Bell Work Talks

In this Bell Work Talk, Dr. O'Briant will discuss that violence and abuse in rural America is exacerbated by limited access to support services for victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) due to family connections with people in positions of authority, geographic isolation, transportation barriers, stigma of abuse, lack of available shelters and affordable housing, poverty as a barrier to care, and other challenges. Victims of abuse who live in small communities may be well-acquainted with local health care providers and often voter-elected law enforcement officers. Individuals may fear being seen walking into a mental health clinic, with subsequent (and reality-based) fear that deter them from seeking help. Thus, advances in technology are becoming a much-needed option. Although telehealth has been used for some time in rural health settings, only in more recent years has there been an increase toward quality trauma-informed care. With increasing focus on the impact of social determinants of health, agencies continue to shift to telehealth to provide virtual support. Specifically, telehealth visits can potentially extend the reach of the limited number of primary care and mental health providers to those who are significantly in need of services. Deborah O'Briant is a nursing educator with over 20 years as an RN and 13 years of experience as a family nurse practitioner working in a variety of clinical settings, including the Emergency Room. She currently teaches at Texas A&M University College of Nursing and is the coordinator for the Family Nurse Practitioner Master degree (MSN) program and the interim coordinator for the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. She has a strong interest in rural healthcare and helps provide care to women in underserved communities in Texas using grant funds awarded to Texas A&M College of Nursing. In today's episode of the "Fasting for Life" podcast, we discuss using fasting as a tool for better health and wellness, sharing their personal transformations and offering actionable advice. We question the effectiveness of Body Mass Index (BMI) in measuring health and advocate using the Body Roundness Index (BRI) and waist-to-height ratio as better indicators of visceral fat, which is linked to higher health risks. We emphasize tapping into long-term fat stores through fasting rather than calorie restriction, which often keeps insulin levels high and doesn't target stubborn fat effectively. We encourage listeners to consistently implement fasting strategies, use more accurate health metrics, and potentially join their programs for support in achieving health goals. Would you like to know about ten unique ways that your small group can evangelize together? Steve Gladen, Small Groups Pastor at Saddleback Church, pulls from his 25 plus years of small group ministry experience to encourage and equip listeners to lead healthier, growing and more effective small groups and small group ministries. In this episode, Steve and Dereksit down with special guest Kiersten Telzerow to discuss ten innovative ways that small groups can break out beyond the walls to share the good news with people in their community. 10 Ways Your Group Can Evangelize Kiersten - Groups Pastor @ NCC in DCDMIN: Wholistic Discipleship– passionate about ways that groups can engage in mission on a regular basis– being the hands and feet of ChristDo the leg work up front– don't just sign your group up for something - because then everyone will feel like they have to do it and that's not mission ;) Of first time Health Assessment takers 87% evangelism is self selected as lowSet up Personal, Local and GlobalPersonal—1 Corinthians 3:6-7 (Plant, Water, and Harvest)Local/Global—Homa and Away Teams Don't overcomplicate it- first and foremost- don't try to put a 1-week overseas trip on the calendar for all 15 people in your small group- never say never, but the likelihood is that may not happen.Keep it simple and consistent- if we know those who experience the greatest transformation in community in a small group- why wouldn't we believe the same to be true of mission? The more we keep showing up– the easier it gets. It's like flexing a muscle. If we don't have the gift of mercy or evangelism- it can be harder to flex this muscle- so start with something easy.Pray about & strategize it- What's one of the areas that's a great need? Is there a local cause that is close to the church or your small group? Are there places that a group could rotate so maybe it doesn't work on everyone's schedule all at once, but you can take shifts. Serving 2 Saturdays/month.Find what people are passionate about– leverage strengths/ gifts in group. & the most important thing is do it together– model it together, live it out- express the Gospel through our lifestyle/everyday living. Practically speaking:Prayer Walk- Reimagine mission – what that could look like in your group– prayer walk your neighborhood or around your church. Every summer our groups engage in 40 days of prayer walks- in their neighborhoods, at their workplaces, etc. Prayer walking is still living on mission! **Have everyone in your group be praying for 3 people consistently in their sphere of influence.See if your group can “adopt” a cause like taking turns providing respite care to families who are fostering or every year your group puts together shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.Food- Make lunches for homeless friends- if that doesn't already exist- make that a small group! Or, every other week I'm a part of a reconciliation lunch at our Dream Center and I'll bring people with me– listening to people's stories is a way of partnering with Jesus- doing what He did wherever we go.Evangelize in your own neighborhood–(together or individually) If you all live in the same community- ask what you can do in your community. Several of our group