Today’s episode is with Sean Webb who wrote a book about hacking happiness. Figuring out how to explain how the human mind works has had some interesting side effects. It turns out that the same model Sean uses to explain the human mind to MHH students also has some amazing applications in the world of Artificial Emotional Intelligence. Using his understanding of mind and deep mind, Sean has developed the first ever Algorithms of Human Emotion that are not reliant on biosensors. These will soon to be used to not only create simulated Turing test passing emotional responses in artificial personalities (think; C-3PO), but they will also be used to help create functional empathy and compassion in computer logic and their applications. This will not only make computers more user friendly and emotionally intelligent, it may also just save us from a rogue artificial general intelligence from accidentally or intentionally bringing an end to the human race. Either way, if Sean knows the human mind well enough to help computers understand how our minds work, he can certainly help you learn how to hack yours to your greatest personal benefit. We talk about the following and so much more: ✅What inspired him to write a book about mind hacking and happiness? ✅His personal journey and motivations? ✅ "Mind Hacking Happiness Vol I," and the key concepts it explores. ✅ How is our mind “hackable”? ✅ The "Code of the Human Mind." - what this code is and how it influences our happiness and well-being ✅ How understanding the neuroscience of happiness helps individuals improve their overall quality of life ✅The importance of "inner control" and "emotional regulation." Executive Living Schweinfurt ********************************************************************* Transcription: Speaker1: [00:00:00] Servus! Du fängst an! Also. Frisches Wasser ins Gesicht bringen. Alles immer so sukzessive ein Stückchen mehr. Nicht übertreiben. Reinfühlen. Wohlfühlen. Und einfach die Experience auch lieben. Lieben. Lieben lernen. Okay. Alles klar. Das sollte mal gewesen sein für heute. Ich wünsche euch noch einen schönen Montagabend. Bis dahin. Mach's gut. Ciao. Ciao. Ich bin mir.

Originally a UCLA professor of psychiatry for over 25 years, and a former FBI and police hostage negotiation trainer, Dr. Mark Goulston’s expertise has been forged and proven in the crucible of real-life, high stakes situations. Dr. Goulston’s book, “Just Listen” Discover the Secret to Getting Through to Absolutely Anyone, went on to become the top book on listening in the world because it shows readers the secret to getting through to absolutely anyone (a.k.a. hack into) by listening. His first book, Get Out of Your Own Way: Overcoming Self-Defeating Behavior, published in 1996 has been in the top five “Self Help Books” at Amazon for 5 years. His new book, Talking to Crazy: How to Deal with the Irrational and Impossible People in Your Life has been described as “the Swiss Army Knife of self-improvement books!” by a NetGalley reviewer. Starting off as a clinical interventional psychiatrist and UCLA professor of psychiatry, he learned to “hack” into the minds of suicidal and potentially violent individuals to prevent acts of destruction to others or themselves. He next went on to train FBI and police hostage negotiators. He has since expanded his work to “Hacking Genius” and speaks and provides webinars internationally on: “Thinking Like Steve Jobs – How to Create ‘Gotta Have It.'” His company, The Goulston Group, is hired by Founders, CEO’s and Boards of Directors to help them create a “gotta have it!” response to their services and products (which seamlessly translates into “gonna buy/hire it,” a “gotta work there” response in outside talent they’re recruiting, a “gonna get it done” response from employees and a “gotta invest there” response in investors. Mark Goulston is a passionate social activist and is the White co-host on the weekly Black radio show, Zo What Morning Show, where he focuses on leveling the playing field and empowering the African American community. He has also launched a campaign to “Heal the World, One Conversation at a Time” at Patreon. He contributes to the Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post, Fast Company, Business Insider and writes the “Closing Bell” for C-Suite Quarterly Magazine. Frequently called upon to share his expertise with the media, he has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, Fortune, Newsweek, Time, and Reuters; has offered commentary on NPR, CNN, and Fox News; and has appeared on the Oprah and Today shows. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
“When we get too caught up in the busyness of the world, we lose connection with one another – and ourselves.”– Jack Kornfield I spend a lot of my time around technology. I've never considered myself a techno-guy but I am a consistent user. As a user, technology can also be a distraction. This week, we learn about leveraging it! My guest on this episode is Robert Plotkin. Robert has not only a tech background but also a martial arts background, which make him uniquely qualified to put the two concepts together to show how we can use technology to actually increase our mindfulness practices. I had so much fun talking with Robert and learned a whole lot in the process. Take some time to listen to this episode so you can learn to integrate technology into your mindfulness practices rather than having it distract you. ENJOY! More on Robert... As we prepare for 2019, we often reflect and think about the year that's gone. We think about what we achieved and didn't achieve and what we would like to do in the next year. When it comes to using technology mindfully, there are a few ways that you set goals and habits to achieve mindfulness, productivity and quality time. Here are 5 ways that you can set yourself up to use technology more mindfully in 2019:1. Take some time to observe your experiences with technology. This is the most important step as it's where you deploy awareness around your use of technology. Identify what you'd like to change in your behaviour. Do you want to spend less time browsing on the internet at work for non work related things because you find that your workload becomes heavier as the week progresses due to lack of productivity? Perhaps you'd like to not take your smartphone to the dinner table as it distracts you from quality time with your loved one. These are behaviours you should take the time to observe as it will be the foundation to understanding your relationship with technology and how to be more mindful in your use of it. 2. Write these goals down.Another important step as this will serve as a frequent reminder for what your goals are. The main reason why New Years Resolutions fail is that we forget what these are by February. Writing this down will consolidate on what's the most important to you and serve as a frequent reminder. When you're reminded of these goals - you place yourself in a position where you're most likely to succeed.3. Come up with a concrete plan of actionNow that you're written your goals down, how can you come up with a plan of action to ensure these goals can be executed? 