Howie Klein has been my regular Thursday guest for over a dozen years now, but our friendship goes back further to the early 90s, when I was doing rock radio in Los Angeles and he was president of Reprise Records. When Howie left Reprise and Warner Brothers as Time Warner and AOL merged, he began devoting all of his time to progressive politics, launching Down with Tyranny and the Blue America PAC.Danny Goldberg also worked in the music industry as a personal manager, record company president, public relations man and journalist since the late 1960s. When Howie and I first met, Danny managed Nirvana, Hole, Sonic Youth, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, Rickie Lee Jones and more. From 2005-2006, Danny was CEO of Air America Radio. That was a few years before I joined the network and hosted a nightly show there. All three of us share the common experience of working in the music industry and being very involved in progressive politics. Today, we're all dealing with our current political situation as best we can. Admittedly, I am not handling it well. Two weeks ago on the show, Howie mentioned that he had dinner with his dear old friend Danny Goldberg, and told me that Danny had some very important and insightful thoughts on surviving these dark days and fighting back, and suggested we have Danny join us on the show. So he is doing that today. They'll be here for the second half-hour.Tonight, Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez will be in my neck of the woods. They're heading out west as part of Bernie's Fighting Oligarchy tour. I will be there and will bring you coverage tomorrow and Monday. They're leading the way of the resistance, but it's up to all of us. At the top of the show, I'll share some more constructive ways we can and are fighting back. It's all in our hands right now...

In this episode we're joined by music-biz legend Danny Goldberg to discuss his dealings with Led Zeppelin and Kurt Cobain — and the school days he spent with the great Gil Scott-Heron. Danny takes us back to his short-lived stint at Berkeley and his first port of call on returning to his native New York: clerking at trade bible Billboard, a job that led to the publication of his report on 1969's Woodstock festival. From there we jump to the three years our guest spent working for Led Zep — first as their press agent, then as V-P of their label Swan Song. We revisit the band's conquest and domination of '70s America and hear hair-raising tales of Page, Plant, Bonzo, Peter Grant and Richard Cole... as well as Danny's 1976 exit from the band's dark vortex. The story of how Nirvana came to be managed by Danny's company Gold Mountain prompts thoughts on Kurt Cobain and mention of the 2019 memoir (Serving the Servant) our guest wrote about him. Danny brings his management and record-label story up to date by previewing the new album by his clients the Waterboys. The week's new audio interview takes us back to the '60s and to Danny's reminiscences of the young Gil Scott-Heron, who can be heard talking in 1978 to Mark "Radio Pete" Bliesener. The second of two clips — about Richard Nixon — brings us to the shocking present moment of Donald Trump's and Elon Musk's unprecedented assault on American democracy. After a tribute to the departed Marianne Faithfull — heard talking about the brilliant Broken English album in a short audio clip from 2014 — Jasper quotes from a 2023 Simon Reynolds article about A.I. and music journalism. Pieces discussed: Woodstock: Peace Mecca, Led Zeppelin: Under The Hood – A Backstage Chronicle of the Historic 1975 Tour, Led Zeppelin: Danny Goldberg's Hideaway, Danny Goldberg: Serving the Servant – Remembering Kurt Cobain (Ecco), Gil Scott-Heron audio (1978), Growing Up With Gil Scott-Heron: In Loving Memory, Marianne Faithfull audio (2014) and I'm a Noted Music Critic. EPISODE 121: Says former chairman and CEO of Mercury Records, Danny Goldberg in his book Bumping into Geniuses, Bloom's “interest in rock and roll had more to do with the study of mass psychology in action than furthering the aggrandizement of spoiled rock stars. He approached PR as an applied science.” In fact, Bloom used his science to invent simple correlational techniques and no-cost market research tools.  He joined the resulting data to what he calls “tuned empathy” and “saturated intuition” to help build or sustain the careers of figures like Michael Jackson, Prince, Bob Marley, Bette Midler, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Billy Idol, Peter Gabriel, David Byrne, John Mellencamp, Joan Jett, Queen, Kiss, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Kool and the Gang, Chaka Khan, Run DMC, and roughly 100 others.  He contributed to the success of films like The Great Gatsby, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Outrageous Fortune, and Purple Rain.   In the process, he helped generate $28 billion in revenues (more than the gross domestic product of Oman or Luxembourg) for companies like Sony, Disney, Pepsi Cola, Coca Cola, and Warner Brothers.  And he did it by focusing not on profits but on soul.  The result?  Sterling Whitaker, author of The Grand Delusion: The Unauthorized True Story of Styx, calls Bloom, “probably the greatest press agent that rock and roll has ever known.” howardbloom.net/about-howard-bloom/Contact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Because they make perfect sense and they were designed by a conscious being. Right? But the thing is, even the people that are teaching them aren't conscious about that level of it, most of them. Now I felt that I was born a Jew for some reason and I am wanting to find out why. But every time I get near people who would like to tell me why, the vibration of the reason they want to tell me somehow turns me off. It's often that a Jewish Rabbi will come along and want to get me to recognize my Judaism but their desire is not pure – there is something in them, what it is I don't know…” – Ram Dass, Berkley Comm.

