The AI revolution is here, and it's a gold rush. But are you protecting your valuable AI innovations? This week on The Richer Geek Podcast, we talk with Robert Plotkin, a leading AI patent attorney with over 25 years of experience. Robert helps cutting-edge AI companies worldwide secure patents that not only protect their intellectual property but also drive profit. In this episode, we're discussing... Patents are more than just legal weapons; they are valuable business assets that can be licensed, sold, and used to attract investment. Patents provide a crucial deterrent against competitors, even if you never intend to initiate a lawsuit. They also significantly increase your company's valuation for potential acquisition. AI-assisted creations, including prompts and inventions developed using AI, can be patentable, but the specifics are crucial. Strategic IP is paramount for AI company success, impacting fundraising, profitability, talent acquisition, and exit strategies. While copyright and trade secrets offer some protection, patents provide unique and powerful safeguards for AI innovations. Patent litigation, though often expensive, is increasingly accessible to startups through innovative financing options. Early consultation with a patent attorney is vital to avoid inadvertently forfeiting patent rights through premature public disclosures. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Robert Plotkin discuss:Giving information away. Writing a lead-generating book while maintaining your law practice.Benefits of writing a book above other kinds of content marketing. What to do before publication, during promotion, and after publication. Key Takeaways:Even if you gave someone your entire process, nobody will be able to execute like you do because you have value to bring to the situation. Break your book down into small, manageable bites. Also, consider sharing some of the information as you go and get feedback as you go so it feels less monumental of a task. Having a good outline in place is crucial - it gives you opportunities to break your script into smaller tasks that can be tackled in your 15 or 20 free minutes. Have multiple ways of distributing your content - audio, digital, and print. People consume content in different ways, but you can also repackage that content in your content marketing. "The thing about a book is it sends this separate meta message about your clout, your credibility as an expert. I think most lawyers who are writing a book are trying to use it to establish or cement themselves as an expert, a thought leader, someone who knows how to get certain things done for their clients in the law and a book sends that meta message at just order of magnitude higher level. There's another meta message: by someone seeing that you wrote a book, they know you're someone who took the time and has the discipline to write a book. Even if they never read it, that sends a message to them." — Robert PlotkinFind out more about the 10 Easy-to-Execute Hacks to Unlock Your Full Potential at: https://fretzin.com/events Thank you to our Sponsors!Lawmatics: https://www.lawmatics.com/bethatlawyer/Get Staffed Up: https://getstaffedup.com/bethatlawyer/Green Cardigan Marketing: https://greencardiganmarketing.com/ Episode References: The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz About Robert Plotkin: Robert Plotkin is a patent attorney who has specialized in obtaining software patents for his clients to maximize company value for over 25 years. In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Robert Plotkin discuss:How AI can assist a law firm and the benefits of automating those things that can be automated. Best practices for selecting automation and law firm technologies.Common misconceptions about law firm automation. Creating a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Key Takeaways:No matter how much we automate, there will always be something for humans to do. Not everything can be automated, but those things that can be, can help your law firm run more efficiently. When you use automation to generate content, you must apply the same level of care and review that you would when reviewing content generated by humans. If you haven't used much automation, start with the tool that gives you the most return for the least amount of setup effort. You can automate many things on the business side that don't have anything to do with the document generation or client tasks. This will still save you time and money. "I still think it's true that performing legal analysis, in many ways, cannot be automated. If you were to observe, during the course of your day, what all the tasks are you perform as a lawyer and you break them down into smaller units, many of them don't really require the skill of a lawyer. Those can be automated." — Robert Plotkin Thank you to our Sponsors!LegalEase Marketing: https://legaleasemarketing.com/Moneypenny: https://www.moneypenny.com/us/Practice Panther: https://www.practicepanther.com/ Episode References: Book: The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz - https://www.amazon.com/Paradox-Choice-Why-More-Less/dp/0060005696 About Robert Plotkin: Robert Plotkin is a patent attorney who has been specializing in software and AI patents for over 25 