Podcast Intro for "MindfulNews Podcast" Greetings, dear listeners, and welcome back to another enlightening episode of the MindfulNews Podcast. I'm your host, Gui. As we navigate the landscapes of today's transformative discussions, we are joined by the remarkable Chris Altizer and Gloria Johnson-Cusak, co-authors of 'Growing the Elephant: Increasing Earned Advantage for All'. Our journey today will span across various terrains: We'll dive deep into the DEI Origins. The world has seen an increased focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. What's the story behind its rising prominence in the business sector? And how did it find its voice in our everyday conversations? Earned Advantage beckons us to explore the nuances of diversity's evolution and its resonance within the legal spectrum. As we wade through the waters of societal dynamics, we encounter the 'Privilege' Paradox. What complexities does the term 'privilege' bring, and how do we navigate our diverse differences? The Elephant in the Room stands as a monumental topic within our discussions. Chris and Gloria offer insights into its significance both within their literary work and in the larger scope of DEI discussions. As the world around us morphs at an unprecedented pace, we'll deliberate on Future Skills Relevance and Tgui Thinking. What skills will hold their ground in this whirlwind of change? How can reflection and mindfulness pave our path forward? Embarking on a personal voyage, Chris and Gloria will share their Journey into Mindfulness, offering a glimpse into their transformative experiences. We conclude with a reflection on What Matters Most, focusing on the core values and principles that anchor our souls in these tempestuous times. So, dear listeners, as the tapestry of our conversation unfolds, we invite you to immerse yourself, find a moment of tranquility, and join us in this exploration of mindfulness, diversity, and the essence of being. Welcome back to another episode of the MindfulNews Podcast and today we have a very special guest joining us. Alan Lau, founder of the Frank Soo Foundation, is here to share the incredible story of Frank Soo, a pioneer for Chinese players in English football. Frank Soo was the first Chinese player to represent England, earning nine caps for the national team during World War II. Although these wartime internationals are not officially recognized, Frank's contributions to the sport cannot be understated. In addition to his time with the national team, he played for clubs such as Leicester and Luton Town. Following his playing career, Soo went on to become a coach and manager, working with clubs in Scandinavia, Italy, and the Netherlands. His passion for football extended beyond his own career, leaving a lasting impact on the game. Our guest, Alan Lau, has been deeply involved in Chinese grassroots football for over a decade, organizing tournaments and fostering the growth of the sport in his community. When Alan discovered Frank Soo's story, he felt a calling to share it with the world and inspire others. With that mission in mind, he founded the Frank Soo Foundation to benefit everyone involved in football. Matthieu Ricard's TED talk remains one of the most viewed. He is labeled the world's happiest man and translated for the Dalai Lama for over a decade. His book called ‘Altruism' is still one of my favourites and is a world best seller. He describes Buddhism as the identification of suffering and then finding ways to alleviate it. He has helped scientists explore the benefits of Mindfulness and has taken part in many research projects (he's the guy with the nodes stuck to his head). As a teacher and fan of Mindfulness, Matthieu goes down as one of my most memorable and influential guests. Our car pool podcast together was very special and I am very happy to share this with you. Anh and Will join me to ask Matthieu our deepest questions. Why are we afraid to speak publicly? Vanessa Cuddeford joins us on the podcast and she brings 20 years of broadcast experience as a producer, reporter and news anchor with BBC, Independent Television (ITV) and NBC News. Following an incident live on air whilst interviewing a senior politician, Vanessa choked (literally) and had to have a colleague take over. This led to a sequence of life changing events to build a successful online communications coaching company, developing a digital learning platform and courses which have helped hundreds of professionals speak confidently and persuasively. Eckhart Tolle's work had a significant impact on the speed and depth of my understanding of how to be in the present moment. We're back with our first Mindfulnews episode for 2021! This is quite a special one for me as my guest today, Sean Carroll, is someone I've known for about 13 years. I would make regular visits to Milwuakee for work and Sean was bar tending at the local watering hole, Mo's Irish pub. Over the years this friendship grew, and then out of nowhere, he joined the software company I work for and soon became my boss. Ive been lucky enough to have great bosses, and Sean is right up there with the best. The magic of this friendship really took hold as I introduced Sean to mindfulness. He had reached out to me following some personal challenges, dealing with anger, frustration, relationships. He didn't know much about mindfulness but he knew he wanted to give it a go. Cut to almost a year later, his mindfulness practice is going strong and he is closer to his family and more present to them than he has ever been. The transformation is quite remarkable and a great testament to the benefits of Mindfulness. We talk about his 15 years of software experience, the loss of his parents, dealing with death and the mental illness of a close friend. We also talk about the lessons learned from being a bartender, and we dig into the multiple benefits that he now enjoys from mindfulness. Thanks for showing your support with a like and subscribe. For the first time in peace time, all exams have been cancelled. With the government locking down its people and closing all schools/colleges, what effect is this having on teachers and students. What happens to students who are trying to get into their preferred colleges or universities? what about their end of year grades? What about the teachers who all of a sudden need to adapt and teach from home online? What have been the challenges facing schools and what about the stress this is causing for all involved? Anh Nguyen is a great friend but also a maths teacher at the largest college in London. He is also part of the online learning team charged with providing the tools and the training for teachers so that they can teach their classes from home. He shares the time line of events that led up to the school closures and the impact this is having for all involved. Gui
