Send us a textJoin us for an enlightening conversation with Dr. Mitch Maki, President of the Go For Broke National Education Center, as we uncover the enduring legacy of Japanese American veterans from World War II. Discover the powerful story behind the phrase "Go For Broke" and how it became the rallying cry for the brave 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team. These soldiers, who faced fierce battles abroad and prejudice at home, became the most decorated unit of their size in U.S. military history. Dr. Maki shares his lifelong passion for preserving their stories, driven by his own childhood experiences in Los Angeles. We journey through America's past mistakes, examining the internment of Japanese Americans and its painful legacy. Reflecting on the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, we discuss how acknowledging these injustices can inform our approach to contemporary issues of race and political leadership. There's a yearning for the bipartisan cooperation once exemplified by leaders like Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan, and we explore how their spirit of unity can guide us in today's polarized world. By learning from history, we aim to foster a more cohesive society. This episode also highlights the innovative ways the Go For Broke organization inspires civic engagement among young Americans. Through storytelling initiatives like the Torchbearers program and the Go For Broke Journalism Institute, students connect historical events with modern-day issues, cultivating pride and a commitment to positive change. From fashion collaborations to journalism projects, we showcase the transformative power of these narratives in nurturing a deeper understanding of loyalty, sacrifice, and civic duty across generations.

In the message, "Go for Broke," Pastor Rich Whitter reflects on Mark 14:1-21, where Jesus is anointed by a woman with costly perfume and later shares the Passover meal with His disciples. Pastor Rich highlights the woman's extravagant act of devotion, demonstrating a “go for broke” attitude by giving her best to Jesus, regardless of the cost. This sacrificial love contrasts with Judas' betrayal, showing how divided hearts can hold us back from fully following Christ. Pastor Rich emphasizes the importance of giving all to Jesus, holding nothing back, and living with a wholehearted commitment. This message encourages you to assess what you are willing to lay down for Christ, and reminds us that our acts of worship, like the woman's, will always be remembered by God. Let this message inspire you to pour out your life in devotion to Jesus, trusting that He values and honors the sacrifices made for His kingdom.

I'd love to hear your thoughts - send me a text hereDanny Inouye wanted to be a doctor when he grew up - specifically, he wanted to be a surgeon. When he was a senior in high school he was a Red Cross volunteer. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor he saw the planes flying over Honolulu and rushed to an aid station where he treated civilians injured by falling anti-aircraft shells. As soon as he could, Danny enlisted in the army and was sent to Italy with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The war shattered his dream of becoming a doctor but a fellow wounded veteran, Bob Dole (yes, that Bob Dole) told him of his plan to become a lawyer and a politician in Kansas. Danny liked the sound of that, returned to Hawaii and entered politics as well. Little did he know he would become arguably the most influential politician in the history of Hawaii, whether the Kingdom, the Republic, or the State. The Ghosts of the Pacific Theme is Ukulele and Love Birds by emjaydabayou, with a few Waves of Hawaii added for ambiance. The Ghosts of the Pacific Transition music are some Uke Chords by turkitron. The outro music this week is the DC Area Hardcore Punk band Marginal Man's Missing Rungs. The U.S. Army's 442nd Infantry Regiment was a unit unlike any other . Many of their families were behind barbed wire in internment camps, and all of them suffered discrimination from their own country. They didn't just fight for America…they fought to prove they were Americans. And they became America's most decorated combat unit of World War II.Sources: https://www.unknownsoldierspodcast.com/post/episode-55-go-for-broke-sourcesAudible Recommendation: https://www.audible.com/pd/An-Army-at-Dawn-The-War-in-North-Africa-1942-1943-Audiobook/B00CBKIDUG?action_code=ASSGB149080119000H&share_location=pdpMusic:Superepic by Alexander Nakarada (CreatorChords) | https://creatorchords.comMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

I'd love to hear your thoughts - send me a text hereKen Otagaki grew up poor on a sugar cane plantation on Hawaii's Big Island, but after seeing how oppressed his father was by the overseers, he vowed that he would make his own way in the world and, despite cultural and familial expectations, he would not follow in his father's footsteps. In his early teens he moved by himself to Oahu, put himself through high school and the University of Hawaii, and more-or-less laid the foundations for the life of his dreams. That all came crashing down, first with the arrival of his draft notice when he should have been exempt due to his job in the agriculture industry, and second when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor thrusting the United States into war and making Otagaki - and all Nisei - personae non gratae in their own homes.Transferred to the 100th Infantry Battalion, Otagaki had to deal with being an infantry soldier and a stretcher bearer when he had absolutely no desire to be in the military at all.
