In the NIV of Hosea 1:2, the prophet is told to “marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her.” The Hebrew wording arguably intends the idea, “and adopt her [already born] children.” The larger concern is less with marriage than with household. King is Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Spurgeon College, and co-director of Every Voice: A Center for Kingdom Diversity in Christian Theological Education. In addition to other things he has published Social Identity and the Book of Amos and he is currently writing a commentary on Hosea in the Pillar Old Testament Commentary series (Eerdmans, forthcoming).

Does Anything Really Threaten the Faith? Does anything we face really threaten the Gospel? The answer is no, according to today's Inside Out guest, Dr. John Mark Yeats. The Gospel is stronger than we give it credit for. Jesus told us that He would build His Church and not even the gates of Hell will prevail against it (Matthew 16:17-19), so nothing we think of as a threat will defeat it. Yeats is the Vice President of Student Services and Professor of Church History at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Spurgeon College in Kansas City, Missouri. “Over all of these 2,000 years since Jesus walked on the earth and died and rose again, victor over death, nothing has unseated Him as Lord,” he says. But when we focus on fighting what we think of as threats, and can leave undone the work God's given us: to tell others about Him. “We can build a bunker mentality that gets to a place where we start to move off-mission because we're more concerned about protecting what we have,” he says. Join us for today's 16-minute podcast. You can read “What is the Greatest Threat to the Gospel,” the Lifeway Research article that inspired the conversation. Find it here. JC, Brian, and Nate sit down for a conversation today with Jared Wilson. Jared C. Wilson is Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry at Spurgeon College, Author in Residence at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, General Editor of For The Church (and host of the FTC Podcast), and Director of The Pastoral Training Center at Liberty Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO. He also co-hosts The Art of Pastoring Podcast hosted by Christianity Today.Jared is not a catalytic "agent of change" or a visionary anything. He is a failed church planter and once made a mess of his marriage. He likes food too much and worries way too much about what people think, and he's definitely not all that he's cracked up to be. After 25 years of ministry, he's mainly learned that he's kind of a nincompoop. But he knows Jesus loves him.
IntroductionIn this episode of The Greater Heritage podcast we review The Gospel According to Satan: Eight Lies about God that Sound Like the Truth. It is a Jared Wilson book published by Thomas Nelson.Apologetics is one of my favorite branches of theology. If you've listed to our podcast before, that's probably not a surprise to you. The Gospel According to Satan is an excellent book on the subject, particularly as it clarifies many things that sound right about Christianity, but are actually completely un-Biblical lies perpetuated by Satan. It manages to teach doctrine without confusing readers too. It is also filled with practical pastoral tips as it gets to the heart of some of the most pressing questions facing contemporary man.Jared Wilson Book Review (The Gospel According to Satan)Jared Wilson's book looks at how Satan deceives and distorts gospel truths through lies that sound appealing. As he puts it, Satan does not want us to think thoughts about God at all. However, if we do the next best thing is for him to get us thinking wrong thoughts about God.From this jumping off point, Wilson teaches readers how to focus on what God really said, instead of what the devil tries to make us think He said (a strategy that Adam and Eve fell prey to in the Garden of Eden).Throughout the book, he explores 8 different lies of Satan that sound true, but are not.For example, God Just Wants You to Be Happy, You Need to Live Your Truth, Your Feelings Are Reality, You Need to Let Go and Let God and more.Along the way, issues such as antinomianism, legalism and relativism present themselves in a easy to understand manner.Wilson also gives readers a healthy dose of theological history, including a discussion about the Keswick movement for example. My biggest personal takeaways were the book's emphasis on God's desiring of our holiness over our happiness, and how pain, even when we don't understand it, has meaning. In addition, his pastoral anecdotes, introspection and keen knowledge of contemporary issues add credibility and really resonated with me.ConclusionOverall, The Gospel According to Satan is a readable, practical, current, and doctrinally clarifying book that I recommend to all readers, especially those with questions about Christianity.Intro and outro music provided by Five Minute Plan. Follow Dr Allen on Twitter here https://twitter.com/jasonkeithallen Buy Letters to My Students: Volume 1: On Preaching here Few books have more influenced those called to gospel ministry than Charles Spurgeon’s Lectures to My Students. This influence of this book, like the Prince of Preachers himself, reverberates to our present age. Carrying forward this tradition is Jason Allen’s Letters to My Students. Dr. Allen serves as president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Spurgeon College, the former ranking as one of the largest and fastest growing seminaries in North America. Dr. Allen has also served in multiple pastorates. His passion to serve the church by equipping a generation of pastors, missionaries, and ministers for faithful service is reflected in Letters to My Students. Letters to My Students is a biblical, accessible guide for ministers and ministers-in-training. It brings both biblical and practical wisdom to bear on the minister’s three main responsibilities: preaching, leading, and shepherding the flock of God. Martin Lloyd-Jones famously described the call to ministry as the highest, greatest, and most glorious calling to which one can be called. If this assessment resonates with you, you’ll want every available tool to strengthen your ministry. Letters to My Students is one such resource.

