Today, I interview Julia Miron, who grew up in a home where speaking her truth wasn't safe. As the youngest in a household filled with anger, control, and emotional chaos, she learned to stay silent to protect herself. She retreated into journaling, music, and nature—places where she didn't have to explain herself, where she could finally breathe. Her voice, however, remained hidden. Her words barely above a whisper, while the other kids laughed and played freely.Years later, when a loss made her realize that she wanted to speak, the fear of being seen and heard still held her tightly. The idea of standing in front of people terrified her. She had tried Toastmasters, but the pressure to perform only made things worse. Then someone told her about Speaking Circles. Skeptical but curious, she walked into her first session—and everything shifted. For the first time, she stood in front of others and didn't feel the need to hide. There were no judgments, no corrections, just presence. Even though she was sweating and trembling, she was allowed to simply be. She began showing up not only on the page but in her voice.Today, she is a certified mindfulness teacher and coach, supporting individuals through one-on-one sessions that blend mindfulness and Speaking Circles. She's also launching her podcast, The Messy Meditator, where she opens honest conversations about the beauty and struggle of being human. Through her work, she helps others find the safety, stillness, and self-acceptance she had searched for most of her life.__________________Julia Rebecca Miron is a mindfulness teacher and coach, qualified by Brown University as a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher. Her mission is to make mindfulness accessible to more people by demystifying the idea that you need to be perfect and Buddha-like to practice it. She believes that showing up messy is better than not showing up at all. She's also a writer, and her work has been featured in Chicken Soup for the Soul. She's currently preparing to launch her podcast, The Messy Meditator, which explores mindfulness, messiness, and life.In her free time, she loves hiking, listening to R&B and hip hop, connecting with loved ones, and doting on her dog, Disco.__________________Find Julia here:https://www.instagram.com/the.messy.meditator/https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliarebeccamiron/https://www.themessymeditator.com/Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear. This meditation is often used in the day retreat which is part of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) 8wk course. Engage the imagery & felt sense of being one with a basin of water. Notice how life can feel choppy and unsettled on the surface, and there is also a constant stillness beneath the surface you can anchor in as well. This meditation is calming in the moment of practice and can also can be called upon during stressful events to help anchor and ground the body and mind.

Welcome to Zen Commuter and day two of Tricycle Week! Today, we dive into an important question: Is meditation truly beneficial for young students? Across the country, schools have introduced mindfulness programs with the hope of improving focus, reducing stress, and fostering emotional well-being. But do these programs actually deliver on their promise? We'll explore key research, including insights from Emma Varvaloucas' article, Classroom Mindfulness Put to the Test, which examines the largest study to date on mindfulness in schools. Are these programs helping, or do they come with unintended consequences? Let's uncover the science behind meditation in the classroom. The Living Process episode 27 with guest Jonathan Foust Energy Flow and The Pathless Path I'm very happy to welcome Jonathan Foust to this episode. Jonathan has a lifetime of spiritual practice to share. He has dedicated his life to yoga practices, Buddhist meditation, mindfulness practice as well as Focusing. In our conversation we touch on how Focusing fits with these various somatic practices and the spiritual understanding of energy flow in the body. Jonathan shares his own personal journey and questions such as what body are we working with and what does it mean to heal? We discuss Focusing as pointing to the pathless path and how close it is to the RAIN model as used by Jonathan and his wife, meditation teacher Tara Brach. We wondered whether therapy really offers much more than these other effective and compassionate approaches. Jonathan offers a weekly talk on his website and is working on guidance for being with physical pain. We end by talking a bit about how to respond to the uncertainties and suffering in contemporary societies. Jonathan Foust, MA, CSA, is a guiding teacher with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington and a founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute in Washington. A senior teacher and former president of Kripalu Center, he leads retreats, trainings and classes around the United States and works individually with those interested in healing and spiritual awakening. He's trained in a wide range of healing modalities, including Focusing (Certified Trainer), Kripalu Yoga, Trager Work, Cranio-Sacral, Reiki and Polarity Therapies to name a few. He has a Master of Arts in Education and certifications in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Focusing and Dharma practices. He has spent decades in Ashram and spiritual communities and now offers body-centred inquiry on retreats and intensives. For many years