While the Red Cross is known primarily for blood drives and disaster relief, some of its most important work keeps people out of the hospital. The Home Fires Campaign has installed more than 3 million smoke alarms in homes across the country, saving thousands of lives. Emergency and disaster preparedness campaigns help communities ready themselves for weather related disasters. And CPR and First Aid training are critical to providing care at the moment people in crisis need it.rnrnMike Parks has been leading the Northern Ohio Region since 2015, after he retired as Rear Admiral from the U.S Coast Guard. In his role, Parks oversees five American Red Cross Chapters covering 31 Northern Ohio counties, serving 5.3 million people. In addition, he is frequently called on to lead disaster relief efforts, deploying for weeks to Maui to respond to the Lahaina fires, and to North Carolina after the flash floods from Hurricane Helene.rnrnJoin us for the next forum in the City Club's Local Heroes series, as we hear about the organization keeping blood in the blood banks, and our communities and neighbors safe from disaster.

In this episode of the Twiniversity Podcast, Natalie talks with Maddie Rahlf, a twin mom of three girls, about the "double whammy" delivery - giving birth to one twin vaginally and the other by C-section in the very same hour. Maddie shares how her twins were a complete surprise - a natural, spontaneous twin conception with no twins in the family, discovered at her 12-week ultrasound - and how reading Nat's book helped her find solid ground once the shock wore off. Because Baby B had a marginal cord insertion and was measuring under the 10th percentile, Maddie's pregnancy included weekly maternal fetal medicine (MFM) monitoring and an induction at 36 weeks. Natalie and Maddie walk through the delivery almost minute by minute: an easy vaginal birth for Baby A after only a few pushes, Baby B flipping transverse the moment she had the womb to herself, the attempts to turn her, a cervix that closed back up, and the placenta concern that finally made a C-section the safest call. Then comes the twist - it was Baby A, the vaginally delivered twin, who ended up in the NICU on CPAP, while Baby B stayed right with mom. The conversation also gets into recovering from a vaginal birth and major abdominal surgery at the same time, the empowerment of being given the choice to try for a vaginal delivery, and Nat's "use your BRAIN" framework (Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, Nothing) for making decisions in the moment. Maddie's biggest takeaway: if it happens, it happens - you figure it out one day at a time, and you'll have a pretty cool story to tell. This episode is a reassuring, myth-busting conversation for any twin parent who feels anxious about the possibility of a double whammy delivery. EPISODE THEMES
St. John Ambulance is one of Canada's oldest charitable organizations. While many people know them for first aid and CPR training, they do so much more. This week, Tee is joined by Jodi Scott, co-founder and CEO of Green Goo, a plant-based first aid and herbal wellness company dedicated to helping people reduce unnecessary chemical exposure in their everyday lives. With a master's degree in health psychology and more than two decades of experience in health and wellness, Jodi combines her passion for holistic health, herbal medicine, and consumer education to empower individuals to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. Jodi shares the story behind Green Goo's creation, explaining how she discovered that many of the products sitting in her medicine cabinet contained synthetic ingredients she no longer felt comfortable using on herself or her future child. Alongside her sister, an herbalist and midwife, she began formulating herbal remedies using whole-plant ingredients grown in their own backyard. Their mission was simple: create effective first aid solutions that work with the body's natural healing processes while eliminating unnecessary chemicals, preservatives, and endocrine-disrupting ingredients commonly found in conventional products. Tee and Jodi explore the growing concerns surrounding chemical exposure, endocrine disruptors, synthetic fragrances, and the cumulative impact of personal care products on overall health. They discuss how the Industrial Revolution transformed the products we use every day, why chronic skin conditions and inflammation are becoming increasingly common, and how the skin's connection to the nervous and endocrine systems affects everything from sleep and mood to hormone balance and immune function. Jodi also shares practical advice for reducing toxic load through simple product swaps, rebuilding the skin's natural barrier, and embracing the healing power of plant-based ingredients. In this