It's time for another composer spotlight on Rhythm Encounter, and this time we're celebrating the works of Hiroki Kikuta. Many RPG fans know his work on the Mana series — particularly Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana — but there's much more to Kikuta than many people know. From a PSone game that never left Japan to his contributions to many indie games today, today's episode digs into the many hats Hiroki Kikuta has worn over the years. We hope you discover new facets to his work as some of us did on this episode! If you want more composer episodes when you are done, check out episodes 108 and 61, where we spotlighted Hitoshi Sakimoto and Yoko Shimomura, respectively.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Patrick Gann, Greg Delmage; Edited by Paul DennisLinks for this episode Valiant Mirror Website Soukaigi - Fire Wire TracklistFiji Block0:08:13 - Where Angel Fear to Tread (Hiroki Kikuta, arr. It's not every day that composers from the VGM world start developing their own games. Andrew Aversa (known to the OCRemix world as Zircon) embarked on that journey years ago and released his first game, Tangledeep. Andrew Luers (otherwise known as OA) decided to join the party and start work on his own game, Flowstone Saga. They both join us this week to talk about their projects, how Impact Gameworks came to be, and the many fascinating aspects of game development.(Direct download)Music:An Evening at The Roost Theme - Originally from Animal Crossing: Wild World, arranged by Will BrueggemannMusic from upcoming game Flowstone SagaAndrew Aversa (Zircon)TwitterWebsiteAndrew Luers (OA)TwitterAn Evening at The Roost:TwitterEmailDiscordiTunesWebsiteAn Evening at The Roost is part of the marcato brothers network!

Tonight we talk about a bunch of things that have been sitting in our list as well as a quick revisit of Anthem and how much difference a week can make. We talk a bit about the various titles coming out for the Switch in the near future and close up with a postmortem of Octopath Traveller. What better way is there to use your modern gaming console than to play old school games? David and Robert look over previous and upcoming titles on the Nintendo Switch that'll be sure to scratch that retro itch. We got monkeys, boxers, and radical ninjas galore! What's not to love? Before that, we jump into the news on the Commodore 64 Mini being a real thing finally. We then get into a pretty deep discussion over the positives and negatives of game ROMs as Nintendo recently went after a couple of hosting sites. Then we close out with official word that Stewart Copeland of The Police will in fact be returning to his gaming claim to fame in Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The Stage of History welcomes a couple of arcade classics with the "beary" lovable Crystal Castles, and classic city destroyer Rampage. Robert then flies off with the rare arcade release Sky Skipper in Obscura. There's also game giveaways for Tangledeep and Garage: Bad Trip that you'll want to get your hands on. No Random Select this week, so we finish off with extra news items on N64 Forsaken making a return, and a Battletoads challenge that had us both impressed! The hot summer doldrums roll on as we ponder games both video and tabletop. This week, we’re joined by local character artist and SCAD alum Val Hawes, here to educate us on roguelikes and more. We gather around the smoldering embers of the once mighty E3 fire to see if there were any announcements we missed, and speak our piece on seasonal game sales, aggressive fandom wikis, and multiple gaming lawsuits. On the game dev front, Will is fast at work on releasing his new game Wobolob; Val talks about her contributions to Team Dogpit’s Red Star Azimuth; Alex’s game, Woodsy, reaches new heights after being showcased on a Markiplier video; and Dylan is busy with Peak housekeeping. Games include Mario Tennis Aces, Overwhelm, Fugl, Wizard of Legend, Tangledeep, Kingdom Death: Monster, Agony, Totally Accurate Battlegrounds, Fallout 3, Hitman, Dusk, Wobolob Classic, and Wobolob. This week, we recover from our illness with a fresh installment of "WHAT I'M PLAYING:" "Remnants of Naezith" (which left me "grappling" with mixed feelings), "Descenders," (an early access title that could - one day - become the all-time champeen of downhill BMX biking), and a less-coughing description of the beguiling evil that is "Tangledeep." www.twitch.tv/skookiesprite www.bestlinuxgames.com
As tradition holds, our midweek observance of the "games we have been a-playin'" opens with some new hotness, but also some tried and true entries. LeGrande scores hits with Horizon Zero Dawn, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, and Monster Hunter World. Jeremy orbits endlessly with Spaceplan and plumbs the depths (or is it heights?) with roguelike Tangledeep. Dale fights his way closer to victory with XCOM Enemy Unknown, and flouts his mommy instinct by tossing babies in Offspring Fling.