he has lived near Washington DC with his wife psychologist and mediation teacher Tara Brach. Guest Laura Bakosh, Ph.D., is a mindfulness teacher, published researcher, and co-founder of Inner Explorer, an organization that brings stress resilience, attention, and mental well-being skills to K-12 schools and early learning centers. She earned a Ph.D. from Sofia University and a Bachelor of Science from Boston College. Laura was trained as a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) instructor at the University of Massachusetts, Center for Mindfulness, and is an Allstate/Northwestern University Nonprofit Fellow. Laura has practiced and studied mindfulness for over 30 years and began teaching it to children 15 years ago. She realized it was difficult for children to commit to daily practice at home, leading to the creation of Inner Explorer in 2011. Inner Explorer provides a year-long sequence of short, audio-guided mindfulness practices that are easy to implement in the classroom each day! Students and educators practice together and improve their social-emotional capacities, leading to 43% less stress, 60% better emotional regulation and behavior, and 15% higher grades and test scores. Laura coined the term “Mindfulness-Based Social Emotional Learning-(MBSEL)” in 2012 to show that mindfulness is foundational to social-emotional functioning because it buffers stress and activates learning readiness. Summary In this episode, Jeff and Jillane Flanders, the Executive Director of the Center for Educational Improvement, talk with Laura Bakosh, Ph.D.., founder of Inner Explorer, about the transformative power of daily mindfulness in schools. Laura shares her journey into mindfulness and the development of her program, which provides simple, guided audio sessions for students from preschool to high school. The program emphasizes the connection between mindfulness and academic, behavioral, and emotional benefits, supported by extensive neuroscience research. Laura explains how mindfulness reduces stress, improves focus, and fosters emotional resilience, particularly in high-stress school environments. She highlights the challenges of implementation, including educator buy-in, and shares success stories of schools that have adopted the program, noting improvements in student behavior, academic performance, and school culture. The conversation concludes with strategies to integrate mindfulness into education more broadly and the need for systemic changes in teacher preparation programs. Three Takeaways: Daily Mindfulness Improves Outcomes: Regular mindfulness practice enhances focus, reduces stress, and boosts academic and behavioral performance in students. Simple Implementation is Key: Inner Explorer's guided audio sessions make it easy for educators to integrate mindfulness without adding to their workload. Cultural Shift Required: Systemic changes, including mindfulness training in teacher preparation programs, are needed for widespread implementation. Social Media Email LBakosh@InnerExplorer.org. "You will have bad times, but they will always wake you up to the stuff you weren'tpaying attention to." - Robin Williams Welcome back, community! After a brief summer hiatus, our hosts Adrienne and Tom are excited to return with a special episode focusing on mindfulness and leadership. This episode builds on our recent sprint of panel discussions covering a wide array of leadership topics, including two panels on wellbeing at the individual, team, enterprise, and global levels. In the introduction to this episode Adrienne Guerrero and Tom Rosenak set the stage for our guest interview: They discuss the constant pressure on leaders to "keep going" without adequate time for strategic thinking and reflection. They emphasize the interconnectedness of individual well-being, team performance, and business outcomes like retention and engagement. The co-founders liken self-care to maintenance in a mechanical system - neglectingthe "human machines" inevitably leads to decreased productivity. They stress the importance of open conversations about stress and well-being, even when additional resources aren't available. Adrienne and Tom highlight the need for personalized approaches to stress management, acknowledging that everyone experiences stress and VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) differently. We're thrilled to welcome back Dot Proux our featured guest, who previously joined us on a panel about self-leadership. Dot is an executive coach and leadership development advisor who teaches an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course. Highlights from our conversation with Dot: Dot's background: Before becoming a coach, she was a partner at a Big 4 accounting firm, experiencing high stress and burnout firsthand. Personal experience: Dot shares her journey with "cliffing" - pushing herself too hard until her body forced her to stop and recover. Empathy in coaching: She now uses her personal experiences to connect with and support her high-performing, high-stress leadership clients. