If you're a longtime Mountain & Prairie listener, then I'm sure you're glad to see that Hampton has joined me for yet another podcast conversation. - Much of Captain Cook's epic third voyage takes place far from the mountains and prairies of the American West, in tropical paradises including Tahiti and Hawaii. Louisa Barnes Pratt played a pioneering role as the first woman to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, beginning her journey in support of her husband Addison Pratt's mission to French Polynesia in 1844 and joining him in 1850. Facing hardships such as scurvy and the challenges of raising four daughters alone, Louisa's resilience was evident in her trek from Nauvoo to winter quarters and her subsequent mission work. Upon Addison's return after six years, the family faced internal conflicts about returning to Polynesia but eventually embarked on a challenging voyage to Tupoy. There, despite language barriers, they engaged in teaching and supporting the local community, with their daughters quickly learning Tahitian. However, political tensions, exemplified by Elder James Brown's expulsion due to anti-government activities, ultimately forced Addison Pratt and his companions to leave in 1852, entrusting the continuation of their mission work to the Polynesian saints. Addison Pratt initiated his missionary endeavors in Tahiti in 1844, marking an earlier start compared to other Polynesian islands, with subsequent missions launched in Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Fiji, and eventually incorporating New Caledonia into the Tahiti Papeete mission by 1968. Overcoming language barriers was a significant challenge; initially, Pratt relied on a local translator and taught in English, but he soon achieved fluency in Tahitian by immersing himself in the culture and interacting closely with native speakers. His dedication led to the baptism of many individuals, including his translator and sailors, demonstrating his commitment to spreading the gospel in the local language. Pratt's story also touches on the complexities of navigating the intertwined roles of government and church in French Polynesia. Despite facing pressure to assume political duties, he remained steadfast in his focus on missionary work, even expressing concerns to Brigham Young about being perceived more as a political leader than a church figure. Tahitians have a unique way of driving. And there's a lot of traffic in Papeete, so their driving behavior is particularly impressive. They yield when they don't need to yield. That's what people with healthy attachment relationships do--they yield when they don't need to yield. Road rage, on the other hand, is the polar opposite and depicts dangerously unhealthy relationships. Jasmin 'Iolani Hakes is the author of the debut novel Hula, available from HarperVia. Hakes was born and raised in Hilo, Hawai'i. Her essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times and the Sacramento Bee. She is the recipient of the Best Fiction award from the Southern California Writers Conference, a Squaw Valley LoJo Foundation Scholarship, a Writing by Writers Emerging Voices fellowship, and a Hedgebrook residency. Dance has always been central to Jasmin's life and creativity. She took her first hula class when she was four years old and danced for the esteemed Halau o Kekuhi and the Tahitian troupe Hei Tiare. She worked throughout college as a professional luau dancer.
