The forecast was for rain all day but after a period of a few hours with none I headed to Flatford. The clouds are great today and much more Constablesque with a wide variety of greys and shapes. As I was setting up there was some great interaction between some Song Thrushes, and some juvenile Moorhens on the water. Some sightseers taking their photo with the Mill in the background, a Song Thrush again, a lady going past on her mobility scooter, restarting the recording because my alarm went off loudly and stopped the recording! Weird as I thought that the sound must have been coming from someone else's phone before I realised it was from mine! Bees in the Comfrey, a Cuckoo, a couple take a photo, ask me what I was recording and then left straight away, then they came back and asked me if they could see Willy Lott's House from this side of the river, a short rain shower with large drops, so I protect my kit with my cap and a cloth (well prepared!), a lad walking by with his hands in his pockets, the birds stopped singing after the ran, thunder, and now a Blackbird, the Cuckoo again as the wind picks up, the feeling that it's going to lash it down, a man with 2 black Labradors walking past whilst looking at his phone the whole time, a hoverfly by the mic, a Moorhen, precipitation being blow from the willow trees above me, I'm on the edge of my seat with anticipation as the wind gusts and the thunder rolls around but the rain holds off, there are no hoards of tourists now as there were last week in the blazing sunshine (so I heard on various platforms), just crows, the storm is moving northward, swathes of cloud, gusts of wind bending the trees, pockets of blue sky now appear between the cloud, lightning to the west, ten seconds away, a Mallard on the mill pond, small spits of rain return as a man power walks past, we exchange nods, a man smoking a cigarette at the back of the Field Studies Centre looking over curiously, the same building that they said was out of bounds and as such I couldn't record from there, wind ripples and rain drops on the water surface, three Magpies landing on the path to forage, there is two minutes to go until the hour is up and the rain is getting heavier, a jogger, the Mallard lands on the wall and stretches out its wings, several times, still some distant thunder and gusts in the trees but fading now, the Magpies chatter in the trees, the Cuckoo returns.

On this week’s show, we’re talking about just how much nesting ducks need help. Mike Buxton from Delta Waterfowl joins the show to talk about how difficult it really is to hatch ducks in the wild between drought, predators, and other factors. Bret talks about the Mallard nest he found in his yard the other day and the predators we’ve seen trying to attack it. Paul Johnson joins us from the boat on the Rainy River to give us the latest on the migration highway, and Joe Henry is back from the Northwest Angle and tells us how fishing was up there and what he learned from the DNR and other stakeholders at the angle last week. In Episode 34 of the Level Line Podcast the Tenkara Angler panelists welcome a truly special guest: Bob Mallard, Executive Director of the Native Fish Coalition (NFC) and one of the most passionate voices in native fish advocacy today.Bob brings a remarkable background to this conversation; 15 years running a Maine fly shop on the Kennebec, hundreds of articles across publications from Fly Fisherman to Outdoor Life, five published books (including Squaretail: The Definitive Guide to Brook Trout and Where to Find Them), and co-founding the Native Fish Coalition, which has grown from a single chapter in Maine to 21 chapters spanning Maine to Arkansas in just a few years. The NFC's mission is simple but powerful: wild native fish, for the sake of the fish, not just for fishing. And as Bob explains in this wide-ranging conversation, that message is resonating with a new generation of anglers who are showing up in big numbers. Mallard nesting at Grizzly Island, the story about CWA's first biologist, and how research, banding, fundraising, and education all took shapeJeff Smith and Carson Odegard sit down with Dr. Bob McLandress—past CWA president and one of the key figures in the organization's early growth—for a look back at how California Waterfowl found its footing. Bob traces his path from Canada and Ducks Unlimited into graduate work under Dennis Raveling at UC Davis, then into CWA in 1985 as the organization's first biologist—not its first employee, as the old story often goes. From there, the conversation moves through the early Grizzly Island mallard nesting work, the discovery of surprisingly high nest densities, the launch of CWA's first major banding efforts, and the way one research project quickly snowballed into fundraising dinners, youth education, development work, and the broader conservation mission the organization carries today.Episode highlightsBob's path from Winnipeg into waterfowl biology, and how early work in Canada helped set the course for his career. The real story behind the long-running myth: Bob was CWA's first biologist, but not its first employee. Why the early Grizzly Island nesting work changed the conversation around California mallards. How CWA's first banding efforts got rolling—and how those early permits and projects helped build the program that followed. What early CWA really looked like: volunteer-driven, underfunded, chaotic, and full of people trying to build something that mattered. How one biologist's job quickly turned into fundraising, education, development, and helping define CWA's long-term role in California conservation.