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) benefits: Research shows that MBSR can improve focus, present moment awareness, and overall well-being. Course structure: Dot's 8-week MBSR program includes: Formal and informal mindfulness exercises Accountability and support from a cohortGradual building of the "mindfulness muscle" Opportunity to join Dot's Fall MBSR Cohort To enroll in the upcoming fall program or learn more about mindfulness, visit: https://aleadershipbeyond.com/mindfulness-based-stress-reduction/ Join us as we continue to explore leadership practices that keep the human front and center in the face of the sometimes dehumanizing modern leadership challenges. A Leadership Beyond is led by Change Management Consultant Adrienne Guerrero and Leadership Communication Strategist Tom Rosenak, and exists to support the alignment between business strategy and people strategy - to drive results with people not at the expense of people (Talent Optimization). Subscribe to our podcast to join the Leadership Beyond Community of Conversation and hear insights from thought leaders and human development experts leading the way in the field of Talent Optimization. Today's conversation is with Bonnie Gintis, DO Bonnie lives in in northern Vermont. She has taught worldwide, addressing physicians and all people interested in exploring embodiment. She retired from Osteopathic private practice in 2009 and now devotes herself to teaching, writing, and exploring new ways to foster health and wellbeing. She is the author of Engaging The Movement Of Life: Exploring Health And Embodiment Through Osteopathy And Continuum. She is a 1986 graduate of New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she has also taught Osteopathic Principles and Practice. She has been a faculty member with the Sutherland Cranial Teaching Foundation, the American Academy of Osteopathy, the European School of Osteopathy, The German Academy for Osteopathic Medicine, and Jim Jealous, DO. Bonnie has been a board member, faculty member and Course Director for The Osteopathic Cranial Academy, and was honored with Fellowship in the Osteopathic Cranial Academy (FCA) in 2015. Bonnie studied Continuum extensively with Emilie Conrad and taught in collaboration with her from 1997 until the time of her death in 2014. She was authorized by Emilie to teach Continuum, and now teaches a synthesis of all her areas of exploration and expertise. She has had more than 50 years of meditation practice, trained to be a teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and has explored many approaches to mindfulness within and outside of Buddhist traditions. Bonnie's innovative approach combines Osteopathy, Continuum's fluid movement exploration, and mindfulness, expanding the possibilities for experiencing health and embodiment and allowing for the development of perceptual skills to more deeply care for ourselves and others. https://osteopathyunplugged.com/ https://bonniegintis.com/ In today's talk discussed about what Osteopathy and Continuum are. We shared perspective on the importance of natural movement, meditation, and a holistic approach in professional practices. We also discussed ways to connect with Bonnie's work, including her wonderful book and her upcoming teaching schedule including a retreat at Kripalu in October. There was really so much territory we could cover her and I felt Bonnie did a great job to just scratch the surface without opening up too many wormholes to go down, as the topics are rather vast topics as we explore them more. I would highly recommend her book and her podcast to get a deeper sense into what Osteopathy and Continuum can be. They are practices which I am personally still so green about but have touched and changed me in profound ways. I hope if they can be supportive for you that you too can get more information to explore your inner workings through these ways of being. If you are enjoying and getting something out of these talks, we'd appreciate it if you would leave a positive review of the podcast and subscribe to it through the platform of your choice. When you do this it really helps other people find us, and we greatly appreciate your support. In this episode of the podcast, I'm covering six common mindfulness myths - things I think people often get wrong about mindfulness and meditation. Don't let these trip you up, or stop you before you even start! I hate to see people miss out on the benefits of mindfulness because they've heard a confusing mix of messages about how it works. Some of these myths have unfortunately convinced a lot of people that they can't meditate, even if they are interested in the idea of mindfulness. And, some of the other misconceptions are actually worries people have that mindfulness might take them in the wrong direction, or make them feel worse. The 6 mindfulness myths you'll hear about: 1) that mindfulness is just a mental exercise and not connected to the body 2) mindfulness is all about concentrating on a single focal point 3) you need to get rid of your thoughts to practice mindfulness 4) that mindfulness leads to hyper-vigilance and self-consciousness, and can increase pain or anxiety 5) mindfulness is just a tool for performing tasks more efficiently 6) that mindfulness is an altered state, dissociation, or an escape from reality. None of the above should be true, if you are learning Mindfulness Meditation from a well-trained teacher or a reliable source. However, the term “mindfulness” is used so widely these days in a variety of contexts, and there is a lot of unfortunate confusion. I'll be talking about mindfulness practices that come from the Buddhist tradition (Vipassana, or Insight Meditation), which is also the root source of secular programs like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). I hope this will help you understand how those teachings differ from other forms of meditation, and why these concerns about mindfulness are untrue. So, let's bring clarity to the confusion and break down