To quote the Bard, it's been a long road, getting from there to here, but Paul and Al have made it to episode 200 of House to Astonish, and they're indulging in their traditional vices of cake and fizz, and talking about Vault Comics' Headshell line, Titan's new Conan series, Joe Kelly and Kim Niimura's Immortal Sergeant, and Ty Templeton's cancer-free all-clear. They're also reviewing a bunch of comics on a theme, as they look at Batman #200, House of Mystery #200, Amazing Spider-Man #200, and, er, Deadpool #58? And as always, the Official Handbook of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe is ringing in the new. (As this episode was recorded on Sunday evening, the news hadn't yet broken of the incredibly sad loss of Kevin O'Neill, an absolute giant of British comics, but there will be more to say about him on a future episode.)

It's that time again, we're almost at the halfway point of the season so it's time to flip open the Bongo Comics for another inspection of Maude's inky adventures. All business, the MFDBers are looking into FIVE Bongo Comics this time around! First up is “Send in the Clowns”- written by Mary Trainor- which gives us a brief look at Maude's response to ANOTHER armageddon! Next is “Slobberwacky” -written by Jesse Leon McCann- where Maude can be seen in sepia toned glory, taking part in ANOTHER parody? You betcha! Third is “Around Town With Ned Flanders”- again written by Jesse Leon McCann. With a title like that, Maude's got to be in more than one panel surely? You're wrong. And don't call me Maude. Buckle up by the way it's a long one. Fourth up is “The Simpsons Save The World”- written by Ty Templeton- and we take our furthest ever look into the future...and a statue of the Flanders family that may be telling history slightly falsely. And finally, the piece de la resistance. In “Verti-Go-Areeno”- written by Chuck Dixon- Ned references RuPaul and then meets a woman who looks a big diddly deal like our sweet Maude...but this Maude has a dark side...Tune in to this excessively long episode to find out more!

American Splendor scene #26 (1:18:34 to 1:24:48) — To his and Joyce’s great shock, Harvey is diagnosed with lymphoma. Joyce suggest he “make a comic book of the whole thing,” but Harvey just wants to die. Undeterred, Joyce enlists Fred, an artist, to illustrate the experience. Fred brings along Danielle, his daughter, on their first brainstorming session, and Joyce is smitten with the girl. Harvey agrees to participate in the comic — and asks Fred tp keep bringing Danielle along. Josh & Dean are again joined by Jeff “JahFurry” Newelt, who edited Harvey's online Pekar Project and the graphic novel Cleveland. "Fred" is an amalgam of artist Frank Stack and Danielle's real father. A discussion of Frank Stack and his art, going back to his work as one of the first underground cartoonists. Harvey wrote comics in the spirit of jazz — with the right partner — and how he chose his collaborators. "What kind of a Jew are you?" and Galicianers. JahFurry talks about working with the “late-period” Pekar. Harvey's importance as a jazz critic and “power-broker,” and Jah’s theory that the movie misses “25% of Harvey's persona.” Harvey's 70th birthday, Harvey Heads, and the Chocolate Cake and Clams Incident. Our giddiest and most flatulent episode ever! Scott has approached rarefied air that very few Canadian cartoonists have ever reached. His historical graphic memoir Two Generals was nominated for two Eisner Awards, named one of Chapters-Indigo’s best books of 2010, selected as a Best American Comics in 2012 and named by CBC as a “Canada Reads” selection and one of the 40 best Canadian non-fiction books of all-time. Not to be out done, his book Northwest Passage also has Harvey and Eisner nominations to its name. Plus, his young adult comic Three Thieves won a Joe Shuster award as The Best Canadian for Comic for Kids. He's a contributor to the Canadian superhero anthology, True Patriot, which was edited by past Speech Bubble guest J. Torres and he's currently doing covers for the Bettie Page comic published by Dynamite Entertainment. The project he's working on (as of this recording) is a graphic biography of a jazz cornet player Bix Beiderbecke aptly named, Bix.On the pod, Scott comes to the recording session, fresh off his stint as a panelist on Librarian and Educator Day at the Toronto Comic Art Festival, carrying All-Stars, a mini-comic he put together with University of Windsor librarians and history professors Heidi Jacobs and Miriam Wright about the Chatham [Ontario] Coloured All-Stars and their victory in 1934, as the first black team to win the Ontario Baseball Association title. Aaron and Scott cover the Chatham All-Stars and their star player Wilfred “Boomer” Harding, but not before bonding over their mutual love of the Batman 1966 TV show and chronicling Scott's path to professional comics making through animation. His early influences include the great Will Eisner, Canadian legend Ty Templeton and Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics – all of which put him on a path toward cartooning instead of drawing superheroes. He talks about what attracts him to simple storytelling and that mid-century design style that has become a bit of a calling card for him. Plus, he goes behind-the-scenes on the development of Two Generals – a highly personal project for him. FKAjason and Roy “Charlemagne” Cleary are back again with more classic Booster Gold and Captain Atom! First they discuss “Invasion from Dimension X” from Booster Gold (vol 1) #21 by Dan Jurgens, Ty Templeton, Gene D’Angelo, Steve Haynie, and Barbara Randall. It’s Booster versus some green goons with their green goo. That sounds waaaaaaay dirtier than it is.After that we check in with Major Force and discuss “Slugfest” from Captain Atom (vol 1) #15 by Cary Bates, Greg Weisman, Pat Broderick, Bob Smith, Nansi Hoolihan, Duncan Andrews, and Dennis O’Neil. Captain Atom crashes Major Force and Dr. Spectro's party and gets his ass handed to him.

