Text: Deuteronomy 6-8; 15; 18; 29-30; 34 Supplemental Text: The Third Thousand Years chapter 20 BYU Lecture 23: Finally, the Lord declares that Israel is now ready to enter Canaan, the Promised Land. Moses is 120 years old and is in the last year of his life. He has also recently lost Aaron and Miriam. Moses takes the hosts of Israel on a march towards the east of the Dead Sea, avoiding the Anaks. Along their march, God instructs Moses not to fight against three groups or tribes: the Edomites (children of Abraham through Esau, known today as Arabs), nor the Moabites or Ammonites (both groups descended from Abraham through Lot). The story of the fallen prophet Balaam is told and how he colluded with the Midianites to corrupt the youth of Israel. Moses is told that he is allowed to see the Promised Land but he cannot enter it. In his final 30 days of mortality, Moses devotes himself to record the book of Deuteronomy – God's Laws. Moses is translated and Joshua takes the lead as the Israelites march into the promised land. The miracle of the river divided. Manna is now stopped. Joshua puts all Israel under covenant to God by circumcising the men and then marches around Jericho and the walls fall.
It's possible this year's running of the iconic annual Bluff Oyster Festival may be the last. Only half of the four-thousand tickets to the event, taking place on May 23, have been sold. Normally it's a sell out by now. Festival chair John Edminstin told Mike Hosking there were early fears about an oyster shortage, but that's eased. He says unless there's a freak storm in the next couple of weeks, there'll be five boats fishing for oysters right up until the festival opening. CTL Script/ Top Stories of January 16th Publish Date: January 16th Pre-Roll: From the Ingles Studio Welcome to the Award-Winning Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast Today is Friday, January 16th and Happy Birthday to Albert Pujols I’m Chris Culwell and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Times Journal Woodstock elected officials sworn in to serve new terms Kemp to build roads, bridges during final year as Georgia governor Canton man charged in Christmas shopping center fire Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on raw milk We’ll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you’re looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Commercial: INGLES 1 STORY 1: Woodstock elected officials sworn in to serve new terms Woodstock kicked off the week with a swearing-in ceremony on Monday, welcoming back familiar faces and appointing new ones to key boards. Municipal Court Judge Robert Tidwell swore in Mayor Michael Caldwell and Council Members Warren Johnson (Ward 1), Colin Ake (Ward 3), and Brian Wolfe (Ward 5)—all re-elected in November. Caldwell also administered oaths to Lisa Morton, Spencer Nix, and Melissa Madigan for the Downtown Development Authority, and Rob Hogan, Ali Najafi, and Chase Roth for the Planning Commission. “Public trust is no small thing,” Caldwell said. “Congratulations to everyone stepping up to serve.” The council also made appointments to the Ethics Board and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. STORY 2: Kemp to build roads, bridges during final year as Georgia governor Gov. Brian Kemp isn’t coasting through his final year in office. Nope, he’s dropping over $2 billion into highway upgrades south and east of Atlanta—part of a $6 billion infrastructure push during his tenure. Speaking at the Georgia Chamber’s Eggs and Issues event Wednesday, Kemp credited “conservative budgeting” for making it all possible. “While some politicians just talk about affordability,” he said, “we’re actually doing something.” Big-ticket items? $1.8 billion for express lanes on I-75 in Henry County, $200 million to overhaul Georgia 316, and $250 million for local road grants. Oh, and $50 million to tackle homelessness ahead of the World Cup. Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and House Speaker Jon Burns are laser-focused on taxes—property, income, you name it. Burns even floated eliminating homestead property taxes statewide. It’s a busy year for Georgia politics, to say the least. STORY 3: Canton man charged in Christmas shopping center fire A Canton teenager is facing serious charges after allegedly setting fire to a vacant shopping center on Christmas Day. Firefighters were called to the Canton Village shopping center on Marietta Road around 3:15 p.m., finding smoke pouring from the roof and flames inside. Crews worked quickly—hoses out, building searched—but thankfully, no one was inside, and no injuries were reported. After an investigation involving fire officials, Canton Police, and the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, 19-year-old Blake Louis Bishop was arrested Tuesday. He’s charged with first-degree arson, second-degree criminal damage, and loitering. The city-owned shopping center, set for demolition, required 30 firefighters and hours to fully extinguish the blaze. