In this episode, I talk with Paige—a proud member of the Twiniversity mom squad—about her journey through twin parenthood and the unexpected challenges that reshaped her family's first year. What started as a smooth pregnancy shifted dramatically at the 20-week scan, when Paige's daughter was diagnosed with a congenital lung defect requiring surgery right after birth.Paige shares what it was like to navigate the NICU with both twins, including the emotional ups and downs, the critical role of hospital social workers, and the resources that made all the difference—from Medicaid to home nursing care. She opens up about the relief that came with finding financial and emotional support systems, and why advocating for your family's needs is so essential when medical complexities enter the picture. We also dive into the realities of transitioning home from the NICU, balancing medical care with everyday parenting, and the challenges of finding the right support team. Paige's story is not only about resilience but also about the importance of knowing where to turn for help.Whether you're a parent preparing for the NICU, navigating a complicated pregnancy, or simply curious about the resources available to families with unique medical needs, this conversation is full of honesty, encouragement, and practical guidance.EPISODE THEMES

Having seen far too many traffic accidents in my travels over the years, I appreciated a story I heard some years ago from Adrian Rogers. A lady was driving down the highway when she came upon the scene of a terrible accident. She got out of the car, and she saw this driver who had been thrown from the car. He was seriously injured and he was bleeding profusely. Later the lady recounted her response to this heart-rending scene. She said, "Thank goodness, I remembered my First Aid just when it was needed the most, and I immediately put my head between my knees to keep from passing out!" I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Missing Your Mission." This lady is not about to be a hero on the nightly news! No, she's oblivious to the desperate need in front of her and instead she's just all focused on herself. The question is, "could that be us?" On the scene where there are people in front of us who are spiritually dying, without Christ, without any hope of heaven and we're just standing there, worrying about ourselves. Our word for today from the Word of God in 2 Kings 7:9 is a pretty shocking Old Testament picture of a modern spiritual tragedy. The city of Samaria is under siege, and the people of the city are facing such extreme starvation, some of them are even resorting to cannibalism believe it or not. Every morning you can hear the screams of mothers who have awakened to find that their child has starved to death during the night or the sobs of children who just watched their mother die of starvation. Meanwhile, four lepers, who are living as outcasts outside the city wall, are also on the edge of starvation. Of course, they just depend on handouts from the city. So they choose a course that they consider their only hope for survival. They're going to surrender to the enemy and hope they'll get fed by them. Well, during the night, the Lord has done a miracle that has caused the enemy to retreat, and they have left their camp and their supplies behind. So the lepers stumble into this empty camp and a mountain of food. The Bible says that as they sat there gorging themselves, "They said to each other, 'We're not doing right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let's go at once...'" Question: how can you have what dying people need and not tell them about it? Tragically, that's many of us who belong to Jesus Christ. We do it day after day. We keep feasting on the Jesus-banquet, filling up with more and more blessings while never telling the spiritually starving people we know about our Jesus. We can't imagine having one day without Jesus, and they've never had one day with Him. And without Him, they have no chance of heaven. They will never be in heaven with you. God is trying to open your eyes to the life-or-death emergency that is right in front of you day after day. He's put you on the scene where you could save some lives, where you could rescue some spiritually dying people. As inadequate as you may feel, you are the one that Jesus placed in their lives so you could help some of those folks be in heaven with you! Is it risky to step out and try to rescue someone? Sure it is. Just ask Jesus. But if He could die for those people we know, how can we not at least tell them that He died for them? Please don't let them die without a chance at Jesus. See, you are that chance.

