Career Stories #2: Hidden Figures, Lasting Impact: The Story of Katherine Johnson

In today's episode of Resume Assassin's Career Stories, we're spotlighting a name that should've been in the headlines decades ago—Katherine Johnson. A brilliant mathematician, a Black woman in science long before it was “acceptable,” and the mind behind some of NASA's most historic missions, Katherine helped shape space exploration as we know it. Her calculations weren't just impressive—they were the difference between life and death for astronauts on missions like Apollo 11 and Apollo 13.We take you back to the smoky control rooms of the 1960s, where every number had to be perfect and the stakes were literally out of this world. But while astronauts were being hailed as heroes, Katherine's name stayed out of the spotlight. She worked in the background, asking the hard questions, pushing into spaces she wasn't invited, and proving again and again that excellence can't be ignored forever.Katherine's legacy is more than just numbers. It's a reminder that your impact isn't always visible right away—and that being behind the scenes doesn't mean you're not leading the mission. If you've ever felt like the hidden figure in your own story, this episode is for you.---------------Update your Resume & LinkedIn Profile:Schedule a 15-minute call with Mary: https://calendly.com/resumeassassin/meet1:1 with Mary: www.resumeassassin.comAI-Enhanced: www.resumesidekick.io---------------Connect with Mary: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mary-southern/

An interview with Jean Ryoo and Jane Margolis about Power On! A diverse group of teenage friends learn how computing can be personally and politically empowering and why all students need access to computer science education. This lively graphic novel follows a diverse group of teenage friends as they discover that computing can be fun, creative, and empowering. Taylor, Christine, Antonio, and Jon seem like typical young teens—they communicate via endless texting, they share jokes, they worry about starting high school, and they have each other's backs. But when a racially-biased artificial intelligence system causes harm in their neighborhood, they suddenly realize that tech isn't as neutral as they thought it was. But can an algorithm be racist? And what is an algorithm, anyway? In school, they decide to explore computing classes, with mixed results. One class is only about typing. The class that Christine wants to join is full, and the school counselor suggests that she take a class in “Tourism and Hospitality” instead. (Really??) But Antonio's class seems legit, Christine finds an after-school program, and they decide to teach the others what they learn. By summer vacation, all four have discovered that computing is both personally and politically empowering.Interspersed through the narrative are text boxes with computer science explainers and inspirational profiles of people of color and women in the field (including Katherine Johnson of Hidden Figures fame). Power On! is an essential read for young adults, general readers, educators, and anyone interested in the power of computing, how computing can do good or cause harm, and why addressing underrepresentation in computing needs to be a top priority. Send us a textAre our children spending too much time in the digital world and missing out on real-life experiences? What happens when we prioritize screens over face-to-face connections? These are the questions at the heart of my conversation with Katherine Martinko, author of "Childhood Unplugged: Practical Advice to Get Kids Off Screens and Find Balance.”Katherine shares her unconventional upbringing in rural Ontario—homeschooled on a remote lakefront property with no television or internet—and how it shaped her approach to raising her own children in our hyper-connected world. Her perspective offers a refreshing counterpoint to prevailing parenting trends, as she and her husband have chosen to raise their children with limited and regulated tablets, smartphones, or television. The conversation explores what Jonathan Haidt calls "the great rewiring of childhood"—that perfect storm when high-speed internet, smartphones, and social media collided with parental fears about "stranger danger", over-busy family lives and addictive devices that have social media. Katherine shares shocking statistics: children ages 8-12 now average 5.5 hours of entertainment screen time daily, while teenagers log nearly 9 hours—not including school-related tech use.We also challenge common assumptions about technology and safety. Is a smartphone-equipped but distracted child truly safer than one who's fully present and aware of their surroundings? Katherine recounts how teens without phones navigate public transit more safely because they remain vigilant about potential dangers rather than absorbed in screens. For parents feeling overwhelmed, Katherine offers practical strategies for every age group: establishing tech boundaries early with young children, implementing family "tech Sabbaths," using simpler devices for older kids, and "fixing your analog life" by creating homes rich with books, craft supplies, and opportunities for creative play. Her message is empowering: parents have the right to say no, set limits, and change course as new information emerges about technology's impact on developing brains.Ready to help your children find balance in a screen-saturated world? Listen now and discover how unplugging might be the greatest gift you can give your family.