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 2 STORY 4: Morales breaks record, Gold returns for New Years Kickoff meet At the New Year’s Kickoff swim meet, held Jan. 9-11 at UGA’s Ramsey Center, Mila Morales of Chattahoochee Gold shattered a 19-year-old club record in the girls’ 8U 50-yard freestyle. Her time? A blazing 30.95 seconds, dethroning Lauren Case’s long-standing mark. The meet wasn’t scored—more of a post-holiday tune-up—but Chattahoochee Gold swimmers still made waves. Ava Gana stole the show with five wins, including the 12U 400 IM (4:56.31) and 200 backstroke (2:20.22). Meanwhile, Ella Malave snagged gold in the 13+ 100 breaststroke (1:05.96), and Bryston Burks dropped six seconds to win the 12U 200 breaststroke (2:48.08). Plenty of top-10 finishes, too—this team’s on fire. FALCONS: The Atlanta Falcons officially introduced Matt Ryan as their new president of football on Tuesday, and honestly, it feels like a full-circle moment. At the press conference in Flowery Branch, Ryan—who spent 14 seasons as the face of the franchise—spoke about his “unfinished business” with the team. “Since I was drafted, my mission’s been the same: help this organization win championships. We came close, had some success, but I believe we’ll get there,” he said. After retiring and working as a CBS Sports analyst, Ryan said he wasn’t looking for a new job—unless it was with the Falcons. Now, he’ll report directly to owner Arthur Blank, focusing on hiring a head coach and GM who share a unified vision. STORY 5: Georgia GOP senators target Raffensperger over voter registration lists A group of Georgia Republican senators is pressuring Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to hand over the state’s unredacted voter registration list to the Trump administration—a move Raffensperger flatly opposes. His reasoning? State law. Sharing private voter details like Social Security numbers, birthdates, and driver’s license info is a no-go, he says. The DOJ, meanwhile, has been requesting voter lists from all 50 states, claiming it’s about ensuring accuracy. They even sued Georgia last month over the issue. The Senate resolution, led by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’ allies, is mostly symbolic. But it accuses Raffensperger of “obstruction” for only providing a public version of the list. Raffensperger’s office fired back, saying he’s already complied as far as state law allows. “He won’t break the law or risk voters’ private information,” his office said. The DOJ’s lawsuit heads to federal court in Macon later this month. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on raw milk Commercial: We’ll have closing comments after this. In this episode, Alyssa and Nadia return to the mic after a brief hiatus, with Nadia deep in the "finals hole" of her semester. They dive into a viral national news story involving a student at the University of Oklahoma who received a zero on a psychology paper, sparking a heated debate about academic standards, freedom of speech, and religious discrimination.Nadia breaks down the controversy: a student wrote a reaction paper arguing that gender norms are God's plan and that deviating from them is harmful, rather than using the empirical evidence required by the assignment. The professor contended that the paper failed to answer the prompt, relied on personal ideology over science, and was offensive to a group of people. The situation escalated when the student mobilized conservative groups, leading to the graduate instructor being placed on administrative leave. The conversation shifts to the broader implications of this event. Alyssa expresses frustration at how political polarization creates a "constant state of attack," comparing the national mood to crossing a freeway with cars coming at you rather than relaxing on a beach. They discuss the physical toll of this division, with Alyssa noting the conversation actually gave her a "sour tummy".They also explore the concept of "echo chambers." Nadia reflects on how social media algorithms reinforce our existing beliefs, making it shocking when we encounter extreme opposing views in real life. The episode concludes with a coping strategy for navigating a divided world: instead of trying to fix the massive global problems, Alyssa advocates for focusing on being a good human to the small circle of people immediately around you.TakeawaysUsing