Citizens' Climate Lobby
The College Carbon Fee and Dividend Climate Change Movement

Citizens' Climate Lobby

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 29, 2023 31:33

In episode 88 of Citizens Climate Radio, we dive into the passion and action of young climate activists, exploring their journeys from concern to meaningful action. Host, Peterson Toscano leads the conversation, spotlighting the endeavors of students like Emily O'Keefe and Helen Tiffin in fostering awareness about climate change and feasible solutions, focusing particularly on the carbon fee and dividend policy. See full show notes and transcript at CCLUSA.org/radio From Concern to Action Emily O'Keefe, a student at the College of William and Mary, candidly shared her progression from a state of existential concern about climate change to actively seeking out impactful solutions. Emily's journey started with a realization about the importance of sustainable living and protecting the environment. This ultimately led her to a gap year where she could detach and reconnect with nature by hiking the Appalachian Trail. "I want to do something really big about climate change. And I'm just trying to figure out how can I do that?" - Emily O'Keefe Evolving Ideas & Shared Enthusiasm Emily's initial idea to start a social movement was supported and molded by her friends, like Helen Tiffin. They delved deep into discussions about the nature of the movement and the message it should convey. Eventually, she was introduced to the carbon fee and dividend policy by a friend, Philip Ignatov. This policy became the focal point of their movement due to its effectiveness and tangible impact. Helen Tiffin supported Emily's enthusiasm, remarking on the nonpartisan nature and wide appeal of the carbon fee and dividend idea, noting, “It really is something that we can all agree upon.” Carbon Fee & Dividend – An Equitable Solution The carbon fee and dividend policy essentially imposes a fee on corporations extracting fossil fuels, making fossil fuel-intensive products more expensive and thereby encouraging consumers to opt for more sustainable alternatives. Importantly, the policy also includes an equitable dividend system where the revenue from the fees is distributed equally among Americans. "So that actually makes it so that the majority of Americans, around two-thirds, will actually break even or profit from the money coming back to them in this cashback form, than they have to pay in increased prices." - Emily O'Keefe Building a Movement Emily, Helen, and their friends engaged in creating signs which read Most Effective Climate Policy #carbonfeeanddividend bit.ly/writecongresshere They raised awareness on their campus, and beyond and fostered a ‘snowball effect', enabling more and more students and people to recognize and understand the carbon fee and dividend policy, spreading across multiple universities and leveraging online platforms like Instagram for greater reach. Their campaign also linked to direct actions, creating templates for people to write to Congress and advocate for the policy. “It is all about spreading that awareness and education and whatever form it presents itself,” Helen stated. Sustaining Impact & Longevity The Carbon Fee and Dividend Movement initiated by Emily and her friends has found a stable home base within the Citizens Climate Lobby's Higher Education Team, ensuring the sustainability and longevity of their efforts. "We are going to be partnered with Friday's For Future in advocating for this...This will bring a lot of power to the movement." - Emily O'Keefe Emphasizing the nonpartisan and optimistic values of the Citizens Climate Lobby, Emily believes in the importance of embodying these values for the successful advancement of the movement. They continue to use platforms like Slack to coordinate efforts across various chapters and provide resources to aid climate work. Follow the Climate Fee and Dividend Movement on Instagram and visit their website.  Takeaways This episode sheds light on the relentless spirit of young activists, their journey of transforming concern into impactful action, and the communal spirit that propels the movement forward. Their dedication to spreading awareness about the carbon fee and dividend as an effective and equitable solution is not just inspiring but is paving the way for a more informed and resilient climate movement. Citizens Climate Radio is welcoming three new team members, Lily Russian, Horace, and Karina Taylee, who will be regular voices on the platform. Lily is a political science major and environmental science minor at Trinity College, whose passion for the environment was ignited by her experience at the Island School, a program focused on sustainability and marine biology. She enjoys playing the ukulele and emphasizes intentional living for a sustainable future. Horace, a recent graduate from the University of Michigan and an environmental specialist, has had a lifelong connection to nature, instilled by his family's trips immersed in the natural beauty of his