How do you know when a dog will truly benefit from a brace? Can a CCL brace for dogs replace surgery? What role does a dog hock brace play after an Achilles tendon injury? In Part 2 of our conversation with canine physical therapist Caroline (Carrie) Adrian, BS, MSPT, PhD, tCPT, we turn our attention to hind limb injuries and conditions and the growing role of canine orthotics in veterinary rehabilitation for the pelvic limb.We begin with a brief review of orthoses for the front limb, trunk stabilization and pelvic/hip support devices before diving into some of the most common indications for hind limb orthoses. Carrie shares how custom orthotic devices can protect healing tissues, improve function, reduce pain, and support mobility in dogs recovering from injury, managing chronic conditions, or requiring long-term assistance.Just as importantly, we discuss why quality matters. Not all braces are created equal, and poorly designed, poorly fitted, or copycat products may fail to provide appropriate support—or even interfere with healing. Orthoses should always be selected based on a sound diagnosis, patient-specific goals, and careful follow-up.In This Episode:Review of trunk support and hip stabilization optionsWhen is a brace the right choice—and when is it not? What can orthoses realistically accomplish?Conservative management with orthoses versus surgeryThe importance of custom design, fit, and follow-up carePotential complications from poorly fitted devicesWhy rehabilitation exercises remain essential alongside bracingThe risks of knockoffs, copycat devices, and inadequate supportSkin management and monitoring during orthosis usePelvic Limb Topics CoveredTrunk, Pelvis & Hip (or coxofemoral joint)Review of trunk stabilization devicesSupport for hip dysplasia, weakness, and neurologic conditionsThe role of pelvic support in dogs with mobility deficitsHow garments facilitate posture and why posture matters for functionStifle (Knee)Cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCL/ACL injuries)Three basic choices of careFunctional bracing following injury or surgeryWhy bracing won't help medial patellar luxation (MPL) Meniscal considerationsMatching the orthosis to the individual patientSetting realistic expectations for outcomesTarsus (Hock or ankle)Achilles tendon injuriesGraduated Flexion Orthoses (GFO) the balance between allowing appropriate tissue stress to augment healing while protecting healing tissue from reinjuryOrthosis ManagementSkin care and pressure point monitoringImportance of proper fit and ongoing adjustmentsGradual acclimation to brace use - the scheduleRegular reassessment as healing progressesKey TakeawaysBraces are medical devices—not one-size-fits-all solutions.Proper diagnosis and custom fitting are critical for successful outcomes.High-quality canine orthotics can improve mobility, comfort, and healing.Poorly designed or improperly fitted braces may delay recovery or cause additional problems.Rehabilitation remains an essential part of every bracing program.Find Dr. Adrian at CanineIQ.net.Her email is Info@CanineIQ.netCompanies and products mentioned during this episode:DogLeggsHero BracesThera-PawWiggleLess®HipLignWhether you're a veterinary rehabilitation professional, veterinarian, technician, student, or devoted pet owner, this episode offers practical guidance on how orthotic devices can help improve mobility, function, and quality of life for canine patients. Thanks for listening to PetAbility Podcast! Send us Fan MailRoutine stifle exploration during canine cranial cruciate ligament surgery sounds like common sense, until you ask the uncomfortable question: what if “doing more” doesn't reliably improve long-term function for most dogs? We sit down with Dr. Dan Low to unpack long-term outcomes after high tibial osteotomy procedures (TPLO and CCWO) performed without routine arthroscopy or arthrotomy and without proactive meniscal evaluation, a real-world approach many clinicians use but rarely see studied in depth. We break down what high tibial osteotomy actually changes in the cruciate-deficient stifle, then get practical about evidence. Dan explains why this large case series matters, how uncommon events become easier to estimate with bigger numbers, and why validated owner-reported tools like LOAD (Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs) and the Canine Orthopedic Index give us a more standardized view of recovery than vague “good” or “excellent” labels. We also discuss one of the most debated points in veterinary orthopedics: late meniscectomy. When a meniscal sparing strategy produces a low late-intervention rate that looks similar to rates reported in explored joints, it raises a bigger issue about which meniscal lesions are truly clinically meaningful. We don't pretend one study settles the debate. You'll hear the strongest criticisms of this design, the patient groups where exploration still makes sense (uncertain diagnosis, revision cases), and the unanswered research questions that could reshape how we balance morbidity, time, and cost in dog knee surgery. If you treat CCL disease, refer cruciate cases, or counsel owners through surgical options, this conversation will sharpen how you explain risk-benefit decisions without defaulting to habit.Subscribe for more evidence-focused veterinary conversations, share this episode with a colleague, and leave a rating or review wherever you listen.JAVMA article: https://doi.org/10.2460/javma.25.11.0736INTERESTED IN SUBMITTING YOUR MANUSCRIPT TO JAVMA ®  OR AJVR ® ?JAVMA ® : https://avma.org/JAVMAAuthorsAJVR ® : https://avma.org/AJVRAuthorsFOLLOW US:JAVMA ® :Facebook: Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association - JAVMA | FacebookInstagram: JAVMA (@avma_javma) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: JAVMA (@AVMAJAVMA) / Twitter AJVR ® : Facebook: American Journal of Veterinary Research - AJVR | FacebookInstagram: AJVR (@ajvroa) • Instagram photos and videosTwitter: AJVR (@AJVROA) / TwitterJAVMA ®  and AJVR ®  LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/company/avma-journals