episode of the Twiniversity Podcast, Natalie talks with Christy-Faith, homeschool advocate, author of Homeschool Rising, education expert, and twin mom, about home-based learning, school-aged twins, and why homeschooling looks very different today than it did a generation ago. Christy-Faith shares her own path to motherhood, including secondary infertility, IVF, fraternal twin girls, a surprise fourth baby, and the hard reality of parenting twins through the early years. She also opens up about her professional background in education, including running a learning intervention and tutoring center in Los Angeles before eventually choosing home education for her own family. Natalie and Christy-Faith talk honestly about the fears many parents have around homeschooling - socialization, academics, family support, whether it is “too weird,” and whether parents are qualified to do it. Christy explains why she prefers the term home-based education, because modern homeschooling can include co-ops, live online classes, outside teachers, homeschool pods, interest-led learning, and a strong community. The conversation also explores what happens when school is not working for your child. Natalie shares her own regrets about not exploring more flexible school options when her twins were younger, including the feeling that her kids were on a “runaway horse” in a system that did not always fit who they were. This episode is a validating and thought-provoking conversation for twin parents who are questioning the traditional school path, wondering what options exist, or simply wanting permission to ask: Is there another way to educate my kids? What to listen for:“Everything I knew about my dog that I thought was true a week ago is no longer true. I have to reset my baseline and go, ‘Who are you today?'”Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, pick up the conversation with Joy Brenner of K9 Medic. This time, they're talking about turning everyday crate time into deliberate heat acclimation.Joy explains that many handlers keep cars too cold, creating a dangerous temperature “delta” that leaves dogs physiologically unprepared for field work. Instead, she programs her dog Storm by running the car just below panting level during downtime, shrinking that gap and building real biological tolerance. This is exactly what military and kennel dogs get by living outside.High-fidelity monitoring makes it safe.Cheap baby cameras with temperature readouts and night vision let handlers watch remotely and check every 20 minutes during high-risk windows (right after work or when AC fails) because “temperature has momentum” and cars remain a leading cause of preventable heat death. They discuss crate fans, breathable pads, reflective car covers, and the limited but situational value of cooling vests (ask your dog). Another practical tip is to do two-minute “t-checks” (transitions checks) at every car entry, with copious water and paw inspections.Whether traveling from Iowa's sweaty season to mountain fires or simply switching seasons, it's important to reset baselines daily and support the dog you actually have today. In this episode of the Twiniversity Podcast, Natalie talks with Laura Liepold, a registered dietician and twin mom, about premature twins, NICU life, and the reality of feeding babies who arrive much earlier than expected. Laura shares how her identical twin boys were born at 29 weeks and 4 days after signs of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, also known as TTTS, appeared suddenly during a routine appointment. What followed was an urgent C-section and a long NICU stay - 63 days for one twin and 86 days for the other. Natalie and Laura dive into what NICU feeding can really look like, from pumping and feeding tubes to fortified breast milk, bottles, triple feeding, and thickened liquids. Laura explains how her background as a registered dietician helped her understand the medical side, but nothing could fully prepare her for experiencing it as a mom. The conversation also explores the emotional weight of feeding premature twins - wanting to breastfeed directly, realizing bottles were working better, learning sideline feeding, managing different calorie recipes, and eventually choosing to exclusively pump for the first year. This episode is a practical and validating conversation about NICU survival, preemie feeding, and learning to adapt when your birth and feeding journey looks nothing like the plan. EPISODE THEMES