hometown in Chongqing, China. He is dedicated to promoting sustainability and addressing climate change to preserve the environment for future generations. You will meet the third new member, Karina Taylee, next month. Good News  Shelterwood Collective, a non-profit focusing on communal healing and ecosystem restoration on 900 acres in Northern California, is the focus of this month's Good News Story. CCR team member Lila Powell researched, wrote, and recorded the story about the indigenous, black, and queer-led group that uses Kashia and southern Pomo traditions in forest restoration, involving controlled burns and invasive species removal. In 2022, they received a $4.5 million grant to enhance their restoration efforts. The collective also uses art, focusing on interconnected ecosystems, to inspire community involvement and is developing a center to foster environmental relationships and inclusivity.  If you're looking for more good news and you want to connect with other climate advocates who refuse to give up, then check out Grassroots Rising Leveling up in the Climate Fight. What does John's Gospel have to say about the Christian life? Famously, John tells us why he wrote at the end of his Gospel: so that we might “believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). We can easily read John's Gospel and think that it's only about understanding who Jesus is and believing in him. Those are important, but the problem is we might not think that John's Gospel is a rich resource for living the Christian life and thinking about Christian ethics. In this episode of the CCL podcast, Tom Habib, lecturer in New Testament at Moore College, helps us to think about what it means to live the Christian life from the perspective of John's Gospel. We read the Old Testament, we draw comfort from the Psalms, and we can read the Ten Commandments. But in this episode of the CCL podcast with Professor Desmond Alexander, we're going to focus on the first five books of the Old Testament and think about how they help us to understand the person and work of the Lord Jesus, and how they help us to respond appropriately to him. When Marshall Saunders first envisioned the creation of CCL, Cap-and-Trade was the primary way lawmakers heard about carbon pricing. But through relentless messaging and volunteer lobbying, the discussion has shifted to carbon fee and dividend. The ultimate goal? Incentivize both businesses and individuals to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Citizens' Climate Lobby advocates for a carbon fee and dividend, an economy-wide fee that is then returned to citizens. At the point of extraction, a fee will be placed on fossil fuels. This collected store of cash will then be distributed back to individuals and in turn, flow through the economy, incentivizing both businesses and people to slowly but surely rely on renewables. His extensive expertise is reflected in the 19 books he has authored on the subject, showcasing his unwavering commitment to unlocking the power of trust. He also has a podcast called The Trust Show. Step into the world of trust and inspiration today as we bring you an exclusive conversation with the remarkable Yoram Solomon! In this episode, we delve into the captivating world of trust and the behind-the-scenes magic of TED conferences, and we uncover the invaluable insights of the guru of trust! Bio: Dr. Yoram Solomon is the author of The Book of TRUST and host of The TRUST Show podcast. He published a total of 19 books, holds 9 patents, and was one of the creators of Wi-Fi and USB 3.0 technologies, for which he was dubbed "TI's Great Innovator." Dr. Solomon was named one of the top 10 global thought leaders in Culture and HR by Thinkers360 and one of the Top 40 Innovation Bloggers by Innovation Excellence. He was a columnist at Inc. Magazine, Innovation Excellence, and other publications, where he published 300+ articles. Dr. Solomon holds a Ph.D. in Organization and Management from Capella University, an MBA from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, an LLB from the Tel-Aviv University Law School, and an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering from Ort Singalovski. He completed the Executive Marketing Management Program at Stanford University and the Developing the Strategic Leader program at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) in Colorado Springs. Dr. Solomon is certified by CCL to administer the KEYS and SKILLSCOPE assessments and is an authorized provider of school board training by the Texas Education Agency. He has founded several startups and sold a startup company in Silicon Valley. He has held various positions from General Manager of a $100m business unit in a Fortune 200 company to Vice-President of Corporate Strategy and Innovation and CEO. Dr. Solomon held (and still holds) positions as an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship and innovation at Southern Methodist University, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Hadassah Academic College in Jerusalem.  