My guest today is Joshua Rosenblum, author of Closer than Ever — The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire. This terrific new book chronicles the sixty-six-year (and counting) partnership of two of the most gifted songwriters of our time, giving full behind-the-scenes accounts of their musicals interspersed with deep-dive analyses of standout individual numbers. Among the well-known Broadway figures who feature prominently in the Maltby/Shire story are Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Michael Stewart, Francis Ford Coppola, Susan Stroman, John Weidman, Charles Strouse, Garth Drabinsky, Jason Robert Brown, and Jonathan Tunick. Using his experiences as a Broadway conductor, music journalist, and professor of musical theater composition, as well as his long-term personal and professional acquaintance with both Maltby and Shire, Joshua Rosenblum is uniquely suited to chronicle their lives, careers, and creative output. The songwriters, both of whom are engaging and articulate in describing what they do, are quoted liberally throughout the book in exclusive interviews, creating the impression that one is spending time with two inspiring creative artists who happen to be great company.   Joshua Rosenblum teaches Composing for Musical Theater at Yale University and Conducting at New York University. As a composer/lyricist, he wrote the scores to the off-Broadway musicals Fermat's Last Tango, Bush is Bad, and Einstein's Dreams (four Drama Desk Nominations). He has conducted fourteen Broadway and off-Broadway shows and has performed as pianist with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, the City Center Encores! Orchestra, and the American Symphony. A longtime contributor of reviews and features to Opera News, Rosenblum is a summa cum laude graduate of Yale College and holds a master's degree in Piano from the Yale School of Music. We're having a serious The Conversation about Gene Hackman's spite, John Cazale's killer filmography, Harrison Ford's babyface, the recently passed Teri Garr's ability to elevate everything she's in, and David Shire's amazing minimalist score, before running through the plot of this top-tier character study masquerading as a mystery. Spoilers within! This movie's prescience really cannot really be overstated. We're here to discuss how it locked into the zeitgeist of the 70's and predicted our current way of life, and how it not only predicted Watergate, but technical advisor Martin Kaiser's life. Plus, is The Conversation part of a franchise??? Find out here!Next time: the holiday season's already here!? We're upset about it. Hi this is David Armstrong. You may be wondering where I and Broadway Nation have been over the past few weeks. As you will hear, I have been battling a wicked case of bronchitis and today is the first day in ten days that I have been able to talk even enough to croak out this brief message. At the end of the summer, I had been planning to take a few weeks off from podcasting anyway, and this bronchitis has just jumpstarted that break. So here's the plan: On September 19 Broadway Nation will return for an exciting new season featuring a fascinating line-up of authors who have written some amazing new books. We will start with author Thomas Hischak who will kick us off with a discussion of Song Of The Season — Outstanding Broadway Songs since 1891. In the weeks that follow, you will meet Laurie Winer talking about Oscar Hammerstein and the Invention of The Musical, Doug Reside on his book Fixing the Musical — How Technologies Shaped The Broadway Repertory, Trevor Boffone who has written about TikTok Broadway. Dustyn Martincich and Pheobe Rumsay will discuss Dance In Musical Theatre — A History of the Body In Movement, Christopher Connelly on Helen Morgan: The original Torch Singer and Ziegfeld's Last Star, and Joshua Rosenblum and his book Closer Than Ever — The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby, Jr. and David Shire. And that's just the beginning! As always Albert Evans will join me for some deep dives into Broadway's past and, no doubt, there will be previews of my upcoming book. I guarantee it will all be worth the wait. In the meantime, you are invited to join more than 2600 fans of this podcast in the Broadway Nation Facebook Group where every day you can find posts and videos about the Broadway musical and Immigrant, Jewish, Queer and Black artist who invented it.  See you soon! This episode's origin comes from my time recovering from gallbladder surgery last month. I was looking for something to watch when I saw Richard Donner's TIMELINE on my Plex server. I hadn't watched the film in over 20 years... 20 YEARS?!?!?!?!... and so I thought I'd put it on to see if it was as bad as I remembered. It wasn't all that bad, but Brian Tyler's score really irritated me. So, after watching the film, I listened to both Tyler's replacement score and Jerry Goldsmith's rejected score and decided to write some notes. Well, you know me; I ended up writing about 700 words. For a brief moment, I thought about resurrecting my blog, but I hate sharing my writing, so I decided to turn it into a podcast episode. As I continued to write, one thing led to another, and before I knew it, my script was 2814 words long. In addition to writing about TIMELINE, I also wrote about action music, which led me to write about action cues that subverted the norm using two examples by Michael Giacchino (STAR TREK and MEDAL OF HONOR: FRONTLINE). Then I remembered an interview from the early 80s where Jerry Goldsmith talked about