Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz sits down with legendary producer and entertainment executive Suzanne de Passe. From championing the Jackson 5 early in their career to producing Emmy Award–winning miniseries like Lonesome Dove, Suzanne's career is defined by vision, talent recognition, and breaking barriers in Hollywood. An Eclectic, Wonderful Childhood (02:16) Suzanne describes growing up in Harlem, attending the progressive private school New Lincoln, and spending summers in Martha's Vineyard.Suzanne's Superpower (12:46) Suzanne talks about her greatest talent: recognizing the talent of others and knowing what to do with it.The Meeting That Changed Everything (16:22) Through her friendship with Cindy Birdsong of The Supremes, Suzanne met Berry Gordy in 1967, a moment that changed her life forever."One Day, That's Gonna Be Me" (21:19) Standing under the Essex House sign, watching Diana Ross depart in one limo, and the other Supremes in another, Suzanne had a realization: she wanted to be a part of that world.Championing The Jackson 5 (31:39) When Bobby Taylor invited her to hear a young group of brothers sing four songs a cappella, “the hair on the back of my neck flew up,” Suzanne recalls. Despite Barry Gordy's initial resistance to signing another kid act, her relentless advocacy is what finally got the Jackson 5 their Motown audition.Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction (38:04) In 2024, Suzanne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Ahmet Ertegun Award, the fifth woman and the first solo living female recipient among male legends.Lonesome Dove (40:28) After optioning Larry McMurtry's unpublished novel for $50,000, Swifty Lazar called with news: it had won the Pulitzer Prize. The resulting CBS miniseries was nominated for 19 Emmys, won 11, and received a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award.Immortal Studio: The Next Chapter (51:17) Suzanne has launched the production company Immortal Studio with partners Madison Jones, Cory Martin, and investor Yang Ben Wang. Focused on premium television, the company already has full seasons scripted and is built to be nimble, artist-friendly, and protective of creative vision — avoiding the industry's usual “fingerprinting process,” where too many people try to leave their mark.Suzanne de Passe demonstrates that recognizing talent, whether in five kids singing a capella or an unpublished western novel, combined with persistence and vision, can build an entertainment legacy that spans decades.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Suzanne de PasseProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Suzanne de Passe:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzanne_de_PasseIMDB:https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0210867/Rock and Roll Hall of Fame:For more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.

Support naturel des motifs fan-out et fan-in. API simple: addTask("id", task), connect("fromId", "toId"). Prêt pour la production (observabilité, sécurité, durabilité, "human in the loop"). Anita Harwood needs our help finding a man named Marty who helped her on that fateful day of September 11th, 2001. This is one woman's good journey, traveling from the UK to the United States to attend a Michael Jackson concert, only to find herself in the middle of New York City on the morning when everything changed. It's also the story of kindness, specifically the kindness of one stranger who said yes when 18 year old Anita and her best friend needed it most. We found this story on Upworthy's Instagram page and reached out to Anita to see if she might want to come on World Gone Good, tell her story, and see if you, our good audience, might be able to help out in finding the missing Marty. If 9/11 taught us anything, it is this: good or bad, we are all in this together. Give a listen to Anita to see if you might be the person who helps her locate this stranger to give him the hug and thank you she's been waiting over 24 years to give him. _____________________________ Steve is busy at work on the third book in his cozy mystery series, THE DOG WALKING DETECTIVES. Bo DonaldsonTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Bo Donaldson. Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods had the number one song in America in June of 1974; with the timeless hit "Billy, Don't Be a Hero". They also had hits on the charts all throughout the 70's. In this episode, we chat about how he got into music, and how his band came to be. Bo shares great stories about his mom deciding that she was going to meet Dick Clark and get him to make her son's band famous.... and then she did it! We also discuss some of the band's early days, where they opened for The Osmonds for over 300 shows. I pry just a bit into Bo's personal life and try to get to the bottom of some of the rumors about him dating Valerie Bertinelli before Eddie Van Halen. Along the way, we chat about each of the charting hits for the band, other fun Dick Clark stories, some previous guests of this show, Bo's real age, and why on earth he likes Cincinnati's Skyline chili so darn much! Plus, he lets me play their number one hit, as well as a little-known television show theme song the band wrote at the request of Dick Clark. Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods are still playing occasional shows in and around Southern California, and they are even playing a show in Buffalo, Ny in July. What the Riff?!?
