Cornell's Brian Wansink was at the top of his field, renowned for translating behavioral science into practical tips for improving eating habits. He famously popularized the notion that we tend to eat more when served in large bowls. But, when skeptical researchers and journalists exposed Wansink for manipulating data, his fall from grace led to the dismantling of Cornell's entire food psychology department, and raised questions about the state of scientific research as a whole. During the early 2000s Brian Wansink made his mark as a “food psychologist” with quirky studies backed by the USDA and Cornell. His research led to the 100-calorie snack pack, the side plate for dinner, and the idea that Elmo stickers led kids to eat healthier. But one tone-deaf blog post led a pack of scientists to dig into Brian's data. What they found was a hunt for bite-size takeaways, a lack of ethical rigor… and a whole lotta junk science.Be the first to know about Wondery's newest podcasts, curated recommendations, and more! Brian Wansink was the Head of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University. While there, he did exciting research that suggested eating healthier and encouraging others to eat healthier was as simple as providing subtle hints and nudges towards the preferred behavior. He's perhaps most famous for the claim that if you take a larger plate to the buffet, you'll eat more than if you were to take a small plate. For a long time he was easily the world's most prominent voice on food psychology. He published bestselling books. He was constantly interviewed by national media. He even had major influence in the government. He served for two years as the Director of the US Department of Agriculture's Center for Nutrition Policy. It's fair to say that Brian Wasnick affected how millions of people prepared, presented, and ate food. However, his reputation came crashing down from 2016 through 2018. It was discovered, partly through an accidental confession by Brian Wansink himself, that his papers were frequently based on shaky and perhaps outright fraudulent data analysis. The scandal was so bad that Cornell determined that Wansink had committed scientific misconduct and removed him from all teaching and research positions. This is a story about what happens when someone treats science like a business with the goal of gaining the most influence and media coverage, rather than a project of gaining an empirical understanding of the real world. Experts say cooking meals from scratch can help you think about the ingredients which go into your food. Tam Fry, from the UK's National Obesity Forum, says: "Learning how to cook fresh food is really the number one thing to consider when tackling obesity and improving weight loss." If you can't cook, Fry recommends that you be more aware of what you put in your trolley when you go to the supermarket. He points out: "People don't read food labels. 他指出:“人们不看食品标签。At government level making the labels easier to read and understand is key, but just looking at how many grams of sugar is in something is really important." Some experts believe that a good way to reduce your waistline might be to start by reducing the size of the plate you eat from. Research has suggested that people eat most of what they serve themselves, so big portions lead to overeating. A study by Dr Brian Wansink, from Cornell University, US, claimed that reducing plate size from about 30cm to 25cm typically results in 22% fewer calories being served, as the smaller plate makes a normal serving seem more filling. However, once plate size went below about 24cm, "people begin to realise they're tricking themselves and go back for seconds and thirds". I think I'll keep my current plates for now. As for me, nothing beats an inspiring image on the fridge door – a picture of my lovely jeans – with some wise quote as a caption. As supermodel Kate Moss once said: "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is The Blue-Minimizing Robot, Part 4: Time and Effort Discounting, published by Scott Alexander. Related to: Akrasia, hyperbolic discounting, and picoeconomics If you're tired of studies where you inevitably get deceived, electric shocked, or tricked into developing a sexual attraction to penny jars, you might want to sign up for Brian Wansink's next experiment. He provided secretaries with a month of unlimited free candy at their workplace. The only catch was that half of them got the candy in a bowl on their desk, and half got it in a bowl six feet away. The deskers ate five candies/day more than the six-footers, which the scientists calculated would correspond to a weight gain of over 10 pounds more per year1. Beware trivial inconveniences (or, in this case, if you don't want to gain weight, beware the lack of them!) Small modifications to the difficulty of obtaining a reward can make big differences in whether the corresponding behavior gets executed. TIME DISCOUNTING The best studied example of this is time discounting. When offered two choices, where A will lead to a small reward now and B will lead to a big reward later, people will sometimes choose smaller-sooner rather than larger-later depending on the length of the delay and the size of the difference. For example, in one study, people preferred $250 today to $300 in a year; it took a promise of at least $350 to convince them to wait. Time discounting was later found to be "hyperbolic", meaning that the discount amount between two fixed points decreases the further you move those two points into the future. For example, you might prefer $80 today to $100 one week from now, but it's unlikely you would prefer $80 in one hundred weeks to $100 in one hundred one weeks. Yet this is offering essentially the same choice: wait an extra week for an extra $20. So it's not enough to say that the discount rate is a constant 20% per week - the discount rate changes depending on what interval of time we're talking about. If you graph experimentally obtained human discount rates on a curve, they form a hyperbola. Hyperbolic discounting creates the unpleasant experience of "preference reversals", in which people can suddenly change their mind on a preference as they move along the hyperbola. For example, if I ask you today whether you would prefer $250 in 2019 or $300 in 2020 (a choice between small reward in 8 years or large reward in 9), you might say the $300 in 2020; if I ask you in 2019 (when it's a choice between small reward now and large reward in 1 year), you might say no, give me the $250 now. In summary, people prefer larger-later rewards most of the time EXCEPT for a brief period right before they can get the smaller-sooner reward. George Ainslie ties this to akrasia and addiction: call the enjoyment of a cigarette in five minutes the smaller-sooner reward, and the enjoyment of not having cancer in thirty years the larger-later reward. You'll prefer to abstain right up until the point where there's a cigarette in front of you and you think "I should smoke this", at which point you will do so. Discounting can happen on any scale from seconds to decades, and it has previously been mentioned that the second or sub-second level may have disproportionate effects on our actions. Eliezer concentrated on the difficult of changing tasks, but I would add that any task which allows continuous delivery of small amounts of reinforcement with near zero delay can become incredibly addictive even if it isn't all that fun (this is why I usually read all the way through online joke lists, or stay on Reddit for hours). Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is also why the XKCD solution to internet addiction - an extension that makes you wait 30 seconds before loading addictive sites - is so useful. EFFORT DISCOUNTING Effort discounting is time discounting's lesser-...