Batman 66 #6"The Conqueror Bookworm" & "The Kissing Cossack"Published: December 18, 2013 The Bookworm is one of John's favorite villains in the Batman 66 universe and he's back in a story written by new to the series writer, Tom Peyer. Bookworm is researching Batman's every habit to determine who he really is and wants to sell the information to the highest bidder. Plus, Olga, Queen of the Cossacks, wants Batman to marry her since he put her Eggy in jail. John and Dan Greenfield of 13th Dimension get together in the Batcave to review DC Comics' sixth issue of the 66 series run. Join them every Wednesday for a new review as they go through every issue of the run and every special edition story as well. John and Dan talk about how writer Tom Peyer manages to write a story that easily could have been a Batman 66 episode, the ability of artist Ty Templeton to capture the likenesses of the main cast so well, and the odd interjection of a future plot point in the middle of a backup story. Dan Greenfield is the editor and co-creator of 13thDimension.com, a website devoted primarily to comics and pop culture, past and present. To him, the basic food groups are Batman, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek (the Original Series), James Bond, the Beatles and the Stones. But if he had to he'd be able to subsist on Batman alone. Channel 11 in New York was his favorite syndicated channel as a kid -- you can guess why -- followed closely by Channel 5. Channel 9 didn't really enter into it unless he was home sick and there wasn't much else on. He's married to his remarkably patient wife Wendy and his best sidekick is his son, Sam. They have two cats,Lex and Zod. Links 13th Dimension Website Facebook page Twitter

Jack and Geoff's expedition into the Forbidden Zone continues! In this episode they're covering four more Tales from this superlative collection: Kevin J. Anderson & Sam Knight's Of Monsters and Men, in which Dr. Zaius meets a dinosaur; Jim Beard's Silenced, a millennia-spanning story of a pair of dog tags and the women who encountered them; Milo's Tale by Ty Templeton, which explains exactly how a certain trio of enterprising chimps managed to escape from the planet of the apes; and Rich Handley's The King is Dead—Long Live the King, where ape ruler Caesar continues to pay the cost to be the boss. Amidst this minisode extravaganza, the boys also touch upon their appreciation of effective retconning, graphic dino-on-ape violence, and how they just can't quit Taylor. Check it out!

Happy Comicon Eve, Kansas City! We are a day early this week, so consider yourself the lucky winner! We've got a lot to do ahead of the start of the show tomorrow, so we are going to get things going with the podcast today! Before we can get into Planet Comicon, we've got to wrap things up with Cullen's recap of I Like Comic Con last weekend in Vancouver, WA. Raising money for the Hero Initiative, hanging out with the likes of Jim Steranko and Neal Adams, and seeing familiar friends - it doesn't get much better than that! Of course, the next party starts tomorrow at Bartle Hall in Kansas City. You can find the WCPE guys manning the Hero Initiative table at #1030. Next to us will be comic creator Ty Templeton at #1032. He will be signing books, sketching characters and telling stories all weekend long. Please stop by our tables to say, receive hugs, and help us raise some money for an awesome cause. Now, hopefully everyone has 1:00 Sunday afternoon blocked out on your calendars to attend the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! panel. Another live recording of a podcast. We'll play a game, answer questions, and give away some prizes. We want to fill the room, so help us out. We still have some time to fill this week, so we dive into the ComicsGate controversy. This is becoming a big issue, and we share our opinions of the situation. Plus, Jerry shares the thrill of winning an online auction for a treasured comic! We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint’s Comics. In this latest ball-bending episode, Two True Freaks co-host comes back to once again joins forces with Magnus, which can only mean there's another Big Book to talk about. This time it's the DC/Paradox Press Big Book of Losers written by Paul Kirchner with art by Frank Quitely, freaking Ty Templeton, Lee Moder, Val Semeiks, Rick Geary, Marshall Rogers, Dick Giordano, Joe Orlando, Charlie Adlard, Kieron Dwyer, Joe Staton, Ed Hannigan, Steve Leialoha and a metric crapload of others. These are the mind-turning tales of failure at life, industry, entertainment and even death that the perpetrators' magnitude of suck simply had to be documented for all time partly for entertainment value and partly as a cautionary tale to others.Still, a scant minority of ideas first presented in the Big Book of Losers have been vindicated by history, believe it or not, and the Big Book Reporters make sure to give those things their due.So start listening already! Failure to download and listen to this podcast is a mistake of such monumentally idiotic proportions that it's sure to be listed in the Big Book of Losers vol. 2 (due out sooner or later)! So don't be a moron; enjoy listening to Chris Honeywell and Magnus talk about the failures and shortcomings of others!Do you have a suggestion for a topic? Feel free to e-mail me at trentusmagnus@gmail.com and I might consider thinking about the possibility of potentially discussing whatever you have in mind some day. And that's a promise!Feedback for this and any other episode may be sent to trentusmagnus@gmail.com.
