In this week's podcast, NACCHO Government Affairs team members Adriane Casalotti and Kerry Allen provide an update on the status of federal funding and discuss NACCHO's priorities for a possible Fiscal Year 2023 omnibus appropriations bill. They also review the progress made on legislation to establish a public health loan repayment program, and ongoing NACCHO efforts to get that across the finish line before the 117th Congress ends, including an upcoming opportunity for NACCHO members to engage with their federal lawmakers in support of the program. Adriane describes the implications of and discussion around the recent CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommendations on the COVID-19 vaccine. Finally, the team reminds listeners that many public health policy decisions will hinge on the outcome of the upcoming midterm elections and urges everyone to vote. Later in the program, we talk about one of the latest outbreaks – monkeypox (MPX) – with Dr. Philip Huang, Director of the Dallas County Health and Human Services, Andy Meléndez Salgado, MPH, Manager of the Public Health Emergencies and Environmental Health Unit of the New Orleans Health Department, and Dr. Judith Shlay, Associate Director of the Public Health Institute at Denver Health. We discuss how local health departments are working to reach populations at risk for MPX and how lessons learned from COVID-19 response are helping local jurisdictions to address MPX.

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Washington Federal Bank has a history of planning for the future that established it as one of the most highly capitalized banks in America. This foresight has helped it weather challenging economies while continuing to support its clients. Marlise Fisher, the bank's Regional President, is here to talk about how they're working to protect client assets and provide opportunities for continued growth in Utah. MARLISE FISHER While Covid-19 has been challenging for everyone, Washington Federal Bank is working to ease the strain on Utah businesses. Shortly after the pandemic hit, we began offering 90-day interest free Small Business Lifeline loans that have helped more than twelve hundred businesses. The bank also assisted more than 6,000 businesses to secure operating capital through the SBA's PPP loan program. Nearly half of these were new clients that were unable to get the help they needed from their previous banks. Washington Federal's commitment to Utah extends to its employees as well, actually adding staff through the pandemic, and by providing a month of full pay to those employees who felt unsafe coming to work. The bank continues to offer services through our drive-through tellers and ATMs, and we are working toward fully opening each branch as soon as is prudent with the latest CDC guidance. DEREK MILLER We are grateful for Washington Federal's ongoing support for Utah businesses and their leadership by example. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, and this is Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: June 25, 2020.

Washington Federal — a $16.4 billion regional institution based in Seattle — had a problem: many in the general public didn’t realize exactly what it did. Was it a federal government agency? Was it a credit union? To make it clearer, the company recently rebranded itself to WaFd Bank. “Banking is a noble profession,” says WaFd President and CEO Brent Beardall on the latest episode of the ABA Banking Journal Podcast. “We were very happy to put the word ‘bank’ in our name and tell people what we do.” Among the unique things that WaFd Bank does: holding consumer mortgage loans in portfolio, allowing it to be more flexible with customers in tough times; as well as making paycheck replacement loans to government employees during the most recent government shutdown. Beardall also discusses WaFd Bank’s performance and growth in markets that range across the west from Washington state to Texas; the role of midsize regional banks in the nation’s financial ecosystem; and WaFd Bank’s technological and cultural evolution to be a digital-first institution, including being more tolerant of failure and experimentation.

