Most discourses about Israel or Palestine are morality plays of good guys vs bad guys. Egyptian-born Hussein Aboubakr Mansour takes a different approach, seeing the conflict as a self-reproducing system of political and economic extraction where Arab regimes, opposition movements, rival states, Western academics, NGOs, and Gulf monarchies like Qatar all convert Palestinian victimhood into their own forms of power, money, and meaning. Listen as Mansour speaks with EconTalk's Russ Roberts about his childhood in an Egypt organized around the liberation of Palestine and explores why any exit from the system must run not through policy, but rather through the human need for meaning itself.

When students begin to study international politics, they meet some very old and well-established schools of thought. These approaches disagree about a fundamental question: what is the most important kind of information to acquire? One school of thought recommends studying power: who holds the weapons, and who fears whom. From that, the thinking goes, you'll be able to map the hierarchies and relationships that tell you everything essential that you need to know. Another recommends studying the cultures and dominant ideas that constitute the spirit of a given regime—to try to understand the way a nation will behave based on what it loves, what it honors, and how it understands itself.  Of course, ideally you would want to understand both. This week, I'm bringing together two of the most sophisticated, interesting analysts of the Middle East to discuss how they approach the region. When Michael Doran looks at the Middle East, he focuses relative power. Doing so gives him the ability to separate the signal from the noise. The vitality of theological disputes and national cultures is constrained by the ability of the state to deploy force, whether in Iran, Egypt, Turkey, or Saudi Arabia. When Hussein Aboubakr Mansour looks at the Middle East, by contrast, he sees a set of ideologies whose provenance he traces back to European philosophy. How do these two angles of vision relate to one another, and what does each offer? And what do they reflect back to us about America and the West?  Michael Doran is a senior fellow and director of the Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East at the Hudson Institute, and host, together with Gadi Taub, of the podcast Israel Update, which is cosponsored by Hudson and Tablet. Hussein Aboubakr Mansour is a fellow at JINSA's Gemunder Center, a columnist at Mosaic, and the author of the Abrahamic Metacritique on Substack. This conversation was recorded live in front of an audience of elite undergraduates, participating in this year's Beren Summer Fellowship, where this week, Michael Doran and Hussein Aboubakr Mansour have been resident faculty members. Prediction markets have quickly become a major force shaping conversations around elections, sports, the economy, and breaking news. But as platforms like Kalshi grow in popularity, so do questions about whether they are fundamentally different from gambling — and whether they should exist at all. In this episode, Mosheh sits down with Kalshi co-founder and CEO Tarek Mansour for an in-depth conversation about the company's rapid rise and the controversy surrounding it. Kalshi is a sponsor of Mo News, but this interview was conducted independently, with no advance review of questions and no topics off limits. Mosheh presses him on some of the toughest questions submitted by the Mo News audience, including concerns about gambling addiction, market manipulation, insider trading, youth participation, and whether prediction markets provide real value to society. The conversation explores the origins of Kalshi, how prediction markets work, and why Mansour believes they can be a powerful tool for forecasting the future. We also talk about how the platform works with law enforcement and regulators. They also discuss the growing legal and political battles over prediction markets, why some states are trying to ban them, how the gambling industry is fighting them, how Kalshi differentiates itself from sportsbooks and other betting platforms. Whether you're a Kalshi user, a skeptic, or simply curious about one of the fastest-growing trends in finance and politics, this conversation offers a deeper look at the debate surrounding prediction markets and their future. Prediction markets have quickly become a major force shaping conversations around elections, sports, the economy, and breaking news. But as platforms like Kalshi grow in popularity, so do questions about whether they are fundamentally different from gambling — and whether they should exist at all.In this episode, Mosheh sits down with Kalshi co-founder and CEO Tarek Mansour for an in-depth conversation about the company's rapid rise and the controversy surrounding it. Kalshi is a sponsor of Mo News, but this interview was conducted independently, with no advance review of questions and no topics off limits.Mosheh presses him on some of the toughest questions submitted by the Mo News audience, including concerns about gambling addiction, market manipulation, insider trading, youth participation, and whether prediction markets provide real value to society. Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. In this episode of the Homeopathy247 podcast, host Mary sits down with Maha Mansour, a pediatrician turned homeopath, to discuss the rising rates of autism and how homeopathic medicine offers a profound, natural path to healing. Why are Autism Diagnoses Increasing? Maha explains that the incidence of autism is much higher today than 20 or 30 years ago. She attributes this to four main factors: Better Awareness: Parents and practitioners are more educated about autism. Broader Diagnostic Criteria: Milder forms of neurodivergence are now included in the diagnosis. Easier Access to Testing: Questionnaires and diagnostic tools are more readily available. Increased Toxic Load: Children are exposed to a significantly higher level of environmental toxins than in previous generations. The Mainstream Medical vs. Homeopathic Approach As a pediatrician, Maha notes that conventional medicine primarily offers supportive care for autism—using medications to suppress anxiety, inattention, or aggressive behaviors without providing a cure. However, homeopathy approaches autism differently. By using the CEASE Therapy protocol (Complete Elimination of Autistic Spectrum Expression), homeopaths view the brain damage caused by early toxic exposure as reversible. Understanding CEASE Therapy and Detox CEASE Therapy relies on two cornerstones: Constitutional Support: Treating the child holistically based on their unique physical and emotional symptoms. Isopathy (Homeopathic Detox): Identifying the specific environmental toxin (such as heavy metals, repeated antibiotics, steroids, or vaccines) that triggered the child's decline—often noted by parents as the moment their child was "never well since". Even when a toxin physically leaves the body, it leaves an "energetic imprint" on the cells. Homeopathy uses a highly diluted, potentized form of that exact substance to gently signal the body to clear the imprint and reset the nervous system. Real-Life Transformations Maha shares two incredible cases showing the depth of homeopathic healing: The Non-Verbal 10-Year-Old: A highly aggressive, non-verbal boy who suffered from severe insomnia and echolalia (repeating words). After constitutional care and detox, he became calm, started sleeping, stopped hitting, and was able to focus at school. The Impulsive Child: A child with mild autism and severe impulsivity struggled in a private school setting. Following his homeopathic protocol, his speech improved, his impulsivity faded, and he successfully transitioned to a mainstream public school where he now works independently. Tabarovsky focuses on the legacy of Soviet anti-Zionist propaganda and how it influenced modern discourse around Israel and antisemitism.Together, we unpack the historical roots of the Red-Green Alliance, including the role of Soviet Union propaganda campaigns against Zionism, the ideological overlap between revolutionary leftist movements and Islamist political thought, and how these ideas continue to shape political discourse today. We discuss how Soviet anti-Zionism reframed Jewish self-determination, why these ideological frameworks proved so durable, and how the language developed during the Cold War still appears in modern activism and international politics. This conversation explores the intellectual origins of the alliance, why these movements sometimes find common ground, and what understanding this history can reveal about contemporary political debates. In this episode we discuss:• The origins of the “Red-Green Alliance”• Soviet anti-Zionism and its influence on modern antisemitism• The ideological roots of Islamist political movements• How revolutionary left-wing frameworks intersect with Islamist politics• The Cold War origins of many anti-Israel narratives• Why these ideological alliances persist today• What understanding this history can reveal about modern political discourseOur GuestsHussein Aboubakr MansourResearcher and writer specializing in Arab political thought, Islamist ideology, and Middle Eastern intellectual history.Izabella TabarovskyScholar of Soviet propaganda and modern antisemitism, and senior fellow at the Z3 Institute.Follow Our GuestsHussein Mansourhttps://x.com/husseinmansourIzabella Tabarovskyhttps://x.com/IzaTabarovsky

