Seria a melhor obra do autor? Confira nesse podcast!

STATUS do you ever wonder why the publishing industry never discloses print runs and sales figures? Why is everything such a secret? I this episode we focus on the biggest market for comics in Europa with X-ray vision provided by French comics specialist and -market analyst Xavier Guilbert, who for years has been a thorn in the side of those in the French comics business who want to keep things under wraps or perpetuate myths. For instance, did you know that: - Every fourth book sold in France is a comic? - The best selling BOOK on the French market last year is a comic. From 2021? - That total earnings of the French comics industry doubler between 200 and 2021, entirely because of manga? - That neither manga nor the many woman creators who have entered the industry in recent years have changed the gender distribution of comics readers, which has been consistent since the eighties? - That Asterix is no longer the biggest franchise in French-language comics? We delve into these and many other surprising facts about the French market with one of its sharpest and most experienced analysts. Guilbert, who works with world building for Ubisoft, is the founder and chief editor of the comics website du9.org, which he has run for over twenty years, he is a columnist for the manga magazine Atom, and the curator of a series of retrospective exhibitions on Japanese comics masters Osamu Tezuka, Shigeru Mizuki, Yoshiharu Tsuge, Taiyō Matsumoto and Ryōchi Ikegami, all for the great comics festival in Angoulême, which by the way he also discusses here. € i 2022?

Resident comic book artist Bernard Caleo returns to the studio for the first time since lockdown with this month’s Drawn Out, discussing Zach Snyder’s ‘Justice League’ cut, Taiyo Matsumoto’s ‘Ping Pong’ as well as Safdar Ahmed’s ‘Still Alive’, which Bernard helped publish. Drawn from the stories of refugees detained in the Villawood Immigration Detention centre, ‘Still Alive’ is based on the Walkley-award winning webcomic ‘Villawood: Notes from an immigration detention centre’.Dancer and former lawyer Rhys Ryan chats about 'Bodylex', a dance work exploring how our bodies navigate the laws and regulations imposed on them. Blending legal theory and choreography, this new work for three dancers will premiere at Dancehouse.Multidisciplinary artist Candy Bowers talks about 'TAKE BACK!', a co-production between MAV and Darebin FUSE festival featuring a team of female and gender-diverse artists of colour both onstage and behind the scenes. Including both live performances and digital content, the performance explores and challenges the racialized gaze. Finally, MTC CEO Brett Sheehy announces the company’s Act 2 program playing during the second half of this year: ‘The Lifespan of a Fact’, a comic Broadway turn on the nature of truth, ‘The Truth’, a dark comedy on marital troubles, ‘Sunday’, the story of Heide Museum of Modern Art founder Sunday Reed, ‘Jacky’, Green Room Award Winner Declan Furber Gillick’s MTC debut, ‘Cyrano’, a gender-flipped adaptation of the Edmond Rostand classic, and ‘As You Like It’, which reunites the creative team behind MTC hit ‘Twelfth Night’.

Last week we sadly lost two influential mangaka whose works have become cultural institutions. Kazuhiko Kato, more popularly known by his pen name Monkey Punch, and Kazuo Koike have both passed away due to pneumonia. It’s bittersweet that Koike’s final tweets were reminiscing on his friend and rival, as both of their iconic series competed for popularity in Weekly Manga Action over nearly 50 years ago. His very last internet words were “I’m really going to miss him,” and we at Manga Mavericks feel the same about both creators. Lupin the Third is a franchise we both adore and one that has endured and entertained generations. Many of Koike’s works, including Lone Wolf and Cub, are absolute classics, and his legacy and influence on the medium can be seen through the numerous talents he helped nurture like Rumiko Takahashi and Tetsuo Hara, among many others. Both creators’ influence extend beyond manga, having even influence film directors abroad like Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino through film adaptations of their works. So while we mourn their passing, we also find solace that their life’s work and legacy will continue to live on. Though we’d like to spend more time eulogizing them, there’s been a lot of other news in the manga world we need to talk about. There’re new series, new licenses, and exciting opportunities for aspiring mangaka to break-in to the industry! Plus, we’ve got two new Jump Starts to talk about! Or, rather, “Manga Plus Starts” since they’re exclusive to that service. Did Heart Gear and Spy x Family soote our broken hearts, or are they series we’d rather exclude from the Manga Plus family? Late last year VIZ Media published the six and final volume of Sunny, a series that began in December 2010 in the original Japanese (published in Monthly Ikki), and has been coming out in English translation since the first volume in May 2013. This is a title that the guys have been wanting to discuss for some time, but they decided to hold out until the everything was wrapped up so that they could look at the series in its entirety. This is a realistic, evenly paced drama about a group of orphans and outsiders residing at Star Kids Home, a foster home that serves as a refuse for children without family or whose parents do not have the means, or even the interest, in caring for them. Although this narrative functions with an ensemble cast, Shea and Derek feel that the de facto protagonist here is Haruo, an angry, troubled kid whose parents remain aloof. The series unfolds as Haruo interacts with the other children at the home, each of whom gets ample attention in the text, and the adults who try to make things manageable for them. The one central refuge in their lives, a space of safety and imagination, is a derelict Nissan Sunny 1200 that sits abandoned in the front yard of the Star Kids Home. The guys spend most of the episode mapping out the various characters and their struggles in Sunny, but they also take the time to discuss other manga by Matsumoto, including Blue Spring (the original collected in 1993, and translated into English in 2004), Gogo Monster (2000/2009), the untranslated Takemitsuzamurai (2006-2010), and especially the Eisner Award-winning Tekkon Kinkreet, which originally ran from 1993-1994 and was collected as a one-volume English translation in 2007. As Shea points out, this is one of their favorite manga creators -- for both guys -- and they wanted to use this episode to dig deep into his art. Build your Taiyo Matsumoto library:
