What "First Love" had the Church of Ephesus lost or more correctly, abandoned. Thirty years after Paul's founding of the church in Ephesus in 60 AD and the ongoing teaching by Apollos, Timothy, and John, the Lord commends this church for its intense ongoing spiritual labor unto weariness in serving the Lord. The Lord offers no criticism of their actions and spiritual lives with respect to these activities, except for the "nevertheless" of verse 4…. Nevertheless, literally "despite all," emphasizes a very strong word against them. This busy, industrious, laboring, discerning, persevering church that hated what the Lord hated apparently abandoned their "first love" of Him! In fact they had not merely lost their first love as if it was something lost by accident and could not be found; rather this was a deliberate action on their part to turn their back and walk away from their first love. Using the clues in the passage this video will define the "First Love." all believers should all their lives. 0:00 Church at Ephesus 4:40 Things "which are" 13:00 Commendation of Ephesus 23:02 The "First Love" - That Which was Lacking 23:24 The first of 5 clues as to what "First Love" is 36:23 Defining "First Love"

In this blog post, we will delve into the lessons derived from Revelation 2:18-29, exploring the warnings and encouragements directed at this early church and how they apply to our lives today.Main Content:1. **The Image of Christ** The passage opens with a powerful description of Jesus as the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like polished bronze. This imagery conveys authority and judgment, reminding us that Jesus is not only our savior but also a figure of immense power who sees and knows all. This establishes a foundation for understanding the message to the church in Thyatira.2. **Commendation for Good Works** Jesus acknowledges the congregation's deeds, love, faith, service, and perseverance, stating that their latter works exceed their first. This commendation emphasizes the importance of growth in our faith and actions. Thyatira was praised for its commitment to the gospel and its ability to withstand challenges while actively demonstrating love and service to others. This serves as an encouragement for us to continually strive to deepen our faith and increase our good works.3. **A Serious Warning** Despite the positive remarks, Jesus delivers a stern warning against the tolerance of a false prophetess named Jezebel. Her teachings led many astray into sexual immorality and idolatry. This aspect of the message highlights the dangers of complacency and the acceptance of moral compromises within the church. It serves as a crucial reminder for modern believers to remain vigilant against influences that contradict biblical teachings.4. **The Challenge of Cultural Compromise** The church faced the challenge of pluralism, where the teachings of Christ were mingled with societal norms that contradicted the gospel. This is akin to many contemporary issues where believers may unintentionally adopt values that are contrary to their faith. Jesus calls His followers to reject such compromises, urging a commitment to purity and holiness in their walk with Him.5. **The Call to Repentance** Jesus expresses His desire for Jezebel to repent, highlighting His patience and mercy. However, the refusal to turn away from sin leads to dire consequences. This aspect of the message serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of repentance in our own lives. It challenges us to reflect on areas where we may be compromising and to seek a return to a pure and devoted relationship with God.Conclusion: In summary, the message to the Church in Thyatira offers timeless lessons about faithfulness, the importance of good works, the dangers of cultural compromise, and the necessity of repentance. As we reflect on these teachings, let us strive to be a community that embodies love and service while remaining steadfast in our commitment to the truth of the gospel. Key...

Discussion QuestionsSermon Overview Aim to please God through giving yourself, not serving yourself.I. What God condemns: self-serving fakery (20:45-47)II. What God commends: self-giving faith (21:1-4)Digging Deeper    Read Luke 20:45-21:41. This passage teaches that God condemns self-serving fakery (20:45-47). We can all be tempted to pretend (“to act in the presence of certain people in ways we would never act in their absence.”).  Are there particular circumstances or people around whom you can find yourself tempted toward pretending to be someone you are not? Why do you think that is? 2. The religious leaders of Jesus' day made an outward appearance of loving God and living for him, but in reality, they were only loving and serving themselves. Why do you think we can tend to clearly see this in others (and be troubled by it), and yet often fail to see aspects of this in our own hearts? 3. Are there aspects of your life (e.g., your job, your education, your life experience, etc.) that can, if you are honest, incline you to think you are in some way superior to others? Please share.  4. How can we guard our own hearts and help one another in fighting this temptation (of #3 above)?   5. It was said in the sermon, “Hypocrisy isn't unique to Christianity. But Christianity is unique in its resources to fight hypocrisy.” What does this mean? What are some of the hypocrisy-fighting resources available to us as believers? How might we use these resources to their fullest potential? 