My guest on Ep. 56 of TatD is someone whose persistence and sheer tenacity in keeping her music career alive and thriving is something I deeply relate to.Zou Zou Mansour - the driving force behind Philly rock band Soraia - has seen so many changes in her over twenty years fronting the band that she knows “better than this” when it comes to being attached. And this makes the longevity of the creative core of her band all the more special. While Soraia has definitely seen its share of guitar players come and go - I even did a brief stint with the band back in 2022 on some dates opening for Joan Jett - the foundation of Zou Zou, bassist Travis Smith, and drummer Brianna Sig (herself a previous guest on this show and an OG Meddling Kid) has remained constant for a decade.. no small feat. With a long history of working with big names like Little Steven Van Zandt and Jon Bon Jovi, the band has evolved into a self-driving touring machine that shows no sign of letting up.With a brand new single called “Queens and Pharaohs” dropping this month, the band continues to churn out gritty rock 'n' roll songs with Zou Zou's lyrical vision at the center. We met up recently at the Llanerch Diner in Upper Darby, PA and talked about her musical roots, some sweet memories of her many encounters with Joan Jett, and a surprisingly in-depth discussion of how we both started out as drummers. I think you're going to enjoy this conversation. I know I did!Enjoy!JKF

On June 22, 2025, the U.S. air force sent B2 bombers to destroy Iran's nuclear sites. Five days before that, on June 17, Hussein Aboubakr Mansour, observing the extent of Israel's military operations inside of Iran and its destruction of Iran's proxy network, published an essay in Mosaic with a counterintuitive argument: Israel's devastating strikes on the Islamic Republic would not lead to an Arab embrace of the Jewish state. Most observers assumed the opposite, that weakening Iran would accelerate normalization and that gratitude and commercial interests would drive the Gulf states closer to Jerusalem. Mansour argued instead that removing the Iranian threat would reduce the incentives for the Saudis to normalize relations with Israel. Seven months later, Mansour has written a follow-up analysis showing that recent events have borne out his thesis—and indeed exceeded his cautious predictions. Saudi Arabia hasn't just declined to normalize with Israel. It has launched an aggressive regional repositioning campaign, weaponizing anti-Zionism as a competitive instrument against the first Abraham Accords signatory, the United Arab Emirates. Mansour's latest piece, published this week in his Abrahamic Metacritique Substack, proposes a new way to grapple with the reality of two major changes that are decisively shaping regional dynamics: first, the dismantling of Iran's axis of resistance, and second, the changing nature of America's role in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Turkey, and Israel now each conduct foreign policy in order to optimize their particular national advantages with neither a dominant common adversary, as Iran was, nor the common umbrella of American leadership. Under these circumstances, Mansour argues, anti-Zionism will remain strategically useful and even grow in its political utility. He discusses all of this with Mosaic's editor Jonathan Silver.
