In this episode, we sit down with Rev. Ryan Swale, pastor of Immanuel URC in Jordan, Ontario, to discuss his dissertation, The Imprecatory Pastor: A Practical Theology of the Imprecatory Psalms. Swale challenges the modern church to reconsider the often-overlooked imprecatory psalms, which call for divine justice upon enemies. He argues that these psalms are not only permissible for Christians to use but are essential for pastoral ministry. Grounded in the character of God and rooted in biblical promises, Swale shows how these prayers for justice play a vital role in counseling, preaching, prayer, and worship. Swale explains the theological foundations of imprecatory psalms, demonstrating how both the Old and New Testaments affirm their use. He also explores practical applications for pastors, including how imprecatory psalms can be employed in “liturgical warfare,” apologetics, and pastoral counseling. Swale urges pastors to embrace these psalms as powerful tools for confronting evil and injustice, ultimately leading the church in glorifying God's justice. Join us as we explore the biblical and pastoral importance of imprecatory psalms and their role in faithfully navigating a fallen world. In this episode, Briony covers: The importance of bowel cancer screening and how early detection saves lives. The barriers to health screenings in different communities and how to overcome them. Volunteering opportunities for individuals to become community champions and help spread awareness in their neighbourhoods. Mary Mattingly is an interdisciplinary artist who builds sculptural ecosystems that address human consumption and resilience, with an underlying theme of how they might play into our ability to preserve through catastrophic events. Two of her past projects — Waterpod and Swale — were barges that periodically docked in certain areas of New York City. Both depended on a level of nomadism and self-sufficiency. She describes Waterpod as a self-sufficient living space on the water that was a shelter, grew its own food, cleaned its own water and was also a space where she could make artwork. Swale came next. It was an edible landscape and it applied many of the skills she'd learned from Waterpod. Things like navigating a large vessel though city waterways and how foraging for fresh foods could work in a city with so many rules and regulations.  Her artwork always comes from a personal place. In 2008, after numerous surgeries and trips to the hospital, she was diagnosed with Celiac disease. It was a painful journey. For so long, she didn't know what was wrong with her. So, the diagnosis was a relief. She finally had a word to attach to what she was experiencing. That's when she became interested in food. Specifically, she became aware of the inaccessibility to fresh foods — how expensive they are and how many rules and regulations prohibit people from growing their own food in public spaces. At one point, she learned about how a community garden had been shut down due to a real estate development. That was when she realized that spaces like that weren't protected and could be easily taken away. Her interest in the idea of consumption and resilience goes back to her childhood, when she didn't always have the things she wanted. She was born in Rockville, Connecticut, but she grew up in Summersville. Both are small towns that are close to nature. She tells this story about how, when she was a kid, she and her siblings would make a game out of running as fast as they could to reach a neighbor's barn before he let off a warning shot. So, when she moved to New York City, where manmade structures dominate the landscape and overconsumption is common, she began to think about how that affects us, how being so reliant on outside inputs can deprive us of our independence. The sheer scale of the trash cycle in New York City, for example, devastated her. Three nights a week, she would see trash piled up on the sidewalks, sometimes taller than her.

"If instead you just take small action, you not only get the rush of courage from having taken the action and the satisfaction that you've actually done something, but you have negated that building of resentment and regret. So it's a double benefit if you take the tiny action today." Robbie Swale   Robbie Swale explains that courage is a key part of achieving our goals. And with small, repeated actions you can overcome fears, conquer resistance or procrastination and make progress. And often the confidence you need to do something and the competence required to do it is on the other side of doing it. You first need the courage to act - one of the most admirable qualities that humans can ever personify. Robbie talks about his 12-minute method and his four books which help people understand and apply some of what we discuss, and encourages people to take action now.   Robbie Swale is a leadership coach, author and podcaster whose work focuses on creativity, leading with honour and the craft of coaching. He is the host of two podcasts – The Coach's Journey Podcast and The 12-Minute Method Podcast – and the author of The 12-Minute Method series of books, including How to Start When You're Stuck and How to Create the Conditions for Great Work.   Connect with Robbie: Learn more about Robbie from his website and the coach's journey. On this episode of Build Better Brands, Danielle Clarke is joined by Robbie Swale who coaches people on the careers, work and lives to talk about what he does and how brands can succeed.KEY TAKEAWAYSMy Mother, for the last 20 years of her life, was a counsellor, my Dad had some time as a psychotherapist, so they understand talking to people and helping them – it's different to coaching but overlaps in some related ways – my Brother has worked in coaching a little bit and my sister is now doing counselling training so my immediate family gets it, I think. I tend to start with I'm a leadership coach and then I wait to see what people say because there's no perfect way to explain what I do to everyone. If what I really want is in the end to have more clients then the thing that I want is to have actual connection with somebody who is interested in my work so that at some point they might think “I need some coaching, I should talk