Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 22, 2025 is: voluble VAHL-yuh-bul adjective Someone may be described as voluble if they are talking a lot in a rapid, energetic way. // Bri knew something was bothering her normally voluble friend when he was reluctant to talk about his day. See the entry > Examples: “The movie is built around an interview with the legendary 91-year-old actor, still vigorous and voluble, with a seize-the-day cornball glow to him. In ‘You Can Call Me Bill,' Shatner sits under the hot lights, with the camera close to his face, talking, talking, and talking—about life, death, acting, fame, love, desolation, and trees.” — Owen Gleiberman, Variety, 16 Mar. 2023 Did you know? In a chapter titled “Conversation,” from her 1922 book Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home, Emily Post offers her trademark good advice for the loquacious among us: “There is a simple rule, by which if one is a voluble chatterer ... one can at least refrain from being a pest or a bore. And the rule is merely, to stop and think.” Voluble, as is clear in this context, describes someone or something (as in “voluble personality/prose/presence”) characterized by ready or rapid speech. Voluble traces back to the Latin verb volvere, meaning “to set in a circular course” or “to cause to roll.” Another volvere descendant, volume, can also be a help in remembering voluble's meaning, not because someone described as voluble speaks at a loud volume, per se, but because they have volumes to say.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 7, 2022 is: voluble VAHL-yuh-bul adjective Voluble means "characterized by ready or rapid speech." // During the public forum, the town's more voluble residents expressed their displeasure with the council's decision to increase property taxes. See the entry > Examples: "[Erich Jarvis] hypothesized that the most vocal animals are typically the ones that have to worry less about predators. Interestingly, he noticed that especially voluble vocal learners 'tend to be near the top of the food chain—like humans, whales, and dolphins or elephants.'" — Emma Bryce, Live Science, 2 July 2021 Did you know? Voluble traces back to Latin volvere, meaning "to set in a circular course" or "to cause to roll." English rolled with that meaning, using voluble as an adjective to describe things easily rolling, changing, or turning, and later added the meaning of Latin volūbilis, which implies readily flowing speech. Today, voluble most often describes an individual who speaks easily and often.

Voluble is an adjective that means speaking rapidly or readily. Volvere (vole VAR ay) is the Latin word for ‘roll’ or ‘revolve.’ The meaning of this root word evolved over time into a number of English words like ‘revolver’ and ‘revolution.’ It has also evolved and revolved into our word of the day, which is generally used to describe someone whose speech rolls along fluidly and quickly. For example: That salesman’s patter was so voluble he persuaded me into buying a number of things I didn’t really need. But that’s what happens when dealing with a fast and smooth talker.

Agua. Voluble. Suave.

The Latin root word volv and its variants volut and volt mean “roll” or “turn round.” These roots are the word origins of a fair number of English vocabulary words, including revolve, involve, evolution, and revolt. The roots volv and volut are easily recalled through the words involve, or “roll” in, and revolution, or a “rolling” back against a current government or other system in power.Like this? Volubles son las personas que cambian de opinión a cada rato porque nos están convencidas o porque no tienen ideas o criterios propios, se mueven según sopla el viento y son emocionalmente inestables. Pero una cosa es ser voluble y otras es ser bipolar, donde está la raya que los divide y qué hacer en cada caso.