members all live in the same area and so we realized there was a gap of a chaplain down at our police precinct- one day we had an incident in the neighborhood and I just said hey I'm a pastor, I live over here- if there's anything I can do please let me know… there's several of us from the same church in the area if anyone needs anything.Never underestimate the small- hidden things. Our small group is made up of bakers- we are always baking things, giving them away, etc. So one time we made a batch of cookies with invites to Easter services attached. I thought- small things- maybe it'll cheer a neighbors day up. Everyone in the group can do this wherever they live- but just deliver goods to neighbors on a regular basis- you never know the difference. Recently I had a neighbor I've been praying for, and she came up to me and said I just needed you to know the difference you made by dropping off those sweets- I'd like to go to church with you one day if that's possible. I was floored- over a batch of cookies.Neighborhood block party.  Invite your group host home to had a block party (or someone else in your group if thats better) to invite their street to a block party.  Either the group, the church, whoever can sponsor it and have a gathering.  This is a great way to live for Jesus in front of lost peopleWrite out your 1-, 3- and 10-minutes testimony and share it with your small group.Identify your One Life who doesn't know Christ and share with the group what stage you are at with them (plant, water, or harvest) and your next step.Have a party with your small group and invite your One Life(s). Let them see Christians having fun.Explore people different than you, attend an ethic mom and pop restaurant and learn about their culture. ★ Support this podcast ★

Picture yourself living what seems like a regular life as a parent and entrepreneur, where everything seems uneventful and you have every reason to expect the rest of your life to follow a pretty straightforward path. You know, everything's FINE.Then, one day you go to pick up your kids from school and all of a sudden you're seeing double.Next thing you know, your life has been turned completely upside-down, your legs are numb and you're sitting in a wheelchair. In what version of reality could you picture yourself becoming an Olympic weightlifter just five years later? This is Kim Rahir's story of how Fine is a 4-Letter Word.Fortunately, she was raised with two values that would support her through her unexpected midlife journey – always be ready to show up and perform, and conscientiously show respect for people and take them as you find them.Along with these values, she became a person who did not wallow in self-pity or claim victimhood status. There was no asking “why me?” when faced with adversity. When she first started seeing double that day when she was 45 and picking her kids up from school, her doctor suggested she might be experiencing a cerebral hemorrhage and urged her to hail the next taxi to the hospital. After a long series of tests combined with the onset of additional health issues, it eventually became apparent she had Multiple Sclerosis (MS).Now wait – five years later she was at the gym training to become an Olympic-level weightlifter? As you're about to discover, her doctor discouraged her from doing it in a way that indicated he didn't want to be involved. She was told to take all sorts of injections that made her feel worse, and ultimately traded them in for some ibuprofen. All of it made her feel disrespected, and she had to find a way to reclaim her power. This isn't the outcome you'd imagine for someone who has Multiple Sclerosis - nor would you picture her becoming a fitness coach helping women feel fabulous doing 15 minutes of work each day.In a moment, when you meet Kim, you'll be awestruck by her comeback story.Kim's hype song is “Far From Over” by Frank Stallone.Resources:Kim Rahir's website: https://kimrahir.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kim-rahir/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kim.rahir/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kim.rahir/ Take Kim Rahir's free Strength and Health Assessment today to find out exactly where you are at and what will be your best next steps: https://link.roasmail.com/widget/survey/GiXtvmtUw9cHkOlCRRLG Invitation from Lori:In my special guide, 5 Easy Ways to Start Living the Sabbatical Life, you'll discover, step-by-step, how you can stop settling for “fine” and look at your life with a fresh set of eyes even if, like many people in today's high-speed world, you're not in a position to take a month or year-long sabbatical. Nocturnal erections are the sixth vital sign no one talks about, which is a leading indicator of your vascular health. Dr. Justin is the CEO and Founder of FirmTech, focusing uniquely on the intersection of sexual and cardiac health. There are wearables of numerous health categories, but one that focuses on our intimacy has been non-existent until now. FirmTech's award-winning Tech ring—the first smart intimacy wearable of its kind enhances pleasure while improving cardiac health. We also touch on the broader implications for both men's and women's health, emphasizing the critical need for better tools and more research in an industry that often favors reactive treatments over preventive health. Other topics include how sexual health is inextricably linked to relationship satisfaction and overall well-being. Dr. Justin also discusses an increase in erectile dysfunction among younger men, the potential role of wearable technology in sleep and health assessment, and the benefits of PDE5 inhibitors such as tadalafil (aka Cialis). Throughout the conversation, it's a guarantee that you'll not only learn a few things but also get plenty of laughs along the way. In a recent survey, I read that while most U.S. adults understand self-care as balancing all health aspects, an overwhelming 41% are engulfed in daily responsibilities, making self-care a daunting task. When do people succeed? When they have support. 