Selina Ott: The History Making and Award Winning International Trumpet Solo and Recording Artist

In 2018, Austrian trumpeter Selina Ott made history by becoming the first woman to win first prize in the 70-year history of the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Munich. That landmark achievement launched a remarkable career that has taken her to concert halls around the world, performing both as a soloist and with major orchestras. Her debut album, Trumpet Concertos, was honored with the Opus Klassik Award in 2021, and she has since released two more acclaimed solo recordings. Though still early in her musical journey, Selina has already established herself as one of the leading voices of her generation. In this conversation, I had the great pleasure of speaking with Selina about some of the defining moments in her life and career so far. In part one, we begin with her recent experience performing Wynton Marsalis's Trumpet Concerto with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop. She shares what it was like to collaborate with Marsalis himself and how that experience left a lasting impact. We then reflect on her preparation for, and participation in, the ARD Munich competition—what it took to succeed, and how her life changed overnight following her win. From there, we rewind even further to talk about her early beginnings on the trumpet as a young girl, and the important influence of legendary trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger.[Subscriber Content] In part two, we shift our focus to the balance between orchestral and solo playing, and what it really means to be a well-rounded soloist in today's musical world. We also touch on Selina's relationship with social media and why she chooses to keep a relatively low profile online. One of the more unique aspects of her life outside of music is her passion for horses—she owns several—and we explore how that love for animals complements her musical life. Selina also gives us insight into how she chooses her concert repertoire, both for solo recitals and orchestral performances. And finally, I ask her what advice she would give to a 10-year-old girl dreaming of becoming a musician one day.DoricoProfessional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Bob Malone has quite literally helped shape the sound of modern trumpet playing around the world. He's been designing trumpets for nearly 40 years and is widely recognized as one of the premier trumpet designers in the world. His instruments are played in major orchestras across the globe, and his influence can be heard through the artistry of many of the finest trumpet players of our time.I've had the privilege of knowing Bob for almost 50 years, and watching his evolution—from passionate trumpet player to visionary instrument designer—has been nothing short of inspiring. So it was a real pleasure to sit down with him and explore the journey that has defined his life's work.In Part 1, we kick off our conversation by diving into how Bob has applied the Japanese concept of Kaizen—the philosophy of continuous improvement—to his work over the years. From there, we go back to his early days as a trumpet player and explore how his passion for the instrument led him to the world of design and craftsmanship. He shares how key figures like Larry Minick and Tom Stevens mentored him and helped shape his path, leading to the founding of Bob Malone's Brass Technology, and eventually, his pivotal role at Yamaha Corporation.Bob also recounts his first major design collaboration with trumpeter Bobby Shew—a project made possible through the support of his close friend, Kenzo Kawasaki. In Part 2 [Subscriber Content], we get into some of Bob's experiences working with a remarkable roster of trumpet luminaries, including Håkan Hardenberger, John Hagstrom, Allen Vizzutti, David Bilger, Chris Martin, Tom Rolfs, Wayne Bergeron, Bo Nilsson, and conductor Andris Nelsons. His stories are a fascinating glimpse into the minds of these incredible musicians and the collaborative process behind great instrument design. And since Bob has spent so much of his career on the road, we also talk about his favorite travel destinations, memorable meals, and how he manages the inevitable jet lag that comes with a global career.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? I was there for two events: a panel honoring the late Tom Stevens and a recital by Håkan Hardenberger and Roland Pöntinen. This episode is a reflection on Stevens' efforts to elevate the trumpet beyond flashy technical pieces, and his plight to create a catalog of new music for trumpet players. I also discuss Hardenberger's performance highlighting Stevens' influence and contributions, reinforcing his enduring impact on the trumpet world. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/artssalon/support

