As virtual DragonCon approaches, we're virtually catching up with some of our favorite DragonCon people. And our guest this week is another old friend, coming to you all the way from Tennessee: Strange Animals Podcast host Kate Shaw! Kevin and Kate met through the small press publishing scene of the 90s, before they traded in their photocopiers and staplers for microphones and digital recorders. Now they meet up at DragonCon every year (except, you know, this year), and their DragonCon memories include steampunk owl-catcher costumes, birdwatching in the rain, and trying to give away a banana. Kate is working with DragonCon's Digital Media track again this year, and we'll share her virtual panel schedule soon, assuming we're not all devoured by giant ice worms. Also this week: DragonCon beverages, the DragonCon parade, Mary Tyler Moore costume groups, and Bigfoot. (Warning: As the convention gets closer, this show gets weirder.)

In 2017, Pennywise – a name synonymous with fear, clowns, and fiscal responsibility – returned to the big screen for the first time since 1990. Earning over $700 million at the box office, it quickly became the highest-grossing horror film of all time. In 2019, the terror returns, as director Andy Muschietti brings us back for Chapter Two. But compared to the novel, how do these films bring Stephen King’s terrifying vision to life? Why has It become such an international sensation? Where does Pennywise sit in the canon of monstrous icons? Who was the better Pennywise? What does this mean for the future of horror? Join Jack and Alex as they float across the Atlantic to the town of Derry, spotting turtles and sewage, and discuss the raw boundlessness of It and the human imagination. Warning: As always, this episode contains spoilers.

In Saskia's talk from a Royal Geographical Society conference in April (her first time speaking at an academic conference!), she looks at how Englishness, 'race' and class have played out in debates around Brexit. Taking David Goodhart's book 'The Road to Somewhere' as an influential example, she discusses how the division the British media has made between the Northern 'white working-class' and the London 'metropolitan elite' plays into racist nationalism by positioning white people as English and people of colour as 'other'. Saskia argues that we need to challenge these racialised understandings of Englishness, in part by reimagining the English North-South divide and questioning the dominance England's capital plays in national life. Warning: As it's at an academic conference, not all the jargon will be explained in the talk, but all the texts Saskia references are available on our website!

Did anyone say stick to sports? Baseball’s slowest offseason collides with the national mood when Deadspin’s David Roth returns to break down a case of universal paralysis and, of course, supply his particular brand of Mets ennui.WARNING: As is typical of a David Roth episode, there is the occasional profanity.TABLE OF CONTENTSWayne Garland and Mother-Love*Connie Mack and the Wilpons*David Roth: The thin line between Collusion and Cincinnati, OH*The fantasy of doing more with less*The McCourt Dodgers period as forerunner of the apocalypse*The Astros Way might only work for the Astros (not the Pirates)*Going to the Mets game can be cheaper than going to Shake Shack alone*Doubleheaders and congealed fried chicken*No cheering in the press box (seriously)*The Dead Hand of Adrian Gonzalez*Brandon Nimmo’s true nickname*The Hall of Fame vote (Jim Thome full of love and good will)*Gary Sheffield*Goodbyes. The Infinite Inning is not only about baseball but a state of mind. A departure from my typical Skype interview, today’s episode is all about gym owners sitting around, shooting the s%&t. This week we’re joined by some of the 321Go team - Stefan Cox from CrossFit Turbine, Don Moss from CrossFit Apogee, Ashley Bacsu from CrossFit 317, and Jamie Gallagher from CrossFit Burke. We chat about the importance of finding other entrepreneurs to share the struggle, hiring and firing staff, and finally viewing yourself as a professional business (and charging accordingly). WARNING: As you can imagine getting a bunch of gym owners in the same room can get a bit colorful. Today’s episode is slightly less PG-13 than our usual format.
That's right, my dearest friends. This episode is all about you... my wonderful friends! And what that even means. Warning: My voice is extremely tired in recording this podcast. Warning: As a result, it sounds super sexy. Male listeners beware! As always, show notes and more at www.brianahansen.com!