6. This passage teaches that God commends self-giving faith. (21:1-4)  In what sense was the widow's offering an act of loving, self-giving faith? What might acts of loving, self-giving faith look like for you? 7. We who are members of CrossWay have, on our membership applications, committed ourselves to using our “God-given gifts, time, energy, and wealth to support this local church.” How would you assess yourself? Are you doing what you said you would do? If there is room for growth, what might be a good next step in pursuing that? 8. What might be some ways for us to assess if our giving is sacrificial in nature, or merely “out of (our) abundance”? 9. Read 2 Corinthians 8:9: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” How does (should) the self-giving of Jesus for our sakes motivate our own self-giving for God's purposes in the world? Prayer

This podcast episode dives deep into the lessons Jesus imparts to this church, offering timeless wisdom that resonates with believers today.Main Content: **The Context of Pergamum** The Church in Pergamum existed in a city notorious for its pagan worship and idol practices, symbolized by the phrase "where the throne of Satan sits." TS Wright highlights that this church was located right in the midst of spiritual warfare, a battleground where faith and culture collided. Despite the overwhelming presence of evil, members of the church held fast to their faith, demonstrating remarkable courage and commitment.**Commendation for Faithfulness** Jesus begins His message with commendation, acknowledging the church's perseverance even in the face of persecution. TS Wright points out the significance of this acknowledgment, especially regarding Antipas, a faithful witness who was killed for his beliefs. This serves as a powerful reminder that true faith often requires sacrifice, and believers today must also hold fast to their convictions despite cultural pressures.**Warnings Against Compromise** However, the message is not solely one of encouragement. Jesus issues a stern warning against those in the church who have adopted the teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans, practices that led to idolatry and sexual immorality. TS Wright emphasizes that just as the early church faced temptations to conform to cultural norms, modern believers must also guard against the subtle ways in which culture can infiltrate their faith. He urges listeners to recognize the importance of living a life that is set apart, above the moral compromises prevalent in society.**The Call to Repentance** A key theme in this message is the call to repentance. TS Wright elucidates that repentance is a process, not just a one-time confession. It involves a deep heart transformation, turning away from sin, and taking active steps towards obedience. He reminds believers that while the journey may be challenging, the promise of restoration and a new identity in Christ awaits those who repent. **Living Above Culture** In a world where cultural acceptance is often equated with success, TS Wright's insights challenge believers to prioritize their relationship with Jesus above all else. He discusses the dangers of becoming a "carnal Christian," attempting to blend faith with worldly ideologies. Instead, he encourages a commitment to living out the teachings of Christ, even when it comes at a personal cost. The podcast underscores the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between faith and culture, particularly in moments of conflict. Conclusion: The message to the Church in Pergamum serves as a timely reminder for contemporary believers to navigate their faith with courage and conviction. They all deemed it a waste to anoint the savior with the expensive perfume.Jesus explained that this perfume was a pre burial anointing. “The Philadelphian church was not great, but it was good; it was not powerful, but it was faithful.” Does that describe the congregation to which you belong? Drawing from Christ's words to the church of Philadelphia in Revelation 3, Spurgeon identifies the word of praise which Christ offers, the word of prospect, and the word of promise. As ever, the preacher uses this congregation to hold up a mirror in which we may assess our own reflection. Can we receive such praise for our faithfulness in holding to the Word of God? Have we been faithful with what we have received, and so been granted a prospect of further usefulness? And, with all that, can we therefore rest upon the promise, that having kept God's word, we shall ourselves be kept from temptation? "The Philadelphian church was not great, but it was good; it was not powerful, but it was faithful." Does that describe the congregation to which you belong? Drawing from Christ's words to the church of Philadelphia in Revelation 3, Spurgeon identifies the word of praise which Christ offers, the word of prospect, and the word of promise. As ever, the preacher uses this congregation to hold up a mirror in which we may assess our own reflection. Can we receive such praise for our faithfulness in holding to the Word of God? Have we been faithful with what we have received, and so been granted a prospect of further usefulness? And, with all that, can we therefore rest upon the promise, that having kept God's word, we shall ourselves be kept from temptation? A typical blend of encouragement and challenge, all soaked in the savour of Christ, gives us an opportunity to examine ourselves, to aspire to greater faithfulness and holiness, and to take comfort in the goodness and mercy of our Redeemer.

