The political turbulence of the 1960s has been well documented. and one name that appears prominently in that story is Tom Hayden.One of the founders of the Students For a Democratic Society, Hayden was also a Freedom Rider in the south, fighting for civil rights, but also became one of the leading young voices against the Vietnam War. In the historically tumultuous 1968, Hayden was among several high profile demonstrators at the notorious Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Ismail Ali earned his J.D. at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2016, after receiving his Bachelor’s in Philosophy from California State University, Fresno, in 2012. As a law student, among leading and participating in other extracurricular activities which focused primarily on human rights, civil liberties, and racial justice, he also worked for the ACLU of Northern California’s Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Project. In addition, Ismail served as co-lead of Berkeley Law’s chapter of Students for Sensible Drug Policy, where he coordinated events that helped educate the law school community about entheogens, challenge the stigma associated with psychedelic drug use, and critique the racial dynamics of the emerging cannabis industry in California. To support his work at MAPS, Ismail received Berkeley Law’s Public Interest Fellowship, a fellowship which provides funding for qualified Berkeley Law graduates who pursue legal work in the public interest. Ismail believes that psychedelic consciousness is a crucial piece of challenging oppression in all of its forms, and that legal access to psychedelics is an essential part of a progressive drug policy paradigm. Tom Hayden, currently Director of the Peace and Justice Resource Center is one of my heroes, a unique example of deep commitment to justice ,a great work ethic and an inspiring life of inner growth while continuing as an indefatigable activist. In 1962 Tom wrote “The Port Huron Statement” one of the founding documents of Students For a Democratic Society (SDS). He was a “freedom rider” in the early sixties, going to the American south to protest racial segregation and then worked for the Newark Community Union Project from 1964-68. As one of the most effective leaders against the War in Viet Nam he was one of the “Chicago Eight” indicted (and ultimately acquitted) for the anti-war protests in front of the 1968 Democratic Convention. Tom spent eighteen years in the California State Legislature as a State Senator and an Assemblyman passing over one hundred bills related to the environment and social justice. He is the author of twenty-one books most recently Listen Yanqui—Why Cuba Matters, Inspiring Participatory Democracy: Student Movements from Port Huron to Today," and The Long Sixties from 1960 to Barack Obama