This week I'm talking to Philly-area dietitian Heather Rudalavage. She takes a weight-neutral and health-at-every-size approach with her clients to help them achieve their health goals with compassion, empathy and a dash of humor! We are talking about how diets don't work, how to manage stress eating during COVID-19, and how our default reaction to health problems is going on a diet and trying to lose weight. Our conversation includes:  Heather's life growing up and not ever thinking about diets or weight loss.  She became a dietitian and felt like she was "doing something wrong" because she wasn’t fixated on weight loss and food rules like the rest of the world.  Her first moments questioning her body came around the time of her three pregnancies and becoming a mom.  Once she was a mom and questioning her body for the first time ever, her diet attempts never lasted longer than 24 hours.  She started a private practice called Intuitive Nutrition before she knew anything about intuitive eating and the Intuitive Eating book by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch.  How she works in a doctor’s office and hears about various health concerns where people automatically default to weight loss as the “cure”. The importance of reflecting on a patient’s history with weight loss and if it hasn’t improved specific health parameters in the past, this is a sign that weight loss is not the answer.  The dangers of starving your body coupled with jumping into intense exercise. The trouble with having orthorexic thinking and cutting out foods in an effort to improve health when the focus could be, “what can I ADD to my diet”. How cutting out foods or intermittent fasting can lead to binges on that food.  Stress and emotional eating during this time of COVID-19 and being on lockdown, businesses closing, homeschooling, dealing with sick family members and loss - and how it wakes up a “sleeping dragon” within us.  When things feel as out of control as they do during this pandemic, some of us are eating for comfort and others are restricting.  Forms of self-care we can seek out during this stressful time. Checking in with yourself and asking “What do I need at this moment?” How we tend to go on autopilot with mindless eating and need to stop and ask “am I hungry” to determine if it’s really food we need or something else.  How we can move our bodies in ways that work for us. It doesn’t have to be a grueling hour-long workout. Heather offers insight and tips to help you along on your intuitive eating journey, even during these sticky, stressful times. Most people know they should eat more vegetables, exercise and sleep at least 7 hours a night but unfortunately, knowledge doesn’t equate to behavior. Research suggests we tend to make daily health decisions based on emotions and in the moment instead of according to logic. We’ll make the choice based on how we feel. Today’s guest is Dr. Michelle Segar, a motivational scientist who has been studying what motivates people to choose and maintain healthy behaviors, particularly around exercise. She believes that motivation isn’t the cause. It’s actually the result. In this interview, we discuss what a motivational scientist actually does, how we can shrink the goals we’re asking people to achieve (at least at the beginning) and reframe exercise from a chore to a gift. Michelle gives her thoughts on external motivators like gift cards and financial incentives. She leaves us with a tangible tip to assess the reasons we give employees to participate….are they based on logic? Links mentioned: Join me at the Wellness Council of Wisconsin in September! She started lifting weights — without a clue what she was doing — but found it magical that she could literally shape her body using resistance training. She woke up 6 months later with serious delts and have never looked back. Always an athlete, in high school she did well in all things track and field, and then in college, she rowed crew for 4 years, in addition to teaching group fitness. Her personality has always been the same, even back then: jump in, and then figure it out on the fly, which is how she taught myself how to teach any fitness class you can think of. She always thought, why not try? She ended up earning her B.S. in Exercise Science from Wake Forest University and went on to get her M.S. in Human Nutrition at the University of Bridgeport. She trained for her very first figure competition when she was 24, just to see if she could do it. And after winning her first show, she was hooked. Addicted to the process, addicted to the high of seeing if she could be better than everyone else, and unfortunately, addicted to seeing my physique in “show shape.” She was signed on as a fitness model during that time and landed 4 national magazine covers. She competed in Fitness Modeling shows and more for 5 years. Until it seriously started to mess with her head. The diets and meal plans she used in the past simply stopped working. Her metabolism stopped being as responsive and she kept falling off the wagon, only to berate herself for poor discipline, laziness and weakness. She felt ashamed that she couldn't stay on the programs she was giving her clients and she felt embarrassed and “fat” when she was in her off-season (even though according to normal standards, she was fit, lean and healthy). Over time, she got so fed up with the mind games and spinning her wheels around dieting, that she threw her hands up and