A National Speakers Association Professional Speaker, he spoke at several different national and regional conferences, including the Human Resources Southwest Annual Conference, the Association for Strategic Planning National Conference, CDX Annual Conference, and many more. Yoram was the host of the first TEDx Plano (2014) and spoke at TEDx Oaklawn (2018) and TEDx Plano Senior HS (2022). His customers include a wide range of Fortune 500 companies as well as startups, for-profit, non-profit, and government organizations, in a broad spectrum of industries from technology to retail, healthcare, defense, and education. He served companies such as AT&T, Dannon, Amway, Texas Instruments, and many more, who described his keynotes and workshops as transformative.  In 2015, he was elected to the Plano Independent School District Board of Trustees. Yoram served in the IDF 35th Airborne Paratrooper Brigade and as a USAF CAP pilot and Aerospace Education Officer. How Yoram's passion for trust came about Thirty years ago, Yoram started his journey as an engineer, immersing himself in software and hardware development. His unwavering passion for innovation always burned brightly within him, and he found it challenging to select a topic for his doctoral dissertation that would not only enrich his own life but also enhance the lives of others. So he embarked on an endeavor that diverged from the prevailing notion that a good dissertation is a completed one, and a question emerged: Why do individuals display greater creativity in small startup companies compared to larger, more established ones? That inquiry deeply resonated with his personal experiences, and it started his two-year research journey, which ultimately revealed that the answer lay within the realm of innovation culture, encompassing the vital elements of autonomy, accountability, and constructive disagreement. However, an unexpected revelation awaited him—a paradigm shift from innovation to a foundational aspect of human interaction: trust. Yoram discovered that the absence of trust within organizations manifested in various forms, impeding the elements that fostered a culture of innovation. This realization propelled Yoram onto a new path of exploration, where he found himself standing at a crossroads, torn between the domains of innovation and trust. Seeking counsel, he turned to his closest friends and family. Despite their overwhelming support for innovation, he resolutely chose to delve into the profound depths of trust. That marked the beginning of his transformation into the trust man, and he embarked on a remarkable journey to unravel the intricate dynamics of trust and its profound impact on entrepreneurship and human collaboration. Becoming a professional speaker Being a professional speaker has become the main focus of Yoram's life. He only discovered his passion at 50, after working as an executive in the technology sector and running a $100 million business unit at Texas Instruments. Approaching his 50th birthday, he realized he did not want to spend his days idly. Recognizing his love for researching, writing, and speaking, he decided to explore the possibility of turning those interests into a profession. In 2015, he took a leap of faith and left his position as an Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy to start his own business.  How to instill trust within a team Yoram believes trust is relative, non-universal, and varies depending on individual personalities and behaviors. He believes that analyzing the trusting relationships within a team is essential for building trust, and the level of a team's vulnerability gets determined by the least trusted person. Trust can develop over time through better understanding, training, or adjusting personality conflicts. Yoram explains that holding onto someone the team does not trust could compromise the performance of the whole team.  Political correctness High levels of political correctness can lead to a lack of trust because people may not say what they truly mean. Conversely, individuals may hesitate to express their true thoughts and feelings when trust is lacking.  Constructive disagreements Constructive disagreement is significantly higher when there is trust among individuals. Yoram conducted a survey where he asked participants about their perspectives on agreements. He provided options ranging from disagreements being unproductive to passionately disagreeing with someone while remaining friends. The results showed that the positive responses outweighed the negative ones by 71% in contexts where trust was present.  Yoram's eighth book Yoram's eighth book is titled Cause of Death: Political Correctness. He co-authored it with Laurie Van, a counselor specializing in non-suicidal self-injury and suicide among teenagers. The book explores how political correctness negatively affects the creativity and productivity of children and is divided into three parts: the impact of political correctness, its manifestations, and consequences; the reasons behind its existence; and a connection between events and the culture of litigation in America.  