4. Develop Mindfulness HabitsRecently, we released a course called Tap Into Mindfulness - which is a sequence of systematic exercises that aids you to not only be aware of your habits around technology but also assists you in how to create mindfulness habits around your use. There is both a student and teacher's edition and currently it's on sale for $10 and $25. 5. Have a gentle attitude towards yourselfIt takes a while to form a new habit so be kind and patient with yourself as you navigate your way through this. Stopping altogether and giving up won't form a new habit but persistence will. On each episode of the Technology For Mindfulness Podcast, Robert Plotkin, co-creator of the “Hack Your Mind” series at MIT, explores the intersection between the practice of mindfulness & the use of technology in the modern age. We are in a generation for using Cell phones for approval and visibility. Social Media can be as disruptive as it is distracting with notifications and the need to use filters to ensure the perfect presentation is posted on the various platforms. Laurie Wolk is an author, teacher and coach who grew up in Westchester, NY. Even though she was confident and successful with being able to land a high profile career in media, she still had her doubts about the feedback the world around her was giving her. To build up her confidence, she went back to school, got a degree and became a Senior Educator at the Girls Leadership Institute. When the world of iPhones, Instagram, Netflix and Snapchat dawned on her and her children, she realized that a huge paradigm shift was happening and impacting adolescents on self confidence, self image and communication. Laurie is the author of Girls Just Wanna have Likes which unpacks just how much social media impacts youth attention and confidence. In this episode of Technology For Mindfulness, Laurie discusses how the use of cell phones for approval and visibility impedes mindfulness and provides insight on how to navigate through this when it comes to teaching your children how to communicate. Ellie Burrows, CEO and co-founder of MNDFL, a NYC based meditation studio, stands out as a walking reminder to meditate. But, while she opened MNDFL in the West Village, and has already expanded to the Upper East Side and Williamsburg, Ellie’s journey towards starting MNDFL wasn’t all that straightforward. For 7 years, she worked in the film industry and didn’t quite feel the same passion her colleagues did. In 2013, she quit her job and travelled the world as a spiritual tourist. But when she returned to New York, she struggled with her meditation practice as she found it difficult to meditate in her own home. She liked group meditation but there wasn’t a non-religious place that didn’t require days-long commitment. MNDFL was thus born out of her personal needs and as it turns out, many others wanted the same things. It’s hard to know when to work hard and when to relax. Today, more than ever before, the stress on productivity is constant. We feel we can do more with our days, squeeze more commitments into our free time, and then we will live a more fruitful life. But the reality is that we don’t. Increased productivity comes from a different perception of time, not squeezing more obligations into it.

Éowyn Ahlstrom first encountered meditation and yoga more than twenty years ago and has been practicing avidly ever since. She has made mindfulness practice a central priority in her life, attending many silent meditation retreats and yoga practice courses, as well as deeply studying both ancient and modern texts regarding these practices. Éowyn currently serves as the guiding teacher for the mindfulness communities of the Lancaster First Unitarian Church and the Gardner Unitarian Universalist Society, both in central Massachusetts. Based at Listening Wellness Center in Barre, she teaches regionally and is a part-time faculty member at the Center for Mindfulness. At Listening Wellness Center, Éowyn has developed an innovative, in-depth, nine-month program to re-integrate yoga and meditation, entitled Living Yoga, Living Mindfully. Her approach to practice and teaching is holistic, with a strong emphasis on embodiment. Prior to full-time teaching, she was on staff at the Insight Meditation Society for seven years, serving in the areas of communication and development. Silent retreat remains a priority for Éowyn, who devotes at least one month each year to that way of practice. Employees have never had a harder time staying focused on the task at hand. Distractions have become so prevalent that today only 45% of employees' time goes to primary job duties. The average employee wastes more than 8 hours of each workweek, and more than half of that time takes place on a mobile device. All this multitasking and that pile of read-but-not-responded-to emails cause employees significant stress. Unfortunately, two out of three workers say their employer is doing nothing to help them cope with stress, leading 42% of employees to report having left a position because of work-related stress. Recently, the CDC identified stress as the number one workforce health issue. Fortunately, a growing body of research on our connected lives offers fresh insights on how to live productive, calm lives. Liza Kindred is an author, speaker & founder of "Mindful Technology". She's worked with some of the top companies fashion and tech companies like VOGUE Magazine, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Hearst Media, Time Inc, Microsoft, Cisco, Vodafone & Amazon. Liza has also appeared in the The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Financial Times, Market Watch and other publications. After spending twenty years working in fashion & technology, eventually specializing in wearable tech, Liza became alarmed by the lack of attention being paid to whether these devices were serving us... or the other way around. As a meditator for eight years, a student of Shambhala Buddhism & a reiki practitioner, she began talking about this disparity, & eventually developed the principles behind "Mindful Technology", which have been wildly well received as while nearly everyone loves technology, they also want to escape from it's grips from time to time. This is the genesis behind "Mindful Technology" the company & the #mindfultech movement. The irony of Dave’s mission is that he considers himself very chaotic & inherently unproductive, even being diagnosed by a clinical psychologist as “off the charts ADHD.” That label became a personal challenge that led to developing simple systems that fast-paced business leaders worldwide now utilize to improve focus, structure, & stability. Crenshaw received his degree in Business Management-Entrepreneurship from the Marriott School at Brigham Young University & began his coaching career in 1998 as the youngest independent consultant for one of the world’s largest business coaching firms. Dave is the founder of Invaluable Inc., a coaching & training corporation that has helped transform hundreds of thousands of business leaders around the world. He currently lives in the shadow of Utah’s Rocky Mountains with his wife & children.