1974 - June: Lynyrd Skynyrd "Second Helping"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2025 33:56

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a success with their debut album, and continued to build a fan base when they opened for The Who on their Quadrophenia tour.  Many of the songs on their debut album were staples of their concerts in Jacksonville, Florida, where they had built their style over the years since the 60's.  Therefore it was not a sure thing that they would be able to sustain their success over time.  Those concerns were put to rest when they released their second album.Second Helping, a southern colloquialism for getting more of the same thing at the dinner table, cemented Lynyrd Skynyrd as the flag bearer for the Southern Rock genre.  At a time when a number of British artists - most notably the Rolling Stones - were digging into the rock and blues music of the American South, Lynyrd Skynyrd was the real thing.  They rode the power of their triple guitar set and the wit of Ronnie Van Zandt's lyrics to a commercial success, with the album going to number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart and certified as gold by September 1974.  While contemporary critics were more lukewarm, those reviews have been revised way upward over time.  Second Helping also contains the biggest hit of the group as well, the Southern anthem "Sweet Home Alabama."Lynyrd Skynyrd would go on to produce many more hit songs and records in the southern rock genre before tragedy took front man Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines in October 1977.  But Second Helping is the album that solidified their standing as an internationally successful band.Wayne takes us through this album for this week's podcast, and Brian Dickhute joins us in Bruce's absence. The Needle and the SpoonThis song would not be the only anti-drug track in the Skynyrd discography.  The lyrics describe a man coming out of rehab, and makes use of a wah wah pedal effect that was not common to most of Skynyrd's music, but fit with the heroin subject of the song.  Swamp MusicAlthough not released as a single, this song got plenty of air play on FM radio, as did most of the tracks on this album.  This fast -paced track describes life in the Florida swamps.  The members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were well acquainted with outdoor life, fishing for catfish, hunting, and other "redneck" activities.Sweet Home AlabamaEveryone knows this anthem of Southern rock.  This song was written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man," in which the band felt like the entire Southern United States was blamed for slavery.  Between the hook of the leading riff and the catchy lyrics, this song has become a staple of classic rock. This is Skynyrd's only top 10 hit, as it went to number 8 on the US charts.  Interestingly, none of the band members are from Alabama.Don't Ask Me No QuestionsGary Rossington and Ronnie Van Zandt wrote this song during a fishing trip.  Many think this is about a relationship, but it was a message to the record managers who were apathetic towards the band during the early days, but who turned demanding after they were a success.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: Main theme from the television series, "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."In this sitcom spin-off from "The Andy Griffith Show," Jim Nabors plays the lovable but naive Gomer Pyle, now enlisted into the Marine Corp.  Frank Sutton, who played Sergent Carter in this series, passed away in June 1974. STAFF PICKS:Help Me by Joni MitchellRob starts the staff picks with a single from Mitchell's sixth studio album, "Court and Spark."  This track is Mitchell's biggest single, and her only song to crack the top 10 in the US, going to  number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics describe a singer who knows she is falling for the wrong man, but is either powerless to stop it or doesn't want to call things off.Dancing Machine by the Jackson 5Brian brings us a song that hit number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 after a multi-year dry spell.  The Jackson 5 appeared on "Soul Train" performing this song, and Michael Jackson introduced the world to "the robot" dance routine.  The Jackson 5 had a Saturday morning cartoon which kept the group in the public conscious.Waterloo by ABBALynch features the song that made ABBA a household name when the Swedish group won the 1974 Eurovision Song contest singing this tune.  