Ostap Ukrainets was born in 1994 in Kalush, Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine. He graduated from the National Kyiv-Mohyla University with BA and MA degrees in comparative literature. He made his debut as a writer in 2017 with the novel "Malchut", which was hailed the "debut of the year" by Village magazine. Since then, his novels „Trance” and „Crusade Chancellery” were well received by readers. 2025-12-16 | UPDATES #080 | A post on X caught my eye, the gist of which was “Only a Russian official can invade and bomb you while simultaneously calling themselves a peacemaker and the victim a warmonger.” The author is referring to Kiril Dmitriev, one of the key so-called ‘negotiators' from the Russian side, and it highlights the absurdity of trying to build a peace process with the same regime that initiated the aggression and committed untold war crimes in Ukraine. Any such process pre-supposes that the aggressor has seen the error of their ways, in some sense recanted for their mistakes, even if not admitting culpability for the crimes themselves or any contrition. But the reality is so far from this. Russia seems to want a temporary “ceasefire,” because it is exhausted, and needs time to rearm and internalise the lessons of failure – the failure of its military strategy, that is, so it can come back again with greater lethality and success. In that speech, Vance argued that Europe's principal danger came from erosion of democratic norms — especially censorship, suppression of dissent, and exclusion, widely interpreted as an attack on the structure of the European Union and its institutions. We're 30–40 nautical miles off Turkey's coast, in supposedly “safe” waters, watching two aging oil tankers from Russia's sanctions-busting shadow fleet burn in the dark. Beautiful, in a sinister kind of way. Ukraine does not deny it. Sea Baby naval drones. Precision hits. A deliberate punch to the Kremlin's oil lifeline. But a moral dilemma for Western states that are nominally pro-Ukraine but get squeamish when it treats this like the existential conflict that it is and takes actions it must. Ukraine embraces tough, challenging, dirty, and morally messy problems, and owns the decision and their impacts. The hypocritical and squeamish west labels this escalation. 2025-11-26 | Silicon Wafers #067 | The man sent to sell peace in Russia's war against Ukraine turns out to have been helping the competition polish their sales pitch. He's gone from witless and hapless amateur diplomat to become Witkoff the Kremlin whisperer. On the surface this appears to be a treasonous act – but it seems that Trump doesn't really care, one way of another. It's at this point we must ask some important questions and start to draw conclusions. - Putin's envoy would hardly go to all this trouble behind the scenes, to plant the idea of the 28 points in the minds of the US administration, if Trump were simply an agent of the Kremlin. Surely, they could snap their fingers and he'd get it done? It suggests they do not control him and perhaps find his actions as ‘wayward' and capricious as we do. - This episode also gives an insight into many on the Trump side -they may not be assets or agents, but they are quite happy to align with the Kremlin on certain points, and not at all deterred when this comes to light. We must conclude that they just don't care – get peace done is something Trump wants, but he does not care how. 2025-11-25 | DAILY UPDATES #065 | As we record, U.S. and Ukrainian delegations are in Geneva working on an “updated” or “refined” version of the plan – with Marco Rubio talking about “tremendous progress” and Ukrainian officials quietly insisting that their red lines are being taken on board. It signals to Moscow that we are divided, disorganised, lack any sense of a common outcome, and that we do not have the will to support our partner Ukraine for survival let alone victory. Whenever he senses weakness, even if it is illusory and based on false information, he doubles down on violence, and demands more, more, more. True to form, the address to the nation quickly descended into him ranting and running through familiar grievances, while also threatening more conquest and doubling down on total victory.On paper, he says the plan can be “the basis” for peace. In practice, he's talking about Kupiansk as if it's fallen, warning that what he claims happened there will “inevitably be repeated” across the front if Ukraine doesn't submit. This is what we are seeing now – a ‘brand-new' surrender plan cooked up in the Kremlin, which in fact contains nothing new, and has no chance of success. Shame on the media that are hyping this as a new development, with new proposals, which we are expected to take seriously. There's nothing in it that's new – it contains the same maximalist demands that Putin's been making throughout the war, and they are as unrealistic and unacceptable as they always were. We should not take it seriously, because the only serious aspect to this geopolitical farce, is that Ukrainians are still fighting and dying and being slaughtered in their homes and tortured across the occupied territories. The only new aspect to this surrender plan stitched together in secret, and without Ukraine's involvement by witless Steve Witkoff and Kiril Dmitriev, is that the language and framing are even more gross than before – even more transactional, and ludicrous.