Today on the Brett Winterble Show Brett celebrated Women's Month announcing A Symphony of Strength: Celebrating American Women From the quill-dipped hands of the Revolution to the keyboard clicks of Silicon Valley, American women have woven an indelible thread into the fabric of our nation. March, Women's History Month, isn't just a nod to the past; it's a vibrant celebration of the present and a bold stride toward the future, a symphony of strength played by generations of pioneering women. Even in the nation’s infancy, women were more than silent partners. Think of Abigail Adams, whose letters to her husband John were a masterclass in political philosophy, demanding, “Remember the ladies.” While not holding formal office, she shaped the discourse and demanded inclusion. As the frontier expanded, women like Sacagawea guided expeditions, their knowledge and resilience paving the way for westward expansion. As industry boomed, women like Madam C.J. Walker, a self-made millionaire, revolutionized the beauty industry, building an empire and empowering countless others. The 20th century roared with the voices of women refusing to be silenced. From Amelia Earhart, soaring across the Atlantic, defying gravity and societal expectations, to Katherine Johnson, whose calculations propelled astronauts into space, their contributions were astronomical. Women shattered glass ceilings in every field, from medicine and law to arts and sciences. In the business world, women have always been innovators. Estée Lauder, with her simple creams and unwavering vision, built a cosmetics empire that defined an era. Mary Kay Ash, with her "golden rule" philosophy, created a direct sales giant, empowering women to achieve financial independence. And today, women like Sara Blakely, with her revolutionary Spanx, demonstrate that entrepreneurial spirit knows no gender. Their words echo with timeless wisdom:"The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any." - Alice Walker"You must do the things you think you cannot do." - Eleanor Roosevelt"The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me." - Ayn Rand“Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t know. That can be your greatest strength and ensure that you do things differently from everyone else.” - Sara Blakely "If you're offered a seat on a rocket ship, don't ask what seat! Just get on." - Sheryl SandbergTo the girls of today, the future architects of our nation, take these words to heart. Embrace your curiosity, cultivate your resilience, and never underestimate your potential. Dare to dream big, to challenge the status quo, and to forge your own path. Find mentors who inspire you, build a network of support, and never stop learning. Your voice matters, your ideas are valuable, and your contributions are essential. This Women's History Month, let us celebrate the legacy of those who came before us, and let us empower the women of today to create a future where every girl has the opportunity to shine. 1961.

And we are all going to the place of death.)‭‭ ~Ecclesiastes‬ ‭9‬:‭10‬ ‭ERV‬‬ ดังนั้น พี่น้องที่รัก ไม่ว่าเราทำอะไรตั้งเป้า ทำให้ดี ทำให้ดีกว่าเดิม และทำให้ดีที่สุดเท่าที่เราทำได้ เหมือนคำกล่าวที่ว่า “Good, better, best. Never let it rest. 'Til your good is better and your better is best.” (Being the best is:applying yourself to your potential, putting out the best version of yourself.) …