The sermon centers on the importance of faithful, humble service within the local church, using Phoebe's commendation in Romans 16 as a model. It emphasizes that true ministry is not abstract but rooted in specific, tangible service within a local assembly, where believers are called to be both commendable and accountable. Pastor Friesen underscores that Christian identity is not merely spiritual kinship but requires practical, Christ-honoring conduct, including proper church polity, integrity, and a willingness to be received and serve in a manner worthy of saints. Through Phoebe's example as a trusted servant, a protector of the vulnerable, and a woman whose name symbolized her past yet remained unashamed of it, the message calls all believers—especially women—to embrace their role in the body of Christ with humility, purpose, and enduring faithfulness, while resisting legalistic fear and cultural compromise. The tone is pastoral, convicting, and deeply rooted in Scripture, urging the congregation to prioritize godly character over numbers, and to live as lights in a world still under sin's influence.

Today we have Dr. Mari Dezawa, one of the world's leaders in stem-cell research and regenerative medicine. Mari is a pioneer in this emerging field and is known worldwide for her discovery of MUSE cells, a unique type of stem cell with exciting clinical potential. MUSE is short for Multilineage-Differentiating Stress-Enduring Cells. The discovery of the MUSE cell in humans has many biological and medical implications, and the human body may have a greater regenerative potential than we might have ever imagined. In collaboration with major national and international institutions, Mari and her colleagues are promoting research on MUSE cell-based regenerative medicine for diseases without definitive treatments. She and her team are also exploring the differences in regenerative capacity between less and more complex animals from the viewpoint of the stem-cell system. Mari is a professor and chair of the Division of Stem Cell Biology and Histology at Tohoku University School of Medicine. She has published more than 200 papers and is particularly known for her 2010 paper on the mechanisms of MUSE cells. In 2018, she was appointed a fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Japanese Government's Prize for the Commendation for Science and Technology. Show notes: [00:04:10] Ken opens the interview by mentioning that although Mari was born in Japan, her family moved to the U.S. when she was only eight months old. Ken asks if it is true that Mari finds it difficult to answer the question of where her hometown is. [00:05:23] Ken asks Mari how she handled moving so much as a child. [00:05:52] Ken mentions that Mari's father was a researcher and asks when she became passionate about research and science. [00:06:58] Ken mentions that Mari attended the Chiba University School of Medicine and asks what inspired her to go to medical school. [00:07:19] Ken explains that after Mari earned her medical degree, she attended Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine for her Ph.D. Ken mentions that while Mari was initially a cardiology resident, she later decided to focus on clinical research and became a stem-cell researcher. Ken asks what led her to shift from cardiology to stem-cell research. [00:08:25] Ken explains that Mari is well-known for her research into the role of stem cells in regeneration and functional recovery of nerve and muscle cells. Ken asks how and when she first became interested in stem cells. [00:09:56] Ken asks Mari to give a brief overview of stem cells and their significance. [00:11:18] Ken mentions that Mari remained at Chiba University as a research associate after earning her Ph.D in 1995. She then took a position as an associate professor at Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medicine before accepting a position at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine as an associate professor in 2003. Ken explains that while at Kyoto, Mari developed methods to induce bone marrow stromal cells to generate neuro and skeletal muscle cells, which play a crucial role in tissue repair and regeneration and are widely studied for their potential to serve as therapeutic agents. Ken asks Mari to give a quick primer on the crucial role these cells play in tissue repair. [00:13:25] Ken explains that in 2003, a member of Mari's technical staff at Kyoto asked her whether they should discard some cultured adult rat and human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) after she had noticed several strange cell clusters. Ken asks Mari to share what happened next and how this set her on the path to the discovery of Multilineage-Differentiating Stress-Enduring Cells. [00:16:03] Ken asks Mari to elaborate on this story and explain how a mistake led to this incredible discovery. In Matthew 3:17 God consecrates His Son. Here Dr. Mitchell says, Jesus is the ground of His Father's delight. In Mt. 4:1-4, we see the temptation of the Son of God, the Messiah, Jesus. Our Savior was tested as a man, as the Messiah, and finally as God.Dr. Mitchell says, Jesus successfully proved His moral right to the throne. He points out,-- these 3 temptations are the same temptations Adam and Eve faced in the Garden of Eden. Dr. Mitchell says, We are all tested by temptations as to the grace of God, the Word of God, and the Person of God. Jesus' temptations show the Savior utilizing the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. After each temptation by the devil, Jesus quotes Scripture to deflect that temptation and to confront the devil with the truth. Here on the Unchanging Word Bible Broadcast, is Dr. Mitchell, Matthew 3:17.