Producer/Host: R.W. Estela Hi, I'm RW Estela: Since 1991, I've been presenting A Word in Edgewise, WERU's longest-running short feature, a veritable almanac of worldly and heavenly happenings, a confluence of 21st-century life in its myriad manifestations, international and domestic, cosmopolitan and rural, often revealing, as the French say, the more things change, the more they stay the same — though not always! Sometimes in addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives, in this age of vagary and ambiguity, when chronological time is punctuated elliptically, things can quickly turn edgy and controversial, as we search for understanding amid our dialectic. Tune in Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. for an exciting journey through space and time with a few notable birthdays thrown in for good measure during A Word in Edgewise . . . About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. When pandemics do not interfere, he does the Triple Crown of Maine open-water ocean swims (Peaks to Portland, Islesboro Crossing, and Nubble Light Challenge) and the Whitewater Downriver Point Series of the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. RW is the father of two and the grandfather of three and lives with his partner Kathleen of 37 years and their two Maine Coons in Orono. Chad sits down solo at the mic to reflect on everything this life has blessed him with. The friendships, the partnerships, the miles, the years of filming and chasing the migration. None of it was forced, and none of it was planned out like that; it just kept building over time. At the center of all of it is something pretty simple... A mallard duck. Hunting really is the thing that brings it all together. It doesn't matter what you do for a living, where you live, how much money you make, or any of the stuff we usually worry about. You get in a duck blind, and all of the outside world's concerns fade away. Everybody's the same out there, and that's what this one is about. In this episode I sit down with Dr. Mike Brasher, Senior Waterfowl Scientist for Ducks Unlimited, for a deep dive into one of the most debated topics in waterfowl hunting right now. Mallard numbers are down, pond counts are below average, and hunters across the country are asking the same question. Should seasons and limits be reduced? Dr. Brasher walks us through the science behind duck population surveys, how breeding population estimates are actually conducted, and how Adaptive Harvest Management (AHM) determines the frameworks for duck seasons in North America. We also discuss the ongoing debate about compensatory vs additive mortality, whether harvest is impacting duck populations, how pond counts affect productivity, and why the current regulatory system still supports liberal seasons despite declining mallard numbers. This conversation covers the full picture of how waterfowl populations are monitored and how hunting regulations are set. Topics covered include: • How duck population surveys are conducted • What the breeding population estimate actually represents • The role of the May pond count • Why habitat drives duck populations • The science behind Adaptive Harvest Management • Compensatory vs additive mortality • Whether harvest impacts duck populations • Why we are still in liberal seasons If you want to better understand how duck populations are managed and what the future of waterfowl seasons may look like, this episode is packed with valuable insight. This episode is a mix of two things. A full recap of a killer Christmas weekend with Stormy Crook and Aiden, and then a real talk discussion on using treats in retriever training. I start with why a simple comment I left on a Facebook video turned into a bigger conversation. The video showed a young pup being sent to a place board using treats, and I explain why I personally avoid treats with average to high drive retrievers. I get into intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, why I want my dog working for the relationship and teamwork, and why I believe that foundation matters later when you are asking a dog to trust you on blinds and fight factors like wind and pressure. I am also going to ask Chris Jobman about this directly on the Flatlander Kennels Podcast, and I am open to being corrected. Before we get to that, I take you through one of my favorite stretches of the year, Christmas break, Mallard season, and the obsessive nature of waterfowl hunting. Then I break down an unforgettable weekend hosting Stormy and Aiden. We hunted hard, dealt with ice, ran the boat where other guys could not, and ended up with back to back three man Mallard limits with a bunch of feet down finishes. It was one of those rare weekends where expectations were low, the hunts were incredible, and everything came together. Wives had a great weekend too, and the new muck room got put to use the way it was meant to be used. Partners Shotty Gear

In this episode I walk through the long term mallard population trends and ask a simple question. Can the average hunter actually feel the effects of this decline. Mallard numbers have dropped from more than eleven million in 2016 to around six and a half million today. I look at the historical highs and lows, compare them to my own data since 2016, and talk about whether the current dip is truly changing the way our hunts unfold or if our success still comes down to weather patterns, decisions, and being in the right place at the right time. I also break down the recent cold snaps, the sudden migration push across the Central Flyway, and how difficult it can be to make good decisions when the shallow marshes freeze solid. I talk about yesterday's frustrating river hunt, why finishing ducks has been so tough this year, what I am seeing from other hunters, and why this season feels so strange. Later in the episode I preview the Patreon hunt giveaway weekend with Captain Casey, Brian H. from the Migration Waterfowl Podcast, and Ben Meyers. I also share early thoughts on planning the spring Patreon float trip and what the next few weeks of December may look like. If you watch on Spotify you can drop comments and share your thoughts on whether declining mallard populations are affecting your hunting. I would love to hear what you think. By late summer, the male Mallard's need for fancy feathers to attract the females has passed. These birds have molted, and their bright feathers are replaced with mottled brown ones. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Finders keepers, losers weepers. Both of these phrases describe fortune and misfortune depending on how you view the discarded, lost, or found item. In 1948, Robert Mallard, a Black World War II veteran, was murdered by a white mob in Toombs County, Georgia. His wife, Amy Mallard, witnessed the attack—and instead of arresting the killers, authorities charged her with his murder. Set in the heart of the Jim Crow South, this episode of Southern Mysteries explores the deeply rooted racism that allowed a lynching to go unpunished while a grieving widow was put on trial. Learn how Amy Mallard found the courage to speak out, and how the national outrage that followed became part of the growing civil rights movement.