these mindfulness myths! -- For more links and resources mentioned in this episode, find the show notes at movedtomeditate.yoga/podcast. In this episode, Dr. T hosts an interview between author Rita Bozi and guest interviewer Matt Russell, as Truth Fairy is unfortunately absent. Rita Bozi is a highly experienced trauma-informed facilitator, psychedelic therapist, author, and director of Brilliant Healing, In. Matt Russell is a private practice psychotherapist and scholar with a background in Spanish Literature and intergenerational trauma studies. Matt interviews Rita about her novel “When I Was Better” which is based on her parents' experiences during and after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, blending personal and historical narratives to explore themes of trauma, survival, and healing.Rita shares her journey in writing the novel, describing it as a complex and healing process that took nine years and ten drafts to complete. Initially, she was loyal to the real-life events of her family's history, struggling to fictionalize the story, but eventually embraced creative freedom which allowed her to deepen her characters and more fully explore their experiences. The process also involved confronting and processing her own anger and trauma, facilitated by psychedelic therapies with ayahuasca and ketamine. Through these experiences, Rita was able to soften her portrayal of her parents, bringing a more nuanced and empathetic view to their characters in her novel.Matt, Rita, and Dr. T delve into the significance of the Hungarian Revolution and Rita explains the profound impact of these events on her family and her need to understand and portray this historical and emotional landscape accurately. The interview touches on broader themes of intergenerational trauma and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression, highlighting the importance of kindness and empathy in healing. Through the novel, Rita aims to honor her parents' struggles while exploring the broader human capacity for both cruelty and compassion.“But it wasn't until I sat with ketamine that I felt into my essential nature and that my essential nature was kindness. And from there I started to build a practice around kindness and I started to decolonize. I started to understand what does it mean to decolonize this brutality, so that then I could, instead of commanding people or … demanding change and demanding that people heal or demand that people behave a certain way, I started to understand more deeply that we behave the way we do because of what's happened to us. In understanding that and understanding, you know, what really happened to my parents, what really happened to my brother, what really happened to my ancestors, and embodying that… then I could start developing a sense of kindness, you know?” - Rita Bozi__About Rita Bozi:Raised by Hungarian refugees, Rita is a Somatic Relational trauma and psychedelic-informed Facilitator, a multidisciplinary creator, playwright, and retired professional actor and dancer. It feels like I'm flying all the time while running my software company. Every month, I'm going somewhere to meet clients. It's standard practice until, out of nowhere, I have my first anxiety attack. These attacks become serious and start happening randomly on different days at different times of the day. Weeks and months go by, and every single time I step on the plane, an attack triggers. While I've been flying on planes my entire life, I find myself having to take medication just to step on to an aircraft. As I'm searching everywhere looking for answers to get to the bottom of what's going on, I meet with a therapist, Dr. Keith. He asks me a simple question: “Kymberlee, do you think pilots have a fear of flying?” Sounds like a preposterous question, right? So I respond: “Of course not!” Then he advises me to ask the pilot on my next flight what their favorite thing is about flying. I do exactly that. With my heart racing, I board my next flight and ask if I can say a quick hello to the pilot. As I'm having a conversation in the cockpit with this pilot, I quickly learn that his favorite part is the landings. Suddenly, I go from having heart palpitations to laughing and smiling and learning so much about the craft of flying. In the months (and flights) that follow my perspective on flying changes so much that eventually I don't even need to take the medication anymore. His story changes my story. Speaking of aviation and stories, my special guest, Reyné O'Shaughnessy, is a retired commercial airline pilot and captain with intimate knowledge of mental health. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, you'll hear about the importance of changing the story within the aviation world (and beyond) as it relates to mental health, as well as get answers to questions like: How does the story within the aviation industry regarding changes in mental wellness policy need shifting? And why is it so important to share your stories publicly in the world? What you will learn in this episode: Why the collective mental health story in aviation needs to change How we can adopt a better story through shared responsibility How to prevent your mental health from turning into a story of mental illness Who is Reyné? Captain (ret.) Reyné O'Shaughnessy stands as a prominent figure within the aviation industry for her unwavering dedication to both pilots and the aviation industry. With a remarkable 35-year career as a commercial airline pilot, she has accumulated a vast reservoir of