decided she needed to find a new way, a healthier way, a forever way, even if that meant gaining weight. She couldn't keep punishing herself with hours of cardio each day, nor could she keep jumping from failed plan to failed plan. She wanted to stop talking to myself so unkindly. She wanted to find a way to eat forever, she wanted to stop yo-yo'ing up and down 20 lbs each year. It was in 2011, 6 months after starting JillFit.com that she finally had the courage to try a new, more moderate way of doing things. She stopped the incessant food prep and obsession. She quit the relentless meal plan following. She started looking inward and trusting herself more. She started listening to my body more. She stopped following coaches and experts. And she finally had the courage to break the yo-yo cycle. The answer for her was in the gray. No more negative self-talk. No more all-or-nothing eating. No more hard & fast rules. The outcome was not only effective, but completely liberating. And now it is her mission and her passion to teach other women how to break that cycle. To start fully owning their process. To start working on their mind game so that they can create a life they love. This includes all aspects: mindset, physique and even business. Since 2012, JillFit has morphed into a lifestyle company helping women become freer, smarter, happier and more effective. And to her, that's everything.

Our distinctive blend marries the crisp, honeyed citrus fruit of Chenin Blanc with the plush body, soft floral and juicy peach notes of Viognier for a lush, versatile and delicious wine. What does that even mean? Here’s another one.Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon is a jammy wine with robust flavours of wild berries and currants. Hints of toasted oak and clove enhance the velvety smooth finish. It sounds like something I would use to paint the walls or wash my hair. I grew up on a council estate in Reddish Stockport called Poets Corner and then moved to a working-class mining community called Ogmore Vale. You don’t drink wine in these places. Posh people drink wine. People like us do things like this. There is a story in the fabulous book Mindful Eating by Brian Wansink, where a WWII cook on board a naval vessel told the crew he was going to pick up some strawberry jello the next time they were in port because they were fed up with eating lemon jello. Upon arrival at the harbour there was no strawberry jello, so the chef adding red food colouring to the lemon jello and placed it on the menu as strawberry jello. The sailors thanked him for picking up the strawberry jello. There are many reasons we eat and drink the things we do, and ‘taste’ is a minimal part of the equation. In the same Wansink classic, he demonstrated if you gave cheap wine, an expensive label, and placed it on a fancy looking menu, in an expensive restaurant, people would rate the quality higher than expensive wine, with a cheap label, on an affordable menu, in a dive of a restaurant.Drinking wine is a status gig, and marketers of wine know this. The rituals of swilling and spitting, the wine rack at home, the hobby of collecting expensive bottles, the trips to Napa Valley - it’s all geared up to say one thing to your friends - I am a person who knows my wine, and that means I am a sophisticated human being (more sophisticated than you). But it’s difficult for the wine industry to impregnate the working class structure. The only wine we drink is three bottles for a tenner down the off because of the price. Step forward and take a bow the real ale and gin industries. These geniuses have tapped into the smarts of the wine industry to create two ranges of products that the working class can act all cool and hard while drinking. The same rules apply.People like us do things like this. The same illusion exists. It’s all a lie.We don’t drink alcohol because we like the taste of real ale or one of a thousand flavoured gins that light up the bar like an acid trip, and that’s the topic of today’s podcast. Embattled And disgraced nutritional health researcher Dr. Brian Wansink is our interview guest today in Episode 1432 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.” One of the benefits of having the longest-running health podcast on the internet is that it serves as a time capsule of sorts. The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show has seen so many trends come and go, and this collection of more than 1400 interviews allows us to revisit some of the claims and fads that have had a chance to run their course. Today we get to look back at Dr. Brian Wansink's past two appearances on this show and follow up with some new news concerning this media darling's message of portion control over everything else. The Washington Post recently reported: He was given an appointment at the Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion and helped oversee the shaping of federal dietary guidelines, according to Vox. He was cited in popular media outlets such as O, the Oprah Magazine and the “Today” show and featured in newspapers such as the New York Times and The Washington Post. According to the blog the Skeptical Scientist, which is run by PhD student Tim van der Zee, the hundreds of papers Wansink published drew so much attention that they were cited some 20,000 times. But problems started to bubble up in 2016, after Wansink wrote a blog post about his research that drew wide criticism, according to BuzzFeed. Other