In this episode of Homeopathy 247, host Mary Greensmith welcomes homoeopath Anindita Sinha to explore one of the most iconic remedies in homoeopathy: Belladonna. Often included in every homeopathic first-aid kit, Belladonna is known for its dramatic and sudden symptoms, especially in children. Anindita dives into its historical background, clinical use, and why it remains a go-to remedy for acute conditions like fever, inflammation, and throbbing pain. The History and Nature of Belladonna The word Belladonna means "beautiful lady" and originates from a time when women in Italy used drops from the plant to dilate their pupils, a sign of allure and beauty. However, the plant—also known as deadly nightshade—is toxic in material doses. In its homeopathic form, Belladonna is diluted and succussed (shaken) to release its healing energy. It can then be safely used to treat the very symptoms it might cause in its raw state: heat, redness, throbbing, and sudden inflammation. Key Characteristics of Belladonna Anindita describes Belladonna as the “Prince of Congestion.” It's associated with: Sudden onset of symptoms High fevers with flushed cheeks and dilated pupils Redness, heat, and throbbing pain Sensitivity to light and touch Delirium and heightened mental activity This remedy is especially useful in treating children who suddenly become unwell, often after exposure to heat or sun. It also covers a range of acute symptoms in the head, digestive tract, or reproductive organs. How Belladonna Works in Homoeopathy Mary and Anindita explain the core principle of homoeopathy—“like cures like.” A substance that can cause symptoms in a healthy person can help heal those symptoms in a sick person when highly diluted. This is why Belladonna, although poisonous in its natural state, becomes a gentle and effective healing remedy in homeopathic potency. Remedy Relationship: Belladonna and Calcarea Carbonica Anindita shares an interesting connection between Belladonna and Calcarea Carbonica (Calcarb). Although opposite in many ways—Calcarb being slow and sluggish while Belladonna is intense and fiery—Belladonna is often the acute remedy for a Calcarb constitution when symptoms become intense and inflamed. She explains this through soil composition and how Belladonna, a plant, grows in chalky soil (associated with calcium). Real-Life Experiences Anindita shares personal and clinical examples of using Belladonna: During her postpartum period, it helped manage sudden heavy bleeding. For a neighbour suffering from a painful boil, Belladonna eased the intense throbbing. In children with sudden high fevers or even in autistic children experiencing aggressive flare-ups, Belladonna helps calm the storm. Fever and Belladonna Belladonna shines in acute fevers—especially in children with flushed cheeks, delirium, and restlessness. Anindita reminds listeners that while homoeopathy can be complementary, severe symptoms like meningitis should always be seen by a doctor. Belladonna can be taken en route to hospital as supportive care. Belladonna is a must-have remedy for any household. Its wide-ranging application in acute illnesses, particularly those with sudden, intense symptoms, makes it a staple in homoeopathy kits. Anindita's stories and insights make it clear why this remedy remains one of the most valued in practice. Text Our Show HostsTonight, we have Special Guest Oklahoma State Representative Jay Steagall about the importance of Radio Comms during an SHTF Grid-Down Situation. Now to be clear we won't be nerding out or go into the weeds with tech talk, inner workings, or specs on this episode, just an easy listening and entertaining discussion on the roles these types of radios serve when communication with the outside world goes offline. That time will come… it always has, and it always will, when the lights go out… when the hum of the air conditioner dies… when your phone becomes a paperweight… in that moment, the silence, will be deafening. Some people will panic at that exact moment. But most others will work it out in their head… give it 30 mins, maybe an hour… they'll have it back up. As if we knew who “They” really were. But when that 24hr mark arrives and there's still no power, no phone, no creature comforts, that's when most of the rest of us start to panic, including me. The difference is, that panic, for me, is my trigger. It's my brain coming to terms with reality and switching my thought process to survival. Cuz I'm already prepped… the readiness box is checked. Now it comes down to what I know and what I've practiced… It's Go Time. It's pure survival, starting now. You've got all the preps… or do you? Let's see. Shelter, Water, Food, Meds, First Aid, All the Toilet Paper you could rip off the shelves the last time someone cried wolf, and Defense… Hell! Offense as well. And don't forget that you have your support team… Family, Friends, Neighbors, Your Network… Do you? Are you sure there's “There” there? I mean… Are they walking distance away, maybe next door? Chances are no, there not. Maybe down the road a bit. Across town… across the county, or state..? Maybe even across country. In a grid-down world, information is survival. The ability to call for help, to gather intel, to connect with your team — that's not a luxury. That's your lifeline. Cell towers, down. The internet, down. Satelites, can't be reached. What's left? Voices and signals, of the prepared, that will be carried throughout the airwaves.Today, we're talking about radios. The heartbeat of survival communication. Shortwave, HAM, Walkies big rigs, small rigs, even the Frankenstein kits pieced together with good old fashioned Redneck Engineering. It doesn't really matter what you're running. Three Words That Strike Fear in Vets and Owners Host Laura Reeves is joined by Dr. Marty Greer talking about the three words that strike fear in both veterinarians and owners. “These three things are what can take a normal, easy, lovely day at the veterinary clinic and turn it upside down and cause clients to have to wait and then swear at their veterinary team because they don't understand why they have to wait because they had an appointment,” Greer said. Those three words, according to Greer, are GDV (bloat), Pyo (pyometra) and HBC (hit by car). Refresher on these three critical care situations: Pyometra is a uterine infection. “Fevers are almost never seen with pyometras,” Greer said. “And it's a hard thing to understand how you can have a uterus full of pus and not run a fever. But apparently the uterus is a privileged organ and it allows for foreign things to happen in it. That could be a pyometra. That could be a puppy. “So unfortunately, they almost never run a fever, so don't rely on that to be a symptom. If you were waiting for a fever to happen, it means that the uterus probably just ruptured and the dog now has a belly full of puss instead of just a uterus full of puss. And when your belly is full of puss, you're in big trouble. And so, if you're waiting for a temperature, you're decreasing your dog's odds of survival. “If your dog was recently in heat, they aren't feeling well, they're not eating well, they're perhaps drinking buckets and buckets of water, maybe vomiting, maybe have a vaginal discharge, maybe not. Do not wait for a fever (to take the dog to the vet).” GDV (gastric dilatation and volvulus) is bloat, where a dog's stomach fills with air and may twist, causing a very rapid cascade of life-threatening events in the dog's system. HBC (hit by car) and other trauma is covered in our K9 911 First Aid seminar series linked here.