experience, expertise, and proficiency with flight time exceeding 10,000 hours on heavy jet aircraft. Beyond the cockpit, Captain O'Shaughnessy has devoted over a decade to honing her skills as an aviation strategist, with a specific focus on health and mental wellness. Her dedication led her to become a certified practitioner in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) from Brown University. She founded Piloting 2 Wellbeing and co-founded The Aviation Health and Wellbeing Institute, and her holistic approach to aviation has solidified her position as a trailblazer and influencer within the industry. In addition, Captain O'Shaughnessy is the author of the best-selling book, This Is Your Captain Speaking: What You Should Know About Your Pilot's Mental Health. Her insights have been featured on reputable platforms such as Fox News, NBC News, CBS/KDKA, and AOPA, and she is a sought-after speaker at conferences worldwide. Dr Britton considers the overlaps between spiritual experience and mental illness, why deconstructing the sense of self in search of enlightenment can lead to lasting psychological damage, and questions if experiences of fear are a necessary part of the meditative path. Dr Britton also covers the neurobiology of attention, reveals the hidden religious messaging woven into mindfulness techniques such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and shares how she deals with the negative responses from meditation enthusiasts towards her work. … Video version: https://www.guruviking.com/podcast/ep250-when-meditation-goes-wrong-dr-willoughby-britton Also available on Youtube, iTunes, & Spotify – search ‘Guru Viking Podcast'. … Topics include: 00:00 - Intro 01:15 - Dr Britton's upbringing and early interest in consciousness 03:58 - Friend's suicide and a life crisis 05:02 - Powerful high dose psychedelic experiences 08:46 - Influence of peak experiences 09:28 - Operative mechanism of Dr Britton's epiphany 11:04 - Is redefinition of the self necessary for awakening? 11:50 - What is the ‘self'? 13:31 - A caveat 14:19 - Many possible modifications to the sense of self and identity 18:18 - What do Buddhists really mean when they talk about no-self? 19:01 - Surprising disagreement between Buddhist sects 19:48 - Lack on consensus about the end goal in Buddhism 20:47 - Awakening or mental illness? 24:01 - Cultural differences in what constitutes mental health 24:58 - Cultural influences and personal goals 26:39 - When meditation goes wrong 28:35 - When no-self experiences lead to negative outcomes 30:46 - The importance of connection 32:14 - Strategic ambiguity of enlightenment 34:34 - The enlightenment fantasy 35:23 - Absorbing a world view from meditation instructions 36:31 - How to assess your meditation practice 39:04 - Stealth Buddhism 40:31 - Hidden frames of meditation techniques 41:37 - Metaphysics of MBSR 45:18 - Market forces and religion as product 47:50 - Negative reactions to Dr Britton's work 51:48 - Does Dr Britton's work threaten meditators? 54:39 - Nasty emails and internet comments 56:08 - Is Dr Britton upset by the negativity? 57:31 - What is the goal of Dr Britton's work? 59:51 - Why look for problems? 01:01:07 - How often do meditation related problems happen? 01:03:03 - Founding Cheetah House to help meditators in crisis 01:04:29 - Is fear necessary on the spiritual path? 01:06:20 - The neurobiology of attention 01:07:43 - Attention and arousal 0110:12 - The phenomenology and meaning of fear in Buddhist meditation 01:11:46 - Is fear part of the path? 01:13:10 - Buddhism doesn't have its story straight 01:14:30 - The desire for a comprehensive world view … To find out more about Dr Willoughby Britton, visit: - https://www.cheetahhouse.org/ - https://www.brown.edu/public-health/mindfulness/people/willoughby-britton-phd … For more interviews, videos, and more visit: - www.guruviking.com Music ‘Deva Dasi' by Steve James

MBEL has been conceived as a collaborative project, which leaves behind the patriarchal and hierarchical power structures often found in Buddhism. Authority is distributed throughout the community of practitioners rather than concentrated in an expert. This program can be freely shared with anyone who is interested in doing this work. This program is appropriate for anyone interested in the topic, regardless of any previous experience.MBEL is founded on early Buddhist formulas and lists such as: the four foundations of mindfulness, the four tasks, the four efforts, and the four immeasurables. In the same way that mindfulness-based therapies such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) are inspired by Buddhist contemplative practices, MBEL draws inspiration from the ethical values and philosophical frameworks of early Buddhist thought. Although Buddhist in inspiration and origin, MBEL shares neither the religious and metaphysical commitments of the Buddhist religion nor its authoritarian hierarchies of power. MBEL is a secular program.REGISTER HERE

Chronic pain can be debilitating, so we often look for ways to mask or medicate the symptoms. Unfortunately, the medical approach to pain management can sometimes lead to even worse problems. There is now a growing body of research showing the efficacy of mindfulness practices where you literally observe and accept your pain, rather than cover it up. It isn't a panacea, but the clinical results are significant enough that mindfulness is now increasingly being integrated into hospital approaches. This week's guest is a medical doctor turned mindfulness teacher and trainer.