Oh, you better believe it. Steve Greenberg is here on the podcast today. Steve signed Hanson after checking them out at a local county fair- there would be no Hanson as we know them if not for Steve. A former rep for Mercury Records, Steve now has his own label- S-Curve Records. Steve brings an hour of fun, laughs, enthusiasm and passion into this episode, his love for Hanson and the Middle of Nowhere era is undeniably contagious. Tone Deaf:" Steve Greenberg, the executive producer on Hanson's album Middle of Nowhere, was convinced that if the band were to fulfil the potential that Christopher Sabec, the band's manager, first saw in them at SXSW, they'd need to have alt-cred. “We were coming out of this alternative rock moment, and everything was about alternative cred. People were very skeptical that we could do a pop record,” Greenberg recently told Broadly, who've published an oral history on ‘MMMBop'. Greenberg decided to assemble an alternative Justice League to spruce up the band's indie credentials. Having recently heard an advance of Beck's Odelay, Greenberg tapped the Dust Brothers to produce Middle of Nowhere. “It was the Dust Brothers' involvement that helped us achieve alternative cred,” said Greenberg. David Campbell, a composer who'd worked with Green Day and Hole, did arrangements for the album, and Tamra Davis (Sonic Youth, Veruca Salt) directed the ‘MMMBop' video. “Steve and I wanted to create a patina of hipness around a pop record. I think we picked exactly the right people,” said Mercury Records' Danny Goldberg. “They didn't try to make it like Nine Inch Nails or too hip. But they did add a hipness factor that smoothed the pathway to quick exposure in all aspects of the business.” More about Steve's Podcast: American Song Writer- " Grammy-Award winning Record Executive and Producer Steve Greenberg — the veteran music industry producer who helped launch the careers of Hanson, The Jonas Brothers, Joss Stone, Andy Grammer, AJR and many more — announced today the debut of “Speed of Sound.” The new iHeartRadio Original podcast explores how some of pop's biggest songs, bands and musical genres soared to the top of the charts. From The Beatles to disco, “The Twist” to hip-hop and beyond, Greenberg examines the unique historical circumstances, technological advances and trends that helped create some of music's most remarkable and unlikely success stories."

His love for mixed martial arts led him to found Golden Gear, a high-end boxing equipment company, in 2009. Danny sold the company in 2015. Podcaster Joe Rogan uses, loves, and promotes a business that Danny helped co-found, Diamond MMA. In 2015, Danny founded MAG Sourcing and built it into a 7-figure manufacturing agency that helps consumer brands manufacture overseas.   Danny's perspective on life has been shaped by a series of unfortunate events. When he was 20 years old, Danny lost his dad to cancer. Five years later, he lost his mom to cancer as well. Danny says that the loss, while absolutely terrible, has taught him many things about how to live a life worth living. The biggest lesson he learned is that there are no guarantees. We can't control how much time we have on this earth, but we can control how and where we spend our limited time.   Understanding that, Danny chooses to live with intention and purpose in all he does. Danny's mission is to help others harness their life and to help them commit to building a purpose-driven life, which he does through Keynote Speaking and the Bits of Gold podcast. Their infamous feud reached a boiling point at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, but what were the events that led to that nasty, now-mythic showdown between two of rock's most iconic frontmen? We'll also examine how Nirvana's grunge touchstone Nevermind transformed MTV and top 40 radio, the complicated legacy of GN'R's nine-minute power-ballad opus “November Rain,” and why Axl ended up ditching women for dolphins. Retired Judge John Fogleman shared a historically significant story with our club about the greatest maritime disaster in US History. We were surprised to learn that this disaster did not occur off our East (Atlantic) or West Coast (Pacific). It happened just off the shores of Arkansas on the Mighty Mississippi River about seven miles North of what is now downtown Memphis. Judge Fogleman sat down with us to share the whole story of the Sultana disaster, which took place in April of 1865, only a few weeks after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
