Trumpeter Dave Bilger has had a stellar career as both a performer and also as an educator. He was principal trumpet with the Dallas Symphony, and following that, principal trumpet with the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years. In addition to the 27 years he's taught at the Curtis Institute of Music, he's also Professor of Trumpet at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music and has given master classes around the world. As an example of how music can have a profound influence on a person's, and even a family's, life, we begin our conversation with my asking Dave about how he was able raise funds in order to bring Baset Azizi from Afghanistan to the United States and how that impacted not only Baset, but his family as well. Dave continues by talking about his two main teachers and their different approaches to teaching, David Hickman and Mark Gould... in addition to his week of study with Tom Stevens. As a student, Dave was a member of the summer student orchestra, the Colorado Philharmonic, and talks about what it was like to have Michael Sachs (principal trumpet, Cleveland Orchestra) and Doug Prosser (principal trumpet, Rochester Philharmonic) as room-mates during his second year. We end part one with an extended discussion of auditions, including musical preparation, mental approaches, and some current issues with the orchestral audition process.Dorico Professional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. Is 11 years in prison for streaming football matches disproportionate, considering worse crimes get less time behind bars? On this episode of The Straight Shootin' View our co-host SSLJA welcomes Coach JBK & Nathan 'Arsenal' on as they talk about a recent court case involving a friend of SSLJA's (Mark Gould) who was jailed for 11 years for his role as the ringleader of the group behind the illegal streaming platform Flawless, which streamed Premier League matches, including matches NOT shown due to the 3pm blackout rule. There Is a petition for Mark Gould which you can sign here - https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-injustice-disgraceful-sentencing-of-the-11-years-for-a-streaming-service?source_location=topic_page SSLJA, Nathan & JBK discuss the case and give their views on the 11 year sentence for Mark Gould, in comparison to the others behind Flawless who got 3 years each and they discuss the Premier League taking this unusual step of privately prosecuting individuals so aggressively and discuss some comparisons of worse crimes, that have got less than 11 years. Our co-hosts look at a few examples of other cases and also look at why people turn to piracy in the first place, and if the Premier League are basically forcing people to illegally stream, in a cost of living crisis that people need respite from, but unfortunately have to pay exorbitant prices for. Today's guest is my good friend Jerome Burns. For those of you who might not know Jerome, he is that crazy trumpet player that has been posting his insane transcriptions for the trumpet of Meshuggah guitar solos. Jerome is a graduate of the Manhattan School of music where he studied under Mark Gould, and is also a specialist on the music of Karheilnz Stockhausen, having completed the Master's Degree in Aus Licht under the tutelage of Marco Blaauw in Holland. This episode deals with many subjects most notably “student” mentality and its trappings, and the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen. This episode was recorded over a year ago, so some of the talk might seem dated. I wanted to have Jerome on because he was successful at something that the vast majority of people in the professional classical music sphere failed to do: create meaningful and unique online musical content during the COVID lockdowns. While even lauded professionals were posting lackluster videos of themselves playing orchestral excerpts and warmups, Jerome delighted us all every Monday with his fiendishly difficult and profound renditions of metal music transcriptions. By doing this, in my mind, he joined the ranks of other artists like Håkan Hardenberger, Wynton Marsalis, Dan Rosenboom, Peter Evans, Stephanie Richards, and a selected few more who offered listeners something worth their attention. I eagerly await what is next from Jerome, when he finally puts all he has learned in the last two years into a practical setting, you will surely see me purchasing the first ticket. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/artssalon/support

So it was interesting to hear Mark’s thoughts on so many different aspects of music and the music business. In Part 1 of our conversation, I ask Mark about a number of his ideas about teaching, how he approaches each individual student differently, and how using humor can be a help in teaching, including ways to make concepts memorable. I ask him how he would teach me as a young student, he talks about the sound and approach of Adolph Herseth, and we end with a few funny stories of his time with the Metropolitan Opera.

Mark has been criticized by lesser intellects for his bold activities, but it is undeniable that behind Mark's antics is a true concern for the arts and a deep love for music. I cannot overstate how important this love is when attempting to transform or criticize the nature of art. Currently there is a lot of talk about how to improve classical music to better reflect modernity, and the sinner's and catholic school children mea culpas in vogue are more often than not repulsive and useless. Most people joining these conversations seem to be dishonest actors. We need to fine-tune our senses to distinguish between the people seeking change because they want to preserve things, and those who simply critique to destroy. Two things to learn about Mark Gould, if you don't already know them. 1: He was principal trumpet of the Met Opera for an absolutely staggering 29 years; and 2: He's a man that says what he means, and means what he says. This makes for a veritable storm of interestingness constantly surrounding him, from his side project Pink Baby Monster (performances sometimes usually NSFW), to running for president in 2012, to his students' total infestation of the professional trumpet scene (obviously in large part wrought by his teachings), and NOW—to one of our best Brass Chats yet
