There is SO much to talk about with Chrono Cross. It's a very special game, and we hope that you feel the same...at least about these episodes. Hope you love the show today. You play as a boy and his dog, travelling through weird worlds and trying to find your way back home. The concept of the game is fantastic, and it does a lot of stuff well, but I don't know if it really does anything great. And SNES RPGs have a lot of great in them.Captain N of the Retrotopia podcast joins me this week to break down the world of Evermore, and we spent over an hour diving into the seedy (secret) underbelly of the world of Evermore. And before we get save our dog, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week someone asks if gaming has become a luxury hobby that just isn't accessible to everyone. If I could go back to RTG #1, what advice would I give myself? And is there a series I slept on for way too long??Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Majora's Mask.

The mitochondria do all the talking this week on Still Loading. Episode 2 of this year's Backlog Month features a game very different from last week's. Backlog month this year is RPG heavy and one of those RPGs we are looking at is Live A Live. Live A Live is an RPG from Square Enix that originally released back in 1994 for the Super Famicom but was later given a remake and published world wide in 2023. Joining to chat about the may lives experienced in this game is the Twitch streamer Happy Bear! Happy and I had a great conversation about our experiences with this game, why the battle system is pretty awesome, why the end of the game probably sucks and also the logisitics of farting in imperial China. "It will only cost you your life, and you got that for free!" A notable cult classic, an idiosyncratic game, a commercial failure and a fan favourite. Landing at a formative time for the JRPG genre in the west, EarthBound (Mother 2: G?gu no Gyakush? / Giygas Strikes Back) loomed very large over the gaming landscape sliding between Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, two of SquareSoft's biggest hitters from a relatively unknown studio. Resident Evil changed everything. When originally released in 1996, what was once a niche genre for enthusiasts was now a blockbuster staple in every second home. All of a sudden people were craving zombies, horrifying monsters and disturbing themes. It was so popular that Square, far more known for its more traditional JRPGs, decided to throw its hat in the ring and make Parasite Eve.On the surface, the game appeared to be textbook survival horror. But dig a little deeper and you could see that Square was unable to escape its roots. Turn based mode happened in a sphere similar to Vagrant Story, upgrades were plentiful and incremental, and the storytelling had more cutscenes than gameplay at least in the early stages. Thematically this was still horrifying…but under the hood was a different story. Was this blend of genres ultimately successful, giving survival horror a fresh new perspective? Or is it impossible to reconcile grim resources management with the power fantasy that RPGS almost always offer? On this episode, we discuss:StoryHow does Parasite Eve use real world science to lend an air of credibility to the horrific changes that are happening all over Manhattan? Does it execute the smaller details well even if the larger picture is a bit silly at times?CombatHow enjoyable is the moment to moment real time combat of Parasite Eve? The game requires you to dodge attacks, and pick the best moment to strike. Is this too simplistic or does it work well?ProgressionHow do the weapon and armour upgrades work in Parasite Eve? Does it provide the player with a satisfying sense of progression, or is it all just a confusing mess?We answer these questions and many more on the 132nd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherParasite Eve OST: Yoko Shinomura—What crazy weapon upgrade paths do you like to use? Is the NG+ mode worth playing? How is Parasite Eve 2 different from the original? Console Launch Blues, Greens, and Reds. The Six-Button Samurai and @GameAgentET (OGiH) delve into their own experiences on either side of the pond in trying to lock down a Nintendo Switch 2, but also swerve pretty hard into the history of console launches, which once upon a time, had ZERO hype, they just managed to show up at a Toys 'R' Us nearby. We also discuss a simultaneous playthrough of a Squaresoft classic that had eluded both of us in Secret of Mana, and another new Jeff Minter joint, with his wildly frenetic and colorful style now gracing a remake of Atari's I, Robot. TCW Podcast Episode 215 - Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers. For some, it was the first time they really connected with a JRPG. For others, it marked the transition from pixel art games to 3D gaming. Final Fantasy VII owes much to the storytelling work of its predecessor, Final Fantasy VI, led by Yoshinori Kitase. Kitase used his love of filmmaking to add an artistic flair to games, improving on the static scenes most games relied on. With Final Fantasy VII, Kitase aimed to overcome hardware limitations in storytelling. This desire to push beyond hardware constraints also led SquareSoft to break ties with Nintendo and join Sony with their new PlayStation. The marketing of FF VII in the West as more than just an RPG helped it become the first Final Fantasy game to sell more in the West than in Japan, thereby cementing JRPGs in the public's mind. It's-a-us, the Rhythm Encounter crew! With the impending launch of the remaster for the beloved sequel, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, we decided it was high time to talk about Mario's illustrious RPG career. Starting with 1996's Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and extending through the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games, the idea of a Mario-based RPG went from an unheard of collaboration between Nintendo and then-Squaresoft to multiple styles of games across several generations of consoles. I heard from my uncle who works at Nintendo that the remake of Chrono Trigger will be animated by Studio Ghibli and have Spider-Man as an unlockable character.
Nintendo (Partner) Direct! Elden Ring DLC! Helldivers 2 queue campers! This episode of Remap Radio has it all, with Rob, Janet, Patrick, and Cado working through their feelings on this week's many announcements, alongside spicy speculation about Nintendo's next console. Elsewhere, Patrick and Janet have spent dozens of hours in Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and have come out the other side realizing they'll, uh, be spending a lot of time in this world. We also touch on The New York Times hilariously “spoiling” a major moment in the Squaresoft classic.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Final Fantasy IX Part Fourteen: Pandemonium Post Show Recaps returns to Final Fantasy forever! We just don't know how to quit Final Fantasy at PSR and this time around Brooklyn Zed (@hardrockhope) is reuniting with Adam H (@pianomanadam1) to (finally) cover the beloved Final Fantasy IX. Released by SquareSoft in 2000, FFIX follows the adventure […]
For the Brothers Moriarty, Final Fantasy IV -- or Final Fantasy II, as we once knew it on SNES way back when -- is a uniquely nostalgic product. Upon its release in the west, we played the game together, often with me (Colin) sneaking into Dagan's room after I was 'put to bed' so I could watch him conquer the tale. Thus, we eagerly revisit this all-time JRPG classic in KnockBack style, but it's not the first time we've done so. Long-time listeners will recall that one of the very first KB offerings in 2018 was FFIV (Episode 16, in fact). But our show today is a lot different than it was then, and frankly, this is a far deeper and more comprehensive look at Squaresoft's classic than the earlier podcast, as we've both come off a fresh playthrough via the Pixel Remaster. Cecil's tale of darkness-to-light -- and the many stories of the lovable cast that surround him -- helped catapult an entire genre into the hearts of gamers worldwide. Some would even argue IV is the best Final Fantasy, full-stop. We think you could easily make that argument, yes, but such a deep topic deserves much more nuance. Three hours' worth, in fact. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
As we close the book on the latest batch of 101s, we turn our attention to Squaresoft's classic, Final Fantasy Tactics. Patrick joins Cado to discuss playing the game live on stream the last few months, and, among other things, tries to understand why people hate Algus so much. The two also discuss why Final Fantasy Tactics is so revered among Final Fantasy and non-Final Fantasy fans alike, whether the “updated” localization is actually any better, and much more.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
