ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, seems to have a mandate to kill. They've struck again!Welcome to this explosive, fact-finding episode of Light ‘Em Up.On Tuesday July 7th in the early morning hours, 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo took his coffee and food his wife had prepared for him, said goodbye to his wife and their dog, and left the house he built. He drove his white van, picked up three co-workers, and headed towards a construction site to work on some houses. But Salgado never made it to work.During a “targeted enforcement operation”, ICE officers shot and killed Salgado and arrested the three other men.ICE says Lorenzo Salgado Araujo tried to ram agents with a van before one shot him dead. Almost immediately, questions emerged over how the encounter had escalated. In initial statements, homeland security officials said that Mr. Salgado Araujo had tried to use his vehicle as a weapon.History and the evidence have shown that ICE has a long track record of lying. They lied about Renee Good and they lied about Alex Pretti as well. Pam Bondi immediately held a national press conference to spin farcical stories to help cover the Trump administration's asses. Claiming that agents shot Renee Good because she “refused commands to exit her vehicle” and “attempted to run over an officer with her car” — weaponizing her vehicle.Through their legal representation, the three witnesses who were in the vehicle with Mr. Araujo (all Mexican nationals) dispute the account by ICE of the fatal shooting. A lawyer for these men (a Mr. Hugo Balderas-Ibarra) said that account of ICE was untrue.Salgado's death marks the 10th of 11 fatal shootings by federal immigration officials nationwide since the second Trump administration took office, a review of public reports by Light ‘Em Up shows — as the Trump administration continues with its anti-immigrant crackdown. For 35 years, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was undocumented and chasing the American Dream. He hoped to obtain legal status, his family said. Those dreams ended when he was gunned down in the streets — something you wouldn't even do to a rabid dog — gunned down last week by an immigration agent who was looking for a different man. This comes on the heels of learning that there will be no charges for the federal officers who killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti. In this incendiary episode we'll investigate in-depth:— Can you sue an ICE agent who has gone rogue?— Will there be any accountability in this case?— Will the government try to protect their story and deport the witnesses before they have an opportunity to tell their full stories in a court of law?— With the Trump administration, does ICE have a mandate to kill? The deadly confrontation has set off protests in Houston, prompted investigations by local and federal officials, and renewed national focus on President Trump's mass deportation campaign. An independent inquiry has been called for in this specific case. Will one be granted? If yes, what might be the outcome? Only time will tell.Trust isn't something that this administration has built up regarding any topic — especially as it relates to ICE enforcement and matters of immigration.— Can the federal government ever be trusted under this administration to tell the truth? We speak the truth, protect the vulnerable and always pursue justice.Tune in for all the explosive details and our sponsors Newsly & Feedspot! We want to hear from you!Support the show

Houston-based poet Lupe Mendez joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and Jennifer Maritza McCauley to discuss ICE raids, the killing of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and the political climate in Texas heading into the midterms. Mendez details the last few minutes of Araujo's life and talks about the government's altered story of Araujo's death. Mendez also explains why he decided to write about the Mexican community's boycott of racist integration practices in Houston during the 1970s and his compulsion to write poetry in Spanish and English. Inspired by Ebony Stewart, Mendez talks about how his “artivism” intersected with his role as Texas Poet Laureate. Mendez reads from We Exist in the Whisper: Huelga School Verses and Prayer Holding Night: New & Selected Works. To hear the full episode, subscribe through iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app (include the forward slashes when searching).

I conclude this season with the last project Sebastiáo Salgado dedicated 8 years of his life to create: GENESIS, a mature volume which offers a 360 degree view of the last places of the world that remain wild as well as some of their inhabitants. He travelled to remote locations and divided his opus into Planet South, Sanctuaries, Africa, Northern Spaces and finally, he explored his beloved Amazon and Pantanal in his native Brazil. His narrative is full of detail, just as arresting as his images, and I invite you to join our adventure. Genesis has been recognized as Salgado's most personal and optimistic work. Along with the documentary that celebrated his life, I dare ask: Are we the salt of the Earth?

Sebastiáo Salgado's GOLD is a book about obsession: "What is it about a dull yellow metal that drives men to abandon their homes, sell their belongings, and cross a continent in order to risk life, limb and sanity for a dream?" Serra Pelada-Bald Mountain, in Brazil's Pará State, was an open-air mine for 10 years, but the relevance of this collection is timeless. GOLD is a major document of modern history and an extraordinary photographic portfolio. Its publication also marked a period of international recognition for Salgado, and offered black and white photography, a renaissance of sorts. This story is also a parable which can offer us a timeless mirror image through which to analyze humanity's fast profit and maximum effort formulas of exploitation. El Dorado definitely seems to be a legend that humanity refuses to outgrow; and the price of such schemes just keeps becoming steeper.
Lawfare Senior Editor Kate Klonick speaks with former Deputy Solicitor General Michael Dreeben; lecturer in law at Stanford, Richard Salgado; and attorney Adam Unikowsky, to discuss the geofencing Fourth Amendment case that was heard Monday, April 27 in the Supreme Court, Chatrie v. United States. They discuss the background of the case with their unique perspectives, starting with Unikowsky's framing of the case for his client, Chatrie, and his thoughts on the arguments he made in his defense when he argued the case before the Court on Monday. Salgado, who worked for Google for years answering such warrants and co-authored the technologist amicus brief, discusses how the Court seemed to be handling the sophistication of the technology issues. Dreeben, who argued Carpenter, the Fourth Amendment technology case seen as the precursor to Chatrie, frames up the stakes of the Fourth Amendment issues. They debate the values of various technology metaphors, the long term future of the third party doctrine, and what the Justices seem most concerned with coming out of the arguments on Monday.
Escuchar audio
I share ideas fromThe Other Americas, another powerful book by Sebastiáo Salgado. From that departure point, I explore the current realities directly related to this deep exploration of the lives of those we call Others.. After reminiscing about New Orleans, a city I love which welcomed us as an inclusive village, I follow the words of a book titled If the World were a Village, which offers clues to recover compassion and respect for the interconnected realities we share on our planetary home; a world-minded approach to life.
This episode features one of Valle De Bravo's most loved and successful pilots, Estefano Salgado. Estefano is a world-class trained chef who supported the Fra 4 team of Tanguy Renoud-Goud in the 2025 Red Bull X-Alps, is one of (maybe the only?) North American pilots to win a World Cup in recent history, is an elite instructor/guide for ParaglidingGuides.com and is a wicked story-teller! In this episode Estefano discusses his experiences in competitive paragliding, putting control theory into use, team management, and the importance of training and mentorship in the sport.
