My guest on this episode is Scott Chantler. Scott is the creator of multiple graphic novels for both adults and young readers, including Northwest Passage, Two Generals, which was voted by CBC's Canada Reads as one of the 40 best Canadian non-fiction books of all time, the Three Thieves series (winner of the Joe Shuster Award for Best Comic for Kids), and Bix. He has been the illustrator for many other graphic novels and comic books, and has served as Cartoonist-in-Residence at the University of Windsor, the first cartoonist to be appointed to such a position by a Canadian university. Scott's most recent book is Squire & Knight, published by First Second in 2023. Kirkus Reviews said that Squire & Knight "subverts typical fairy-tale tropes with dry humour” and says the book is “compelling and full of adventure, with a plot as clever as its main character." Scott and I talk about bringing Three Thieves back into print after falling out with that series's original publisher, about how the upcoming sequel to Squire & Knight might be the end of that series, unless he changes his mind—he also talks about how he's not great at longterm career planning—and about how he want to focus on work that is darker and more adult than what he is best known for. Last month violence took over Sudan's capital, Khartoum… it has now spread through the entire country and thousands of civilians have fled from the chaos seeking refuge in Chad, Egypt, and other neighboring countries. Despite a second 72-hour ceasefire, violence has continued. Nations, including the US, have evacuated diplomats and citizens from the country. The violence stems from a long rivalry between two generals. The fighting between the two rivals has resulted in attacks on healthcare facilities and the destruction of the Airport… Civilians trapped in the capital are facing shortages of medicine, fuel, and food and are unable to leave their homes without the threat of being killed. To get a closer look at what is happening in Sudan, on Tuesday Morning we talked with Lynsey Chutel, New York Times reporter from the Johannesburg bureau.

On September 7, Trump spoke out against the revolving door of U.S. weapons sales and endless wars. Pushing back against a report in the Atlantic that he had disparaged fallen U.S. soldiers as “suckers” and “losers,” he accused Pentagon leaders of wanting “to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy.” As part of his claim to be a peacemaker, he announced troop withdrawals from Iraq and has been bragging about the Israel-UAE peace deal. So how do we respond to Trump’s insistence that he is a peacemaker and his accusations that if Biden is elected, we will be stuck in endless wars? Medea speaks with two retired military colonels, Larry Wilkerson and Ann Wright. Larry Wilkerson, a professor at the College of William & Mary, is a retired United States Army Colonel and former chief of staff to United States Secretary of State Colin Powell. Since the end of his military career, Wilkerson has publicly criticized many aspects of the Iraq War, including his own preparation of Powell's presentation to the UN about Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, as well as other aspects of US policy in the Middle East. Ann Wright, a retired U.S. Army Colonel, served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in Sierra Leone, Micronesia, Afghanistan, and Mongolia and received the State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone. She was on the first State Department team to go to Afghanistan and helped reopen the Embassy there in December 2001. On March 19, 2003, the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Ann Wright resigned in opposition and has been working for peace ever since, including with CODEPINK and Veterans for Peace.
In a recent solo cleaning business update, "Slow Down to Speed Up ", I invested 45 minutes in the driveway talking to potential clients. I answered all of their questions and even walked one through a series of questions to use to interview other cleaning services. Her name is Meghann. She hired me for an initial cleaning last week and it went splendid. Meghann was very impressed and wanted to get quotes for a recurring service either biweekly or monthly. I provided those prices within a day. By the end of last week, we agreed on a monthly recurring service for $160. Yay! It pays to slow down. I invested 30 minutes on the phone and it turned into $2,200 in revenue over the first 12 months!I've shared the story of Tom and recycled computer parts for my son and that he hired me for biweekly office cleaning. This week, Tom decided to shut down his office again through COVID and drop cleaning to monthly. No big deal. I'm flexible and my proposal has this exact line in it. Tom was grateful."Contracts: Carfagno Cleaning, Inc DOES NOT require contracts. Our word is our bond. Keep us as long as you're happy! But please, let us know if you ever feel something was missed. A contract-free service allows you to switch between cleaning options as needed."Here are some marketing-related activities from last week. My wife noticed that a local restaurant was looking for cleaning and forwarded the message to me. I immediately recognized it as Sammy's Bullfrog Cafe in Harleysville, a place where I've already submitted a proposal for biweekly cleaning. I thought this would be a good time to reach back out to the owners and say hi. It was no surprise that they asked me to send a requote and if I cleaned kitchens. I replied no to the restaurant kitchens, but resent my original proposal. I got a call from Heather for a biweekly cleaning, thanks to a referral from my realtor BIB group friend Mary Ann Alig. I took my time with Heather and gave her a bunch of information to share with her husband. Lastly, I completed the proposals for the owner of a local cafe, Pam, and the Skippack Animal Hospital! I was really proud of myself as I took my house and office cleaning proposal templates to the next level. Now, it's time to get to the title of this episode. Susan Sloan is a fellow member of my MCBA networking group. She owns Real Health Quotes and recently partnered with her husband Tom on video interviews with local businesses to serve her clients. It's quite ingenious as she can bring experts from various industries to add value to her clients and it brings word-of-mouth power to the experts like myself. We have been trying to schedule this interview since February and finally got it done! Susan prepped me well for two short pieces, where Tom had varying camera angles. The first interview was geared to equip workers and small business owners to go back to work safely with respect to cleanliness. The second interview geared toward moms at home dealing with homeschooling and how to get the kids involved in the cleaning of the house. They were a lot of fun to create. I'm happy to welcome to the show for the first time cartoonist Scott Chantler (@scottchantler) to discuss his new book BIX and a nuimber of his other books, along with some industry chatter. BIX tells the life and times of Jazz great Bix Beiderbecke, from growing up in Iowa to playing with Louis Armstrong to his all-too-early passing. We discuss how Scott chose Bix as a subject for his book, separating fact from fiction and legend and some of the stylistic choices he made in designing the book. We also discuss a number of his past projects, including Northwest Passage, Two Generals, the Three Thieves series, his Red Ensign strip in the True Patriot Canadian anthology projects, which features folks like J. Torres (@jtorrescomics) and Faith Erin Hicks (@faitherinhicks) and more. The pod ends with a discussion of the comics business, comic shops and the book market. Scott talks the pros and cons of having books distributed in each one, while I tell some stories about working in both an indy friendly comic shop and as a clerk and manager at Borders (RIP). We mention how often one does not know the workings of the other (how many folks do not know Raina Telgemeier)) and how people like Jeff Smith paved the way for comics in the book trade. Thanks for listening. We hope you enjoy the show.