What to listen for:“At the end of the day, taking care of our dogs is everyone's job.”Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, talk with Joy Brenner of K9 Medic about looking at canine first aid not just from the perspective of flashy trauma response, but that of the quiet, daily work of truly knowing your dog.Joy, who began in human wilderness and tactical medicine, built K9 Medic to teach handlers, medics, and even surgeons pre-hospital care tailored to real field conditions.High-fidelity mannequins like K9 Hero and Diesel train teams on military-identified killers such as tension pneumothorax, but Joy repeatedly returns to the bigger truth: heat, not bullets or dramatic wounds, is the top preventable cause of death for every dog, whether tactical, SAR, sport, or pet.Her Handler 2.0 program trains handlers in “dog speak”: reading baselines, scaling panting, tracking work/rest cycles, and spotting when a dog is no longer compensating. They bust old myths (alcohol pads, ice-pack vasoconstriction fears, over-cooling shock) and stress rapid cooling to skin level while stopping just above normal, so temperature momentum carries the dog safely home.Structured observation prevents emergencies, improves performance, and turns both handlers and medics into better advocates, because taking care of our dogs is everyone's job! In this episode of the Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States podcast, hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman sit down with a guest whose life mission sits at the intersection of high-stakes offshore sailing and cutting-edge brain science. Phil Haydon is a retired neuroscientist who has turned his personal battle with a hidden disability into a global movement called Sail For Epilepsy.Phil shares his deeply personal journey, which began at the age of 15 when a head injury led to a lifelong diagnosis of epilepsy. Despite the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges, Phil rose to the top of the scientific community. Now, he is using the platform of offshore sailing to "give back" to a community that often suffers in silence due to deep-seated social stigma. The conversation covers the staggering reality of the condition: 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime, and 1 in 10 will experience a seizure. Phil explains the biological nature of epilepsy—as an alteration in the brain's electrical activity—while highlighting famous figures like Danny Glover and NFL quarterback Justin Fields who live with the condition. Most importantly, Phil provides a masterclass on the "why" and "how" of seizure first aid, proving that with the right education, we can build a world where people with epilepsy can live full, uninhibited lives.Time-Stamped Chapters00:23 – Introduction: Sailing and Cruising the East Coast with Bela Musits & Mike Wasserman.00:41 – Introducing Phil Haydon: Neuroscientist and Founder of Sail For Epilepsy.01:14 – The impact of epilepsy on families and personal life.01:58 – Reducing the stigma: Making the world a better place through conversation.02:40 – "What do you do?" Most of us have gotten up on a Monday morning and thought: I simply cannot do this today. Our job is grinding us down in that slow, invisible way that work does when we're not managing it well. Psychotherapist, author, and podcast host Guy Winch has spent his career sitting with people who have experienced this for a passel of reasons from sabotaging coworkers to unrealistic goals. His new book Mind Over Grind is a practical, science-backed guide to surviving your job—even when it really, truly sucks. In this episode, Caitlin and Guy dig into why so many of us experience our jobs as far more stressful than they objectively need to be, what the Goldilocks zone of stress actually looks like, and how to catch yourself before you blow past it. Guy also speaks candidly about his own early burnout and the slow, identity-shifting work it took to come back from it—including why your Netflix queue might not be doing what you think it's doing when it comes to real recovery. If you feel an unusual ache in your foot during marathon or triathlon training, you might worry that you have a stress fracture. But many runners actually develop a stress reaction before a true stress fracture occurs. The problem is that runners often ignore the early warning signs. They experiment with shorter runs, slower workouts, or simply hope the discomfort goes away. In this episode of the Doc On The Run Podcast, Dr. Christopher Segler explains three critical first aid steps runners should take immediately when they suspect a stress reaction in the foot. You'll learn: • Why stress reactions and stress fractures are closely related • Why runners often waste valuable training time by “negotiating with themselves” about the pain • The importance of tracking injury severity • How comparing photos of your feet can reveal subtle swelling or bruising • Why reducing stress on the bone is essential to prevent worsening injury If you act quickly and manage the injury correctly, you may be able to calm the stress reaction down while maintaining your running fitness.

