On Wednesday, January 6th, we saw President Trump call forth and unleash fascist mobs to storm the U.S. Capitol. This was an attempt at a coup. It did not succeed this time, but the danger from even a failed coup is to be taken seriously, setting the stage for them to come back sooner or later to re-seize power – with or without Trump. RefuseFascism.org hosted a virtual press conference on YouTube, Thursday January 7, presenting a diverse group of people speaking out on the attempted coup, its short and longer term consequences, and what THE PEOPLE must do now. The press conference also announced protests demanding No to a Fascist Coup!

On Tuesday, July 7, Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby shared the wonderful story of their upcoming book, “We Refuse to be Enemies”, about how the paths of a Muslim woman and a Jewish man crossed and led to a joint endeavor for a meaningful purpose. Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby, a Muslim-American woman of Pakistani origin and a Jewish-American man who spent his formative years in Israel, will share their story of how they connected and embarked on a mission to bring their respective communities together in their common homeland, America. Growing up in Pakistan, Sabeeha never met a Jew, her view colored by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In his youth, Walter never met a Muslim, his opinion shaped by Leon Uris's Exodus. What changed their perceptions? How did they fare in nurturing Muslim-Jewish communication and cooperation? Sabeeha and Walter will share their experiences of facing pushback from their communities, overcoming obstacles and bringing together Muslims and Jews to explore unexpected commonalities between their faiths; to work together to help people in need and stand together against bigotry. Finally, they will offer their vision for reconciliation. Sabeeha and Walter have co-authored a book, We Refuse to be Enemies. How Muslims and Jews can make Peace, One Friendship at a Time, due for publication in Spring 2021. It is their hope that this book will inspire people of all faiths and ethnicities to reach out to each other and heal our nation. Speakers of the Event SABEEHA REHMAN is the author of the 2016 memoir, “Threading My Prayer Rug. One Woman’s Journey from Pakistani Muslim to American Muslim,”  Short-Listed for the 2018 William Saroyan International Prize for Writing, the book also received several other nominations and awards. She is also an op-ed contributor to the Wall Street Journal and New York Daily News. In the early 1980s, concerned about raising her sons as Muslims in the absence of a Muslim community, she set to work, and her commitment culminated in the building of a mosque on Staten Island where her family lived. Sabeeha, who holds a Masters in Healthcare Administration, served as a hospital executive for 25 years.  Thereafter, responding to her grandson’s autism diagnosis, she co-founded the NY Chapter of the National Autism Association and served as its President from 2008-11. As a public speaker, she has spent several decades engaging in interfaith dialogue and now serves as a board member of the Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Committee as well as the NY Chapter of the National Autism Association. She blogs on topics related to American Muslim experience at www.sabeeharehman.com/blog. She lives in New York City with her husband Khalid, a retired Hematologist/Oncologist. WALTER RUBY is a veteran activist in Muslim-Jewish relations. From 2008-2017, in the position of Muslim-Jewish Relations Director at the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, he organized hundreds of twinning events; bringing together thousands of Jews and Muslims in over 30 countries on five continents, including members of mosques and synagogues and Muslim and Jewish organizations. Ruby presently serves as executive director of Jews, Muslims and Allies Acting Together (JAMAAT), a grassroots community of Muslim, Jewish and Interfaith activists in Greater Washington; and as Coordinator of the Washington Area Chapter of Project Rozana, which works to strengthen ties between Israelis and Palestinians through health care. Ruby is currently co-authoring a book with Muslim-American author Sabeeha Rehman entitled We Refuse To Be Enemies: How Muslims and Jews Can Make Peace, One Friendship at a Time. Ruby has worked as a reporter and commentator for more than 40 years, mainly for American Jewish and Israeli publications. His articles and op-eds have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, USA Today and other media. Walter lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife Tatayna.

Abusing Power: Taking Predatory Daniel Pinchbeck At His Word

Author Daniel Pinchbeck sexually harassed and coerced interns, community members, and those less-powerful than himself, harming untold numbers of women in the psychedelic community. He has described himself as being “sexually fixated, creepy, predatory," using psychedelics as “tools of seduction,” “making unwanted advances” towards much younger women, and “seeking sexual contact with volunteers in an organization” that he helped start. Despite this, some individuals and organizations are fixated on defending and rehabilitating Pinchbeck’s image rather than meaningfully addressing systemic issues of sexual misconduct and misogyny in the community; promoting a perpetrator while ignoring the victims and survivors. The Chacruna Institute has dismissed Pinchbeck’s critics - in interviews and in statements - as angry, mentally unstable, seeking to ostracize him from community events, and unwilling to give him a second chance. Over the explicit protests of his organizing team, Paul Austin of The Third Wave asserted the importance of Pinchbeck’s participation in community events. In response, the majority of Third Wave staff quit. Pinchbeck has made it exhaustingly clear in his own words that as soon as he gained a modicum of power and status, he used it to exploit women. Why are some members of the psychedelic community so insistent that he get it back?   Read more: We Refuse to Endorse Daniel Pinchbeck as a Credible Voice in the Psychedelic Movement  Support the show for $5 a month on Patreon. Outside the town is a sign.“Population: a million people that don’t drink alcohol.”I’ve ripped the thorn from the rose, stuck it on the bridge of my nose, and I'm dragging my feet in the dirt, snorting.Wave the red flag.I dare you.I double fucking dare you. That’s where I’m going, and nothing’s going to stop me. I locked the GPS coordinates in back in 2009 when I took the vow. Then she left me.I felt like the rind stuck in a world of sweet marmalade. Who would want to taste me, now?One day, as the man beside me, went searching for the smell under his fingernails with a knife, and the woman in stockings gyrated in front of me to the beat of the thin white duke, I asked for a Sambuca. And another. And another.A month went by.Lost.Confused.Unsure.Values and virtues scattered to the wind like dandelion seeds held in the magnificently manicured mitten of the monster. Moon.Mars.Nowhere was far enough for me.Then, my son pushed the bottle aside, reached into my heart, and switched my GPS back on. A light flickered.I heard the voice in my head tell me to turn right. Then, in the distance, I saw the sign.“Population: a million people that don’t drink alcohol.”I put my foot down, and I’ve been kicking up a fuss ever since.Once you take the vow, it’s not a question of IF you’ll become someone that doesn’t drink alcohol, it’s WHEN, and that’s what we talk about in today’s episode. Here is the first of a series of interviews I did with poker players during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) in the Bahamas in the mid-January. The content has a poker flavour to it, but I try to keep my interview questions more related to life, and each one that I post contains some element of wisdom that we can learn from, and apply to our journey in becoming someone that doesn’t drink alcohol.Maria Konnikova is a writer, psychologist, and poker player from New York. Maria's two books: The Confidence Game and Mastermind: How to Think Like Sherlock Holmes are New York Times bestsellers. I met her last year in the Bahamas after she’d convinced the poker legend, Erik Seidel, to teach her to be a poker player for her new book The Biggest Bluff, and went on to win a quarter of a million dollars under Erik’s tutelage. In this discussion, we talk about inauthenticity, status, and feeling awkward in social situations, before finishing with a little game I like to call Projection. Our distinctive blend marries the crisp, honeyed citrus fruit of Chenin Blanc with the plush body, soft floral and juicy peach notes of Viognier for a lush, versatile and delicious wine. What does that even mean? Here’s another one.Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon is a jammy wine with robust flavours of wild berries and currants. Hints of toasted oak and clove enhance the velvety smooth finish. It sounds like something I would use to paint the walls or wash my hair. I grew up on a council estate in Reddish Stockport called Poets Corner and then moved to a working-class mining community called Ogmore Vale. You don’t drink wine in these places. Posh people drink wine. People like us do things like this. There is a story in the fabulous book Mindful Eating by Brian Wansink, where a WWII cook on board a naval vessel told the crew he was going to pick up some strawberry jello the next time they were in port because they were fed up with eating lemon jello. Upon arrival at the harbour there was no strawberry jello, so the chef adding red food colouring to the lemon jello and placed it on the menu as strawberry jello. The sailors thanked him for picking up the strawberry jello. There are many reasons we eat and drink the things we do, and ‘taste’ is a minimal part of the equation. In the same Wansink classic, he demonstrated if you gave cheap wine, an expensive label, and placed it on a fancy looking menu, in an expensive restaurant, people would rate the quality higher than expensive wine, with a cheap label, on an affordable menu, in a dive of a restaurant.Drinking wine is a status gig, and marketers of wine know this. The rituals of swilling and spitting, the wine rack at home, the hobby of collecting expensive bottles, the trips to Napa Valley - it’s all geared up to say one thing to your friends - I am a person who knows my wine, and that means I am a sophisticated human being (more sophisticated than you). But it’s difficult for the wine industry to impregnate the working class structure. The only wine we drink is three bottles for a tenner down the off because of the price. Step forward and take a bow the real ale and gin industries. These geniuses have tapped into the smarts of the wine industry to create two ranges of products that the working class can act all cool and hard while drinking. The same rules apply.People like us do things like this. The same illusion exists. It’s all a lie.We don’t drink alcohol because we like the taste of real ale or one of a thousand flavoured gins that light up the bar like an acid trip, and that’s the topic of today’s podcast. ... So Develop a Sense of Urgency And Stop Drinking Alcohol NowIn the BBC documentary, Drinkers Like Me, the British TV and radio presenter, Adrian Chiles, discovers that his consumption of alcohol is physically damaging his liver after undergoing a scan. If you watch the documentary, you will see that Chiles is wracked with cognitive dissonance over his decision to continually drink more than the government health guidelines. Did the trip to the doctors help him stop drinking? No. He still drinks, today. I remember the first time I told my son that one day he would die. To say it was a lot to take in is an understatement. I believe from that moment his subconscious buried any thought of death, because, emotionally, it’s too painful. We become immortal. I will spend most of the day sitting on my arse, writing. Last night, I slept less than six hours. I have not come out of the house prepared, so I may eat something that’s not optimal for my health. I skipped my meditation so I could get to work quicker. All of these choices are negative towards my health, and accumulatively they become a problem over time, but it’s not enough to change my behaviour. If a doctor told me tomorrow that I would die if I didn’t run two miles a day for the rest of my life, then two miles I would run. Jen Sincero says a sense of urgency is important, and when someone tells you that you’re going to die, then that’s urgency. But why are we waiting? We know we are going to die.Why isn’t that sense of urgency here now? That’s the topic of today’s podcast discussion. The Truth About AlcoholWe Are Not Alcoholics, and We Refuse to Be Anonymous Join Us & Our CommunityTTAA Taster: http://www.thetruthaboutalcohol.co.uk/p/TTAA%20TasterTTAA Intensive: https://www.thetruthaboutalcohol.co.uk/p/TTAAIntensiveStrive Community: https://strive.thetruthaboutalcohol.co.uk/

Tazo’s Awake - English Breakfast - A breakfast-style black tea of malty boldness & bright flavour, invigorating any time of day.I choose the tea, not because I believe the narrative of the malty boldness and bright flavour, and I know it’s not going to invigorate me, but I choose it because people like us do things like this.People who grew up on a council estate in Reddish, Stockport in the 1970s/80s drank tea. It began as a yearning. As a child, you weren't trusted to drink tea because it was too hot. When you were, you felt terrific. You filled the cup with plenty of milk, emptied two, maybe three sugars into the cup, and voila. How to Not Drink Alcohol And Not Feel Isolated When Out in The Places You Like

“You’re a hack.”It hurt. Not a stabbing knife in the guts hurt; more the gradual suffering of being placed on a baking tray and put into the oven type of pain. I don’t like it when someone doesn’t like me. I want to be loved by everyone. I don’t want them to know that I watched Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on my second-hand black and white TV.I don’t want them to know that I used to eat jelly cubes as a dessert.I don’t want to be vanilla.I want to be mint chocolate chip. I want the whole world to make me feel like I have ice cubes running down my spine. I am gravy - get your bread and mop me up. I am Wedgewood - lick me until I am clean. "How do I quit alcohol but not feel isolated from going out to the places I like and hanging out with the people I love?"That’s what I talk about in today’s episode. The Truth About AlcoholWe Are Not Alcoholics, and We Refuse to Be AnonymousJoin Us & Our Communitywww.thetruthaboutalcohol.co.ukhttps://strive.thetruthaboutalcohol.co.uk

In December, I received the following email from Nathan Simpson.Lee,I just wanted to drop you and email to say thank you for all you do. I found your podcast a little under a year ago when I decided I had to stop drinking alcohol. I had my last drink on the 27th December 2017. I have listened to you religiously ever since. Over the past year my life and health has transformed and it was all a result of me finding you and then finding the Allen Carr Book. The photo attached is me in Amsterdam in November 2017 and of me just this week.Your no nonsense, straight to the point approach really resonates with me. I tell people about your podcast as much as I can. Keep doing what you are doing, I am eternally grateful. The photo that he saved me was remarkable. The transformation, incredible. I asked him to come on the show, and he agreed. It was a poignant moment because the podcast took place on the date of his 365th day without alcohol.Nathan is 34 years old, married with two young children (a boy aged 2 years and a girl aged 10 months). He was born and grew up in Carlisle, Cumbria, UK. Nathan left Carlisle aged 17 to join the Army where he spent the next 14 years living in the South of England. After leaving the Army in 2016 Nathan moved back to Carlisle where he now works as a Field Service Engineer.Nathan's hobbies are running ultra-marathons, hiking, fitness and spending time with my family in the outdoors.Enjoy.The Truth About AlcoholWe Are Not Alcoholics, and We Refuse to Be AnonymousFebruary TasterIf you want to learn how to relax in social situations without drinking alcohol, then you need the February Taster. My daughter needs a smoothie. My wife asks me to get it. 40-minutes there, and 40-minutes back. Selfie-stick in my hand. A defenceless mobile phone, my fifth limb, shivering without its armour. “I can’t...”Excuses fly from my mouth like moths from horror movie corpses. Me.Mine.Ego.First.Winner.I sat on the bench once. I was nine-years-old; in bits. The coach didn’t pick me. I wasn’t good enough. I needed someone to pick the bits up, stick them in an envelope and post them to me, so I glue them back together again in the safety of my personal, private hell.I don’t want to be this person.Nine doesn’t go into 43.It’s an imperfect fit.Should I accept who I am, quirks and all? Pick up the broom and sweep the imperfections underneath the mouse mat? Hope that nobody steals my tunes and plays them on the radio?I want one of those jackets that the cub scouts wear with pride.Decorate me like a Christmas tree. The only thing I can accept is I need to change.I need a personality transplant. I said it once, and I am about to say it again. The Truth About AlcoholWe Are Not Alcoholics, and We Refuse to Be AnonymousFebruary TasterIf you want to learn how to relax in social situations without drinking alcohol, then you need the February Taster.
