We’re back with a fresh AF #damngoods episode! First up, there’s so.much.makeup news this season… We review the hotly-anticipated Rare Beauty collection by Selena Gomez, answering the question on everyone’s minds: does the foundation boasting 48 shades hold its own, or is it merely a Fenty-wannabe? Next, we weigh in on highlights from the brand new Byredo Makeup collection, a fire collab between the design-y fragrance house and badass makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench. We also introduce you to a hurricane-proof tubing mascara, a consciously-crafted tinted moisturizer ideal for last minute Zoom meetings, and a deeply pigmented tinted balm designed to give you that coveted, Snow White-meets-the-witch lip and cheek stain vibe. A Black-owned lipstick brand that’s partnered with Michelle Obama to get you to vote, the perf transitional cleanser that promises not to dry you out, and first impressions of the latest skincare gadget to get on your Black Friday wish list early – consider this your ultimate Quart-What? fall beauty haul. When you are expressing gratitude these days, are you appropriately prayer-hand-emoji for video streaming (and, frankly, the streaming wars that are keeping us so deep in good content)? We’re taking this week’s ep as an opportunity to really lay our thanks on thick—for The Fight, I May Destroy You, Shrill, and Love on the Spectrum specifically. Light spoilers in some spots (and possibly too much excitement in others).   The linkage:   First things first: boiled potatoes!! With seafood, in a niçoise salad, and as leftovers...which gets you halfway to fried or roasted potatoes like Julia Turshen’s Kinda Sorta Patatas Bravas or these crispy roasted potatoes with burrata.   Also, congrats to white potatoes on joining the Whole30 club. Sorry the announcement of this news didn’t feature a more flattering photo of you all.   Ok, second things second: our watch list. The Fight available for rent on various platforms, I May Destroy You on HBO Max, Shrill (Season 2 specifically) on Hulu, and Love on the Spectrum on Netflix.    Some further reading around Love on the Spectrum: a Time review by Sarah Kurchak, an article from The Cut that runs through the criticisms, and a piece from the Los Angeles Times that gets into the filming behind-the-scenes.   What else should we be watching? Tell us at @athingortwohq or 833-632-5463.    If you haven’t signed up for our Secret Menu yet, well, join us!   Give Michelle Obama’s new Spotify podcast a listen. This month, we read The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. This the story of identical twin sisters (and their daughters) spanning the fifties through the nineties. Desiree and Stella are inseparable growing up in the fictional light-skinned Black town of Mallard, Louisiana during the fifties in the Jim Crow-era south. When they are 16, they run away together to New Orleans. From there, their lives take completely different turns. Desiree marries a dark-skinned man and returns home to raise her daughter in Mallard, while Stella goes on to pass for white - hiding her identity and past from her new family. The book follows the girls’ stories and their daughters, who eventually end up meeting via a chance encounter. We discuss colorism, the theme of running away throughout the book, our interpretations of the title, and our mixed reviews on the ending. Although this book has been in the works for 4 years, its release couldn’t be more timely, as the story has such pointed views about race and privilege. We can’t wait to hear what you think of the book! It’s possible you’ve been consuming content by Kim France for thirty-ish years, and we’re here to talk about all of it (including her new podcast—which, have you listened?!). Also, not to be the people who talk about our meditation experiences, but we kind of can’t shut up about this one time, ok?   The linkage:   Hit up the Sky Ting yoga classes taught by Marisa Meltzer (in NYC) that we loved.   Check out Kim France’s podcast, which she co-hosts with Tally Abecassis, called Everything Is Fine and her fashion ‘n shopping blog Girls of a Certain Age. Both are ideal for women over 40 and the over-40-curious.   How Sassy Changed My Live, which the very same Marisa Meltzer co-authored with Kara Jesella, is itself iconic at this point.   Kim goes deep on her creative partnership with Andrea Linett while running Lucky in our book Work Wife.   For a preview of the book Kim is writing, read her Medium essays about the beautiful house that didn’t make for a beautiful life and depression at the Condé Nast holiday lunch. Oh, and read her essays on vanity and dressing your age for The Cut while you’re at it.   Speaking of editors in chief, Dan Peres (of Details) just released As Needed for Pain, and this NYT story about that whole late-nineties/early-aughts magazine era is pretty juicy.   Kim shops The RealReal (join the club!), Warm, and Maria Cornejo.   Shout out to the magazine Gossamer, which is for people who also smoke weed.   Two friends we lost much too soon: David Rakoff and Jason Polan.   Bring on that menopause content. See: Darcy Steinke’s book Flash Count Diary, Party Girl, this Broad City scene, and this Fleabag one.    You wanna talk about beauty stuff? Excellent! Kim is very into Drunk Elephant, SK-II Pitera Facial Treatment Masks, Tatcha The Silk Canvas Protective Primer, and Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. For a red lip, she’s all about Kosas in Royal, Lipstick Queen, and those Nars Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencils.    Kim’s watching Cheer, Fleabag, Killing Eve, The Crown, Victoria and reading Why We Can’t Sleep by Ada Calhoun, Ninety-Nine Glimpses of Princess Margaret, and (as always) Go Fug Yourself.   Produced by Dear Media

First Day Back returns this season with the story of Jason Weems, one of Baltimore’s biggest comedians. Jason’s life changed on May 3, 2017 when just minutes into a set, he had a severe asthma attack. It was so bad, his heart stopped. Sixteen hours later, he was barely alive, recovering in a Philadelphia hospital. This season on First Day Back, host Tally Abecassis follows Jason as he tries to come back…from death. He wants to keep doing comedy— the stage is where he’s always felt the most alive. But now it’s a place of real trauma. Can Jason Weems transform the worst thing that ever happened to him in to the event that changes his life? Listen to the trailer now and subscribe on Stitcher, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.
