After THE MATRIX and V FOR VENDETTA, the Wachowskis were ready to turn from darkness, into the bright, bright candy-colored light. The result was SPEED RACER, an eyepopping postmodern explosion that honored the gravity-defying spirit of old-school anime… and which audiences couldn't quite figure out.Host Rico Gagliano talks with the SPEED RACER star Roger Allam (THE THICK OF IT), legendary special effects artist John Gaeta (THE MATRIX), and more about how the movie was made, why it tanked, and why a growing army of acolytes start their days by watching its final action sequence. The latest season of The MUBI Podcast – BOX OFFICE POISON — dives into six visionary films... that were also notorious flops. This week, we don't step behind the mic to be an audio driver... we do it because we're driven, as we go under the hood with the Wachowski sisters' much-maligned avant garde anticapitalist art film (for kids!), the 2008 anime adaptation Speed Racer, written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and starring Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Roger Allam, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benno Fürmann and Richard Roundtree. Turned loose on kid-friendly fare after R-rated successes, the Wachowskis served up a visionary piece of art about what it means to be an artist, and the struggle to create under capitalism. A box office flop upon its release, it's gained a cult following in the years since, and count Justin as a Day 1 believer as he saw it twice in IMAX and all of its technicolor splendor has likely been imprinted on his eyelids ever since. It's a contentious pick to close out Masterpiece Month, a nomination for canon consideration so audacious that it just may test the limits of the very friendship undergirding this podcast. But fret not! Beyond hearing a nerdy boy yap about his nerdy interest for an impossibly long time, we also mark the midway point of the year by revealing our Top 5 films of 2024 thus far. If you'd like to watch Speed Racer before listening to this episode, it is sadly unavailable to stream in both the US and Canada at the time of publication. But you should see it. It's great. (Can you guess which one of us writes this stuff?) Other works discussed in this episode include Twisters, Civil War, Hit Man, Late Night with the Devil, Longlegs, Devil, Love Lies Bleeding, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Speed, Midnight Run, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Lisa Frankenstein, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest, The Matrix, V For Vendetta, Pacific Rim, Cars, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Yellowjackets, Nope, Alita: Battle Angel, and Gran Turismo, among countless others. We'll be back next week to kick off another themeless month of madness on the show, as we're following Masterpiece Month by purposefully steering the ship directly into an iceberg and watching the movie that killed Hayden Christensen's leading man career. Yes, it's another box office dud from the summer of 2008: Doug Liman's Jumper, which sadly just like Speed Racer is not currently available to stream. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
On this show, our specialty is sequels, sequels, and more sequels. From the good ones, to the bad ones, to the really ugly ones, we'll be covering them all! We've got homicidal maniacs that won't stay in the grave, sci-fi epics whose stories cannot be told in a single tale, and much much more. For our 27th episode, we'll be taking on one of the biggest blockbuster sequels in movie history with "MATRIX RELOADED" from 2003, from directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski. This science fiction action epic to the original Matrix once again stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. It's an epic sequel filled with incomparabale fight scenes, ground breaking cgi, and an EPIC car chase sequence. This time around The One (Neo) and company must continue the good fight against our machine and computer overlords. Join our hosts Cameron Scott and first time guest co-host Roman Jossart as they dissect and take a deep dive into a world of martial arts, car chases, shoot-outs and something referred to by the films cast and crew as 'The Burly Brawl'. Enjoy!

Teaming up a sought-after writer & acclaimed director on a film should mean a box office smash. But the extravagant wildcard that is SHOWGIRLS was ridiculed the moment it hit theaters. Warner Bros. has officially announced the development of a fifth movie in the iconic Matrix franchise, set to be written and directed by Drew Goddard, the acclaimed talent behind The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods. This new chapter marks a significant departure from tradition, as it will be the first Matrix film not directed by Lana or Lilly Wachowski. However, Lana Wachowski will play a vital role in the project as an executive producer, bridging the past with the future of the Matrix universe. While specific details about the plot and whether key cast members such as Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return remain under wraps, the announcement has already sparked considerable excitement among fans and industry insiders alike. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production, Jesse Ehrman, expressed enthusiasm for Goddard's vision, highlighting the writer-director's profound admiration for the original series and his fresh perspective on its beloved world and characters. Drew Goddard's career is distinguished by his innovative storytelling and versatile writing across television and film, including notable works like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, and Daredevil, as well as his Oscar-nominated screenplay for The Martian. Goddard's dedication to the Matrix universe and his reverence for the Wachowskis' groundbreaking work promise a new chapter that respects the franchise's legacy while pushing its boundaries. The Matrix, since its debut in 1999, has been a cornerstone of modern cinema, introducing audiences to a dystopian reality where humanity is trapped in a simulated world. Its profound impact on both visual effects and narrative depth has earned the franchise over $1.8 billion at the global box office. However, the fourth installment, The Matrix Resurrections, faced challenges amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, underperforming in terms of box office revenue despite its ambitious vision.
Jupiter Ascending was a movie sci-fi fans were really looking forward to. It would mark the long-awaited return of the Wachowskis to the sci-fi action genre, something they left behind when Speed Racer flopped theatrically. This promised to be a large-scale fantasy epic that fans hoped would be the new Matrix. Alas, things didn't work out that way, with critics savaging the film when it came out and audiences staying away in droves. Complaints included a muddled sci-fi universe, a bizarre choice to make Channing Tatum's hero part dog, and the fact that newly minted Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne's acting was so over the top that people thought he should have his award taken back. A charming performance by Mile Kunis as the heroine and a solid score by Michael Giacchino was not enough to save this turkey. It would mark the Wachowskis' swan song as a team, with Lilly Wachowski stepping away from directing. Lana would rebound with the decisive sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, which would also prove to be a financial flop.So WTF Happened to Jupiter Ascending? Let's unpack this well-intended and fun (in a camp way) sci-fi fantasy in an episode edited by Diane Baldwin, written by Daniel Woburn, and narrated by Mathew Plale.

