The public has spoken and Team Adelaide has been all but vanquished in the city council elections. This week, we take a closer look at this unusual blip in the history of local democracy in Adelaide. Team Adelaide – a collection of aligned candidates who essentially took power at Town Hall after the 2018 local government elections – prompts strong reactions. After four very acrimonious years, we look back on Town Hall's acrimonious experiment with factional politics. Joining us first is Bension Siebert, the former InDaily reporter who broke the story. Later we'll be joined by InDaily's Stephanie Richards and CityMag's Angela Skujins. Today's guest is my good friend Jerome Burns. For those of you who might not know Jerome, he is that crazy trumpet player that has been posting his insane transcriptions for the trumpet of Meshuggah guitar solos. Jerome is a graduate of the Manhattan School of music where he studied under Mark Gould, and is also a specialist on the music of Karheilnz Stockhausen, having completed the Master's Degree in Aus Licht under the tutelage of Marco Blaauw in Holland. This episode deals with many subjects most notably “student” mentality and its trappings, and the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. This episode was recorded over a year ago, so some of the talk might seem dated. I wanted to have Jerome on because he was successful at something that the vast majority of people in the professional classical music sphere failed to do: create meaningful and unique online musical content during the COVID lockdowns. While even lauded professionals were posting lackluster videos of themselves playing orchestral excerpts and warmups, Jerome delighted us all every Monday with his fiendishly difficult and profound renditions of metal music transcriptions. By doing this, in my mind, he joined the ranks of other artists like Håkan Hardenberger, Wynton Marsalis, Dan Rosenboom, Peter Evans, Stephanie Richards, and a selected few more who offered listeners something worth their attention. I eagerly await what is next from Jerome, when he finally puts all he has learned in the last two years into a practical setting, you will surely see me purchasing the first ticket. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

For the past five years, few people in South Australian public life have had a weight of responsibility as heavy as that of Penny Wright.Penny is the Guardian for Children and Young People – it's her job to advocate for children and young people in care in South Australia. Technically, the kids she represents are under the guardianship of the chief executive of the Department for Child Protection – they could be living with relatives, a foster family, in residential care or even living independently. As she leaves the role, she talks to us about the system that's supposed to care for our most vulnerable children: its strengths and weaknesses, and the reality of life for many children in care in this state. Also joining us is InDaily reporter Stephanie Richards, who has covered Penny's time as guardian in detail.Penny Wright's final article for InDaily – on issues with the youth detention centre – can be read here. Today's guest is Steph Richards. Editing this episode in the wake of the New York Philharmonic's news, seemed serendipitous. During this pandemic we have all been scrambling to find a way forward, and most artists have been lost in this effort, because they have not been accustomed to swimming in the waters of change and hunger for far too long. This is obviously not the case with artists like Stephanie Richards, whose latest project, Supersense, is awe inspiring. Steph is NOT going to be caught in the wave of extinction facing many artists in the coming years. Conversations like the one you are about to hear matter, it's time to understand that the people we are propping up in this fetishistic madness, are those stuck in the structures that led to a catastrophe which Covid has only accelerated: boring programming, poor audience relations, unsound financial practices, and exorbitant salaries for administrators, music directors, and concertmasters. For those out there listening who are starting their careers, or who still have ambition, it's time to think more deeply about what it means to be an artist, and take your destiny into your own hands…the institutions won't be here for you. But for now, if Mark Swed's list constitutes the heroes of the industry…count me out, and sign me up a ticket to the first Steph Richards or Dan Rosenboom show at the earliest convenience. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Guthrie lighting designer Stephanie Richards recommends you catch the final weekend of “Beowulf.” Walking Shadow Theatre Company’s John Heimbuch gives a one-man retelling of the Old English epic poem. Richards says the story, which features a monster that silently kills people in groups, feels eerily timely. You can watch Heimbuch’s performance livestreamed via Facebook as you cower behind your own door from a much smaller — but also deadly — monster. Amateur musician Dana Farmer thinks you should check out the new Facebook group “Livestream Cover Challenge.” Local musician Joe Scarpellino started the group as a way to pass the time during the coronavirus pandemic. How it works: Musicians challenge each other to cover songs, and then the person who has been challenged has 24 hours to respond with a performance. In just a few weeks, the group has grown to more than 25,000 musicians, both professional and amateur, and Farmer says the vibe is wonderfully supportive and enthusiastic. Artist Heidi Jeub is finding Mary Bruno’s “Quarantine Storytime” to be a much-needed sanity break. Bruno is a letter-press printer with her own company “Bruno Press.” At noon each day, Bruno takes a break to read her favorite children’s books. Jeub says Bruno’s enthusiasm is appealing to both kids and parents alike, but what makes her particularly charming is her ability as a letter-press printer to appreciate illustrations and design. You can find her on her Facebook page.