I'd love to hear your thoughts - send me a text hereYoung Oak Park was likely the first (maybe the second) Korean American officer in the US Army and was assigned to the 100th Infantry Battalion in World War II, mainly because the army didn't know where else to put a non-Japanese Asian officer. No one believed in them when the unit was first stood up, but after a short time in combat, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team proved their mettle and soon had commanders at the army and corps level negotiating for their service. Because of this, they left Italy for France, saved a cut off battalion, and then came back to Italy to spearhead the finally victory against the Axis in that country. Thanks in part to the 100th Infantry Battalion blowing all their doubters's expectations out of the water during their training, FDR and the War Department decided to stand up another segregated Nisei unit - the 442nd Regimental Combat Team - made up of Nisei volunteers from Hawaii and the mainland (most of the 1200 volunteers from the mainland were interned at the time) and like the 100th before them, they did everything the Army asked of them and more while fighting in Italy against the German and Italian militaries. The Ghosts of the Pacific Theme is Ukulele and Love Birds by emjaydabayou, with a few Waves of Hawaii added for ambiance. The Ghosts of the Pacific Transition music are some Uke Chords by turkitron. As always, a very special thanks to Mountain Up Cap Company for its continued help to spread the word about the podcast on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/MountainUpCapCompany Climb to Glory! For more information about the podcast visit: · The GoA website: https://www.ghostsofarlingtonpodcast.com · Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ghostsofarlingtonpodcast· Twitter: https://twitter.com/ArlingtonGhosts· Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ghostsofarlington/
“We had Japanese faces but American hearts.” So says our special guest Yoshio Nakamura, a Japanese-American born in California. Yoshio experienced first-hand the upheaval of World War II when Japanese-Americans were classified as enemy aliens. He endured internment at Tulare Racetrack and Gila River Camp, facing humiliation and loss of freedom. Despite the injustice, he demonstrated loyalty to the U.S. by joining the Army, serving in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Nakamura participated in key battles in Europe, contributing to the unit's status as the most decorated in U.S. military history. After the war, he pursued education and became an art teacher. Despite hardships, Nakamura maintains a positive outlook on life. Also joining us is Dr. Mitchell T. Maki is the President and CEO of the Go For Broke National Education Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy and lessons of the Nisei (a person born in the US whose parents were immigrants from Japan) World War II veterans. The mission of GO FOR BROKE is to educate and inspire character and equality through the virtue and valor of our World War II American veterans of Japanese ancestry. Dr. Maki is also the lead author of the award-winning book, Achieving the Impossible Dream: How Japanese Americans Obtained Redress, a detailed case study of the 1988 Civil Liberties Act. Nearly fifty years after being incarcerated by their own government, Japanese American concentration camp survivors succeeded in obtaining redress for the personal humiliation, family dislocation, and economic ruin caused by their ordeal. An inspiring story of wrongs made right as well as a practical guide to getting legislation through Congress, Achieving the Impossible Dream documents the redress movement from its earliest roots during World War II, the formal introduction of the idea in the 1970s, the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, the judicial battles during the 1980s, and the lobbying