If you enjoy this episode or any of the episodes still to come across this weekend, please do consider donating via the link below: Donate to our fundraiser here!On today's episode – a conversation about writing with the incredible Lilly Wachowski. Or at least, we were meant to speak about writing. The plan was to talk about Lilly's creative practice. About the queer-coded stories of collective resistance and love in the face of dystopia that she's told across a glittering three-decade career. One of those stories in particular – The Matrix trilogy, co-written and directed with her sister Lana Wachowski – was the looking glass through which Al stepped into a new way of seeing both cinema and the world when he was eleven-years-old, so you can imagine his excitement to discuss her relationship with the page. That is not what went down. Yes, there's plenty in our conversation about how Lilly approaches writing. About why she prioritises telling stories not about individualist heroes, but about communities coming together to defy power. About how writing film and TV right now a release valve for the filmmaker, helping her channel her “trans rage” at a system that tramples over marginalised groups. You'll also hear her discuss why she believes great stories can offer an escape path for audiences out of that system. But that's not all we talked about. Across a hugely moving two-hours, Lilly explains how, when she looks back on her and Lana's early movies today, she sees clearly the “scratchings on the wall as they were clawing their way out the closet.” She speaks beautifully about her experience transitioning and about how she found her way back to herself after a period of burnout and about the amazing women around her growing up that she credits with shaping her. Listen out for candid discussion about the “impossible bar” that The Matrix set for her and Lana, and Lilly's thoughts on A.I in 2023, as someone who co-created one of our culture's defining works about that technology. You'll also hear about the joy of her experience on Work In Progress, and why the next chapter of her career is going to be all about “throwing my trans body against the mono culture that Hollywood is gravitating towards.” It was a huge privilege to share this conversation with Lilly who we can't thank enough for her openness and insights. Again, this conversation is in aid of the Entertainment Community Fund, who do extraordinary work lifting up storytellers of all descriptions and have been a vital support for entertainment industry workers affected by this summer's strikes. As we celebrate Pride month, Rivka and Frank are joined by actor, director, and educator Wren Mack for a deep-dive conversation about Lana and Lilly Wachowski's sci-fi masterpiece The Matrix, which has become a meaningful film for the LGBTQ community since its release in 1999. They discuss how The Matrix has been misappropriated by online right-wingers who believe they've been “red-pilled,” while completely misunderstanding the film's central metaphor. They also unpack how the Wachowskis unintentionally created a transgender allegory in “Thomas Anderson versus Neo,” and talk about how the movie remains one of the most sexy and sweaty action films of all time.

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for their latest movie retrospective. This time they're talking about 10th anniversary of Cloud Atlas. Cloud Atlas is a science fiction film directed by Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, and Lilly Wachowski. The movie is based on the novel by David Mitchell. It opened in theaters on October 26, 2012. The film charts the journey of reincarnated souls throughout time. Locations include 1970s San Francisco, present day London, and Seoul in the far future. The ensemble cast features Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Bae Doona, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, and Hugo Weaving. The film polarized critics and audiences. Roger Ebert gave the film 4 out of 4 stars, while Village Voice named it the worst film of 2012. Financed through independent sources, the film was not a box office success, only making $130 million on an approximately $100 million budget. Josh and Aaron discuss the movie's ambition, the different storylines, and how it compares to the Wachowskis' other films. For another podcast, you can listen to Aaron and Josh talk about Spirited Away. Cloud Atlas is available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture It cannot be overstated just how groundbreaking Lana and Lilly Wachowski's 1999 sci-fi action masterpiece "The Matrix" was at the time of its release and how influential it has been in the years since. Its popularity has spurred multiple sequels (including a new one next week), spin-offs, and imitators across the film industry who tried to replicate the lightning in a bottle the sisters caught. Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano in iconic roles, the film either turned them into household names or cemented their reputations. Twenty-two years later, we decided to go back to the Matrix and discuss the first film's themes, action scenes, characters, visual effects (including the legendary use of "bullet-time"), its awards run, and more!