In this one, Cody talks with Eric Heil. He's an educator and a legendary Arctic Man competitor. Alongside his longtime snowmachine partner, Len Story, Eric won five times. He started competing in Arctic Man in 1990 at the age of 30, and from the beginning, he immersed himself in the event — not just as an athlete, but as part of the crew. He helped with course safety and setting up markers at First Aid, the critical release point where the skier detaches from the snowmachine at the top of the uphill tow. He was the first skier to break the five-minute barrier, clocking in at exactly four minutes — an Arctic Man record at the time. It would take 30 years before anyone broke four minutes, something he attributes to better snow conditions, evolving course design, improved equipment and a rising level of competition. He was also one of the first racers to bring a technical mindset to the event, experimenting with waxes, analyzing the terrain, monitoring snow temperatures, tracking weather patterns, adjusting his line based on changing snowpack, and timing his transitions to maximize speed and efficiency throughout the course. After nearly three decades of running the course — his last race was in 2018 — Eric says he's run it more than anyone else. Eric's path to becoming a high-speed athlete started early. He learned to ski when he was just four years old, and by six he was skijoring. That early exposure to speed and unpredictability planted the seed for a lifelong pursuit of elite competition. In college, he raced for the University of Alaska Anchorage and set his sights on becoming a world champion downhiller. As a world-class athlete, he was comfortable reaching 90 miles per hour on his skis. That kind of speed requires more than just fearlessness — it demands focus, precision and the ability to see what isn't always visible. Eric says downhill skiers rely heavily on visualization because when you're racing across long stretches of terrain at speeds so fast they blur your vision, you can't always react in real time — you have to anticipate. That means memorizing every feature of the course ahead of time and trusting your muscle memory to guide you through. He says that even now, he can close his eyes and mentally replay the details of every downhill course he's ever raced.

In this episode I sit down with Simon Carkeek from PracMed, a New Zealand-based company focused on practical first aid training. Simon shares how PracMed's hands-on, evidence-based approach has saved 127 lives by emphasizing essential skills like bleeding control and airway management. The discussion covers the importance of confidence, real-world scenarios, and mental health support for responders. Simon also talks about his military background, the company's high training standards, and their mission to empower people to act decisively in emergencies, both in New Zealand and globally. In Simon's words- “"It all began with a vision of a better way. After spending nearly 7 years working in hostile environments around the globe, I returned home and started working in industry training. Simon saw firsthand how poor the quality training was in NZ, and how many organisations treat courses as ‘tick-the-box' exercises only for compliance. He knew that in order to save more New Zealanders from preventable death, Kiwis needed to be given the knowledge and opportunity for engaging, relevant training. His goal is to ensure there are more competent and confident responders, and less qualified witnesses. In 2018, PracMed NZ was born."

Bandaids are undeniably handy, and there are plenty of situations where they do the job that needs doing. But there are also lots of times when a wound is too big, too irregular, or too sensitive for a bandaid to be the best choice. That's where bespoke bandaging comes into play! You can learn bandaging basics really quickly – yes, even through podcast audio – and that's what today's episode is all about.Bandages are extremely versatile and customizable – even without getting a dozen different types of gauze and pads. Truly, a box of 2″ and 4″ roller gauze, plus some gauze pads and micropore tape, is plenty for most situations you'll run into. For the purposes of practice, they're all you need to get started. When you're practicing your bandaging technique, your big goal is to make the bandages neat, secure, and yet still allowing for a normal range of motion. The best way to get good at this is to practice. The best way to practice is to get some friends together for a “mummy party”, where everyone gets bandaged by everyone else! We're highlighting first aid herbalism on the podcast all month. When putting together a bug-out bag in case of emergencies, don't forget your herbs! Just like a first aid kit, a go bag is best when you construct it according to your specific needs, and the needs of people you'll be with. This isn't a “one size fits all” situation! The same goes for circumstances when you need to shelter in place. A ‘stay-in stash' is just a go-bag without the go. It's an orderly, intentional accumulation of all the things you'll need if the power goes out for a week, or you can't leave your home for an extended period of time.Herbs, food, and ‘everything else' all need to go in there – and don't forget water! In this episode we discuss what to include, what to avoid, and ways to keep your stock rotating and fresh for a moment of need.Mentioned in this episode:HHP 233: Emergency Readiness Needs A Meal PlanFEMA AppWe're highlighting first aid herbalism on the podcast all month.
