In this episode, I talk to Daniel Cameron, the Attorney General of Kentucky and the Republican candidate for governor in Kentucky's 2023 gubernatorial election. Cameron is running against incumbent Democrat Andy Beshear during a cycle in which the Libertarian Party of Kentucky is not running a candidate, making Cameron an attractive choice for Kentucky's libertarians. He explains how Beshear mismanaged the response to Covid-19 and outlines his major policy proposals, which are centered around education, the economy, and crime. He aims to close the gap for Kentucky students that was created because of the pandemic by creating additional learning opportunities and addressing attendance, as well as incentivizing teachers to remain in the profession. He seeks to eliminate the state income tax and reform welfare and other social benefits, and he wants to ensure that Kentucky is safe from criminal activity. He also states that he is in favor of the Defend the Guard movement and as a general principal believes in the 10th Amendment and states' rights over the encroachments of the federal government and is politically aligned with Kentucky senator Rand Paul and congressman Thomas Massie. Some argue that the POTUS's view on abortion doesn't matter because the President has little influence over it. This is not true. The president can use the bully pulpit to influence public opinion, curb abortion through executive orders, sign legislation, and nominate pro-life justices to the federal courts. During the recent GOP presidential debate, candidates made excuses for their unwillingness to act on abortion by stating that the issue is now in the hands of the states to decide. This is a cop-out! The fact is the US Constitution already protects preborn children. The 14th Amendment reads: No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. States have recognized pre-born children as "persons" at all stages of pregnancy. Protection for preborn children was rooted in British Common Law. The authors of the amendment included the preborn as persons.
