Fentanyl is a powerful morphine substitute, but it is also incredibly addictive – millions struggle with weaning themselves off it. And of the 600,000 drug deaths worldwide each year, the World Health Organisation estimates 80% are due to opioids in general, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl being a growing part of the problem. New work with genetically manipulated mice suggests that fentanyl affects two parts of the brain, one associated with the high, but also another that regulates fear. This knowledge could aid in the development of treatments to reduce addiction to the opioid. Early developers: Long before a developing implants into a mother's uterus, in fact as the fertilised egg divides for the first time into a pair of cells, which line becomes the future baby and which will become the 'life support' system of the placenta has been decided. Embryologist Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz explains why this early unfolding of the genetic programme is important, and why it's taken so long to discover it. Getting through pregnancy is only the first step in a person's life. Surviving childhood, particularly for our old stone age ancestors, was the next challenge. And a new study looking at children's teeth found at ancient archaeological sites gives clues as to why our ancestors fared better than the neanderthals around them during the last ice age. Supersense: twitching hairs on some caterpillars turn out to be early-warning sensors feeling the electric field of an approaching wasp, giving the potential prey precious moments to hide or escape death. Biophysicist Daniel Robert explains the challenge of seeing the electric world of insect hunters and hunted. “I don't want to keep dinosaurs alive. I want to inspire young people to combine old technologies with new technologies. If you stop understanding the past you will not find the answers for the future. And this is the big problem with digital.”    Florian Doc Kaps, ViennaFlorian Doc Kaps: is a champion of all things analogue, an out of the box thinker who believes that people are too swamped with digital things in our lives. He believes that we should on our five senses to make decisions about business, love, family and friends. Former biologist who was a foremost authority on spider eye movement (I didn't know that was a thing until I met Doc), he is also the entrepreneur who literally saved Polaroid instant photography from extinction. Do you know those big, instant cameras that make a loud click when you take a snapshot? It spits out an undeveloped photograph into your hand? Doc saved that.In 2008 the company that owned that instant film, Polaroid, was planning to shut down the last factory where it was made. Boom. The End. No more Polaroid. The end of instant photography as we knew it.Then along came Doc. He literally bought the Polaroid factory before they shut it down forever. He calls his arduous journey An Impossible Project They made a film about it, too. If you own one of those vintage cameras or see an instant photo on a refrigerator you can thank Doc. My Tools For Nomads episode with Doc Kaps explores how he saved Polaroid from extinction. We went deep into the mind of Doc and talked about the importance of analogue in our lives, about the lost art of daydreaming, his experience-store called Supersense, and what it was like growing up in Vienna, birthplace of Mozart, Beethoven and Freud. You'll love Doc Kaps just as I do. Listen and be inspired!

