It was an absolute honor to have retired Master Sergeant John Martin on the show. John is a 25 year combat veteran and medic (18D) with the United States Army Special Forces, the coveted "Green Berets". We had a great long podcast, doing a deep dive into his long career starting with the 82nd Airborne and on to the Army Special Forces as a combat medic. The last 30 minutes we dug deep into what John calls the "Hidden Wounds" that he suffered through, TBI and PTS and the struggle that goes with these combat injuries that you cannot see. John now teaches medical training through Lineage Defense, lineagedefense.com, if you want bad ass medic training and TACMED class, check out his August 1st class. I can tell you from his first hand training of me, there is a reason he was the medic that taught the future special forces medics. Enjoy!

How do you respond in an emergency? Jeremy Holder is the managing director and co-founder of EmergiSim. He was born and raised in Western Australia and joined the army at the age of seventeen in which he served as a medic in the Australian Regular Army for seven years. Jeremy was also an Underwater Medicine Clinician within the Special Operations Command for four years and got deployed to Afghanistan and Domestic Counter-Terrorism as a platoon medic. Jeremy later became a civilian Intensive Care Paramedic for NSW Ambulance for twelve years. During that time, he had four days on five days off, which was too much free time for him not to do anything with, and as such, Jeremy identified a need in his industry. It led him to start TacMed, a company specialising in equipment and training for high-threat environments. For five years Jeremy and his wife ran this business from their spare room, they then got government contracts and were able to upscale their business. TacMed trains and equips most police services around Australia, which opened up a need for staff with a specific background. EmergiSim is a virtual reality, emergency simulation training company that prepares first responders for the high-risk and life-threatening emergencies. EmergiSim is a collaborative company by TacMed and the virtual reality studio; Spectre Studios in Sydney. Together they provide unique and scalable emergency response training. In this episode of Talking HealthTech, we sit down with Jeremy Holder from EmergiSim, and he teaches us all there is to know about getting first responders ready for high-risk and life-threatening emergencies with the help of virtual reality. As a bonus, Jeremy gives us a step by step checklist on how to save someone's life if they pass out. Listening to this Talking HealthTech episode will provide you with new and added knowledge surrounding first aid, responding to emergencies or high-risk situations. In addition, Jeremy, an expert first responder and veteran medic teaches us all there is to know about training the police, military, firefighters and other first responders using virtual reality. Check out the episode and full show notes here. To see the latest information, news, events and jobs on offer at Tac Med Australia, visit their Talking HealthTech Directory here.

Dr Dan Pronk is an ex-special forces doctor with the Australian Special Air Service. His Book "Average 70KG Dickhead" was an excellent read. Some books read fast and some read slow. I would say this book read at a great pace. Not to fast and not to slow. Dan really broke down what he was experiencing at the time and then articulated what he learned. He stressed the lessons learned while also giving examples of mistakes that he made. That's helpful because sometimes when we hear a story we think to ourselves "how can I learn from this".This was a fun interview to say the least. As I read passages from the book, Dan put what he was experiencing into perspective and was able to elaborate on his message. The book ranges in lessons that he learned as a triathlete to lessons learned on the battlefield. He gives examples of perseverance and lessons in humility. The beauty of books is that everyone takes away what they want from the story. Here I was able to ask specific questions and get specific answers from Dan. Average 70KG Dickhead gives great perspective into Dan's life. . GRP 55-First and foremost I want to send my condolences to the family of Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Cooper Dayton, 42. Dayton is the first American service member to die to fight the Islamic State in Syria was a decorated and highly experienced Navy explosive ordnance disposal specialist. On with me for this podcast is Australian SAS Major Dr. Dan Pronk. Dan did multiple deployments and was the regimental medical officer for both 2 commandos and SASR (Special Air Service Regiment). Dr. Dan completed his medical schooling on an Army scholarship and served the majority of his military career with Special Operations Units, including four tours of Afghanistan and over 100 combat missions. Dr. Dan was awarded the Commendation for Distinguished Service for his conduct in action on his second tour of Afghanistan. We discuss bleeding control, how to treat internal bleeding, and prolonged field care. Major Pronk is the Medical Director for Tac Med Australia which provides training for civilians, military, and police tactical units in Australia. Below is an excerpt from the podcast: John: Can you share a deployment story with the audience? Major Pronk: We'd been given the role of hitting a target in a known enemy stronghold. We went in with a significant force. The 160th SOAR dropped us in. We decided we'd land right on target and assessed that we would get engaged once we hit the deck. We ripped off the back and ran towards this target village. We had our compounds of interests pre-designated and within 30 seconds of landing, we got engaged by machine gun fire. We didn't sustain any serious casualties on the first night. We stayed on target for over 48 hours. It was near constant combat. They were probing us to assess where we were at. The second day we got into close quarters combat. Sustained some casualties but nothing too serious. We had a small detachment moving forward to clear a couple of machine gun positions. One our guys stepped on an IED. We put together a quick reaction force and got to them. I and another medic worked on him, unfortunately, he didn't make it. We lost our mate there. A fantastic warrior.
