of Tinseltown's darkest chapters. As part of Parallax Views' spooky season lineup, this episode isn't about ghosts or monsters — it's about real-life horror: power, negligence, and the human cost of spectacle. If you're fascinated by true crime, Hollywood scandals, media history, or the eerie intersection of fame and tragedy, you won't want to miss this one.
(WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE) **LISTENER DISCRETION ADVISED, GRAPHIC DESCRIPTIONS OF TRAUMATIC DEATH INVOLVING CHILDREN** Shortly after 2:00 A.M. on July 23, 1982, actor Vic Morrow paced nervously in front of a mock Vietnamese village at the Indian Dunes park just north of Los Angeles. Morrow could not help but feel uneasy as he watched the Huey helicopter approach the village for a final rehearsal. Years earlier, Morrow had had a premonition that he was going to die in a helicopter crash. . . . Adam kicks off the show by reminiscing about his co-starring role in Wreck-It Ralph and the surprising reaction it still gets from fans. He then unveils yet another classic Al Pacino scene, this time with Jay Mohr putting his own spin on the character—proving once again that Pacino impressions never get old. From there, Adam riffs on coaster weight, the gnarly side effects of Niacin, Biden's cancer diagnosis, the sheer brilliance of pit crews, and the fine line between first and last place—not just in racing, but in life. Next, Jay Chandrasekhar joins the show and dives into:The universal boyhood obsession with foot speed (because being the fastest kid on the playground is basically royalty). His journey through comedy as an Indian kid in grade school, dealing with stereotypes and British influence over India. The decision to cast himself in movies and TV shows instead of waiting for Hollywood (considering the only Indian "stars" he saw were Fisher Stevens and Peter Sellers in brownface). The hilariously awkward story of wearing his wife's underpants (sometimes you just gotta improvise). Why comedy films should be communal experiences—because laughing alone just isn't the same.Jay and Adam also break down the realities of directing low-budget movies vs. TV shows, and Jay introduces his new app, VouchVault, which he swears will revolutionize review sites and help him finally get revenge on Rotten Tomatoes. They wrap up their chat by agreeing that seeing Phish live is overrated, and Jay shares his comedic influences: John Landis, Eddie Murphy, and Richard Pryor. Naturally, both Jay and Adam declare Spinal Tap the greatest comedy of all time. Jason "Mayhem" Miller joins the show and kicks off the news with a must-see clip of Adam singing "Big Bottoms" with John Popper. From there, the trio dives into the top stories of the day, including:Joe Biden's cancer diagnosis.NYC's most notorious repeat offender—a guy who's been caught 134 times for stealing and still hasn't stopped. And finally, the mind-blowing possibility of science turning lead into gold.Get it on!FOR MORE WITH JAY CHANDRASEKHAR:INSTAGRAM: @jaychandrasekharTWITTER: @jaychandrasekhaAPP: https://www.vouchvault.com/FOR MORE WITH JASON “MAYHEM” MILLER:INSTAGRAM: @mayhemmillerTWITTER: @mayhemmillerWEBSITE: magnvs.io/pages/summit?via=mayhemThank you for supporting our sponsors:BetOnlineCalderaLab.com/ADAMGo to https://hometitlelock.com/adamcarolla and use promo code ADAM to get a FREE title history report so you can find out if you're already a victim AND 14 days of protection for FREE!
