Global diplomacy resembles nothing more than some geopolitical Area 52 – an absurd landscape full of rumours, secrets, conspiracies, and various unreal things. Is this strategy of the absurd… or strategic stalling? Let's get into it.The big Paris headline sounded impressive: French President Emmanuel Macron said twenty-six nations had pledged to provide post-war security guarantees to Ukraine, including an international force on land, at sea, and in the air. But there's one crucial detail that needs to be called out: post-war. The (theoretical) force deploys only “the day after the conflict stops.” (Reuters)The Associated Press spelled it out: “26 of Ukraine's allies have pledged to deploy troops as a ‘reassurance force'… once fighting ends.” (AP, Sept. 4, 2025). Note the use of the phrase reassurance, rather than deterrence. It sounds non-committal and non-specific. Who is it reassuring, Western electorates and politicians themselves? Probably not the Ukrainians who have been hardened by Western weakness, betrayal and hypocrisy over the last two decades. Edition No241 | 04-09-2025 - This summer Putin expected thunder and damnation, the smiting of Ukrainian forces and major advances on the frontlines in all directions. What he got and mud and blood, twisted armour and incremental gains in some places, and humiliating retreats in others. Ukraine of course has eyes on a maximalist prize, the recovery of all its sovereign land and people, but at a minimum, it can count as a success just holding the invaders at bay for another year, fighting them to a standstill and exacting a huge price in bodies and treasure. For Putin it's different. Whereas his maximalist aims might be delusional, his minimum success, to satisfy the baying Z-Patriot mob and propagandists, is so much more than his armies managed to achieve. Russia launched big fighting talk and bigger bombardments from Sumy to Pokrovsk, sought kilometres of gains, but ran into a wall of Ukrainian resilience. Modern warfare does not favour manoeuvre, with drones to observe, ambush, drop ordnance and undertake kamikaze strikes. A transparent battlefield where forces are massing means a target rich environment is massing. This is partly why Russia's summer offensives have failed to meet their strategic objectives; how both sides can still plausibly claim to have momentum dominance; why 2025 is shaping up as stasis on the ground that favours Ukraine, and disfavours Russia. Picture this: debris from a Ukrainian drone — falling like an uninvited and unwelcome weekend guest at a dacha — ignites a forest inferno just six miles from Putin's alleged $1.5 billion bolt hole, his Black Sea palace. Was it a deliberate power move by Ukraine, were they aiming for the palace itself, or is this just collateral damage? Likely the former. Russia last night launched the second-largest mass strike of the war, according to multiple outlets, hitting homes and — pointedly, deliberately — sites tied to Europe and the UK. The British Council's building is smashed beyond use. The EU delegation compound is damaged. The EU building is classed as a diplomatic site, and thus an extensive of European sovereign territory and the British Council is an important extension of the British government abroad. Make not mistake, these are a direct challenge, attacks on the UK and EU, their property, power, influence and authority. More importantly, children are dead, and huge numbers of Ukrainians killed. At the same time Peskov and other criminals warble on about being interested about peace. At this point, who should we be angrier at, Moscow for behaving in exactly the way we expect them to, or at our leaders for not taking decisive action, and the media for reprinting the drivel that comes from Moscow, often without appropriate context. That being, Russia always lies. So many headlines blare out, Moscow's actions sabotage the peace process, but that is to fall for the con, and to indirectly support Moscow and the appeasement of its actions. The truth is, there is no peace process to sabotage. Why is the US still at the heart of the so-called peace process? Why are the Europeans deferring to Trump, spending so much time on coddling his ego and pandering to his ignorance, and waiting for some kind of consensus on the way forward, when it's the Europeans that are now fully funding Ukraine's defence, and at higher monetary level than when the US was last engaged with the conflict, under Biden? Trump has been wrong on everything. His supposed efforts to implement peace have been a roller-coaster of delusion and distraction. Europe has been endlessly deflected from focusing on the real problem, pushing back against Russia aggression, that shows no signs of stopping, unless it is physically stopped. Russia has a strategic problem: the main processing capacities are concentrated in the Western part of the country, while fuel consumption is rising in the Far East. Fuel logistics span thousands of kilometres, and now Kilometre-long queues in Primorye are forming of consumers and businesses needing to purchase fuel. Large refineries – from Kirishi to Volgograd – are within reach of Ukrainian drones. Fuel trains are being filmed, set alight by Ukrainian drones, such as the 'derailed' Russian fuel train in Zaporizhzhia. Local media reported that Ukrainian drones struck a Russian fuel train in the Donetsk region, causing nine of the train cars to catch on fire. The drone footage was stunning and compulsive viewing. The Flamingo missile threatens facilities previously considered out of reach. Putin has a problem. His elite are getting worried – and this concern is being mirrored in the US, nominally an ally of Ukraine, but the anger and anxiety of Trump are telling – many in the US administration don't want to see Russia defeated. In that position, China and the US are aligned on outcomes. Last night, in the stillness before dawn, Russia hurled hundreds of drones and dozens of projectiles across Ukraine, and hit an American-owned electronics plant in Mukachevo, far in the country's west, near the EU border. Inside were hundreds of workers sheltering in place. By morning, the factory—owned by Texas-rooted, Singapore-registered Flex—was ablaze. This is an extraordinary act of aggression against US interests and investments. It's an attack on Europe too, and the concept of European security. What we are seeing is the culmination of months of theatre, where expectations were toyed with, the notion of peace was teased, abused, manipulated and distorted. Now we see all these things coming together, but no real prospect of peace. No process done in good faith that could lead to negotiated peace as an outcome. Putin does not deal with any country in good faith unless they show extraordinary strength – and of a particular authoritarian bullying kind. In any case, Russia only places faith in an agreement while it benefits from the scenario. As soon as it is not beneficial, all treaties are contingent, broken and rejected, the terms flouted. So it will be here, but Putin is not dealing with people (like Trump) whom he sees as strong or a threat.As James Sherr incisively comment today, “To paraphrase a Russian expression, against whom are you waging peace?” He also notes that every ultimatum from Trump is a prelude to a step change in reverse. He dangles all sorts of possibilities with allies and in the face of adversaries, only to drop them at a moment's notice when the reverse gear step change is required. Secondly, Witkoff is not an emissary of peace – he is the herald and harbinger of treachery. Trump did not send him to Moscow to negotiate peace, in face to negotiate anything, but to acquiesce to a betrayal. And this is what is now unfolding. Betrayal of Ukraine, betrayal of allies, betrayal of the principles of law, justice and fairness. The White House says that no date has been decided yet on the much-hyped last-minute Putin-Trump summit. Remember today is last date Trump set to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine. That deadline has blown past, apparently with no consequences whatsoever for the criminal in the Kremlin. In today's episode we examine the grim and urgent reality: the delusions of a negotiated peace, and the collapse of diplomacy into spectacle, farce even, covering Putin's maximalist war aims without accountability, stolen children, oil black markets, and a world where every handshake is transactional and every value is negotiable. The world of Trump, where there seem to be no consequences for terrible behaviour. We will navigate this moral abyss.Have you noticed how Putin managed to wriggle out of this deadline yet again? Trump's latest and ultimate ‘ultimatum' seems to have been handled using the same trick, the same sleight of hand as the previous awkward situations for Putin. And here we are three months later, and the same trick is being used to achieve the same effect.
