Tim Cope is a truly inspiring figure. He has journeyed over 10, 000 km from Mongolia to Hungary on horseback, rowed from southern Siberia to the Arctic Ocean, and cycled for 14 months to get from Moscow to Beijing. He is a filmmaker, an author, and an inspiration to future generations - asking them to look beyond their self-imposed limitations and answer the question, “what if?”. Much of Tim's journey has been alongside his loyal companion Tigon - a Kazakh dog that joined him at a moment of desperation, while he was huddled away for three months, sheltering from a devastating storm, and looking for a way out. For some the thought of packing your bags, loading your bike and riding your bike around the world would be a life long dream. For others a terrifying and overwhelming ordeal. But for Gus Burrell that is a reality. At the beginning of this year, Gus stepped away from his life in the cycling industry of Melbourne Australia, packed his Curve Kevin of Steel and headed off to Japan, and onwards to Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, through to Europe, Lesotho and awaits his next leg into South America. We've teamed up with Ryan Flinn of Curve & the Race Ride Seek Podcast to catch up with Gus on a short break here in the UK. We hear about the remote places he has visited, the personal journey he has been on, the wonderful bike accompanying him, and of course the Bratwurst. Gus is a wonderful human, and we know you will love this one. Cheers Gus! So sit back, grab a brew and enjoy! For 3 years Tim Cope traveled by horseback through the Eurasian steppe from the ancient capital city of Karakoram in Mongolia to the Danube River in Hungary. It was a 6000-mile journey last attempted in the days on Ghengis Khan. For most of the journey he was alone except for his horses and his dog named Tigon. The adventure was a tribute to the nomadic way of life. Along the way he encountered a cast of very interesting characters. Some were thieves not to be trusted yet most proved to be incredibly generous. You can learn more by reading his book titled On The Trail of Genghis Khan, An Epic Journey Through the Land of the Nomads – and from his website timcopejourneys.com. Tim Cope, welcome to The Pursuit Zone.
In words and images Tim Cope shares his epic adventure as he journeyed through the land of the nomads following in the footsteps of Genghis Khan’s conquering armies.
Join ‘long-rider’ Tim Cope for an evening on the Steppe. “Discovery has never been just about mapping new places, it’s about human discoveries, about meeting people and bringing back those learnings to our own society and changing ones perspective of the world.” Tim Cope In June 2004 Tim Cope set off on an epic journey: to ride horses on the of Genghis Khan, a 10,000 kilometre march the length of the Eurasian Steppe, from Karakorum in Mongolia, through Kazakhstan, Russia, Crimea and the Ukraine to Hungary. The journey took him more than three years and led him deep into the fabric of nomad society on the Eurasian steppe. Six months into the trip, a Kazakh nomad concerned that Cope travelled alone, gave him a young dog named Tigon. Cope’s new companion would share his challenges, braving wolves, horse thieves and extreme temperatures, and offer comfort as Tim grieved the tragic loss of his father. Tim earned both Young Adventurer of the Year and Adventurer of the Year awards from the Australian Geographic Society, and Adventurer of the Year from National Geographic. His books and films have inspired audiences worldwide. Join Tim in this recording on Thursday 7 April 2016 for an inspiring talk about his adventures as a ‘long-rider’, a special breed of explorer who travels to discover something of both the cultures they encounter and themselves. Trailblazers Talks, presented by Australian Geographic, brings together Australia’s greatest living explorers for a series of inspirational events. The 21-weeks series was held on Thursday evenings at the Australian Museum from 25 February – 14 July 2016.
Join adventurer Tim Cope on his journey from studying law in Australia to living a life of exploration. Tim has travelled the world by bike, rowing boat, on foot and by horse. A significant influence was his wilderness guide studies in Finland. Tim tells how Finnish “Erä” traditions have influenced his approach to travelling the world. How can one engage in unfamiliar landscapes? How does nature influence the psychology of the people who live off the land? Tim shares his experiences of exploring northern boreal forests and slowly travelling through the vast expanse of steppe and desert between Mongolia and Hungary.