Still Have Peel Apart Film? It's Important That You Do This

The Phoblographer

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2022 3:41

For more stories like this, please subscribe to the Phoblographer. The sad truth is that peel-apart film has been gone for many years now. In its final, last years, it didn't get enough love. For decades, it was used primarily as a way to get a preview of what you were shooting on medium format cameras. But it evolved into other things after that. Recently, Supersense tried recreating it poorly. But if you have some of the original Fujifilm stuff, then you've got something special. Lots of folks don't know what to do with them. So we're going to walk you through. Oh, and by the way. My favorite camera to shoot peel-apart film with was always the Polaroid 180. Put it In the Fridge. Now. If you happen to get some, trust me on this. Put it in the fridge. Peel apart film is an actual film. And film has organic matter in it. Like all other organic materials, refrigeration helps preserve them. Whatever you do, don't put it in the freezer. This film has an actual chemical in it that gets sorted through the photo once you shoot and pull it. Then it develops. Putting peel apart film in the freezer lets that film bubble possibly burst. Then the film is useless. So put it in the fridge. Let it Defrost When You Want to Shoot it When you're ready to shoot your Peel apart film, let it sit outside for a while. Let it adjust to room temperature for maybe around an hour or so. This will get it prepped to shoot. And that brings us to our next step. Don't Shoot it In the Cold Years ago, you could easily shoot Peel apart film in the cold, put it in a cold plate, and then warm it up with your body heat. At this point, all Peel apart film is pretty expired. So you're best off just shooting it in warm weather. Aim for at least 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the room or the outdoor space you're shooting. Years ago, I took a date out in the winter with this film. I pulled it through the roller when it was too cold out, and the photos never developed because of that. When you pull the image, make sure you're in the warmest place possible. That will make the chemical saturation its richest. Overexpose it By at Least a Stop of Light Typically, you're supposed to overexpose expired film anyway. When you use Peel apart film, you're going to have to expose it. Use a light meter and get the best reading you possibly can. Then add a stop or so extra of light. Sometimes you'll need to add two stops. This is the only way that you can get an image that will look really great. The Secret: You Can't Overdevelop It Always remember, this isn't digital, and it's not really the darkroom. You can't overdevelop Peel apart film. You can sit there, let it develop, and it will just stop after some time. Peel apart film usually tells you how long you need to wait until it's done developing. You can underdevelop the shots, though. Don't do that. It's a waste. Keep the Other Side, It's a Negative You Can Develop at Home with Bleach Lastly, when you're done shooting, don't throw away the other side of the instant film. That side contains a negative that's easy to develop at home. Just use bleach or some toilet bowl cleaner with bleach. Then you'll be able to get a beautiful negative that you can scan in and make it look gorgeous.

Or you have thanked good fortune for having shown you the way, and not bothered to think about it. What is this power? Why have you not used it more often? Can you now utilize it to its fullest extent? The answer to the last question is: Yes, as often as you want—when you learn what it is and how you can use it. You have undoubtedly done things on a “hunch” at some time or other and later discovered that you were correct in following this unexplained direction. Perhaps you have at some time had a “feeling”—a “feeling” that led you to take the correct action in some activity, a “feeling” that you later probably called a “sixth sense.” Perhaps you may have been sitting at your telephone and thinking, “So-and-so ought to call me—I have something very important to tell him and I can't reach him”; then within minutes have the person in question telephone you! Perhaps you have been on your way home when for no apparent reason you stopped to buy a particular article. Then upon arrival home you have been told that had you telephoned you would have been asked to stop to buy that very article. Maybe you have been at a gathering when suddenly you went to find the person you came with and said, “You want to go home now, don't you?” and discovered your impression was correct. You called them “hunches” or attributed them to a “sixth sense.” You may perhaps sneer when someone talks about “mental telepathy.” Yet your so-called hunches or impressions resulting from your so-called sixth sense are no more incredulous than mental telepathy. What you perhaps fail to realize is that in addition to the five senses of the conscious level—seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting and smelling—there is a sense belonging to the Supraconscious level of the mind. It is a form of communication you are not familiar with. You encounter it infrequently. You notice it only in such rare instances as have been listed above. Yet it apparently is functioning even more thoroughly than the five senses of the conscious level. From what little is known of it, the Supraconscious sense, unlike the five senses, never rests. It is the Supersense. Alternate Universe Reality Activation  get full access to new meditations, new lectures, recordings from the reality con and the 90 day AURA meditation schedulehttps://realityrevolutionlive.com/aura45338118 BUY MY BOOK! https://www.amazon.com/Reality-Revolution-Mind-Blowing-Movement-Hack/dp/154450618X/ Listen my book on audible https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Reality-Revolution-Audiobook/B087LV1R5V Music By Mettaversetravel lightsolstice ➤ Listen on Soundcloud: http://bit.ly/2KjGlLI  ➤ Follow them on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2JW8BU2 ➤ Subscribe to their channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyvjffON2NoUvX5q_TgvVkw All My Anthony Norvell Episodes - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKv1KCSKwOo_XHLvIXgYWWKbweUfzocyZ All My Neville Goddard Videos In One Playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKv1KCSKwOo8kBZsJpp3xvkRwhbXuhg0M All my videos about Dr. Joseph Murphy - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKv1KCSKwOo_OtBhXg2s85UuZBT-OihF_ For coaching – https://www.advancedsuccessinstitute.com For all episodes of the Reality Revolution – https://www.therealityrevolution.com Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/The-Reality-Revolution-Podcast-Hosted-By-Brian-Scott-102555575116999 Join our facebook group The Reality Revolution https://www.facebook.com/groups/523814491927119 Subscribe to my Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOgXHr5S3oF0qetPfqxJfSw Contact us at media@advancedsuccessinstitute.com#supersense #lawofattraction #sixthsense