Dr. Mitchell continues with Mt.3:10-17 which heralds the coming of the King. John confronts the Pharisees and Sadducees as religious leaders needing to repent concerning their lack of relationship to the Savior and accept Him. The phrase, 'the baptism of the Holy Spirit' is found in the NT only seven times. Dr. Mitchell makes mention of the three kinds of baptisms written about in the New Testament.Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan river. At this baptism, Jesus identifies Himself with the nation of Israel, thus fulfilling all righteousness. Dr. Mitchell gives us three reasons why the sinless Jesus needed to be baptized. At this baptism, we can hear the voice of God the Father to His Son, "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." God both identifies & commends His Son for all to hear. Here is Dr. Mitchell on the Unchanging Word Bible broadcast, Matthew 3:10.

INTRODUCTION“But we have learned to avoid that sort of thing; we say that it just isn't practical to be too bold in the proclamation of the gospel today. In other words, we have embraced expediency. It has been said that the church in the United States of America has been placed on a reservation. We're still allowed to exist; we're still allowed to practice our faith; we're still allowed to pray in our churches. But we are tacitly forbidden from moving off the reservation and into the public square to make public proclamations of faith. For instance, if a Christian is asked to pray at a public event and then prays in Jesus' name, he is almost certain to be excoriated for having the audacity to pray publicly in the name of Christ. We're simply not allowed to do that today.”“But I have noticed that it isn't just secularists who howl when a Christian wanders off the reservation and proclaims the gospel in the public square. Other Christians also make a fuss. Why? Because when some Christians draw the ire of secular society, everyone who enjoys peace on the reservation becomes frightened that they will become targets of the enemy. Many who claim the name of Christ would rather live peacefully on the reservation than disturb the world with the good news. That's exactly what happened in Jerusalem”“ Those to whom God had entrusted the ministry of the truth of His Word compromised again and again so as not to upset the Romans and possibly endanger their positions of prestige. Thus, when Jesus attracted a following, the Jewish leaders said to themselves: “If we leave this man alone, He will stir up so much trouble that the Romans will take action. They'll come after us because they'll see that Jesus is a Jew, and we'll be held responsible for not controlling one of our own. Then our place and our whole nation will be lost. So what are we going to do?” In short, the Jews wanted to prevent Jesus from causing a stir among the people lest they lose their positions of power”John - An Expositional Commentary, R.C. SproulBottom line: True worship that is worthy of Jesus is costly, humble and lasting because it is the overflow of seeing the worth of Jesus.OUTLINE (with help from ChatGPT)Purpose: To challenge believers to examine what Jesus is worth to them—and to act accordingly.I. The Setting for Costly Worship (vv. 1–2)• Context:• Six days before Passover — Jesus' final week before the cross.• Dinner in Bethany, hosted in His honor.• Lazarus, alive because of Jesus, is at the table.• Application:• Worship thrives in a context of gratitude (Lazarus alive) and fellowship (friends gathered).• Do you make space in your life for intentional, focused worship of Jesus?II. The Act of Costly Worship (v. 3)• Mary's Action:• Amount: About 12 oz. of pure nard (worth a year's wages).• Method: She pours it on Jesus' head and feet (harmonizing with Matt. 26 & Mark 14).• Posture: Wiping His feet with her hair — humility, vulnerability, cultural scandal.• Impact: The fragrance fills the whole house.“This was an act of great devotion and humility. We have already seen that John the Baptist declared he was not worthy to untie Jesus' sandal strap (John 1:27). A rabbi's disciple was essentially a servant to his teacher, but he was never required to attend to his master's feet, for that was considered the lowest task of all. When John said he was not worthy to untie Jesus' sandal strap, he was saying he was lower than a disciple. Mary probably felt the same way, but she gladly cleansed Jesus' feet” John - An Expositional Commentary, R.C. Sproul• Application:• Worship that costs nothing is worth nothing (2 Sam. 24:24).• What's your “jar of nard”—the thing of greatest value you would pour out for Him?• True worship is public, humble, and leaves a lasting influence.III. The Objection to Costly Worship (vv. 4–6)• Judas' Complaint:• Claims the perfume should have been sold to help the poor.• Real motive: greed and self-interest (he stole from the money bag).• Principle:• Hypocrisy often cloaks itself in noble language.• There will always be critics when you worship extravagantly.• Application:• Don't let the criticism of others rob you of devotion to Christ.• Examine your own heart: am I defending a lesser priority over the worth of Jesus?IV. The Commendation of Costly Worship (vv. 7–8)• Jesus' Defense:• “Leave her alone… It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.”• Mary's act is prophetic—she is doing what others will miss after His death.• “The poor you will always have…” — not dismissing the poor, but highlighting the uniqueness of this moment.