personal religious ideology to argue against empirical evidence in a scientific setting is not "best practice" and can lead to academic failureSocial media "echo chambers" can blind us to how differently other people in the country think and livePolitical polarization puts many people in a constant state of "fight or flight," similar to the stress of dodging trafficViral outrage can have real-world consequences, such as an instructor being placed on administrative leaveWhen a problem feels too big to fix, the best approach is often to focus on spreading positivity within your own small circleEven well-intentioned debates about social issues can cause physical symptoms of stressAcademic prompts usually require answering specific questions, not just writing an op-ed on personal beliefs Chapters0:10–0:39 – Intro: Back from Hiatus and Finals Week Stress0:40–2:15 – The Viral Story: 0/25 on a Psychology Paper4:20–6:32 – The Professor's Feedback: Empirical Evidence vs. Ideology 6:33–7:56 – The Aftermath: Instructor on Administrative Leave 7:57–9:31 – Analyzing the Quality of the Writing 9:32–11:04 – The Human Cost of Political Polarization 11:05–13:31 – Living in Echo Chambers and Cultural Division13:32–16:03 – The "Freeway" Analogy: Living in a Constant State of Stress 16:04–18:47 – Social Media Propaganda and Finding "Your People" 18:48–20:08 – Alyssa's Solution: Focus on Your Small Circle20:09–20:50 – Looking Ahead: Nadia's Final Year of College

In this episode, Ryan Steuer of Magnify Learning details a five-year implementation plan for launching a Project-Based Learning (PBL) movement in a large district, specifically focusing on 13 middle schools. While the example is niche, the process is designed to be customizable and scalable for districts of any size. The episode emphasizes the importance of systematic, structural change, starting with district leadership, and leveraging the "innovation curve" to ensure widespread adoption and sustainability. Key Takeaways & Implementation Steps: Magnify Learning & PBL Networks Magnify Learning has over a decade of experience in PBL, stemming from a grassroots collaboration among educators. We are launching free PBL Networks in October to provide a safe space for educators to process ideas, collaborate, and share best practices across different PBL niches (e.g., PBL and CTE, PBL and STEM, PBL and Maker Spaces, PBL and SEL, PBL and UDL). Find more at pblnetworks.com. Collaboration is key: You should never do PBL alone. Foundation: District Leadership & Goals The implementation must start with district leadership, not a top-down mandate. Involve both secondary and elementary leaders from the outset to align mindsets and processes. Clearly define the goals of PBL for the district and individual middle schools, aligning them with the district's mission, vision, and "profile of a graduate". District leaders must model student-centered practices; principal meetings should be collaborative, not "sit and get". If district leadership isn't ready to collaborate, the initiative needs to pause and address that foundational work. Building the District PBL Team & Plan Establish a district PBL design team of 6-10 central office members. Dedicate two-day design sessions to develop the comprehensive 5-year implementation plan. Go "beyond the why" to articulate the district's collective purpose for this work. Leveraging the Innovation Curve Identify innovators: Map all 13 middle schools onto an innovation curve to identify which are "innovators," "early majority," and "late majority". This is crucial for guiding the timeline. Focus on "crossing the chasm": The biggest challenge is bridging the gap between early adopters/innovators and the early majority. This is why a 5-year plan is essential. Define roles for innovators: The initial 1-2 innovator schools will implement PBL first, transparently, and are tasked with creating resources (like group contracts, planning forms) for subsequent cohorts. This empowers them and provides tangible tools for others. Customized Implementation: While the process is systematic, each school's implementation will be customized based on their readiness (e.g., starting with a specific grade level, subject, or wall-to-wall). The "best way" is what the school's leadership and teachers are most ready for. Planned Supports & Training (Before Launch) Leadership Training: Innovator school leaders will receive training similar to the central office team, focusing on creating school-level leadership teams, structures, and processes for PBL sustainability. Teacher Training: Multi-day training, including coaching, to build a PBL mindset and culture, not just mechanics. This includes: Leadership: Design Days, Deeper