Super Lidar - Lidar for the Blind   Another interesting app that uses Lidar to assist people who are blind.   Note - in the show I called it SuperSense which is another app that this developer has also done in the past, the correct name of the app is SuperLidar.   https://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/productivity/super-lidar-lidar-blind?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter   Facebook Using A.I. to Improve Photo Descriptions for Blind or Low Vision   Giving more meaningful information to photos.   https://about.fb.com/news/2021/01/using-ai-to-improve-photo-descriptions-for-blind-and-visually-impaired-people/   Blind Compass   This free iOS app emits tones for the cardinal directions. It also has a mode for locking the direction when one needs to traverse a straight route   https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/blind-compass/id1546647415   Google’s Talkback is Getting New Features    https://www.xda-developers.com/google-talkback-screen-reader-galaxy-s21/   Code Jumper Android App Now Available   Now you can learn to code on your Android device or Chromebook, besides Windows 10.   https://www.aph.org/product/code-jumper/   New Brailliant BI 20X and 40X   New Braille displays with Braille Input keyboards from Humanware, the Brailliant BI 14 still remains available. New displays use a cut down version of Keysoft to offer apps to use on the Braille Display, connect to 5 BT and 1 UsB device (fast switching).   BI 20X   https://store.humanware.com/hau/brailliant-bi-20x-braille-display.html   BI 40X   https://store.humanware.com/hau/brailliant-bi-40x-braille-display.html   Some Thoughts On my new M1 Macbook Pro with Touch Bar   On the M1 MbP, the Touch Bar replaces the Function keys. For Function key strokes, hold down FN and press 1 to 0, and dash for F11 and equals for F12. Nice physical separation between the Escape key on left and Touch ID button on right of the Touch Bar. Keyboard is as nice to type on as the M1 MacBook Air. Still same 2 USBC, and 3.5MM head phone ports. For me, no performance difference between either M1 Macs.   Interesting Tech - Strap, Wearable Device to Replace the Cane   Wearable tech to possibly replace the use of the cane, due out in Winter time in Australia, using various sensors to detect objects in front at ground, body, and head. Interesting sounding device, but with all such advancements, probably wise to use a bit of commonsense.   https://strap.tech/product.html