The lyrics compare falling in love to Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.  The name "ABBA" comes from the first letter of each of the singers' names.Tell Me Something Good by RufusWayne presents a funky song from a group featuring Chaka Kahn as lead vocalist.  Rufus is a one-hit wonder, with this song peaking at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Stevie Wonder wrote this song about a woman looking for a deeper relationship, not just a one night stand.  It was the first hit song that utilized the vocoder.  INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Dance with the Devil by Cozy PowellWe close out with a drum instrumental based on Jimi Hendrix' "Third Stone from the Sun."  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. It was a sloppy contest that contained a slow start by Baltimore, plenty of penalties and injuries throughout, but once again the Ravens offense proved that they are inevitable. Jake, Banks, and Spenny break it all down for you as things continue to roll in a positive direction for the birds. Thanks as always for listening, and we'll be back at you very soon. On Thursday's show: We get some updates on several stories happening in Fort Bend County, including Fort Bend ISD considering a formalized agreement with the nonprofit Friends of the Sugar Land 95 to access more funding for a memorial project, and a Sugar Land temple is increasing its security measures after backlash over a new religious statue. Also this hour: Polls show Americans are still mostly opposed to the idea of financial reparations for the descendants of slaves. With that in mind, we hear two differing viewpoints on that subject. Former Houstonian Joel Edward Goza explains why he changed his thinking about reparations and now thinks they are necessary for the country to move forward. He outlines why in his new book, Rebirth of a Nation: Reparations and Remaking America. Then, Reginald Bell, a professor at Prairie View A&M University, explains why he thinks reparations are a bad idea, which he outlined in a 2020 academic paper. Then, Texas Woman's University is the nation's largest university system focused primarily on women and touts an estimated 8,000 nursing alumni working in the Houston area today. We meet Dr. Monica Williams, the inaugural president of the TWU Houston campus, located in the Texas Medical Center. And we remember Tito Jackson of the Jackson 5, who died Monday. We hear some of what he had to say during a 2022 interview on I See U. And then we talk with Houston Chronicle music writer Joey Guerra about the musician's career and whether the Jackson 5's place in music history has become muted in comparison to the solo careers of siblings Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson.

For the first of our four-part series on the King of Pop, writer, professor and critic Emily Lordi joins Pop Pantheon to help us begin to untangle one of the most knotty legacies in pop history: the story of Michael Jackson. Emily and DJ Louie discuss Michael's extremely strict upbringing, sadistic abuse at the hands of his father Joe, and the creation of The Jackson 5, from playing the Chitlin' Circuit to landing a Motown deal and kicking off one of the greatest single runs in history, beginning with 1969's “I Want You Back.” Next they dig into The Jackson 5's prolific Motown output, the marketing of Michael as a child sensation and how Jacksonmania made the Jacksons into a symbol of post-civil rights promise in America. Finally, they work through the band's rebrand as The Jacksons, their post-Motown work, late '70s comeback and how the group's monumental success set Michael up for solo superstardom. Join us next week for Part 2, in which we will be talking about Michael's early solo work and his breakthrough as a solo star, 1979's Off The Wall. Listen to Pop Pantheon's Michael Jackson Essentials PlaylistJoin Pop Pantheon: All Access, Our Patreon Channel, for Exclusive Content and MoreShop Merch in Pop Pantheon's StoreBuy Tickets to our Dance Party Pop Pantheon Present: Main Pop Girls of '24 in NYC on August 2!Come to Gorgeous Gorgeous Lincoln Center on 7/20 FOR FREE!Come to Gorgeous Gorgeous: Los Angeles at Los Globos in Silver Lake on 7/26Follow DJ Louie XIV on InstagramFollow DJ Louie XIV on TwitterFollow Pop Pantheon on InstagramFollow Pop Pantheon on Twitter