If you want to teach young people mindfulness, you've got to understand it from the inside out - The Mindfulness in schools project helps schools and youth organisations to develop mindfulness initiatives and Claire's role is to develop classroom friendly materials and train teachers to deliver them. We get into the struggle of mass implementation, the Myriad project (headed up by Oxford University) one of the largest mindfulness in education research projects, we discuss the 5000 teachers trained and the 500000 children reached, the randomised control trial involving 8000 students and 250 teachers. And the big question ‘Does mindfulness help with exam results’. Action for Happiness is a movement of people committed to building a happier and more caring society. You can join thousands of others who are spreading a bit more happiness in their homes, workplaces, schools and local communities. Our website has all the information you need to sign up for our ‘exploring what matters course’ and also details about facilitating one yourself, all the information is online, and we are here to answer any questions you have. We often hear about the benefits of mindfulness but we rarely hear any talk about the deepest aspects that mindfulness can help to reveal such as why are we here? what is our purpose, what is happiness? what are we? What if you were being tricked by an evil demon and everyday you woke up believing you were living on earth, doing earthly things, but in-fact this was an illusion and you were just a brain in a jar, plugged into the 'matrix' - how differently would you live your life? What if Mindfulness could show you that the image of your self and your ego is an illusion, what if mindfulness could help answer some of the biggest and most profound questions that the philosophers have forever been debating. We discuss this on the podcast and have a really fun introspective conversation about our experiences. #BlackbeltMindfulness Show your love and hit the follow/subscribe/like botton and help support the show. We kicked off 2018 with a Carpool conversation with the wonderful Matthieu Ricard. Nick-named the World's happiest man, we drive Matthieu from his hotel to the airport. We discuss mindfulness within a buddhist context, the concept of 'heartfulness', Descartes, and the 'convenient' illusion of the self. Matthieu gave up his scientific career to become a monk and moved to the Himalayas where he resides to this day. He translated for the Dalai Lama for over a decade, and has written many best selling books on the subject of happiness and altruism. His talk on Happiness is one of the most viewed Ted talks, and is one of the most influential figures in mindfulness and meditation today. What an incredible honour it was to spend time with one of the leading figures in Mindfulness, Jon Kabat-Zinn. His Mindfulness course (MBSR) is being taught all over the globe and his books on Mindfulness have been bestsellers since the 70's. Given that Anh and I have become so passionate about meditation and particularly Mindfulness, we were thrilled to have a back and forth conversation with Jon and really get to discuss the subjects that are important to us. We talk about the pros and cons of social media, how we found out about Jon's incredible work, the AFH course and the Philosophy of Mindfulness. One of the perks of podcasting, is that I get to meet some incredible people. On this episode, we speak with one of the co-founders of the Floatworks centre in Vauxhall. This is the leading place to go for all things sensory deprivation, and with plans to add more float centres in central London, Ed is leading the charge in this ever growing industry. If you haven't heard about this already, the concept is simple. You hire out a pod for an hour or so and float in salt water. The unique factor is that all senses are quietened. You are in complete darkness, with no sound, or any other distractions. We discuss both the physical and mental benefits that can be gained from regular sessions, and why so many people, including top level athletes are now doing this. This is the second podcast with Ed and the 4th on the benefits of floating. One of the reasons for this is the parallels it has with meditation. Furthermore, the floatation tank is the perfect environment to meditate as you have no other distractions than your thoughts. For me, this is a very special and spiritual place and an exited to see the world opening up to it.
Renaissance Podcast presents, the Action for Happiness series episode 13 with Leon Logothetis. Leon’s story began like so many we hear about today - fed up with a unfulfilling job, and inspired by the motor Cycle diaries, Leon left that world behind to embark on a global journey surviving solely on the kindness of others. We spoke to him on an earlier podcast, about the amazing adventures of a nobody - Leon returns to talk about his Netflix special - the Kindness Diaries and his latest book - Live, Love, Explore. 'I didn't just want to give kindness to someone, I wanted to give them an opportunity' - Leon Logothetis
Ed is a teacher and writer on Mindfulness and has been sharing this with others during a time where there was little science to back up the amazing claims. Ed also contributed to one of the most important reports in mindfulness history to develop mindfulness-based policies for the UK. Mindfulness is creeping its way into schools, prisons, government, the health system, business etc but imagine it being part of the national curriculum where all students had to practice every day. Imagine whole prisons meditating and how amazing this could be to actually rehabilitate inmates, rather than just punish them. Ed's work is playing a big role in making this happen.
Chade is almost single handedly responsible for introducing mindfulness corporate-wide at Google, where he worked as an engineer before his role changed in order to focus on bringing joy to employees. This led him to meet some of the most influential people in the world from President Obama to his Holiness the Dalai Lama. His latest book, Joy on Demand is helping to inspire and change lives around the world, and is a great guide into the world of Mindfulness and ultimately Happiness.
Over 600 students across all 31 colleges at Cambridge University are taking part in this Mindfulness research. We talk with Julieta to understand what are the hypothesis and also does Mindfulness help to improve exam results.
'Globally, mental health is a 1 Billion person problem'. In this episode we had the privilege of visiting Dr Willem at the Oxford Mindfulness centre. When we say Mindfulness is backed by the latest science, it is this centre that is playing a huge role. We have been interested in the effective use of Mindfulness in people with depression and other debilitating illnesses which adversely affects their mental health and happiness. This was a great opportunity to get some insight into the process from an expert!