This episode starts with TikTok's updated Terms of Service, specifically the part where apps want to know where you are at all times, and quickly spirals into a much bigger question: did we accidentally sign up for the surveillance state… or was it always inevitable? Kristin and I debate privacy, inevitability, pessimism, preparedness, and whether refusing to participate actually protects you, or just makes life harder. Somewhere in there, we revisit COVID lockdown memories, the great toilet paper shortage, and why Kristin still believes in go-bags… everywhere. Then things get personal. We talk about Milo, our very large, very inbred standard poodle, and his recurring seizures. I do what every human doctor does best: Google outside my scope, panic quietly, and admit I don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to dogs. We walk through idiopathic epilepsy, toxins, brain issues, genetics, and the complicated question of when a dog actually needs lifelong seizure medication. Finally, we crack open First Aid and land on Ehlers-Danlos syndrome — collagen, hypermobility, bruising, joint issues, blood vessels, aneurysm anxiety, and what it's like to live with a genetic condition that medicine still doesn't fully understand. It's nerdy, personal, and surprisingly validating. Takeaways: Digital Privacy Isn't Theoretical: Location tracking, data collection, and why opting out isn't always realistic. Preparedness vs Panic: Go-bags, pessimism, and how couples balance very different risk tolerances. Dog Seizures Are Terrifying: Idiopathic epilepsy is common, but deciding when to treat isn't simple. Pet Insurance Confusion: Why even doctors don't know what's actually worth paying for. Ehlers-Danlos Reality: Collagen types, hypermobility, bruising, and living with a condition medicine still struggles to define. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! On this episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast, Pop editor Sara Spruch-Feiner is joined by Catherine D'Aragon, CEO of First Aid Beauty, to discuss the brand's recent rebrand — its first in its near-20-year lifespan — and its decision to partner with Team USA ahead of the Winter Olympics. The conversation comes at a time when beauty brands are increasingly showing up at the Olympics — from athlete partnerships and product seeding (First Aid gifted all Team USA members) to behind-the-scenes content and performance-focused skin care. Brands including Fenty Beauty, L'Oréal Paris and Glossier have previously activated around the Olympics, as has First Aid Beauty's parent company, Procter & Gamble. Procter & Gamble also owns Gillette Venus, which is sponsoring U.S. Figure Skating athletes Alysa Liu, Isabeau Levito, and Starr Andrews. The discussion also explores why beauty brands are increasingly turning to athletes, how First Aid Beauty is positioning itself around simplicity and skin "support" in a crowded skin-care market, and how the brand plans to translate a global sporting moment into long-term relevance.

On this episode of Vitality Radio, Jared is joined once again by homeopathic consultant Amanda Kotter of Elemental Health to demystify one of the most misunderstood natural medicine systems: homeopathy—specifically how it's used safely and effectively with children. Parents often feel unsure about homeopathic remedies because of unfamiliar names, unusual potencies, and misconceptions about strength and safety. In this conversation, Jared and Amanda simplify the process by walking through a short list of essential remedies every parent should understand. You'll learn when and why remedies like Ferrum Phos, Mag Phos, Aconite, Chamomilla, and Arnica are commonly used for kids, how to think about potency without getting overwhelmed, and why homeopathy is often a gentle first step rather than a last resort. This episode is practical, approachable, and designed to help parents feel confident using homeopathy in real life. This episode starts with the important questions, like whether I'm emotionally prepared to return to my ancestral homeland of Big Bend National Park, and whether Kristin would rather share a cabin with a venomous snake or a tarantula. From there, things take a turn into real life: a med student driving for Uber and Lyft just to make ends meet. That story opens up a bigger conversation about medical school debt, why med students somehow aren't paid anything, and how it makes zero sense that people training to become doctors are expected to survive without income, or time to work. Then we crack open First Aid and let Kristin pick our fate. That leads us into adult primary brain tumors, specifically meningiomas and hemangioblastomas, including why meningiomas can be sneaky, asymptomatic, and surprisingly common, and how hemangioblastomas connect to Von Hippel–Lindau disease and renal cell carcinoma. Takeaways: Big Bend Reality Check — Cabins, snakes, tarantulas, scorpions, and unresolved marital fear negotiations. Med Student Money Math — Why driving Uber during medical school should not be the solution. Meningiomas Explained — Common, usually benign, often asymptomatic… until they're not. Hemangioblastomas & VHL — Rare brain tumors tied to a genetic syndrome and kidney cancer. Still Googling Medicine — A reminder that even doctors sometimes stare at First Aid wondering where their tuition money went. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! EASTERN BROWN SNAKE ATTACKS AND CRITICAL FIRST AID Colleague Jeremy Zakis. Zakis details two recent attacks by venomous Eastern Brown snakes seeking shelter from the heat. He describes an incident in Morton National Park where a hiker stepped on a snake that subsequently lunged and bit his wife, requiring a helicopter rescue.