the function of film music and writing a specific action cue for the 1971 film, WILD ROVERS. So, I wrote about that. I then remembered to write about my experience at TriCon 2024 here in Kitchener last winter and discuss my newfound appreciation of Graham Revell's THE CROW. I then concluded with a birthday shout-out to David Shire, who turned 87 on July 3rd, the day of this recording. So, after finishing my FAVOURITE SCORES OF 2023 episodes, I recorded and edited this new episode, which I'm happy to share with you today. I really enjoyed the entire process of producing this episode. I liked having the opportunity to inform and educate by using specific examples instead of just doing what I've been doing over the past, however long it's been. This type of show feels more like what I do on Randy Andrew's THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS (aka SOUNDTRACK ALLEY) than a traditional CSR episode. Anyway, let me know what you think. Also, the name is temporary. I had no idea what to call what I was doing so I just called it SOUNDTRACK POTPOURRI, which is so NPR lame. Running a war economy is a profitable proposition just so long as you can keep winning. However, whether we're winning or losing, some people in this country have become very rich from it. Our politicians keep being reelected because of our Military Industrial Corps. and their executives ensure the U.S. Congress passes Defence Budgets that are the largest in the World even if we lose wars. If we lose, it's Americans who feel the cost because a bread-and-butter economy suffers. We spent a trillion dollars for 20 years in Afghanistan, leaving $80 billion of weapons behind, but no one was accountable. MUSIC Marco Beltrami, Burkhard Dallwitz, David Shire

There won't be any escaping from our future. Corruption in all of its various forms will result in unimaginable pain for Americans. In the near future, we may see rank and file in our military unwilling to follow orders or worse sabotage resources like ships and aircraft. It will reach into our lowest ranks all the way up the chain of command. Suicide rates are rising in our military and those rates will change to sabotage and outright rebellion. Dana and Tom and Adam Hitchcock (The Streaming Circuit podcast) revisit the true crime thriller, Zodiac (2007): directed by David Fincher, written by James Vanderbilt, music by David Shire, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., and Mark Ruffalo.Plot Summary: In "Zodiac," director David Fincher crafts a meticulously layered thriller that unravels the cryptic enigma of the Zodiac Killer, a real-life serial murderer who terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The film weaves together the lives of three individuals – a tenacious newspaper cartoonist (Jake Gyllenhaal), a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo), and a brilliant but tormented crime reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) – all united in their pursuit of the elusive Zodiac.Fincher masterfully captures the haunting atmosphere of the era, immersing the audience in a world of paranoia and uncertainty. The film also expertly navigates the shifting dynamics between obsession, professional duty, and personal sacrifice, as the characters become entangled in the web of the Zodiac's cryptic messages and gruesome crimes.Gyllenhaal delivers a compelling performance as the cartoonist-turned-amateur sleuth, conveying the psychological toll of an obsession that threatens to consume him; Ruffalo brings a gritty authenticity to his role, reflecting the frustration and determination of law enforcement; and Downey injects a dose of wit and charisma into the mix, embodying the pitfalls of journalistic ambition."Zodiac" transcends the conventions of a traditional crime thriller, delving into the psychological toll of an unsolved mystery on those who dedicate their lives to solving it. It's a chilling exploration of the human cost of obsession and the lingering shadows of unresolved mysteries. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast) or find our Facebook page at Greatest Movie of All-Time Podcast. For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/zodiac-2007-revisit-ft-adam-hitchcockFor the entire rankings list so far, go to:Full Graded List - Greatest Movies of All-Time Ronny Duncan Studios

We're wrapping up our History Lessons series with an episode about two young, everyday reporters at the Washington Post that just happened to stumble on the greatest political coverup in United States history. But while Watergate became a national disgrace, it started off with two guys pulling at threads. That story is masterfully weaved by one of our greatest screenwriters, William Goldman, into a political thriller that's somehow more compelling and tense than movies where the characters are in literal peril. Sure, Woodward and Bernstein uncovered a massive criminal conspiracy in the highest echelons of power. This movie, though, is not just about that, but about how two nobodies somehow revealed that story to the world, and the mistakes they made along the way. And that is a subject that's worth the price of admission. This week we're headed to North Africa, for a story of will and determination for freedom that's unlike any other. From 1954 to 1962, Algeria fought a tough, complicated war for independence from colonial rule from France, a war that upended the French political system and began a long, difficult process of African decolonization. That's a lot to try to pack into a single film, but director Gillo