Welcome for this special edition of the Mindfulnews Podcast and on today's episode we speak with Podcast host, Mindfulness leader and mentor, Ted Meissner. Ted has been hosting one of the most prolific and amazing podcasts on Mindfulness and related topics for many years. We turn the tables on Ted and put him in the hot seat where we dig into his background in biology and his fondness of evolutionary theory, his incredible podcast ‘the present moment' with over 166 episodes and his other Secular Buddhist podcast. We talk about his path to becoming a Mindfulness teacher, the benefits of Mindfulness and how we would describe it to Klingons or Vulcans? What is burn out? What is mindfulness? and what matters most to Ted. We also have a fun debate about the enthusiasm of mindfulness vs the science (has it caught up with the enthusiasm?) This Turn takes us deep, deep down into the deep dark world of ideology to show why it's such a fundamental concept for understanding ourselves and the world, and the entanglement between the two, in an articulation of the concept of interdependence that rarely gets explored by Buddhists or spiritual folks alike. Three Europeans will help us on our way and after regular requests, I provide some practice tips, a new Bodhisattva vow and more. Though practise tips are actually present throughout and the more discerning listener will see just how much gold dust and nuggets can be sifted from this enduring topic: too often dismissed or merely articulated in its grossest form. If it’s all too much, you might want to listen in more than one sitting and ponder the goods served up by these great thinkers and my own humble attempt to make their ideas as relevant and contemporary as possible to practitioners like you, and why not, if needed, wash it all down with a nice cup of Ted Meissner tea. Menu of the Day: Great Feast Specials 01. Overview of the themes that ideology forces us to confront. 02. Antonio Gramsci; ideas that capture populations and Buddhist groups, cultural hegemony...interdependence of the underappreciated kind. 03. Antoine Destutt de Tracy: coining ideology, the science of ideas, the sensual nature of ideas, ideaophobes...feelings are wrapped in ideology (who would’ve thought it). 04. Louis Althusser: identification, capture, the naturalness of it all...how ideology is in your subjective experience and on your meditation cushion. 05. Practise tips: entering the Great Feast, the bodhisattva vow...committing to the world beyond our dreams and fantasies. Background music is provided by some wonderful local musicians from Trieste; Riccardo Morpurgo Trio, a jazz ensemble, and Amorth, a music producer and electronic music artist. Along with these two dynamos, we have a fantastic Trip Hop artist still going strong from the UK, Funki Porcini. Please enjoy this unique conversation with Ted Meissner. His way of understanding and sharing Buddhist teaching and practice from a contemporary, secular perspective really illuminates the possibilities of an integrated and grounded journey. We touch on many topics: meditation, psychology, psychedelics, enlightenment, beliefs, reality, spiritual bypassing, and our personal journeys of evolution in terms of how we think about the word “spirituality.” Ted: “As we look more externally in search of something on the outside, that takes us farther away from what’s inside, what’s in our heart right here, right now. This is not anything supernatural, it is very mundane, it is the ordinary. It is this single breath. That type of focus, if you read Dogen and some other Zen authors and even the Pali canon, you see references to this, This, THIS —as not somewhere else, not a place to get to, but a wakefulness to what’s already here…. This is often lost in some places, with some teachers, when it is held up on a pedestal as being separate from others…” Theme music used by permission of http://www.jesseblakemusic.com/ Interviews, articles and more at https://www.freedombecomesyou.com

Titled Mr. Chan: Don’t Dumb Down, the podcast recalls my earliest days of training in 1979 with my first Qigong teacher. There is also a link to a conversation with Ted Meissner and myself on the Podcast site Present Moment: Mindfulness and Science. Ted works at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society doing community development and teaching Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. In addition to all that formal stuff, Ted is also one of the nicest people I've ever met. Whether or not mindfulness, is your cup of tea or not, Ted's approach to life is definitely working for him. When I asked Ted if I could sit down with him, it was with the goal of learning more about Secular Buddhism, because it seemed like a contradictory term. Just like when someone identifies as “Christian” there is no way to know whether they take communion with wine or grape juice (and don't for a minute think that's not an important question to a lot of Christians) It is important to remember not all Buddhists have the same philosophy, there are many differing ideas and schools of thought. Some Buddhists believe in reincarnation and some don't. There are around 350 million Buddhists worldwide, and just 6 months ago I was completely ignorant of different and nuanced those different belief systems were. As Ted is a secular Buddhist, this interview will focus on what he believes, and I hope that you find it as interesting and thought provoking as I did.