of the legislative and executive branches in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000, the book received the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award which is given to books addressing bigotry and human rights in North America. Dr. Maki has held the positions of acting Provost and Vice president of Academic Affairs, Vice Provost of Student Academic Success, dean of the Colleges of Professional Studies and Health and Human Services (CSUDH), acting dean of the College of Health and Human Services at CSU Los Angeles and assistant professor in the Department of Social Welfare at UCLA. As acting Provost, Dr. Maki provided academic and strategic leadership for CSUDH's five academic colleges which served over fifteen thousand students. After Pearl Harbor, many Nisei were kicked out of the military. All those that were retained were sent to Hawaii. A few new Japanese Americans were allowed to enlist, but most were deemed as "enemy aliens" by recruiting boards. By 1943, all new Nisei recruits were barred from entry. Those few that had already been stationed in Hawaii were formed into a single infantry battalion, the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), sent to the mainland for training, and then sent to Italy to fight for the country that had interned more than 100,000 Americans of Japanese descent. They were subjected to racism and doubt but they proved their naysayers wrong every step of the way. This Week's Ghosts of the Pacific are:1. Army Lieutenant Colonel Farrant L. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, an irrational fear struck the United States that its relativly small population of Japanese immigrants and the native born US citizen children of those immigrants posed a threat to national security. They made up too much of the population on Hawaii to do anything about them but those living on the mainland west coast were rounded up and moved into internment camps, which is a nice way to say concentration camps. Nevertheless, those US citizen interrned on the mainland and their Hawaii-based counterparts longed for the chance to prove their loyalty to their homeland. They were eventually given the change and the two (nearly) all-Japanese American units of World War II - the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 44nd Regimental Combat Team - went on to become the some of the highest decorated units in US Army history. Today begins the multi-part podcast of their story.
Shortly after Japan launched its surprise attack on Naval Station Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, resulting in over 100k West Coast citizens and residents of Japanese descent into incarceration camps. Racism against Japanese Americans rapidly increased as distrust ballooned. What many Americans failed to realize was that Japanese Americans were also inflamed at the attack on Pearl Harbor. Afterall, they were Americans, too. In this story we follow the lives of three Japanese-American marines who joined the newly created 442nd division in France in 1943- leaving behind their families on the US west coast- families which had been forced to give up their possessions and move to internment camps due to a national panic caused by fear of a Japanese attack on the west coast. The legendary tenacity of the Japanese-American Regimental Combat Division throughout 7 campaigns in Italy and France made them the most decorated unit for their size and length of service in US history. Dr. Jeremy Salkeld talks with Dr. Mitch Maki of the Go For Broke National Education Center about Japanese-American internment, the 442nd Infantry Regiment, and the Japanese-American campaign for redress and recognition in the postwar decades. Also discussed are relations between Hawaiian-born and continental-born Japanese-Americans, and the efforts of the Go For Broke center's efforts to promote awareness and bring about positive social change. 36 mins.