years. “An idle mind is the devil’s playground.” This is not the case in business. When working on a business or building a brand, it’s easy to fall into a state of constant distractions, busyness, and endless sources calling for your attention. In this episode, I talk with Robert Plotkin, the founder of Technology for Mindfulness. He lives and breathes the high-tech world, but always leaves space for his mindfulness practices. In our discussion, Robert challenges the value of being busy and instead places that value in idleness. He shares insights into how to use mindfulness practices with technology, create personal systems to reestablish timely expectations, and ultimately provide space for creativity and productivity. So get ready to learn practical tips on how to create a mindful workspace and increase your productivity. Some Questions I Ask: How did you get to where you are today? As we prepare for 2019, we often reflect and think about the year that's gone. We think about what we achieved and didn't achieve and what we would like to do in the next year. When it comes to using technology mindfully, there are a few ways that you set goals and habits to achieve mindfulness, productivity and quality time. Here are 5 ways that you can set yourself up to use technology more mindfully in 2019:1. Take some time to observe your experiences with technology. This is the most important step as it's where you deploy awareness around your use of technology. Identify what you'd like to change in your behaviour. Do you want to spend less time browsing on the internet at work for non work related things because you find that your workload becomes heavier as the week progresses due to lack of productivity? Perhaps you'd like to not take your smartphone to the dinner table as it distracts you from quality time with your loved one. These are behaviours you should take the time to observe as it will be the foundation to understanding your relationship with technology and how to be more mindful in your use of it. 2. Write these goals down.Another important step as this will serve as a frequent reminder for what your goals are. The main reason why New Years Resolutions fail is that we forget what these are by February. Writing this down will consolidate on what's the most important to you and serve as a frequent reminder. When you're reminded of these goals - you place yourself in a position where you're most likely to succeed.3. Come up with a concrete plan of actionNow that you're written your goals down, how can you come up with a plan of action to ensure these goals can be executed? 4. Ellie Burrows, CEO and co-founder of MNDFL, a NYC based meditation studio, stands out as a walking reminder to meditate. But, while she opened MNDFL in the West Village, and has already expanded to the Upper East Side and Williamsburg, Ellie’s journey towards starting MNDFL wasn’t all that straightforward. For 7 years, she worked in the film industry and didn’t quite feel the same passion her colleagues did. In 2013, she quit her job and travelled the world as a spiritual tourist. But when she returned to New York, she struggled with her meditation practice as she found it difficult to meditate in her own home. She liked group meditation but there wasn’t a non-religious place that didn’t require days-long commitment. MNDFL was thus born out of her personal needs and as it turns out, many others wanted the same things. Éowyn Ahlstrom first encountered meditation and yoga more than twenty years ago and has been practicing avidly ever since. She has made mindfulness practice a central priority in her life, attending many silent meditation retreats and yoga practice courses, as well as deeply studying both ancient and modern texts regarding these practices. Éowyn currently serves as the guiding teacher for the mindfulness communities of the Lancaster First Unitarian Church and the Gardner Unitarian Universalist Society, both in central Massachusetts. Based at Listening Wellness Center in Barre, she teaches regionally and is a part-time faculty member at the Center for Mindfulness. At Listening Wellness Center, Éowyn has developed an innovative, in-depth, nine-month program to re-integrate yoga and meditation, entitled Living Yoga, Living Mindfully. Her approach to practice and teaching is holistic, with a strong emphasis on embodiment. Prior to full-time teaching, she was on staff at the Insight Meditation Society for seven years, serving in the areas of communication and development. Silent retreat remains a priority for Éowyn, who devotes at least one month each year to that way of practice. Robert Plotkin is an engineer, mindfulness practitioner, and the founder of Technology for Mindfulness. His background in computer science and engineering dates back over thirty years to his days programming an Atari 800 personal computer, through a degree in Computer Science and Engineering at MIT, and nearly two decades as a patent attorney specializing in patent protection for computer technology. His relationship to Zen Buddhism stems primarily from his study of Japanese martial arts for more than three decades. He is a graduate of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at the Center for Mindfulness and practices mindfulness meditation. His