Prime Minister Mark Carney spells out his criteria for what qualifies as a project of 'national interest.' While there are no specific examples coming out of the first ministers' meeting, Carney says it will be a 'living list.' What's the number one threat to America today? According to national security expert Juliette Kayyem, it's not what you might expect. "Violence, or the threat of violence, as the accepted extension of our policy differences," she explains, pointing to a troubling shift in our political landscape where violence has become normalized and even state-authorized.As former Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security under President Obama, Harvard lecturer, and CNN's go-to disaster expert, Kayyem brings unparalleled insight to today's most pressing security challenges. She delivers a masterclass in understanding the complex interplay between democracy, security, and power in our rapidly changing world. Our conversation explores how billionaires like Elon Musk have accumulated unprecedented control over global communication systems, creating new kinds of national security vulnerabilities. "He controls information in a way that we've never seen before," Kayyem warns, highlighting how commercial interests now intersect with critical security functions traditionally managed by governments.Perhaps most compelling is Kayyem's candid assessment of where Democrats have failed, particularly on immigration policy. "Democrats tend to convince themselves that border security is a mythology of Fox News," she says, explaining how this blindspot has consistently undermined progressive messaging with voters. Her refreshing honesty cuts through partisan talking points to offer a clear-eyed view of what effective homeland security truly requires: managing the secure flow of people, goods, and ideas rather than simply building walls.Whether discussing the strategic failures of political messaging, the reality of cartels, or the path forward for rebuilding democratic norms, Kayyem's analysis is both sobering and surprisingly hopeful. (AURN News) - The White House is maintaining its efforts to pass federal legislation guaranteeing paid family and medical leave for American workers. Tom Perez, Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, and Jennifer Klein, Director of the Gender Policy Council, convened a meeting with leaders from several states to discuss strategies for enacting a national paid leave program. The discussion focused on the successes already achieved at the state level and explored ways to build momentum for a federal policy. In a statement, the White House says it remains committed to helping families "take the time they need to bond with a new child; care for a seriously ill loved one; heal from their own serious illness; address circumstances arising from a loved one's military deployment; find safety from domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking; or grieve the death of a loved one." To reinforce this commitment, President Biden has incorporated funding for a national paid family and medical leave program in his proposed fiscal year 2025 budget. States participating in the White House meeting included New Jersey, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, and New Mexico. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Congressman Randy Weber is a public servant, proven conservative, former small business owner, and third-generation Texan representing the 14th District of Texas. In Congress, he serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has the broadest jurisdiction of any legislative committee in Congress. Weber also serves on the Science Space and Technology. For over 70 years, Randy Weber has called the Gulf Coast home - a place to start a family and build a business. Although juggling work and family takes great amounts of time and effort, Weber makes time to be an active member of his church and community. Weber built his air conditioning company, Weber's Air & Heat, in 1981 from scratch and grew his business by using what his grandfather used to call ‘good old-fashion Texas horse sense and a strong work ethic.' Like others who have successfully moved from business to public service, Weber's real-world experience in the private sector underpins his commitment to lower taxes, his contempt for wasteful spending, and his firm dedication to better schools. Prior to being elected to Congress, Weber served four years in the Texas State House. During his tenure, Weber served on the committees of Environmental Regulation, Public Education, and as Vice Chair of Border and Intergovernmental Affairs. While serving in the Texas House, Randy Weber authored landmark legislation to combat human trafficking and protect women, young girls, and boys - some as young as 12 years old. Weber has lived in a 20-mile radius all his life and has been married to Brenda Weber, a retired schoolteacher, for over 47 years. He is a graduate of Alvin Community College, and holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Houston at Clear Lake. Randy and Brenda have three children and eight wonderful grandchildren. He previously served on the House Foreign Affairs and Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. In today's episode, I speak with RI representative and 1st Congressional Districtman Gabe Amo. The conversation marks a reflective time as it is his first 100 days. According to the Brookings Institute … [Franklin D] Roosevelt's rhetoric and mastery of the new medium of radio were not what made him the president who is remembered for the first 100 days. It was the breathtaking scope of bold and new actions, both legislative and regulatory, that set the bar so high. Ever since, presidents have been evaluated for their performance in the first 100 days Gabriel Felix Kofi Amo is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Rhode Island's 1st congressional district. He grew up in Pawtucket RI, is a graduate of Wheaton College where he became both a Marshall Scholar, and a Truman scholar. Before running for Congress, Amo worked in the Biden administration as the deputy director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. He has also worked in the Obama administration, on several Democratic political campaigns, and in Rhode Island governor Gina Raimondo's administration.