Welcome to Season 3, Episode 31. We were so excited to connect with Dr. Mitchell T. Maki, the President and CEO of the Go For Broke National Education Center. Dr. Maki is lifetime educator, author, and a leading scholar on the Japanese American redress movement. The Go For Broke National Education Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy and lessons of the Nisei World War II veterans. “Go For Broke” was the motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an Army unit composed of Japanese Americans from Hawai'i and the mainland United States. We've talked about the 100th and 442nd previously on our podcast, but we're always happy to continue to raise awareness around their bravery and dedication to this country despite the mass incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese Americans during the war. In our conversation, Dr. Maki shares some keys to making history relevant, why continuing to talk about this time is essential, the importance of intersectionality, and so much more. You can learn a lot and help the Go For Broke National Education Center by visiting their YouTube channel and website as well as making a donation. The funds help spread awareness and education through virtual and physical exhibits. We especially love the Hanashi Oral History Collection! AMRAP : 14 60 Cal Row50 Toes To Bar40 Wall Balls30 Power Cleans 20 Ring Muscle upsShould you RX or SCALE?If you feel confident with toes to bar, wall balls and power cleans at those weights and standards, HIT RX! The ring muscle ups are a bonus for your fitness! Just be sure that you push the pace on the power cleans to maximize your tie break if you do not plan on getting more than a few muscle ups (if any)If you don't quite have toes to bar or you feel insecure about the weight, I think scaling is fine to optimize your expression of FITNESS. Push to try and match the scores of some of the best in the RX division! Strategy Notes:Go into this workout with the end goal in mind. What would be a realistic goal for you? Then backtrack from there. Row - This should be a hard but manageable pace. You should feel an effort of around 7 out of 10 but should be able to get right to work on the toes to bar. Think of a pace you can maintain between 3-4 min for men and 4-5 min for women. Before going into this workout, get on the rower and try out a couple of different paces to figure out what feels best for you. Toes To Bar - Manage your grip. Be sure to keep the rest of the work ahead of you in mind. Small sets and even singles can be faster because it doesn't require much effort to hop back up on the bar. Just manage your overall rest time and ensure to try and keep a consistent cadence.Wall Balls - I think most should be able to push here. With only 40 reps, bigger sets will save you some time. 1-2 sets would be ideal but you can also be very efficient at 4 x 10 with very short breaks to allow the shoulders to recover. Power cleans - If you plan to get to the muscle ups, small sets or quick singles. Unless you have amazing grip strength and you have no need to touch and go big sets here. If you are planning on going for a good tie break and seeing what you can do for muscle ups, then GO FOR BROKE! HIt it hard and don't be afraid to hurt a little here. Ring Muscle Ups - CONGRATULATIONS! You earned some RING TIME! If you are a ninja, CRUSH IT! If you struggle. SMALL SETS and SINGLES with short rest will be much more effective. If you are a beast and get back to the rower, PULL HARD. Pacing is NO LONGER needed!Nutrition:This is a higher output workout with it being highly glycolytic. Be sure to take in 10-30g of protein and 40-60g of carbs 90-120 min before you start moving around and warming up. Simple carbs and proteins are your best friend! Have a similar blend post workout! Most importantly, stick to food and meal timing that your body is familiar with! Most importantly HAVE FUN!
On this episode Phillip and his cousin Chip dive into another movie on the list of Quentin Tarantino recommendations, The Master Touch AKA A Man to Respect. This Italian, American, and German production of a heist film starring Kirk Douglas was a fun one. The guys start the show by making some corrections from the last episode. Then Phillip sets the mood by playing a radio spot from 1972 for a place called Burger Chef. It's then time to dive into and talk about this movie starring Kirk Douglas, Guiliano Gemma, and Florinda Bolkan. The movie is available on Youtube and Tubi with ads. The plot of The Master Touch is; A just released from prison professional thief decides to do one last high-risk heist, which could settle him for life or land him behind bars again. It's a fun heist film that starts out slow but gets cooking as it goes. After the guys go through talking about the movie, they then talk about whether they would buy it, rent it, or watch it for free. Then they rate the movie. Phillip then talks about a movie that he recommends called Go For Broke (1985). They close the episode out by having the randomizer pick their next film from the list to watch. We hope you enjoyed the episode. So come back on February 3rd for Succubus AKA Necronomican (1968). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/makingtarantinothepodcast/message

Brandon Weichert discusses Ukraine and how Russia desires to be its own civilizational state or empire (as opposed to being under Western hegemony). Because of demographics, Moscow doesn't have much time so Putin is plugging the strategic gaps on his western border now. He believes the threat of escalation is greater now than during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He discusses the unconventional and asymmetric threats of cyber and space warfare….the 'shadow war'. We are not reading the Russian signals very well, they are less afraid of unintended consequences. For Putin, this is his go-for-broke Peter the Great moment. We discuss the decline of the dollar's status as world reserve, how other countries have seen the writing on the wall, and how the nightmare scenario of an Eurasian axis has come to be. He also discusses his forthcoming book on Iran's quest for supremacy.
