We're crawling on all fours back into the void, where we discuss whatever topics manifest into our brains. Aaron and Gerry are joined by Twitch streamer Sl0nk0b0mb to discuss things like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, bad experiences in movie theaters, and lots and lots of SNES nostalgia. This Podcast Is Super Scope-Compatible. [School of Everything Else 2025] One of the most beloved 90s RPGs, and one of the few on Super Nintendo that was released in the UK. So, while I envied Americans for getting Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV and VI, Earthbound and Breath of Fire, THIS ONE was my first actual big console RPG. And it has problems; real playability issues that make it hard to recommend for everyone in the 20s. You'll find Mana fans who say that these don't matter, but they absolutely do. A fine comparison I came upon while mulling this one over was Breath of the Wild. Absolutely gorgeous, engrossing you in a luscious world dominated by fertile nature, but Link's swords breaking after half a dozen battles are not going to make the game more fun and engaging for everyone. And yet, there IS that immersion, there is the overwhelming emotional response that Mana fans have to the music and art style, and there's the undeniably satisfying THWACK of the combat. So, come on a journey with us and the three intrepid adventuring kids, Primm, Popoi and Randi, and decide whether playing Secret of Mana is right for you.
This week we kick off with some retro news in the MiSter FPGA world and the N64 Core, followed by the YUZU drama - then we jump into our topic as we highlight some hidden gems and compare them to similar well known games in the 16 Bit era of RPGs. From Secret of Mana and Earthbound - to Arcana and Twisted Tales of Spike McFang - This is Retro Rehab.CREDITS Aaron

We all have origin stories about how we got into RPGs (several of us shared them almost six years ago in this feature!), so today our panel discusses music origins — what RPGs attuned us to the RPG music scene or otherwise elevated our senses and made us take notice. For some of us, this dates back to the days of the NES, and sometimes our awakening happened during the days of the GameCube. Whenever these songs hail from, they each hold a special place in our hearts.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Wes Iliff, Gio Castillo, Rob White; Edited by Paul DennisWarm Beginnings0:05:01 - Diddle's Organ (Yoko Shimomura) - Legend of Mana0:05:53 - Godot - The Fragrance of Darkness; That is Coffee (Noriyuki Iwadare) - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials & Tribulations16-Bit Vibes0:25:35 - Kids Run Through the City (FFPR ver.) Here is a game that I played as a child, but always held a place in my heart, Secret of Mana. An Action RPG that did something unique on the SNES, gave us a 3 player RPG. Its a one of kind. Also was the first game titled Mana that we got here in the west. I am joined by a few friends who also love this title. We reflect on memory lane as we dive deep into Secret of Mana, come listen to what we thought. Starring Mike Albertin, Rohn Huntone, Kyle Gorman, and Blake Anglin. On the latest episode of Bring the Pain, I have a special guest on that is the host of a VGM podcast. RE_VGM TO be exact, and the host's name is Martyrus. I extend a warm welcome to him as we embark on a journey into the world of video game music. Hear our thoughts about many popular tracks, as we get to know each other since this is our first time podcasting together. It truly was great to sit down and talk to Martyrus about what him and so many other VGM podcasters go through as they create these lists. Every one of them have a unique approach to how they handle their shows. From the research they do, to finally putting the set list together, they all give us insight with knowledge into a world that has no flaws. The world of video game music.

It's time for another composer spotlight on Rhythm Encounter, and this time we're celebrating the works of Hiroki Kikuta. Many RPG fans know his work on the Mana series — particularly Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana — but there's much more to Kikuta than many people know. From a PSone game that never left Japan to his contributions to many indie games today, today's episode digs into the many hats Hiroki Kikuta has worn over the years. We hope you discover new facets to his work as some of us did on this episode! If you want more composer episodes when you are done, check out episodes 108 and 61, where we spotlighted Hitoshi Sakimoto and Yoko Shimomura, respectively.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff, Patrick Gann, Greg Delmage; Edited by Paul DennisLinks for this episode Valiant Mirror Website Soukaigi - Fire Wire TracklistFiji Block0:08:13 - Where Angel Fear to Tread (Hiroki Kikuta, arr.
To the dungeon with you! But don't worry, we'll be there with you. Dungeons are a staple of most RPGs, and good music can elevate the experience of any dungeon, even the dreaded sewers. Why we have never had a dungeon-specific episode before now, we couldn't tell you, so today we make up for it, featuring games dating back as far as 1988 all the way to just last month (and six other songs in between)! Hey everyone! Chase and Emmy are back to discuss ants and rpgs. First up is the Maxis game SimAnt, another PC sim port. Emmy has a lot of love for this game, but Chase isn't a huge fan of bugs. Give this one a listen and find out if Emmy's nostalgia will win the day over Chase's entomophobia. Then we have two games all about magic. The first is a traditional RPG called Paladin's Quest. It's certainly not one of the better known SNES RPGs. Is there a reason for that, or is Paladin's Quest a hidden gem? Finally, it's time to talk about Secret of Mana and it's well-documented troubled development.

New episodes broadcast live on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/sotdcast Malkovich. Malkovich. Oh, hello there! Good malkovich to you, and welcome to our humble little podcast. Chris has been mildly peeved by some bothersome butterflies in FFX, leading onto a discussion of hitting the 'Why am I still doing this?" wall in gaming. From there the guys mash their way through Demon's Souls, the Secret Of Mana remaster and Monster Hunter World - an epic safari/slaughter where you'll need armour and pants. But only pants fashioned from the finest flamesacks of (now) extinct beastiesauruses. Tom has some Netflix feedback that devolves into fawning over teary silverback Captain Adama - has he mentioned that he really likes Battlestar Galactica? This week's focus is of course Being John Malkovich - something a lot of the characters in this movie get the opportunity to do after John Cusack finds a portal on his bizarre office floor. After a brief overview of the plot, the guys cannot help but focus on that infamous scene and that damned sexy Malkovich on the piano. A brief Chris dream interlude gives way to a fairly (for us) smart conversation on representation in the movie - we sound intelligent, but we're also hard nuts and we will fight Flat Earthers IRL. It doesn't take a genius though, to know that you should never ever Malkovich a Malkovich - it doesn't end well. Mel plays Secret of Mana for the first time. Zoltan is a long time fan of the game. They discuss their experiences.
Dave calls Jay to discuss the unique soundscape of Secret Of Mana, and how composer Hiroki Kikuta set out to make a game soundtrack that was truly unlike any other. Dave points out how the soundtrack, in many ways, resembles a prog-rock album with its extremely specific instrument samples custom-made by Kikuta himself, and it's extraordinarily unusual use of rhythm and unexpected time signatures. Ultimately, Dave demonstrates how all of these distinctive elements come together in the game's battle music, Danger, in a thrilling manner that strikes a careful balance between order and chaos.

– Interludio musical: Jane's Adiction – Stop!