“B is for bookish, for writers who urge change, like Joan Didion's essays, Naomi Shihab Nye's range.  Brilliant poems, songs, stories, speeches and plays for those writing before us and those writing today.  We know words are vital for the empathy they bring, How Maya Angelou taught us that even caged birds can sing.”  The ABCs of Women's History is an empowering picture book from the New York Times bestselling creative team behind The ABCs of Black History, Rio Cortez and Lauren Semmer. It's a vibrant intersectional celebration of women's power, resilience, and achievement, brought to life through stunning illustrations. In a beautiful picture book in verse brimming with G for Groundbreaking women, National Book Award nominee Rio Cortez and illustrator Lauren Semmer celebrate all the joys, challenges, and historic forward movement of women's history in the United States, with a special focus on the Black women, brown women, transwomen, and others who make change happen. Featured in the book are activists and changemakers like Angela Davis and Marsha P. Johnson, painters and musicians like Georgia O'Keeffe and Kathleen Hanna, scientists and suffragists like Katherine Johnson and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and so many more trailblazing women! The ABCs of Women's History is perfect for providing a conversation starter about equality, women's rights, and the brilliant women who shape our world. It's about historic moments—Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first African-American and first Asian-American Vice President of the United States; Title IX passing  through Congress; Seneca Falls, where the first women's rights convention was held; the Riot Grrrls movement; and so much more. The book is complete with backmatter that shares the details and historical context of the women featured.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

“Analog” technology (things like clocks, dimmer switches, speakers, microphones, walkie-talkies, thermometers, etc.) are directly related to the function which they are performing. They are, in other words, simple. You talk into a microphone - you hear a sound. You look at a clock - it tells the time. You set an alarm - it rings. There's not too much of a gap between experience and function. Digital technology, however, is incredibly complex. Smartphones, robotics, AI, cyber security systems, computers - all these things do not necessarily have direct relations between their uses and their functions. They are not analogous. Instead they are the result of a billion computations and numbers very few of us understand.  Needless to say, the human brain works in analog. Our brains are wired to understand input-result-repeat. So what happens when we disrupt these natural analog ways of being, infusing our very centered, embodied selves with a confusion of digital data? Well, the results aren't great. Not for kids, but not for adults either. Spikes in anxiety, lack of knowledge retention, memory issues, focus problems, the list goes on and on. Here to help us make sense of it all is someone I have admired for quite a long time here on Substack. In this podcast discussion we cover the practicalities of life as an analog family, what drives Katherine's decisions around screen use and her family, how she's raising ‘analog' teens in digital world, and why parents need to get honest with themselves about their own screen use in order for there to be any real change for kids. Although all this talk of screens and the immense cost it has on our lives and our kids can be heavy, ultimately this is an incredibly positive discussion. When we give up our obsession with our phones, we're free - to have experiences, to adventure through life as a family. This is about liberation, discovery, and reclaiming our lives. And special thanks to my daughter, Jojo, for her introduction to this podcast episode. ---- Childhood Unplugged: Practical Advice to Get Kids Off Screens and Find Balance," came out in July 2023. Shortlisted for the Foreword Indies 2023 Awards and with several translations in the works, it has been well-received by readers around the world who are desperate for a solution to their kids' screen time habits.   Martinko makes regular appearances on TV, radio stations, and podcasts across Canada and the U.S., as well as in-person presentations around the country, to talk about curbing digital device use. She writes about digital minimalism, parenting, travel, food, and more in her popular and fast-growing email newsletter, The Analog Family. She has a new weekly column in the Globe and Mail, Canada's premier newspaper. -- Come to Ireland with me in October 2024!  www.bornofwonder.com  www.mediamarqcreative.com Born of Wonder Substack