60% of adults believe having support is critical to prioritizing self-care. We are social beings who thrive with encouragement and companionship on our health journey. Interestingly, the survey highlights exercise, sleep, and mental health as the top areas of self-care. These are crucial yet often overlooked components of a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, more than half of the respondents view self-care days as a temporary solution, emphasizing the importance of cultivating small, daily habits for lasting change. And I'm here to tell you that EVERYTHING can change when you seek others to help you. In 2023, I never planned on going on a health journey. Truthfully, I just got to the place where I was tired of being overweight and exhausted. I knew another diet wasn't going to work. Instead, I turned to my friend Amber Lia and asked her to be my health coach. I was excited because her coaching was free. But the best part is that Amber had been where I was. She's lost 90lbs and has kept it off for five years. I started my health journey at the end of March and lost over 80 pounds. I leaned into the program, and I turned to Amber for help. She didn't judge me. Instead, she gently guided me. With Habits of Health, most of their coaches began as clients, providing empathy and understanding rooted in personal experience. This program isn't just about offering tools. It's about approaching wellness in a way that encompasses mind, body, and spirit. And the coaches guide your way. It's like a cheerleading squad on your wellness journey!  That's a long introduction leading up to today's guest. Soon after I started my health journey, I started coaching others--primarily for accountability. As Amber says, "The system is already developed. Coaching is just caring and sharing." I love that! Then, I met Jamil through Amber. Amber has looked up to Jamil for help and advice for years. When I started as a health coach, I attended trainings led by Jamil. I soon learned that Jamil is both wise and inspiring. After spending time with Jamil, I WANT to do more for myself and others! God has good plans for us, and I want to follow them well. Because I've received so much encouragement, I asked if Jamil could encourage you through this podcast. Jamil is inspiring but also practical. After tuning in, I hope you'll start thinking differently about your dreams and goals. (I know you will!) I also hope you'll see that "self-care" will impact you and allow you to impact others.   Connect with Jamil: https://www.instagram.com/therealjamilfrazier Would you like free health coaching? There are many different aspects and modalities involved in healing. These each have their own form of assessment. For example, acupuncture has been used with success for centuries. James Reston shed light on acupuncture when he went to China and had surgery without aesthesia. In acupuncture , there is what is called the homunculus. This is a representation of the body found in a particular part of the body. For example, there are homunculi in the ear as used in auricular acupuncture, in the hands as used in Korean acupuncture, the scalp as used in Japanese acupuncture. We all have heard of reflexology where different areas are referred to different parts of the body. The eyes appear to have similar connections. Iridology is the study of the iris which is the colored part of the eye. The iris tells the genetics and the health history of the body. Sclerology is the study of the sclera, the white part of the eye. The sclera changes quickly and indicates what is going on in the body presently. Have these methods had success? Are there research studies? How does this work? Why does it work? This podcast highlights information on the iris and the tongue that the listener can use to assess his current state of health.

Dr. Jordon Wade is an assistant professor of soil health and soil fertility at the University of Missouri. Wade is also the director of the Soil Health Assessment Center, which is one of the few places in the US that offers the full gamut of soil health measurements. The USDA and Soil Health Institute have both put together lists of relevant soil health measurements. And these empirical ways of measuring soil health is what this episode explores from aggregate stability to organic matter to microbial biomass and beyond.  “We really want to be able to get that holistic picture from around the state, you know, all of our ag producing regions...You know it gives us a lot more insight into that context specificity than if we were to be referencing a national database or something like that. We just have so much information, so much granularity from those samples that are coming in.” - Dr. Jordon Wade Wade explains the wealth of data the Soil Health Assessment Center is acquiring and how they are enriching it with surveys, trials and collaborations. The results are “truly decision support tools.” Measurements help producers pivot and track their efforts to improve their soil health. Wade shares that one of the measurements he finds most impactful is aggregate stability which “integrates the chemical and physical components” of the soil leading to benefits like less erosion potential.  “We're really at a crossroads here in Missouri in terms of climate and soil types. I always say that farming in Missouri is playing the farming game on hard mode because shallow soils and drought prone weather is tough.” - Dr. Jordon Wade This Week on Soil Sense: Meet Dr. Jordon Wade, an assistant professor of soil health and soil fertility at the University of Missouri as well as the director of the Soil Health Assessment Center Explore the significance and value in the operation of the Soil Health Assessment Center for the state of Missouri