I'm back after Vegas and illness. Back to take on big banks BS. First, I talk about how our Vigilante Customer Service rescued $21,000 from Bank of America for a follower named Royce. Royce was a small business owner who had a great business going, until BofA saw him as competition and froze his account with his money in it, leaving it frozen for 3 months. We fought hard to get it back. I explain how! Plus Bank of left a lot of cities in NM on November 1, 2013. I worked at one of the branches in Socorro, NM that got sold to Washington Federal because Bank of America claimed to be "successful in teaching residents about the benefits of digital banking. Learn how Bank of America spun the sale, and sold a bunch of banks to a smaller bank with lesser quality. Learn why my dream of being the manager of the Socorro, NM Branch will never happen because of BofA lies. MY PATREON Page! The American Bankers Association and Washington Federal, a bank holding company, have filed a suit against the United States government for reducing the amount of dividends paid to banks that own Federal Reserve stock. In the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, the Federal Reserve agreed to pay 6% annual dividends to stockholders of regional Federal Reserve Banks, but Congress decreased that amount to 2% in 2015 in the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, or FAST Act, which appropriated the other 4% of would-be-dividends for highway funding. Proponents of the change argue that 6% dividends were exorbitant returns for the stock, and that banks are still guaranteed a positive return, even at 2%. -- Brett Shumate and Steve Obermeier of Wiley Rein, who represent the plantiffs in this case, joined us to discuss the pending litigation. -- Featuring: Stephen J. Obermeier, Partner, Wiley Rein LLP and Brett A. Shumate, Partner, Wiley Rein LLP.
Johnny Holliday on Howard Cosell - "He takes my headset, puts it on, "Angel, let's go. Let's go." He goes, "3, 2, 1. Hello, everyone. Howard Cosell, the Sports Arena in Los Angeles. Time to talk about the American ... Back in a moment." Takes a break, comes back, does the second half. Now we're going to do the show for National. Does the same thing, takes his headset off, throws it down in front of me, picks up the cigar, looks at me and says, "That's how you do a show" and walks away. He had no stopwatch. He was right on time." Johnny Holliday, TV and Radio Sportscaster, Actor and Former Top 40 Disc Jockey A Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town. I was just singing the song about, "Oh, Johnny, oh, Johnny." I don't know. It's an old song but I'm an old song too. Johnny Holliday is one of the most favorite, favorite wonderful people in the world and a very dear friend of mine and of WMAL. I followed his career even before he didn't even know it because he hopped around the country. Johnny, thank you for being with us. This is Our Town, Johnny. This is College Park, Vienna. Johnny Holliday: This is your town basically. A Ockershausen: At one time it was. Johnny Holliday: But still is. Believe me. A Ockershausen: This has been yours but when you came to WMAL you lit a light on us that never went out and all the things you did here for us and what you did for the University of Maryland. Remember we started with this broadcast and I even recall Johnny Holliday in something called the Washington Federal. Johnny Holliday: I do remember that. Yes. The now defunct Washington Federal. That was a good experience, though. A Ockershausen: You know what, Johnny? We went first class with that if you remember. There were three of you. Johnny Holliday: That's right. A Ockershausen: Pete Wysocki worked with you and you did the play by play and you had one of the extra Redskins… Johnny Holliday: I think, didn't Kim McQuilken was the guy? A Ockershausen: He was the quarterback. Johnny Holliday: He was one of the analysts, yeah. A Ockershausen: Kim McQuilken. Son of a gun. Johnny Holliday: Yeah, back-up quarterback with the Redskins. A Ockershausen: Who else was on the broadcast? His son became a Redskin later. The football player. He played for the Cardinals. He was traded to the Redskins. Johnny Holliday: Oh, that would have been ... Was it Terry Metcalf? A Ockershausen: Terry Metcalf. Yeah. He was a sideline reporter. Johnny Holliday: Right. Exactly. A Ockershausen: With Jack Scarbath. We've had some great people work at WMAL, but Johnny, not as great as you. Everybody knows you from the University of Maryland. They don't know about you as I do because I found out many years ago your talents are so many. One that particularly impressed me is the radio disc jockey. The days are gone, Johnny. I don't know of any disc jockeys. Top 40 Disc Jockey - WHK - Cleveland Johnny Holliday: Yeah, I tell young guys today that it's too bad that they couldn't have been in yet back in the '60s, late '50s, '60s, '70s before the broadcast whole industry changed. A Ockershausen: World changed. Absolutely. Johnny Holliday: In those days the disc jockeys were like pied pipers. The kids could connect, the young adults could connect with the guys. The recording artists could connect with them as well. It was a whole different atmosphere as compared to what it is today. I'll never forget in Cleveland I had two record hops every weekend to supplement my income. A Ockershausen: You always did that, Johnny. Have you ever worked anywhere when you weren’t supplementing your income? Johnny Holliday: I'm still doing it today after all these years. In Cleveland I had a dance on a Friday night and a dance on a Saturday night sponsored by Coca-Cola. We had WHK color channel 14 ... A Ockershausen: Powerhouse radio station.