She's growing native plants with the goal of protecting the state's native wildlife.  Bergstrom's yard is one of the 400 that have been certified by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resource's as a Wild Yard over the program's 25-year history. The program aims to help the state's wildlife by encouraging property owners to grow native plants and incorporate animal habitats.  The state's Wild Yards program is similar to a number of programs around the country that encourage planting native plants for wildlife, coordinator Michelle Fonda said. West Virginia's program is free to be certified. Certified lawns get signs letting neighbors know of their participation in the program.  “You can get started pretty easily by planting a few native wildflowers like milkweed, goldenrod, an oak tree,” said Fonda. Manuals for the program are available by calling the state Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Diversity Program at 304-637-0245.   Read more: https://westvirginiawatch.com/2024/08/13/dnrs-wild-yard-program-lets-private-landowners-get-in-on-wildlife-conservation/   #3 – From WSAZ-TV – When you hear Summersville, you probably think of Summersville Lake and with good reason. “Reframing my approach to public speaking was a game-changer once I recognized I was my own worst critic.”This week, Maryalice sat down with TSL coach Katherine Johnson to chat about all things authenticity on stage. If you think you're being authentic on stage, this may be the wake-up call you didn't know you needed! When it comes to presenting ourselves to an audience, we tend to think about the logistics, what we're wearing, what we're saying, etc., but we can forget about the intention and the science behind building trust and credibility with our audience. "If you think you have to prove you are, you're making it all about yourself, and that cuts connection. Like, if I could just say that you can feel that in your body, you have to find some ways to shift to connection."In this episode, Maryalice and Katherine get into: 03:50 Why actually connecting with the audience matters more than the words you say 08:49 Why aiming for connection will change the success you experience 12:19 How to set yourself up for success on the stage.15:34 What are a few ways we can improve connection and authenticity on stage?16:39 How does nervousness get in the way of our message?20:06 The impact of energy in our pre-stage routine. 25:43 How to overcome fear of criticism during talks.27:07 What it looks like to get comfortable with the fear and anxiety you might feel.33:14 How do you remove armor and promote connection?“Connection matters more than anything because you can actually say something. You could be a mediocre speaker. You could be an up-and-coming speaker. You can be pretty green. But if you know how to focus on connection with your audience, you're gonna do something special. You can continue to get better in terms of your content and some of your stagecraft, but if you know how to create that connection and be authentic from the stage, that does something powerful.”Episode Resources:Get Free Speaker ResourcesBook a Call with The Speaker LabCalculate Your Speaking FeeJoin The Speaker Lab Community on FacebookSubscribe on Apple PodcastsSubscribe on SpotifySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

The book Hidden Figures recounts preparations for John Glenn’s flight into space. Computers were new-fangled inventions in 1962, subject to glitches. Glenn didn’t trust them and worried about calculations for the launch. He knew one brainy woman in the back room could run the numbers. He trusted her. “If she says the numbers are good,” Glenn said, “I’m ready to go.” Katherine Johnson was a teacher and mother of three. She loved Jesus and served in her church. God had blessed Katherine with a remarkable mind. NASA tapped her in the late 1950s to help with the space program. She was Glenn’s “brainy woman,” one of the “human computers” they hired at the time. We may not be called to be brilliant mathematicians, but God calls us to other things: “To each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it” (Ephesians 4:7). We’re to ”live a life worthy of the calling” we’ve received (v. 1). We’re part of one body, in which “each part does its work” (v. 16). Katherine Johnson’s calculations confirmed the course trajectory. Glenn’s launch into orbit was like “hitting a bull’s-eye.” But this was just one of Katherine’s callings. Remember, she was called also to be a mother, teacher, and church worker. We might ask ourselves what God has called us to, whether big or small. Are we “ready to go,” exercising the grace-gifts He’s bestowed, “living a life worthy of [our] calling” (v. 1)?

In this Black History Month special, “father of environmental justice” Dr. Robert Bullard is calling for justice for the community of Shiloh, Alabama, which has suffered repeated flooding ever since a highway was widened and elevated in 2018, causing destruction to homes that Black landowners have proudly kept since the Reconstruction era.  Also, Katherine Johnson was an African American trailblazer who while living under Jim Crow in the south worked at NASA as a mathematician and helped put a man on the moon. Her daughter Katherine Moore shares her mother's story. And poet Camille Dungy transformed her sterile lawn in white Fort Collins, Colorado into a pollinator haven teeming with native plants and the wildlife they attract. Her book Soil: The Story of a Black Mother's Garden recounts that journey alongside a world in turmoil amid the coronavirus pandemic, police violence and wildfires. -- We rely on support from listeners like you to keep our journalism strong.