fascination with the relationship and interactions between computer technology and the mind is reflected in his book on the automation of creativity in the field of inventing, The Genie in the Machine: How Computer-Automated Inventing is Revolutionizing Law and Business (Stanford, 2009). Carr, author of The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has changed the way I deal with my emotions. This is where I think the stillness aspect of mindfulness is really helpful. I talked a lot earlier about action and martial arts, in doing that you engage a lot of action, movement of the body. I think for me, sitting meditation has been very helpful in dealing with emotions. Not just being able to notice what they are, but accept that they're there. Before I did sitting meditation, I engaged in a lot of trying to change difficult or negative emotions. For me, sitting meditation has really, really been helpful. When you say dealing with emotion, just being able to be more aware of what they actually are at any given moment, being able to accept them and notice them without being able to change them. I'm sure you know from your own mindfulness practice, sometimes that results in them lingering for awhile and sometimes I found that paying attention to them or even diving into them can result in them dissipating or changing in some way. I'm always working on accepting in advance that whatever the outcome is, it is. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is a very, very big part of my mindfulness practice. Always has been. Even from the martial arts training; breathing really fairly fundamental and it's been interesting for me to do sitting meditation. Certainly there are some similarities and differences between how I think breath is approached in the two. In my experience in martial arts training, we do pay attention to the breath. If I can paint it in broad strokes, there is more of a goal or pragmatic aspect to working on and somewhat improving the breath. We work on deepening it, we work on being able to maintain it as more of an even keel. We work on being able to breathe more deeply. Part of it is to develop physical power. There is a pragmatic goal, so to speak, at least as part of the martial arts training and the breath. And so it's definitely been interesting to me to come at the breath and sitting meditation from a different perspective. Although sometimes when I'm doing sitting meditation I will form the intention of both noticing the breath and if I notice that it's shallow, I will relax. But I also some of the time, will merely notice what it is without trying to change it. That's been a different experience for me. Certainly in martial arts training, we often say that it begins and ends with the breath. I think for all the same reasons, I mean breath is the foundation of life. Everything else stops when you're not breathing. And so, that's always been a really significant part, and I do return to the breath. In fact, I did just go back to a meditation teacher who I really rely on for a lot of guidance and was asking her about focusing on the breath and how I hear a lot of instruction these days that seem to imply to me that we should always return to the breath. I've found that in my own practice, I'm at a point where sometimes if I'm experiencing and aware of a difficult emotion that returning to the breath can feel like a distraction. Employees have never had a harder time staying focused on the task at hand. Distractions have become so prevalent that today only 45% of employees' time goes to primary job duties. The average employee wastes more than 8 hours of each workweek, and more than half of that time takes place on a mobile device. All this multitasking and that pile of read-but-not-responded-to emails cause employees significant stress. Unfortunately, two out of three workers say their employer is doing nothing to help them cope with stress, leading 42% of employees to report having left a position because of work-related stress. Recently, the CDC identified stress as the number one workforce health issue. Fortunately, a growing body of research on our connected lives offers fresh insights on how to live productive, calm lives. Liza Kindred is an author, speaker & founder of "Mindful Technology". She's worked with some of the top companies fashion and tech companies like VOGUE Magazine, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Hearst Media, Time Inc, Microsoft, Cisco, Vodafone & Amazon. Liza has also appeared in the The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Financial Times, Market Watch and other publications. After spending twenty years working in fashion & technology, eventually specializing in wearable tech, Liza became alarmed by the lack of attention being paid to whether these devices were serving us... or the other way around. As a meditator for eight years, a student of Shambhala Buddhism & a reiki practitioner, she began talking about this disparity, & eventually developed the principles behind "Mindful Technology", which have been wildly well received as while nearly everyone loves technology, they also want to escape from it's grips from time to time. This is the genesis behind "Mindful Technology" the company & the #mindfultech movement.