Yoram's first TED Talk Yoram's first TED Talk was titled The Day That Forever Changed America's Culture. In it, he discussed the culture of litigation in the US and its impact on human resources and productivity.  A major problem in current politics Yoram believes that a problem in current politics is how money influences elections. He argues that money buys votes and suggests that one solution would be eliminating money-funded advertisements. Removing such advertisements would reduce the ability of wealthy individuals or corporations to influence politicians by paying for advertising. He feels the current system favors candidates who can afford extensive advertising, leaving many other candidates unheard of. Money spent on political advertisements Yoram proposes the elimination of money spent on political advertisements and political action committees (PACs). He believes that politicians should focus on working hard and engaging with people directly rather than relying on television or other forms of media.  Gun violence Yoram believes that when it comes to gun violence, the real issue lies in the lack of responsibility and the divisive political culture that dehumanizes others. He emphasizes the importance of promoting understanding and unity rather than focusing on labels such as liberal or conservative. Yoram explains how to do a Ted Talk It is essential to select a topic that aligns with your expertise and is relevant and evergreen. Be proactive in finding TED events and organizers, and be one of the first to apply. Do your best to establish personal relationships with organizers to build trust. Once accepted, you must consider the time limit and script your content accordingly because you may find it difficult to condense your ideas into a short timeframe. During the TED Talk, consider both the live audience and the camera. It is essential to engage the live audience and elicit a reaction from them while also keeping the potential audience behind the camera in mind. That will ensure you communicate effectively both in person and through the camera. Motherhood is not something that we all know directly in our lives, but we all, at least, experience it indirectly: we've all been born of a woman. This is something common to humanity and is one of our deepest bonds with Jesus, our brother, who was born of the Virgin Mary. Motherhood can be viewed poorly. It can be seen as something to be endured, an interruption to life and a career, or something terribly painful and questionable in its goodness. But when we think about motherhood theologically, we see it differently. It's something that God has designed with great purpose and goodness. It's a beautiful thing that marks one of the distinctive roles of women in society. It's something to celebrate, even in its pain and risk. Furthermore, in the expectation of life that pregnancy holds, there is a great picture of our expectation of eternal life. In this episode of the CCL podcast with Jodie McIver, we consider God's purposes in pregnancy and birth. Episode 255 may be the toughest one yet here on Defenders of the Banc. No match was more important in our club's history than this second leg of the 2023 CCL Final against Leon. We had them at home, at BMO, at a place we've staunchly defended for 6 years. We needed just one goal to level things and take control of the series. And we had Denis Bouanga, Carlos Vela, a healthy Kellyn Acosta, an un-suspended Jesus Murillo, and... wait... is that Giorgio Chiellini?! It is!However, despite the talent, the desire, and maybe the best support The 3252 have ever provided, we didn't have the goals. LAFC failed to find the back of the net in leg 2, falling 1-0 and 3-1 on aggregate. Club Leon is the 2023 CCL Champions. On this episode, we try to help you navigate through the hurt and the grief. We ask questions of Steve and Cifu, throw praise at McCarthy and Denis, and wonder what could have been. Walk with us on the journey that is Episode 255, and know that the next one is just around the corner!

It was a beautiful sequence, as Denil Maldonado, Carlos Vela, Sergi Palencia, the heel of Mati Bogusz, and then the golden boot of Denis Bouanga finally broke through in Mexico!Let's not mince words. If not for the heroic effort of John McCarthy, LAFC could have very easily given up four or five goals tonight. But we didn't! LAFC Director of Football Operations Marco Garcés is this week's guest. He knows a thing or two about Liga MX and playing León in finals. Max and Vince get a detailed breakdown from Marco about what it's like playing a final at León and what to expect from LAFC's Liga MX opponent. The guys also ask Marco how important the CCL trophy is to Mexico and what it would mean for an MLS team to win it for the second year in a row. Before that, Max and Vince do their own preview with their keys to the final, players to watch, and one reason why either team will lift the trophy. Make sure you listen to this episode before both legs of the final.