Practice, Sustainability Days (over 3 years). Teachers: PBL Jump Start (theoretical unit creation), PBL Advanced (reflection, curriculum mapping), and PBL Certification (by end of Year 3 for sustainability). Pre-planning is paramount: All training, coaching, and support pathways must be planned out before the official launch to avoid "shooting from the hip" and to assure the early/late majority there's a clear plan. The 5-Year Implementation Timeline (Example for 13 Middle Schools): Year 1: District: Share vision and 5-year timeline with building leaders, have 1-on-1 conversations with innovators. Explain the "why" behind the phased approach. Cohort 1 (Innovators - e.g., 2 schools): Establish school leadership teams, build 3-year building-level plans, launch initial PBL units, and make work public through "exposes" (showcases) to invite other schools. Staff attends a PBL "jump start" over the summer. Year 2: District: Form a PBL advisory team, identify "bright spots," train principals on key leadership needs, and begin reviewing administrator evaluations and aspiring leadership pathways to align with PBL. Cohort 1: Leadership teams conduct "roses, buds, thorns" reflections, addressing teacher needs (e.g., schedule, PD, evaluations). Teachers continue public showcases and create district-wide tools (rubrics, contracts). Teachers attend "PBL Advanced" over the summer. Cohort 2 (Early Majority - e.g., 8 schools): Begin with leadership team design days and teacher "jump start" training, then implement and showcase work. Year 3: District: Invest in the PBL advisory team, train principals on evolving needs, continually share the vision, and introduce refined administrative evaluations and aspiring leadership pathways. Cohort 1: Leadership teams focus on "sustainability days" to ensure processes outlive individuals. Teachers collect data, share artifacts, publicize work through news and district channels, and achieve PBL Certification over the summer to train new hires. Cohort 2: In their second year of implementation. Cohort 3 (Late Majority - e.g., 3 schools): Begin with leadership team design days and teacher "jump start" training, having observed 10 other schools and gained insights. Year 4: District: Plan for sustaining the work beyond year five, including establishing PBL district coaches (ideally two for mentorship and continuity). Cohort 1: Lead and collaborate with other schools. Cohort 2: In their final year, getting PBL certified. Cohort 3: In their second year (PBL Advanced). Year 5 (Final Year of Initial Rollout): District: Administrative evaluations and aspiring leadership pathways are fully established. New "normals" are in place. All Middle Schools: Every middle school has a leadership team and PBL certified teachers, ensuring sustainable structures and processes. Schedules, evaluations, and PLCs are synergistic with PBL. Leaders: Continuously invest in their people and lead, rather than just manage. Community Partners: Integrated as a normal part of school, helping shape the school's positive narrative. Outcome: Middle schools become models of innovation, inspiring PBL adoption in elementary and high schools. Overarching Philosophy of Change "Go slow to go fast": Rushing implementation leads to foundational problems. Innovation starts at the top and must be modeled. Leaders must "cross the chasm" by meeting the early majority on their terms, providing clear plans and supports. This is a long game to fundamentally change mindsets, structures, and redefine educational norms, ultimately growing people and systems to achieve desired outcomes for learners. It is challenging but doable and totally worth it. Resources and links: pblnetworks.com

Aaron Rodgers says that this may not be his last year after all. What would it take for the Steelers to keep Rodgers instead of drafting a quarterback in the first round next April?
Mike Florio joins the conversation. He says that Father Time is undefeated and there shouldn't be too much looking into it if he has a good year. He brings up the fact that Brett Favre's second year in Minnesota was a disaster. We are once again talking about a WR2 for the Steelers. The Steelers have four quarterbacks on the roster. What is Mike's reaction to the Kenny Pickett trade?
Matt Davies sits down with Sam Collins to discuss his Nottingham Forest story as he went from playing in the FA Youth Cup final in front of more than 60,000 people and training with the first team to breaking his leg and suffering an 'awful final year' at the club. We discuss his time at Forest and how is now rebuilding his career further down the football pyramid. It's a great interview that's well worth your time. #nffc #nottinghamforest
