Thursday, January 23, 2020, 12 noon WPKN 89.5 FM www.wpkn.org Host: Duo Dickinson This week Home Page Radio Takes On THE KITCHEN. After World War 2, June Cleaver got a perm, did her makeup, put on an apron, and you did not see her until dinner. We made homes that isolated the cook to a room behind walls, with stacked boxes of cabinets and appliances, no place to sit unless it was the table we ate every day and the those who did not cook socialized in another place. But 200 Years ago, every home that was not made for those who had staff centered around the hearth, and the hearth was the kitchen. In the Little Ice Age of that time, things were colder, there was less freshly harvested food, so more time was spent by everyone around the fire and in the kitchen. Together. Something happened about 150 years ago: The way we heated and the way we cooked became separate things. We had central plumbing. We began to have separate rooms to cook all year round: not just a “Summer Kitchen” for when the heat of baking/roasting/stewing was unwelcome (unlike the winter). Now the universe of home living has come full circle: for two generations the Kitchen has come back home. We are now all around the hearth again, its just that the hearth is now the most expensive, the most used and the most social place in most homes. So home page talks to those who Really know kitchens in 2020, from several different places. Christine F. Ingraham, co-created Fletcher Cameron Design, received her degrees from Cranbrook Academy of Art and Yale University, and has dedicated much of her time designing custom kitchens for over 25 years. Denise Appel – the Chef of Zinc Restaurant in New Haven: and a homeowner who (tries) to cook (and paint) at home. How is that working out? We also talk to Eva Geertz, who helps run The Institute Library, and her family, and is an extraordinary Cook-In-Charge who not only makes, but remakes the foods she creates. This will be an hour of finding out why this place is the The Place, so near and dear to most homes.

Peter Rukavina's Podcast

Summer Kitchen is a new restaurant in Charlottetown that’s moved into the space occupied for decades previous by the venerable Noodle House, which moved downtown recently. The building has received a long-deserved clean-up and renovation; the pervasive pink has been expunged, and replaced by shades of red. The place has never looked better. Oliver and I stopped in for lunch mid-afternoon yesterday. There being no vegetarian options evident on the menu, we asked our server for recommendations; she called the chef out to speak with us, and we took him up on his suggestion of spicy eggplant and tofu over rice. The result was very good; indeed it may have been the first palatable version of eggplant I’ve ever been served. They’re starting off slowly at Summer Kitchen, waiting for additional staff to arrive before they step on the accelerator. Now might be the best time for you to stop in for a meal, before it gets really popular, as I’m sure it will. Open every day except Tuesday. Our bill was $16 for two, which included a plate of vegetarian spring rolls to start.

It has officially begun. That seasonal shift from summer to fall that we all know so well. The air around here has started to feel a bit cooler at night and we've spotted the fleets of big yellow buses out on the road again-back to picking up their charges for another year of academia. In the kitchen, we have been busily preparing, tasting, and testing all sorts of new recipes. Just recently, we had the pleasure of partnering up with High Plains Bison and creating some great, new, very healthy dishes. Bison meat is exceptionally low in fat content and cholesterol, but still really great tasting. After we put the videos together, the entire office was hooked, and most of us tried them out all over again in our own kitchens. Check out the videos on our Summer Kitchen site, if you're looking for an easy and delicious new recipe that's a little different...hmmmm, maybe to serve at that Labor Day bbq coming up in, oh, 3 days...?Try the kabobs-trust us, they're amazing. Not to mention simple. Served over a tasty cous-cous salad, these kabobs take no time at all to prepare. You can make enough cous cous to feed an army in a matter of minutes! And the marinade for the kabobs is one of the best we've come up with-collaborating with the High Plains chef was a great learning experience for us! In case you need any more friendly nudges, we decided to go a step further and simply post the video for you below:Enjoy and happy grilling from the foodies at Handmade Kitchens!ps-enjoy this last glimpse of summer:The Handmade Van, arriving soon to a beach near you!
