Jeannine Otis has been a substantial voice in music for over 40 years, effortlessly performing and recording in jazz, classical, dance, gospel and pop genres. She has toured as a vocalist with great musicians who have served as mentors including Grover Washington Jr., Arthur Prysock, Kool and the Gang, Joe Chambers and Donald Byrd, Rudy Mwangozi, Finnish Jazz composer Heikki Sarmanto and Vishnu Wood and his band Safari East. Jeannine appeared on Broadway in "This Joint is Jumpin" and toured throughout Europe as the Strawberry Woman in "Porgy and Bess," singing in many of the great opera houses including those in Rome, Cologne, Venice, and Modena. Her recording MAGIC SONG with Heikki Sarmanto was re-released by The Warner Group worldwide in 2017, and her selections are included in over 12 jazz compilations. Jeannine's passion for working in communities led to fruitful collaborations with Eve Ensler and celebrated composer Elizabeth Swados. For the last 30 years, Jeannine has also served as Music Director at Manhattan's iconic St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery, the second-oldest church in the city. When I knew that music was in my blood. How I ended up recording rap before anyone knew what rap was. Why I cherish the work I do in diverse communities. How my role at St. Mark's Church saved my life. https://jeannineotis.com/ (https://jeannineotis.com/)
The European Union was established as a peace project to reconcile France and Germany, but over the last three decades the EU has also worked on creating peace and prosperity abroad. It has mediated between conflicting parties, deployed peacekeepers and provided aid and peace-building support. Yet, in the last couple of years the EU has found it more difficult to implement such policies. What are the main challenges the EU faces in formulating and implementing foreign and security policy? This JOINT podcast discusses three of them: within the EU, various countries and groups increasingly block the consensus on peace-building policies; conflicts in Europe's neighbourhood have become more protracted and fragmented and therefore more difficult to solve; the EU faces increasing competition from other major actors such as Russia and China, when attempting to establish peace. The podcast is hosted by Hylke Dijkstra, Associate Professor at Maastricht University, who discusses challenges to EUFSP with Gergana Noutcheva, Associate professor at Maastricht University, Agnès Levallois, Senior Research Fellow at the Foundation for Strategic Research, and Assem Dandashly, Assistant Professor at Maastricht University.
Richard Maltby, Jr., director and lyricist of such shows as STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW, BABY, and the multi-award-winning Fats Waller tribute AIN'T MISBEHAVIN', discusses his career from his earliest beginnings. He reflects on his work with composer David Shire, having their songs recorded by Barbra Streisand, and the challenges of adapting Fats Waller's music for the theater. Featured songs: “We Start Today,” “Autumn,” “Starting Here, Starting Now,” “Just Across the River,” “I Don't Remember Christmas,” “Handful of Keys,” “This Joint is Jumpin',” “What Could Be Better?” and “The Story Goes On.” Originally produced and broadcast in 1986.
