In Monongalia County, Mylan Park draws anywhere between 800,000 and 900,000 people a year to sporting events. Ron Justice, president of the Mylan Park Foundation, also emphasized the local economic benefits, citing job creation and increased spending in restaurants and hotels. On a similar path, Summersville is planning a large outdoor sports complex. And Charleston is preparing for a new indoor sports complex, which will transform part of the Charleston Town Center Mall.  “Sports tourism nationally is recession-proof. Families will always travel for their kids to play travel sports,” said Tim Brady, president and CEO of the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau. With help from the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, she was able to grow her business from online to a brick and mortar establishment. She's growing native plants with the goal of protecting the state's native wildlife.  Bergstrom's yard is one of the 400 that have been certified by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resource's as a Wild Yard over the program's 25-year history. The program aims to help the state's wildlife by encouraging property owners to grow native plants and incorporate animal habitats.  The state's Wild Yards program is similar to a number of programs around the country that encourage planting native plants for wildlife, coordinator Michelle Fonda said. West Virginia's program is free to be certified. Certified lawns get signs letting neighbors know of their participation in the program.  “You can get started pretty easily by planting a few native wildflowers like milkweed, goldenrod, an oak tree,” said Fonda. Shafer says more is coming to the Complex's 128 acres, including a baseball/softball complex, basketball, pickleball and dog park. Festivities take place April 5-6 at the glass factory in Milton. This year's theme celebrates the Year of New Space Age Design with the Lift Off Decanter. Invoking classic mid century motifs, the crystal decanter with a straight optic calls to mind the lift-off cloud from the cheekily nostalgic rocket stopper. Collectors can choose from ruby or cobalt. The entrepreneurship ecosystem team asked the Marshall County commission to help fund the “Entrepreneurship Resource Network Program.” This is a pilot program for the state and will last 3 years. “We are designed to help early-stage entrepreneurs all the way through people who might be interested in scaling their business, staying connected with county resources that can help them,” said Carrie White, co-founder, entrepreneur ecosystem expert. The program's goal is to increase opportunities by 50 percent, increase new business by at least six, and bring at least 12 new jobs. If the program's $100,000 funding gets approved by the commission, it will begin in August. And a new event challenges motorists to navigate across WV on backroads…on today's daily304.  #1 – From WBOY-TV – A grant has enabled several state parks as well as the New River Gorge National Park to provide job opportunities for disabled high school students in West Virginia. Community Access Inc. was awarded a one-year grant by the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation to create paid employment opportunities for 10 to 15 students from select school districts at select parks.  The jobs will be awarded based on student interest and aptitude to ensure an easy transition from training to paid employment. The remains of the farming town of Gad lie at the bottom of Summersville Lake. The residents of the town had to move once the decision was made to build the dam, as the entire area would become the Summersville Lake. Traditionally, dams are named after the nearest town, which would have been Gad. Now that name would have been a little awkward, so a decision was made to name it after the town of Summersville instead! The Summersville Dam is not only the largest dam in West Virginia, it is also a part of West Virginia's newest State Park in Nicholas County. Meanwhile, Gad Dam Brewing in Summersville slyly pays tribute to the dam's origins while serving up delicious specialty coffees, craft beer and snacks. A new event is taking this idea to the extreme and is challenging drivers to cross the entire Mountain State in one day using only backroads. 24 Hours of Appalachia: Run for the Hills challenges adventurous drivers to navigate more than 600 miles of West Virginia back roads and trails in 24 hours or less. The event is put on by Backroads of Appalachia with help from the West Virginia Gambler 500. The event begins Feb. 3 in Seneca Rocks and ends in Point Pleasant, traversing the mountains of West Virginia and taking drivers past many scenic landmarks. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Children's Home Society of West Virginia.  Registration is full for February's Run for the Hills, but non-participating drivers are encouraged to run the route for fun after the event cars have been released. Mary Mattingly is an interdisciplinary artist who builds sculptural ecosystems that address human consumption and resilience, with an underlying theme of how they might play into our ability to preserve through catastrophic events. Two of her past projects — Waterpod and Swale — were barges that periodically docked in certain areas of New York City. Both depended on a level of nomadism and self-sufficiency. She describes Waterpod as a self-sufficient living space on the water that was a shelter, grew its own food, cleaned its own water and was also a space where she could make artwork. Swale came next. It was an edible landscape and it applied many of the skills she'd learned from Waterpod. Things like navigating a large vessel though city waterways and how foraging for fresh foods could work in a city with so many rules and regulations.  Her artwork always comes from a personal place. In 2008, after numerous surgeries and trips to the hospital, she was diagnosed with Celiac disease. It was a painful journey. For so long, she didn't know what was wrong with her. So, the diagnosis was a relief. She finally had a word to attach to what she was experiencing. That's when she became interested in food. Specifically, she became aware of the inaccessibility to fresh foods — how expensive they are and how many rules and regulations prohibit people from growing their own food in public spaces. At one point, she learned about how a community garden had been shut down due to a real estate development. That was when she realized that spaces like that weren't protected and could be easily taken away. Her interest in the idea of consumption and resilience goes back to her childhood, when she didn't always have the things she wanted. She was born in Rockville, Connecticut, but she grew up in Summersville. Both are small towns that are close to nature. She tells this story about how, when she was a kid, she and her siblings would make a game out of running as fast as they could to reach a neighbor's barn before he let off a warning shot. So, when she moved to New York City, where manmade structures dominate the landscape and overconsumption is common, she began to think about how that affects us, how being so reliant on outside inputs can deprive us of our independence. The sheer scale of the trash cycle in New York City, for example, devastated her. Three nights a week, she would see trash piled up on the sidewalks, sometimes taller than her.

On Jan. 27 the Commonwealth graduated its 137th generation of Virginia State Troopers. The 31 graduates are from every corner of the Commonwealth, and also represent six other states, as well as the countries of the Dominican Republic and Egypt. Three of the new graduates will report to individual duty assignments in Hanover/Henrico: Zackary James Lehman of Christiansburg, William Aaron Miller of Summersville, and George Fouad Zaki, whose hometown is Cairo, Egypt. A man on trial in Charleston accused of killing a police officer says he will not testify in his own defense. Law enforcement officers from across the nation were on hand for the funeral of a slain Nicholas County deputy Wednesday evening in Summersville. Governor Justice says any consideration of a special session to temporarily reduce the gasoline tax is off the table, even as prices in West Virginia cross five-dollars a gallon. The President of the state Board of Education wants a thorough review of the school safety plans for all 55 West Virginia counties. A body found in the West Fork River is identified. A Grant County man is arrested for arson connected to a mobile home fire and not all state lawmakers are on board with the Governor's idea for a temporary reduction of the state's gasoline tax. Spring Break of 2021 we took off to Summersville, WV to spend time with friends and get several lighting upgrades done to the FJ. Now I am not a wiring guru. That is not my thing. I have other things I am good at, but that is definitely not one of them. Knowingly admitting that, I have good friends who are pros at wiring and installation of electrical items. The guys at AutoTronix in WV are the guys. They love to do this kind of work and believe in doing things right the first time.