What does the book of Jonah want readers to think and do? Beyond the history and apologetics involved, many readers are unaware of the important literary cues in Jonah. Sam Bierig, Dean of Spurgeon College at Midwestern Seminary, has been studying, writing, and preaching Jonah and wants Christians to hear the cues and see the book as it is. What's more, he wants college students to focus on souls and Scripture as they learn and train for the Kingdom.Find featured resources at exegeticaltools.com and follow ET at @exegeticaltoolsLearn more about Spurgeon College at spurgeoncollege.com
In today's episode we have Jared Wilson giving us a spectacular episode on Gospel Centrality within our preaching. Jared is the Director of Content Strategy for Midwestern Seminary, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Ministry at Spurgeon College, Director of the Pastoral Training Center at Liberty Baptist Church, and author of numerous books, including Gospel Wakefulness, The Pastor’s Justification, The Prodigal Church, The Imperfect Disciple, Supernatural Power for Everyday People, and The Gospel-Driven Church. A frequent preacher and speaker at churches and conferences, you can visit him online at jaredcwilson.com I'm not going to lie to you. I knew I wanted Jared on the podcast because behind Dr. Timothy Keller he is, in my mind, the greatest Gospel Centered thinker and writer I see in our day and age. This brother is absolutely obsessed with the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I can pay no greater compliment. He has had a profound influence on me and I can't thank God enough for what helping the Body of Christ grow in Gospel Centrality. I knew I had to get him on the podcast because the greatest deficit I continually see in too many preachers' is the lack of The Gospel in the sermon. Folks forget Jesus and what He's done in The Cross and Resurrection and that's a problem. This is a light hearted but helpful sermon on preaching with The Gospel as the center of your sermon.

Note to my Students: For those who are younger listeners, the english is a bit old and traditional language used in the 1800s. Despite the language, this is a message I'd really like you to hear. If you are able to be patient with it, listen carefully and skim over the words that you don't really understand. The message is still very clear if we are able to listen for it. I hope you are challenged by it today as I find it timely and very valuable and relevant for us even today. ----------------- Today's Message is an excerpt from a Christmas Sermon by Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon titled "A Christmas Question". Charles Spurgeon was the Pastor of New Park Street Chapel (later known as Metropolitan Tablernacle) in London, England between 1854-1892. He is today regarded as one of the most influential and revered preachers of the modern history. He was the founder of Spurgeon College which was named after him posthumously. The message excerpt today is taken from the New Park Street Pulpit Volume 6, and delivered on December 25, 1859. ------------------- Music by: AShamaluevMusic – “Family Christmas (https://www.patreon.com/ashamaluevmusic) Peter Thompson – Devotional Tracks – “02” (www.ourworshipsound.com)