researchers began investigating his studies and raised questions about his methodology. In 2017, Cornell undertook a review of four of his papers that found “numerous instances of inappropriate data handling and statistical analysis,” but said the errors “did not constitute scientific misconduct.” Our friend Nina Teicholz adds in her Op-Ed piece for the L.A. Times, Sloppy science bears substantial blame for Americans' bad eating habits: Wansink’s research depended on observational studies, which can yield only associations, such as “coffee is associated with cancer.” These are at best suggestions of hypotheses, and they nearly always fall far short of demonstrating cause and effect. To show causation — that coffee causes cancer, for example — a real experiment, or clinical trial, is needed. For nutrition policy, however, we have rarely required that caliber of research. Worse, the associational data in nutrition studies are particularly unreliable because the studies depend upon self-reported answers on dietary questionnaires with such queries as: How many cups of pasta did you consume weekly for the last six months? Or, how much did you enjoy that last slice of pizza? Studies have long shown that people misrepresent what they eat — or they simply can’t remember. Listen in today as we revisit the first two visits to the LLVLC Show to see if there are any clues from the past that might help us shed light on this kind of bad science in the future. In the very first episode of The Whole Health Life Podcast, we explore how our health is subtly and unknowingly influenced by the world around us. I'll be talking to Professor Brian Wansink, who's research has completely changed the way my family and I approach food. Brian Wansink is a Professor of Marketing and the Director of the Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University. He and his team are dedicated to studying why we eat what we eat and how triggers around us, such as people, packages, dinnerware, product names, labels, lights, smells, and distractions, can unconsciously influence what we put into our mouths.  The great thing about the tips and tricks that Professor Wansink shares in our conversation is that they are not only grounded in rigorous research, he's put them to the test in his own busy life so he knows they work. They're also simple and inexpensive, and can really make a difference.

Welcome to my Sound Bites podcast where we delve into the science, psychology and strategies behind good food and nutrition. Today my guest is Brian Wansink, PhD author of Slim by Design and Mindless Eating and Director of the Cornell University Food & Brand Lab.Did you know we make over 200 food decisions every day? We are ALL mindless eaters. Maybe you're familiar with Dr. Wansink's food lab experiments like the endless soup bowl, or the movie theatre popcorn, or the many other fun research studies he's done to examine why and how we all make food decisions. Willpower doesn't work! It's easier to change your environment than to change your mind! On this episode we discuss: 1. The way our homes, schools, restaurants, workplaces, and grocery stores are set up predictably lead us to pick up cookies rather than apples. But just as they’ve evolved to make us overeat, we can easily redesign them to make us slim. 2.    To slim down via willpower is hard. Slim by Design is easy! Use the resources available and make this a movement! 3.    For every place we purchase or prepare food – homes and schools, restaurants and grocery stores – there are slim by design solutions.Check out the show notes at www.SoundBitesRD.com/blog

Did you know that you make 25-30 food-related decisions by the end of breakfast each day? What?! It’s not just about the type of cereal you choose for breakfast, it’s how much you serve yourself, whether to add milk, how much milk, whether to finish the first bowl, if you go back for seconds, what you do with the extra milk and on…and on…and on…And that’s just in your kitchen! You do this all. day. long. Which, it turns out, is why we end up mindlessly overeating. We don’t realize we’re making hundreds of little micro decisions each day. I’m here to tell you the good news about all of this mindless eating. The same things that make you overeat can help you engineer your environment and your food choices so that you mindlessly eat less. Without going on some crazy diet. Without depriving yourself of the stuff you love. You can eat up to 20% less each day without even realizing it. You just need to implement a few simple, scientifically-proven tools (sounds like an infomercial, right?). Sound good? I thought so too! Which is why I’m super excited to share today’s episode with you. Dr. Brian Wansink is Director of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab and this is the type of stuff he studies each and every day. He’s written an awesome book that you should absolutely read called Slim by Design. It will literally rock your world. Dr. Wansink can look at your kitchen and predict how much you weigh with a surprising degree of accuracy. Why? Because it turns out that your kitchen and how you have it structured can either make you (and your family) slim by design or heavy by design. In this episode Dr. Wansink shares tools for tricking yourself into eating less, both in this busy holiday season and at home year round. I can’t wait to hear your favorite parts of this episode. And get the book. Seriously. It’s that useful.