Scott has approached rarefied air that very few Canadian cartoonists have ever reached. His historical graphic memoir Two Generals was nominated for two Eisner Awards, named one of Chapters-Indigo’s best books of 2010, selected as a Best American Comics in 2012 and named by CBC as a “Canada Reads” selection and one of the 40 best Canadian non-fiction books of all-time. Not to be out done, his book Northwest Passage also has Harvey and Eisner nominations to its name. Plus, his young adult comic Three Thieves won a Joe Shuster award as The Best Canadian for Comic for Kids. He's a contributor to the Canadian superhero anthology, True Patriot, which was edited by past Speech Bubble guest J. Torres and he's currently doing covers for the Bettie Page comic published by Dynamite Entertainment. The project he's working on (as of this recording) is a graphic biography of a jazz cornet player Bix Beiderbecke aptly named, Bix.On the pod, Scott comes to the recording session, fresh off his stint as a panelist on Librarian and Educator Day at the Toronto Comic Art Festival, carrying All-Stars, a mini-comic he put together with University of Windsor librarians and history professors Heidi Jacobs and Miriam Wright about the Chatham [Ontario] Coloured All-Stars and their victory in 1934, as the first black team to win the Ontario Baseball Association title. Aaron and Scott cover the Chatham All-Stars and their star player Wilfred “Boomer” Harding, but not before bonding over their mutual love of the Batman 1966 TV show and chronicling Scott's path to professional comics making through animation. His early influences include the great Will Eisner, Canadian legend Ty Templeton and Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics – all of which put him on a path toward cartooning instead of drawing superheroes. He talks about what attracts him to simple storytelling and that mid-century design style that has become a bit of a calling card for him. Plus, he goes behind-the-scenes on the development of Two Generals – a highly personal project for him. The Lambda Calculus uses simple replacement to compute expressions. However, it does not define a way to replace a parameter of a function with the function itself. That would seem to make it impossible to write recursive functions. However, with a clever bit of self-application, we can define a function that makes any other function recursive. This is the Y-Combinator. Claude Shannon told us that it was important to keep equivocation high in order to make a cypher difficult to crack. In the second half of his paper, he tells us how to do that. We need to diffuse the message, and we need to confuse the key. Doing these two things will destroy the statistical patterns of the message so that the only possible attack is brute force. The Two Generals problem has no solution. But does that mean that we cannot guarantee that a distributed system will reach consensus? Not at all. By applying two simplifying assumptions, we reduce the problem to one that can be solved with a very simple protocol. This durable messaging protocol guarantees that a message is received once and only once.
In Episode 7 Our panel talks about Two Generals by Scott Chantler, a comics biography of the author’s grandfather’s experiences in the Second World War. Listen to find out what everyone’s grandparents did during the war (spoiler alert: ONE of the tradewaiters’ grandparents were too young to do much of anything), and to find out what it takes to get Angela’s husband to care about comics. Consider this our Rememberance Day episode. Music by Sleuth. The next episode will cover Tekkon Kinkreet: Black and White by Taiyo Matsumoto.
In episode 6, Jon, Jeff, Angela, and Kathleen talk about the first two trade paperbacks of Marvel Comics’ "Ms. Marvel," written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn by Adrian Alphona and Jake Wyatt. Be amazed as Kathleen goes through a magical transformation sequence! Feel sorrow when you hear about Jonathon’s messy break-up with the X-Men! If you’re a person who thinks you don’t like superheroes, this might be the book to try reading. Music by Sleuth Next episode will cover Two Generals by Scott Chantler.
Listener Richard Allen writes to ask about proving enough of a program correct to constrain the number of tests that must be written. I respond that you need both tests and proof. Otherwise, how could you know that the specification is what you intended? Two generals wish to reach consensus by sending messengers through enemy territory. How can this be achieved? You can prove, in fact, that it cannot. This has important rammifications on the design of distributed systems. To prove that prerequisites are satisfied before calling a method, you can use a factory method. By chaining these factory methods together, you can prove that an entire sequence of events must take place in the correct order. This makes a fluend API not only more readable, but also more provable.