Shane Lowe, Community Manager at Supersense, joins Jeff Thompson and Angie Fisher in the Blind Abilities Studio. Shane gives a good description and describes the many features pact inside the Supersense App. From Automatic Smart Scanning, Object Detection, Bar Code Reading and the availability to extract and share text, use links and so much more. Join Jeff and Angie as Shane talks about how Supersense came about and how he got involved, bringing his own Blind experiences to the Supersense team. You can find Supersense on the App Store and the Google Play Store. We are also dropping another podcast with an announcement regarding another app from the Supersense team, Super Lidar! Stay Tuned. (From the App Store) Supersense is the smartest and simplest scanner app made for the blind and visually impaired users to read any text format, currency or product details from a barcode independently. With the power of AI, Supersense automatically figures out what you are trying to scan, guides you on how to point the camera, and reads the content in the right format. Its unique design minimizes the time and frustrations of scanning and reading text for a blind and visually impaired user. Full features of Supersense: - Smart Scanner: The app automatically detects whether you are trying to quickly read a piece of text, a long document, a currency or a barcode. - Smart Guidance: The app guides you on how to point the camera and finds the best angle to have the most accurate results -  Quick Read: Instantly read the text presented in front of the rear camera - Document: Read longer documents with the assistance of smart guidance. Once the text has been recognized, use VoiceOver commands to navigate through the recognized text and share it to other apps. - Multipage Scanning: Scan documents with multiple pages simultaneously and navigate through the text.  - Currency: Recognize currencies and hear the value of a banknote - Barcode: Scan barcodes to hear the name and brand of the products with additional information - Object Explorer and Find: Scan your physical environment and hear about the objects that are around. - Import: Read and explore text from the images and PDF files. Also you can send them directly from any other apps with using "Recognize with Supersense" tool in your share menu. - Read History: Displays your recognition history in a single screen. Most features work without an internet connection so that the blind or visually impaired user can use it in any situation. The app has full VoiceOver accessibility support and is available in multiple languages. Whenever you get stuck, you can always find our tutorial under Menu or request a call and we will reach you to give personal training on how to use Supersense. Today's guest is Steph Richards. Editing this episode in the wake of the New York Philharmonic's news, seemed serendipitous. During this pandemic we have all been scrambling to find a way forward, and most artists have been lost in this effort, because they have not been accustomed to swimming in the waters of change and hunger for far too long. This is obviously not the case with artists like Stephanie Richards, whose latest project, Supersense, is awe inspiring. Steph is NOT going to be caught in the wave of extinction facing many artists in the coming years. Conversations like the one you are about to hear matter, it's time to understand that the people we are propping up in this fetishistic madness, are those stuck in the structures that led to a catastrophe which Covid has only accelerated: boring programming, poor audience relations, unsound financial practices, and exorbitant salaries for administrators, music directors, and concertmasters. For those out there listening who are starting their careers, or who still have ambition, it's time to think more deeply about what it means to be an artist, and take your destiny into your own hands…the institutions won't be here for you. But for now, if Mark Swed's list constitutes the heroes of the industry…count me out, and sign me up a ticket to the first Steph Richards or Dan Rosenboom show at the earliest convenience. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

Most of us believe that we are unique and coherent individuals, but are we? The idea of a “Self” has existed ever since humans began to live in groups and become sociable. Those who embrace the self as an individual in the West, or a member of the group in the East, feel fulfilled and purposeful. This experience seems incredibly real, but a wealth of recent scientific evidence reveals that this notion of the independent, coherent self is an illusion – it is not what it seems. In this talk, Professor Bruce Hood reveals how the self emerges during childhood and how the architecture of the developing brain enables us to become social animals dependent on each other. You'll learn how the self is the product of our relationships and interactions with others, and it exists only in our brains. Prof Hood argues, however, that though the self is an illusion, it is one that humans cannot live without. Professor Bruce Hood is the Professor of Developmental Psychology in Society in the School of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol. He has been a research fellow at Cambridge University and University College London, a visiting scientist at MIT and a faculty professor at Harvard. He has been awarded an Alfred Sloan Fellowship in neuroscience, the Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Infancy Researchers, the Robert Fantz memorial award and voted to Fellowship status by the society of American Psychological Science. He is the founder of the world's largest expert speaker database Speakezee.org, and the bestselling author of ”Supersense”, ‘The Self Illusion”, and the ”Domesticated Brain.' Dr. Hood is a developmental psychologist with a long-standing interest in why people believe weird things. In "Supersense" he argues that innate cognitive structures (how we think without being taught) give people a natural tendency toward belief in the supernatural. Our intuitive sense of how the world works is often at odds with the findings of modern science. In this interview we discuss the evidence for these conclusions and their implications.