• Application:• There are moments of obedience and devotion that cannot be delayed—do them now.• Jesus treasures and defends the worship offered to Him.V. The Aftermath of Costly Worship (vv. 9–11)• Crowd Reaction:• Many come to see both Jesus and Lazarus.• Religious Leaders' Reaction:• They plot to kill Lazarus too, because his life is drawing people to Jesus.• Application:• Your devotion may attract some and provoke others.• A transformed life is a powerful witness—but it may also invite opposition.CONCLUSIONBottom line: True worship that is worthy of Jesus is costly, humble and lasting because it is the overflow of seeing the worth of Jesus.Call to Action:1. Examine His worth to you — Do your actions match your beliefs about Jesus' value?2. Bring your “jar of nard” — What is the most valuable offering you can give Jesus today?3. Act while you can — Mary seized her moment; so should you.Closing Illustration:The missionary widow selling her only cow to fund a church roof, or a believer giving up a career for the sake of ministry—and connect it to Mary's act.If Jesus is worth everything, then nothing is wasted when it's given to Him.INVITATIONWhat about you? What is your "jar of nard"?Peter puts it all in perspective in his first sermon:““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” ‭‭Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭36‬-‭39‬ ‭NIV‬‬How do we respond? Answer 2 questions:Take out a card or piece of paper right now. Write down the answer to these questions: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.Lord's Supper, 1 Cor 11:23-26 is good passage. Also, say something like, "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." This week the British Fine Artist Frances Featherstone. Frances says her art is guided by an appreciation for storytelling. Narrative serves at the heart of her work with which she seeks to fill her paintings with ideas and conceptual depth. Her creative explorations revolve around the interplay between figures and interior spaces offering viewers a window into intimate emotions that are entangled with the spaces we occupy. Frances employs aerial perspectives to craft patterns seen from above that compress and flatten the spatial dimensions. These pieces venture beyond the constraints of conventional perception and seek to challenge our normal sense of space. One of two children—she has a brother Walter, Frances was born in 1976 in Roade, England, to parents Jane Gill, a teacher —formerly a silversmith and jeweler—and Michael Featherstone a furniture designer. Art runs throughout her family and Frances was always encouraged and supported in her talent which naturally led a formal art education. She achieved an Art Foundation Distinction and First Class Degree in Fine Art and Visual Culture from the University of the West of England, Bristol. before changing direction for her Post Grad in Interactive Multimedia at Bath Spa University, graduating in 2000. She worked as a Designer in the BBC's Interactive Factual and Learning Department for six years. In 2006 she got married and started a family, at which point she returned to painting, firstly by taking commissions for portraits. Her work took off and she was quickly gaining recognition. In 2019 Frances was shortlisted for ‘Artist of the Year' by ‘Artists and Illustrators Magazine'. In 2021 she won the ‘The Chair's Purchase Prize' at the ING Discerning Eye exhibition at The Mall Galleries in London. And in 2024 was awarded a Certificate of Commendation for ‘an exceptional work selected for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters' annual exhibition. This week in Sea of Thieves, there's not much news to cover so I take some time to talk about some of the things I think could use a refresh. No surprise for folks who listen to the show but it's about UI. Commendations need to have an overhaul on where they're located and how they should be labeled. I also go into some thoughts about the QA for the game and some concerns I have as a result of chatting with DavrimTV from Pirate Talk Radio. Back in 2016, Japan PM Abe visited President-elect Trump at the Trump Tower. But why have Japanese leaders rushed to meet with Mr. Trump? Because America is important to Japan's economy and security. And vice versa. . Episode #1123 Unveiling the Supernatural Code in Genesis Richard welcomes Carl Gallups, author of Eyes to See, back to explore the stunning mystery hidden within the very first words of the Bible. According to Gallups, these words form a supernatural code—a message that tells the story of Jesus. The discovery, which he unpacks on page 252 of his book, reveals 11 words that not only point to Christ's divinity but echo themes found in Colossians 1:15-20. Gallups takes us on a journey through these ancient words, sharing how they were revealed to him, why they've remained hidden for centuries, and what this incredible revelation means for believers today. With deep insights into Scripture, prophecy, and the supernatural dimensions of the Bible, Carl challenges us to rethink our approach to God's Word. Don't miss this eye-opening conversation on the hidden messages that may reshape how we understand the Bible and our faith. GUEST: Carl Gallups has been the senior pastor of Hickory Hammock Baptist Church in Milton, Florida since 1987. He was the host of two shows - Ask the Preacher with Pastor Carl Gallups, and Freedom Friday with Carl Gallups - the Oval Office of Gulf Coast Talk Radio.