Jörg Widmann is one of the most versatile and fascinating classical artists in the world today. He is one of the world's most recognized modern composers, with premiers by major orchestras around the world. He has also appeared as a clarinet soloist with many of the world's top ensembles. As a conductor, he was the Music Director of the Irish Chamber Orchestra for ten years. His body of work is amazing, so I wanted to find out... how has he been able to accomplish so much in such a short time? He was gracious enough to take time out of his very busy schedule to speak with me.A defining quality for Jörg is his curiosity. He talks about how this curiosity began in his childhood. While discussing his curiosity and studies at Juilliard, we fall into the subject of German vs. French clarinet systems. We then use three pieces to discuss in depth how he approaches composition: His massive oratorio ARCHE, his Ad Absurdum, written for trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov, and finally, the Trumpet Concerto he wrote for Håkan Hardenberger. Jörg also talks about the similarities in his mind between Miles Davis... and Pierre Boulez.Dorico Professional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Today is a real treat for me, because Gustav is one of my best friends and one of the best people I know. Gustav Melander is regarded as one of Europe's most talented young trumpet players. Having studied with Bo Nilsson and Prof. Håkan Hardenberger at the Malmö Academy of Music, since graduating, Gustav has gone on to become one of the most in demand players. Currently the tenured Co-principal Trumpet of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Gustav also regularly features with other Scandinavian Orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. As a soloist, Melander performs regularly and has made notable solo appearances making his debut in 2014 with the Malmö Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra and in December 2016 performed Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Passionate about education, Melander has a number of students and has been a trumpet teacher at the Malmö Academy of Music since 2015. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Today's guest is my good friend Jerome Burns. For those of you who might not know Jerome, he is that crazy trumpet player that has been posting his insane transcriptions for the trumpet of Meshuggah guitar solos. Jerome is a graduate of the Manhattan School of music where he studied under Mark Gould, and is also a specialist on the music of Karheilnz Stockhausen, having completed the Master's Degree in Aus Licht under the tutelage of Marco Blaauw in Holland. This episode deals with many subjects most notably “student” mentality and its trappings, and the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. This episode was recorded over a year ago, so some of the talk might seem dated. I wanted to have Jerome on because he was successful at something that the vast majority of people in the professional classical music sphere failed to do: create meaningful and unique online musical content during the COVID lockdowns. While even lauded professionals were posting lackluster videos of themselves playing orchestral excerpts and warmups, Jerome delighted us all every Monday with his fiendishly difficult and profound renditions of metal music transcriptions. By doing this, in my mind, he joined the ranks of other artists like Håkan Hardenberger, Wynton Marsalis, Dan Rosenboom, Peter Evans, Stephanie Richards, and a selected few more who offered listeners something worth their attention. I eagerly await what is next from Jerome, when he finally puts all he has learned in the last two years into a practical setting, you will surely see me purchasing the first ticket. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Virtuoso Swedish trumpeter and frequent Boston Symphony Orchestra collaborator Håkan Hardenberger is the beneficiary of a new BSO commissioned concerto from the British composer Helen Grime, a former Tanglewood Music Center Fellow with a dynamic, sparkling compositional style. Andris Nelsons will conduct the piece "Trumpet Concerto: night-sky-blue" on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. along with Sergei Rachmaninoff's “Vocalise” for orchestra, which closes with the composer's substantial Symphony No. 3, a late work characterized by scintillating orchestration. The Grime concerto, which is inspired by images of nocturnal gardens, has been commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation, Library of Congress, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Since trumpet soloist Matilda Lloyd burst on to the scene with successes in the BBC Young Musician of the Year brass final and what was then the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Awards, she has cemented her reputation as one of the outstanding performers of her generation. Now 25, she's combining her busy solo career with studies in Malmo with trumpet legend, Håkan Hardenberger. Matilda looks back on her musical career to date, including a performance with Cory Band that she credits among her favourite concert experiences. She discusses her musical roots, from finding an old trumpet in the back of her parents' cupboard to experimenting with the cello and finding her passion for standing out front as a soloist. Matilda, who was speaking from Germany, also discusses life in lockdown, which meant practising amongst the cattle at her parents' farm, and she looks ahead as her diary of engagements starts to look a little more like normal once again. But first, how has she been getting on during these very strange times?

Belgian trumpeter Jeroen Berwaerts is a musical force to be reckoned with, whose all-embracing love of music knows no genre boundaries. Praised for his outstanding technical capabilities and sensitive musicality, his repertoire encompasses every epoch, from baroque to contemporary music and jazz.  Placing the standard repertoire for trumpet in ingenious programmes and unusual contexts has become Jeroen Berwaerts’ calling card. One such programme places Handel’s Feuerwerksmusik and dances from Rameau’s opera Dardarus alongside chansons by Jacques Brel. The singing roles in such programmes is generally taken up by Jeroen Berwaerts himself, who – alongside his active career as a trumpeter – completed jazz vocal studies at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent  Jeroen Berwaerts’ extraordinary commitment to contemporary music is evident in the numerous world premieres he has given, including Toshio Hosokawa’s second trumpet concerto Im Nebel and Francesco Filidei’s Carnevale. After Håkan Hardenberger he was the second trumpeter worldwide to add HK Gruber’s Busking (2007) to his repertoire.   In 2017, Jeroen Berwaerts’ discography was complemented by the album Signals from Heaven, recorded with Salaputia Brass, with whom he is trumpeter, jazz-vocalist and ensemble director. His recording of Paul Hindemith’s trumpet sonata with Alexander Melnikov was released on Harmonia Mundi in 2015. In 2012 he recorded Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Orchestra under Teodor Currentzis with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the same year he recorded Toshio Hosokawa’s Voyage VII with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg.  Jeroen Berwaerts studied in Karlsruhe with the celebrated trumpet virtuoso Reinhold Friedrich. Since 2008, he has been a Professor of Trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover. Jeroen Berwaerts is Professor in Residence at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is an official Yamaha Artist.