Battelle's Chlorinated Conference draws 1,500 environmental professionals from 23 countries, and its division manager explains why PFAS treatment is pushing the industry to its limits.Joe Tarsavage, Division Manager of Environmental Solutions at Battelle, discusses the 30-year history of the Chlorinated Conference, how PFAS contamination has reset treatment standards from two nines to five or six nines of removal, and why that gap is driving rapid innovation across the remediation sector. He also addresses how artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape site investigation, data analysis, and client reporting, and why the industry is only scratching the surface of what that technology can do.Tarsavage details Battelle's expanding conference portfolio, including the upcoming Sediments Conference in Austin in January 2027 and the newly rebranded Battelle Bloom Conference in June 2027, which will broaden the traditional bioremediation platform to include critical minerals and land optimization. He also touches on emerging contaminants now appearing on EPA's CCL 6 list, including microplastics and 6PPD-quinone, and what it will take for laboratories and researchers to develop reliable analytical methods for those compounds. The conversation also covers Battelle's student mentoring program, the value of deliberate mentorship in a field where it no longer happens organically, and what Tarsavage is asking conference participants to help shape for future events.#Battelle #PFAS #EnvironmentalConsulting #remediation #technologyCHAPTERS:0:00 Introduction and Joe Tarsavage's Role at Battelle0:58 History and Growth of the Chlorinated Conference2:55 PFAS as the Dominant Industry Topic5:00 Building the Conference Platform and Steering Committee6:05 AI and Digital Technology in Environmental Work8:50 How Reporting Timelines Have Changed Over 30 Years9:45 Poster Sessions, Student Competition, and Mentoring12:45 What Has Changed Most Over the Conference's 30 Years14:45 Vapor Intrusion, PFAS, and Evolving Regulations16:30 PFAS Treatment Challenges and Innovation17:50 Where Battelle and the Conference Are Headed Next19:35 Emerging Contaminants: Microplastics and 6PPD-Quinone21:15 Battelle's Role in Methods Development22:00 Conference Venue Plans and Future Locations23:45 The Value of Networking at Industry Conferences25:30 Closing RemarksReply

Over the past eight months, CCL conducted in‑depth interviews with business and HR leaders across regions to identify the five leadership trends defining what comes next. We explore one of the most important questions facing organisations today: Has globalisation reached an inflection point — and what does that mean for leadership? We discuss how leaders are navigating a world shaped by poly crisis — where economic shifts, digital acceleration, geopolitical uncertainty, and social fragmentation collide. Elisa and Mike share insights on the new leadership capabilities required: judgment under ambiguity, alignment across borders, resilience in disruption, and the ability to lead through complexity rather than control it.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Microplastics appear on a federal contaminant watchlist for the first time, and the regulatory path forward remains far from certain. Megan Quinn, senior reporter at Waste Dive, breaks down what the EPA's proposed new Contaminant Candidate List 6 actually means for water utilities, landfill operators, and chemical manufacturers, and why the lack of standardized test methods could slow any future regulation significantly.Quinn explains how the CCL process works, who sits on the newly reshuffled Science Advisory Board, and why the parallel push from the MAHA movement adds political complexity to what is otherwise a science-driven process. The conversation draws on direct parallels to how PFAS moved through the regulatory pipeline over more than a decade, from early CCL listings to drinking water standards to hazardous substance designations, offering a framework for understanding how microplastics and newly listed pharmaceuticals might follow a similar, lengthy trajectory. The episode also covers the dissolution of the EPA's Office of Research and Development, New Mexico's move to regulate PFAS as a hazardous waste, the Department of War's updated PFAS destruction and disposal guidance, and what the rollback of certain PFAS drinking water standards signals about the current administration's regulatory priorities. Expensive electricity and an insufficient power supply could endanger electrification efforts. Fortunately, in an age of high costs of living, policymakers are very interested in finding solutions. Join CCL's Research Manager Dana Nuccitelli, supported by CCL's Electrification Action Team to learn what's behind rising electricity rates and energy insecurity, and how we can solve these problems.