to Robbie”, or when they're speaking to somebody else they think about me. To get someone to that place isn't about telling them the perfect thing. Most people like, when they get into an interesting conversation, learning about them and that's often what's memorable. These days I give three examples of what I'm most interested in which gives them a lot of space so that if they're interested in any of those things we can have a conversation about that so that I can find out about their leadership challenge, partly because that's what I'm interested in and partly because it's best for business.Everybody has self-doubt and procrastination happen to them and I'd take certain thoughts as proof that I shouldn't do certain things (create a business, write a book). But you don't have to listen to those thoughts, you can choose to believe that they're resistance, which is something probably trying to keep you safe or out of harm's way, but it's stopping me doing the things I want to do. Instead, you can power through those and dance with them in different ways. Each thing I've done has been a different dance with all these ways that I hold myself back and try to avoid the creative battles.Big sportswear brands' TV advs might feature different athletes, but the feel of them doesn't, so you have a feel for what ADIDAS means and Nike means because you've watched a lot of those adverts over a number of years and have that feel for consistency and the fact the message aligns. We've got a baby and buying nappies, I remember TV ads for nappies when I was 6, Huggies Pull-Ups – we don't buy Huggies, we buy Pampers – but I remember that so clearly and they're essentially the same product now because they've got a winning mix. I know Huggies do Pull-Ups and I still remember that because they said it over and over again. BEST MOMENTS‘I'm interested in the craft of coaching, creativity and how we lead with what we might call honour.'‘I'm a recovering perfectionist.'‘If an idea comes to you and you don't take it, it'll go on to someone else.'‘Any medium, like podcasts, where we share what's influenced us and been useful for us is really useful. It's how I've found loads of things that have impacted me.'ABOUT THE GUESTRobbie Swale As a coach, my clients hire me because I have a powerful ability to see things differently.I have cultivated for years the ability to understand different perspectives.I see the truth in the world - I'm not afraid of it. And I'm not afraid to do or say the right thing.I can dance in the moment, I have an ability to feel deeply, and I inspire and invite others to do the same.My clients are innovative, loving and creative. They yearn to understand themselves and their relationship partner. They have a heightened sense of right and wrong and a desire to change the world. My clients include entrepreneurs, investors, theatre directors and even other coaches. If you feel "the rules" are holding you back... How can listening to yourself be an ultimate superpower to live the life you want? Robbie Swale is a leadership coach, author, and podcaster, whose work focuses on creativity, coaching, and leading with honor. His time is split between his coaching business, writing, and various associate work. He supports coaches to grow their businesses and impact and thrive as people, via a community for coaches and a podcast. An ability to see things differently, understand different perspectives and see the truth in the world without the fear to do or say the right thing is the reason why coaches choose to collaborate with him.   In this episode, Robbie shares his journey on how he developed the 12-minute method while discovering how listening can be used as a superpower when it comes to truly live the life we really want. He also shares about the struggles and resistance he has overcome to be able to make an impact through his writing and how this helps him fuel his creative impulses.    Robbie also emphasizes the importance of consistency in building good habits. He realized how writing consistently for 12 minutes over time developed a practice of listening to that surprised him. And it helped him get things done and move him forward, even amidst his fears.   Robbie is the author of How to START when you're STUCK and How to KEEP GOING when you want to GIVE UP, as part of a series that have come out of his 12 Minute Method.  These books provide practical inspiration to get your idea off the ground and help you create good habits and stay focused - even when it's hard.   “6 years of creating, sharing, and of consistency. I've never put my mind to something, created a habit, and kept it before this. And now I know I'm somebody who can do that, and that's transformational.” - Robbie Swale Listen IN Notes:   5:54 - How listening and writing have impacted Robbie's life   7:06  -  “Whose words were those?” - prompt for practicing self-listening, Listen to your inner voice and ask a few questions to deepen your understanding.   14:33  - All about listening to your creative impulse and listening to yourself   25:19  - Listening made simple: listening to ourselves in relation to developing confidence    28:49  - Getting to know the voices in your head. Regret can feel overwhelming, but it is worth pausing to ask yourself: is my current thought pattern feeling like regret, what can I do about it?   42:42- The importance of getting yourself off the hook from all the outcomes that you think you want because you can't predict creativity, change, or organization.    Key Takeaways:   “The good rule of thumb is that the places where we feel the most resistance, the most fear, where we do the most procrastination are the most important places for our soul's evolution.” - The War of Art by Steven Pressfield   “Everybody has the voices that tell them, “You're not the person to do this.”  One of the games, the way to deal with that, is you don't have to listen to those voices…because we have some voices in our heads that may come from fear and mostly that fear isn't real. “- Robbie Swale   “If you write how you think, then as you practice writing, you get better at that, then you also get better at thinking. And if you write how you speak, then you also get better at speaking.” - Robbie Swale Those conversations (with listening) give me amazing energy.  - Robbie Swale   When I am writing, I feel like I am listening beyond myself. - Robbie Swale A small amount of time once a week has a much bigger impact than I expected. - Robbie Swale   What would be exactly enough time and not a second more to make some progress?  - Robbie Swale Notes/Mentions:   Raquel Ark's featured interview at The Coach's Journey Podcast – Listening Alchemy And The Gold Beyond Words Raquel's interview with mutual friend Colin Smith, Stop doing listening and start being listening Jim Dethmer, Kaley Klemp, and Diana Chapman's “15 commitments of Conscious Leadership” Steven Pressfield's “War of Art” Robert Holden    Connect with Robbie Swale:   Website: https://www.robbieswale.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/RobbieSwale LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbieswale/ Podcast: https://anchor.fm/12-minute-method    Connect with Raquel Ark:   www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com  LinkedIn

Swale Nunez joins us on this episode of Beyond the Device  to discuss Identity Management, Web3 and your identity in the Metaverse.  "What we are hoping to do is give users back control over their digital identity," says Swale Nunez.  "You have commoditized my identity and profited off of my identity."Identity is the most valuable thing on the Internet."You brought up the word that I use in a lot of the times when I speak is psychographics, right. And they track and monitor our behavioral patterns and things that we're interested in. I've heard people describe that term as a war tool. Because it's so influential and impactful in the sense that it can have a negative impact and affect massive amount of people. And that's one of the things going back to just our platform and we pride ourselves on our ethical practices. Because right now with our competitors right, and just for those who don't know, a social login is what you see whenever you're either creating an account or login into something. They give you the option to either log with Facebook or login with Google because you have existing accounts with them, right?"The sites you visit know that, the apps you use know that, the companies that control them know that — but do you know that?"In this digital world, our identities are being managed and collected by entities that aren't us. And to make matters worse, they've done an absolutely stellar job at profiting off it. Unfortunately, you don't have a good idea of what's being shared, right. And beyond that, this is your social network, right? There's things on there that if I'm opening a new account for my banking information, right. I don't need my bank to know that I was at this place two weeks ago or these are my friends or these are my likes, right. That's unimportant for my bank account," suggests Swale.  "But a lot of that data is being shared. And that's where the privacy concerns come into play. Because again, I shouldn't have to relinquish that information just to open an account. And I'm using bank account as an example, but any account in general. For us, we are transparent in the data that's being shared and nothing is being shared unless you approve it. Here it's the information that's being requested to create this account. Do you want to share that information? Yes I do or No I don't. Whereas in these other platforms, it's you click a button and you don't know what information is being shared, right."Proper identity management is integral if you want to take back control of your online identity. "To just to exist in this digital climate now, it involves you having to relinquish that control, right. And that's what we're trying to counter as much as possible, right. And it's twofold, right," says Swale. "As much as we champion the user, we create a platform that is beneficial to our partners as well, right. We help accelerate that onboarding process because we simplify authentication of the user and also data capture, right. Because everybody knows in an onboarding process, the key is to make it as personalized as possible, right. Because as users, I think we are two times or twice as engaged when we realize that this presentation is catered to me specifically, right.

Have you ever been waiting in line to grab your morning coffee or your afternoon lunch at your favorite fast-food chain? Now, imagine that moment. You see the menu, you have your order on the tip of your tongue and your money bursting out of your hand... then the weirdo who just walked into the store cuts you off in line. Well, as silly as that may sound, it's actually quite irritating sometimes. So in today's episode, Robbie Swale and I dive into the concept of waving past the little things in life that can bring us down and how we can remain at a happier state of mind. Hey there, my wise friends and welcome to episode 52 of Collective Wisdom with my new friend, Robbie Swale. This week I'm putting out a call to all the procrastinators who might be listening, I count myself as a gold medalist in this particular category, so this one is definitely self-serving. Robbie is someone who has overcome his own procrastination and turned that struggle into a series of very helpful books, which are published this year. The first of which: 'How to Start When You're Stuck' introduces his resistance beating 12-minute method, which, as you'll hear, Robbie has been successfully implementing in all sorts of creative ways in his own life. So, if you have a dream or a project or a book, or indeed any other creative spark inside you that you've been stalling on starting, then this one is definitely for you.   Robbie Swale: The Coach's Journey Podcast   Website: www.robbieswale.com   Buy How to Start When You're Stuck: https://geni.us/startwhenyourestuck   The 12-Minute Method Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/611939479993065   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robbieswale/   email: robbie@robbieswale.com   'It's time for you to die' by Robbie Swale   The War of Art by Steven Pressfield   64 Million Artists   Song 'The Journey of the Magi' by Frank Tuner   Wisdom: ‘The place where you feel the most resistance is probably the most important for your soul's evolution'