Pontecorvo does so with absolute perfect thought and foresight. THE CONVERSATION is remembered as one of the greatest films of all time, and it is. There's so much to say about it, we welcomed Seth Zarate (https://twitter.com/snzarate) back to help us sift through our thoughts, hands on the dials, focusing on the juiciest nuggets from Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece. Gene Hackman's Harry Caul is a man defined by his ignorance, believing he can observe and report his way through life, even if those observations and reports sometimes have a body count. In this episode, we break down how THE CONVERSATION uses a tense thriller plot setup to tell a much more incisive story about leaving your mark on the world without ever meaning to – or leaving with some marks of your own. We also talk about Harry's fraying mental state, his obsession with jazz, and his Catholic upbringing… but you know what? You don't really care what we talk about. You just want a nice, fat recording. Listen in on this discussion you weren't there for and had no input on but, as witness to it, have a responsibility to interpret and incorporate into your life from this point forward! Hello again and welcome back to the podcast! In this somewhat "super-sized" installment of my multi-part trek through the music of Science Fiction cinema, I attempt to close out the decade of the 1980's. The previous installment in this series focused on titles from the years 1980-82. Here, I cover the remaining years of the decade with examples of the competing and sometimes collaborative film music trends - pop & electronic and orchestral.    The 80's were a peak time of musical surprises, somewhat akin to the 1960's when we heard a mix of traditional orchestral scores, jazz, pop & rock-based colors as well as avant garde music derived from concert techniques. Following its revival, the large scale orchestral approach continued reigning over much of cinematic Science Fiction, now bolstered by electronic and choral elements. Parallel to this were the experiments in synth and pop styles, connecting the genre to present day (for the time) musical trends. To help identify these unique sonic qualities, I'll sample music from TERMINATOR (Brad Fiedel), 2010 (David Shire), ENEMY MINE (Maurice Jarre), KRULL (James Horner), SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE (Elmer Bernstein) and THE ABYSS (Alan Silvestri), amid more!   Stay safe out there, take care of yourself and each other!    Connect with the podcast on Facebook and Twitter: www.facebook.com/ascoretosettle https://twitter.com/score2settlepod   Email the show at ascoretosettlepodcast@gmail.com

Loneliness. Heartache. Emptiness. Isolation. Everything that describes film noir also describes the pandemic. When Melissa Errico first fell down the YouTube rabbit hole of film noir, she didn't expect to find a new passion. After watching hours of tragic femme fatale actresses fall trap to their fate and lonely heroes become disillusioned with society — she realized that the themes of the 1940s weren't so far away after all. A collaboration with the French Institue Alliance Francaise for a film festival further cemented this love for film noir, and most especially for the music these movies featured. Out the Dark presents 17 tracks arranged with the very heart of film noir. Songs like "Laura," "On Vit, On Aime," and "Silent Partner" capture the mystery and intrigue of those classic films. "Farewell My Lovely" showcases a beautiful lyrical setting to the tune of "Marlo's Theme," originally written by David Shire for the movie Farewell My Lovely. And, Melissa gets to star in her very own novella in the music video for "Angel Eyes" — a seven-minute watch that you don't want to miss. Listen to the full episode to hear the stories behind each track on Out of the Dark. Melissa Errico shares how her collaboration with the French Institute began, her vision for the album, and the intriguing tale behind her brand new music video. As of this weekend, the number of people in the U.S. infected with SARS-CoV-2 topped five million, just sixteen days after passing the four million mark on July 23. This weekend's motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota portends that those numbers will continue to rise. Three potential vaccines against the virus have entered phase III clinical trials, in which safety and effectiveness is tested on thousands of healthy people. This stage can take months or years depending on how quickly researchers can detect a difference between the two groups, but some doctors believe that we'll have a vaccine sooner than later. Are we expecting too much from a vaccine? And, what about the expanding group of people afraid to trust any vaccine developed at "warp speed"? Is it time for another lockdown to get things under control until a vaccine is ready? Also this hour: Sending troops into U.S. cities and the recent changes at the U.S. Postal Service are two recent examples of what writer Adam Gopnik sees as an emboldened and authoritarian right encroaching on democratic premises. Meanwhile, he says the rage of an out-of-power left makes liberalism look indifferent. Incremental reform is not enough. GUESTS: Tim Schacker is an infectious disease physician and vice dean for research at the University of Minnesota Medical School Adam Gopnik is an author and a staff writer for The New Yorker. The paperback edition of his most recent book, A Thousand Small Sanities: The Moral Adventures of Liberalism, was published in July. He is also a lyricist and libretto writer.
